Since the 930 and 920 D0 are roughly the same price, what do you guys think is the best purchase?
I am *thinking* about upgrading to this from my 3.8ghz Q9550 system. Think I should go for it or wait until the less expensive 6 core chips come out later this year? I've been running this same mb/ram since the q6600 days and I've been delaying an upgrade for what seems like forever :)
I completely forgot about the new xeons that were recently released once I saw that all the hexa-cores were ~1000$ lol. Might get one of those quads if the price is reasonable.
Personally I would keep a 3.8Ghz Q9550 until about this time next year and upgrade to Sandy Bridge (or what ever else is out then).
A lot of that depends on what you use it for as a 9550 at 3800 is certainly fast enough for pretty much anything though I too recently built another system with a 920 and they are certainly faster plus you will be all set for a Gulftown chip when they arrive. :DI am a clocking freak so I have different systems which is nice but expensive. I still have a Q6600 and 9550 myself with my 920 system dedicated for bench life.
It will definitely be interesting to see how the gulftown xeon cpus do... Some say the xeon equivilent of the 920 was a beast.
Please pay attention to an increase in the amount of the cache memory.
If it is a clock similarly, Westmere-EP is surely fast.
I think 32 nm for the OC tolerance of 930 or more to exist.
Very high Vcore is necessary for 930.
WPrime1024m score is very impossible in gulftown.

930 are not very good i can't see some one stable at 4600 or more.
got to 4.45ghz tonight.. still with c1e and eist on..
only needed to up the vdroop profile and the cpu voltage to 1.375
ran 30 loops of linX and it was stable for that.. under full load it hit 65c usually idles about 29 but it's also not summertime :D
Swiftech XT block, 6 gb ddr3 ocz gold 88824, Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
i7 930 batch: 3001a124
I'm shooting for 4.6+, I think there is much room since this was a very crude overclock and I'm sure I'm overvolting things i don't need to. Plus with EIST and C1E on and still working great.. there must be some more wiggle room. I'll post back later.
Mine is stable at 4.5 GHz on air but it requires somewhere between 1.4-1.5V and gets way too hot.
so i'm getting pissed at my C0 920 only being stable at 3.8GHz 24/7 and I think I'm going to make the 500 mile round trip drive to Minnesota to pick up a 930 at micro center... should I? also will they just let me look at the batch # on the box and decide which one I want?
My micro center people let me do just that which is cool, I grabbed a gem that way recently.
Seems i7 950 is still best choice.. sad.. I tought about buying 930 too. :(
to much bla bla and no SS :sad
Decided to get the i7 930 for 200$ (microcenter), although I messed up on the TIM application so I can't do any OCing till I redo it.
hmmm... so... i have a i7 920 clocked to 3.8 @ 1.272v.
I was thinking on updating the 930 and a new mobo... the problem is that i'm really confused...
the i7 930's are not "that good" or is just my wrong idea of the processors? I saw users very enthusiastic with the 920 D0's and Xeon parts... but the 930's kind of... i don't know ... don't have the same "feeling".
Please, tell me your thoughts about your i7's 930.
embarking on my 8 hour round trip to micro center... going to pick up a 930 and some IC Diamond paste while I'm there. I'll let you guys know my results in a day or three.
well, i went with a 930 because i had a Q6600 before >_> im happy with it, but if you have a 920 right now, i'd spend the $200 towards the new GTX480 GPU or something like that. no sense in gaining a minimal increase. i only did it cuz it was the same price as the 920's at the time, and i was one of the first. (im OP here ^^)
Ok, just bought another 2 chips yesterday and I am testing the first one right now and it looks like I got lucky again!
The first one I am testing now is 3951A687 and so far I have got it 20 passes of linx stable at 4022mhz @ 1.23v with HT on, that is approaching golden status... It looks like a great batch, and more testing soon to come!
The second I bought and am going to be testing is a 3001A126, results soon to come!
Been testing like crazy, and I am very happy with this chip after reseating my cpu waterblock... this is the best I can do so far with it stable and my hottest core only getting to 67*C (my 5870 never gets over 32*C), but I have a pretty wild watercooling setup:
http://www.overclock.net/attachments...20x-linx-2.jpg
Hmmm I guess I should add a dedicated 3.120 just for my cpu and leave the 2.120 just for the gpu.
The IMC seems very strong for only -5c
VTT @ 1.45v
VDIMM @ 1.58v
CPU @ -5c
batch 3002A623
-5 degress and only 4059mhz :D bad cpu dude !!! rofl
ok well my 3001A126 isn't looking that great, or maybe I just unskilled haha.
4200mhz even at 1.375v still not stable. I really want to get to 4200mhz so we'll see how high i need to go. cores staying under 70C with water.
Is this good?
3.7ghz @ 1.15 vcore
Just picked up. A 930 batch 3001A125. Anyone have experience if this is a good batch? I read somewhere that the 3001A124 is a good oc batch but the 3001A126 was not a good oc'er. If it's not a good batch I'll go back and try to change it for a new batch. Thanks.
The 126's I have tested have been horrible.
I only tested on 125 and it was fairly decent... I got 4.2ghz out of it at i think around 1.3875v
So its probably OK to keep and OC then. The microcenter I got it from said they all got their 930s all in one batch, not sure if there is going to be any variation in the 125s. I have 14 days in order to return the processor so might hold out. However my new comp parts come in on Monday so might not be able to resist. hehe
If the 125s are decent then I'll be happy with if it can do 4.2 on air.
Does anyone have a 930 batch #3951A824? Just wondering if it is a good one. I just got one and on the stock cooler got 4GHz stable at 1.28. HT off. Can't want until next week to get the rest of my parts so I can get my water back in this thing. Anyways, if anyone has any tips on O.Cing i7s that would be great (this is my first intel CPU). Voltages would be nice. Thanks!
Yep unfortunately 'good' 930s are few and far between. They simply need more vCore for the clocks which translates into more heat...
But most of them seem good enough for the usual 4Ghz-4.2Ghz 24/7 clocks. Just need some good cooling
any one here tested or know any information for overclocking about this batch 3003A965
because i want to buy one and all in store have this batch
any help please.....
I got my i7 930 running @ 4209MHz with 1.34v

PS: please stop spamming this thread with 920 results ;)
4.1 @ 1.270. Seems like a nice OC and a low amount of voltage for this OC. Even with this low voltage my CPU loads around 70C on water!
3951A690
I can not get stability with mult 22x. 21x seems to be perfect, even with 22x more 1.325vQPI to 183, bclk not like LinX.
I'm on R2E @18xx BIOS, my 930 atch is 3001A624.

Anyone with a 3002A ?
Any idea on 3952A521 ??
I am getting a nice deal on them, he does not have any 920's only 930's !!
They are fine with the 22x multi until you start pushing the chip hard... Like past 4ghz with HT on.
Do you think the i7 930 is a better cpu to OC vs one Xeon w3520 ?
I have mine stable at 4.2GHz HT off. I will try to go higher sometime.
Report max bclks please
I have 3001A480 COSTA RICA
Run that under chilled H20 (near zero) and LN2 (-60...-70)
squeezed only 220MHz bclk or so :(

Then flashed my P6T Deluxe board with P6X58D Premium bios, enabled QPI Slow mode (x12 multi for uncore) and got 230mhz bclk
http://valid.canardpc.com/cache/screenshot/1123009.png
But that's unbenchable in 3D, perf is stupid with x12 uncore
How to get bclk past 220? :(
I got 4.4 stable last night at 1.45volts! woot.
im also stable 4.4@1.456v

THANK YOU FINALLY
as OP im really sick of ppl saying "my 920 is better than your 930." if this is you, go buy a 930, and put into it the same ammount of time you have put into your 920s. come back in a year and then sqwak at the guys with the i7 935s. or whatever is next. Fanboys piss me off. /flame off
Some results! Prime Stable!
1.5Vcore 1.74 Vdimm 1.625 Dram uncore voltage! For Cas6 timing!

sounds like a bit of a beast this one!
Got it down to 1.4 for 4.2! The reason i needed the high volts is the imc was backing out with the high clocked mem!

I've got one of the less common batch numbers.. 3951A824. I've had this setup for about a week now with zero problems. Appears to be prime95 stable. Max temperatures at load are 78C. Seems like a decent batch?
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/9018/captureym.jpg
EDIT: Where E-LEET says the CPU VTT is 1.5v, make that 1.375v. Seems to be working fine too
So what do you guys think? 920 d0 or 930? My C0 isn't very nice. Lots of vcore and temps in the low 80's. It actually wants more vcore, but it's stable enough for daily use and gaming.
From what I've seen so far the recent batches of both the 920 D0 and 930 D0 are performing about the same. It's all about the batch number really. I'm curious to see some W3530s
Here is my recent purchase of a W3520 and so far preliminary findings on STOCK intel cooler. Waiting for my 2nd 480 HC FTW card so I can install and setup both water loops.

I use 1.41V @ 4.41Ghz 24/7 stable. I hope that helps.
Although 4 hours is good, I would run 8 to 16 hours. I have crashed many times over 19 hours. Ran 100 Passes at LINX the other day/ I woke up and it was at 90 passes. I was like I have it in the bag. Turned my head and boink! Crash. That was at 4.52Ghz too. Also you do NOT need the frequency on Ram so high. The performance from 1600 to 2000MHz is like .05%. Lower frequencies will give you more headroom to overclock.... GL/
Update: HT Off

( HT On is very hot )
4200MHz (200x21)

Hey guys, mine OverClock is SAFE to 24/7 ?
Now, 4.45GHz with HT OFF, 1.35vQPI / 1.8vPLL/ 1.179v vIOH / 1.40vCore ( On BIOS, LinX = 1.45v / GTA IV = 1.41v on multimeter).
Hi!
Anyone here have these batch 3951A694? Is it good one? I have a chance to buy it quite cheap...
Anybody pushed 930 to >220 bclk stable?
3002A574 here.
Pack date 3/9/10.
Still waiting on parts for new build, Plus newbie on OCing.
Will follow this thread.
Later:)
4.4 for me at 1.35, I will get the batch tomorrow when i find the box!
