Thank you to Charles, Martin etc. to point me to this beautiful worklog. Callen: Outstanding :)
Gezz...Nice tools....great skill's. Amazing mod man.
This is too much.. ;)
I may have to start selling body parts to science just to fund my stupid project! (note to self; computers are cheap, modding is expensive)
Oh and "Praise Science" is actually a quote from South Park :p:
Sorry about the delayed response whuzabi, i missed the last part of your post :(. The bending of the rad bracket was done at a local metal retail/fabrication shop. They use a bending break, albeit a very expensive one, but you can get a simple one off of ebay relatively cheap. If you want more info i'd suggest asking CptDreadFlint or Xion X2 as i know they both have one. Hope that helps :)
Thank a lot, nils :). I'm really happy you had a chance look through :yepp:
lol, thank's mate :) It's really appreciated
I'm really glad you liked it enough to refer it to other people, Martin. Thank you very much for the kind words :D
WOW! i'm completely speechless!! :shocked::eek2::worship:
thx 4 the information :) maybe for the next big case i will do this :)
whats about updates ? maybe some blingbling lightning for the plexi ?!
You know I've gone though like a box of tissues just drooling over this? I just bought the same drill press, is yours a little noisy on top where you can adjust the belts? mine was, i got some u-channel edge molding and put it around the top edge, if its noisy i suggest you do the same :D
PS I'm going to buy a router and a table, I've seen too many good builds with these tools, it just becomes too much pressure eventually!
TBH I think my Jaw is Broken. Amazing Work And Skills You have Dude !!! Keep it Up Cant wait for more.
I'd like to say i have updates coming but i've been worked to the bone lately and haven't even had a second to do anything :(. Don't worry though, i should have some bling for you soon :)
Thanks for the funny complement :p: and thanks for the advice about the drill press . I actually fixed mine by just tightening the belts with the chrome handles at the back of the press, i still get some vibration though, how's yours?
I'd definitely recommend a router table too, just make sure you spend a bit of money (i know, it's hard sometimes :p:) and get a decent one straight up, nice and big, or you'll probably end up having to buy another one. I've said it before, but these tables are the next best thing to a cnc. i love mine :)
:p: Hope you get well soon. Thanks for the complement mate :)
After seeing CptDreadFlint mention your name several times, I just went this entire build log. You work is fantastic and your level of detail is exceptional. You are so true that computers are cheap- modding is expensive! I'm going to keep watching this one from here forward.
Rick is a really cool guy, i've become pretty good friends with him in the last few months (his wife's also from Aus so he gets extra brownie points). He also produces very high quality work and his photo's are stunning, so it's awesome to know he's mentioned my project.
I've also seen your work and it's simply amazing! Maybe i'll try working with wood too one day, it looks like a hell of a lot of fun :yepp:
I'm really glad to hear you'll be following my thread, i'll take all the help i can get from people with your experience and skill  and i'll be sure to follow you new project too; it looks crazy difficult so i can't wait to see how you pull it off! I'm definitely going to come across some new tip and tricks, that's for sure.
Thanks, mate :)
I found the same router and table you have, at maxis tools over on Magill road Stepney (I'm down near Hallet cove) and it think it was about 800 for the table/precision measurement add-on, is that where you bought yours?
PS I know how you feel about your dad stealing your new bench, mines always cluttered up with car parts and covered in grease, i put a plastic bag over my drill press when I'm not using it now :p:
Truly impressive.
That price sounds about right. I imported mine from the states because i couldn't find any here and it worked out about the same after postage. I bought the precision measurement and a few other add-ons after though, so it ended up costing me a bit more.
Overall i'm super happy with it, definitely glad i spent the extra $$. The fence is always parallel to the mitre slot and it's super easy to move back and forth which saves tones of time.
On another note, parents suck :D. I'm already planning another huge bench and shelves though, the good thing is it's at their cost (yaaay) hehe.
Anyway, good luck with it all mate
Thanks bud, it's really appreciated :yepp:
:poke: update ? :stick:
 :(
ok than i have to make some. :) but no new parts jet :(
Been lurking around for 6 months now, and I have been wondering who should I give my first time to.. er my first post I mean...
It had to go to your exceptional skills and detailed Worklog without a doubt!!! Keep the updates coming!!!
Ok, so i rounded up some pics for an update, and by some i mean A LOT. I probably should have broken it up into
several posts but it's late and I couldn't really be bothered :p:. So lets get started shall we -
I needed a way to power the LEDs in the slots at the front while still being able to move the slots around if i needed. To do
this i decided to use a plug and socket, as you'll see below, which will pass straight through from the back side of the lower
drive-bay region and into each slot. This will allow me to easily slide each slot into position with all the LEDs installed and
simply plug in power after.
The following pics are really just a proof of concept and the final result will be pretty different;
I started with some mono 3.5mm audio jacks -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0430.jpg
Then I roughly cut a square of 10mm acrylic and bored an 8mm hole (same diameter as the shaft of the socket)-
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0432.jpg
Drilled a hole down -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0433.jpg
I then re-bored the edge of the first hole with a 9mm bit to allow for the full profile of the socket to sink into the acrylic -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0435.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0441.jpg
The rest is pretty self explanatory so i'll shut my trap and just put up the pics -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0443.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0444.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0446.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0448.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0452.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0455.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0456.jpg
Forgot to take pics but this is what i'm left with :p: -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0459.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0458.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0460.jpg
Made a bit of a mess but its a test, so who cares :) -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0462.jpg
I forgot to countersink the acrylic for the last part of the socket so it isn't quite flush -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0464.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0465.jpg
Other end -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0466.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0468.jpg
The positive cable in the picture above (and below) is actually installed in the wrong hole in the fan socket and it didn't work
the first time i connected it to the fan controller. I corrected this but haven't taken pics yet, and i can now dim the LEDs with
the fan controller (yay :p:) -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0469.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0470.jpg
Because the fan controller didn't work i did something i wouldn't really advise lol (notice the wires jammed into the molex plug
up the top :shakes:) but hey, it works -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0473.jpg
Off -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0476.jpg
On -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0477.jpg
I forgot to mention that the middle row of LEDs are UV, but it was too bright to light up the coolant below (and the pics are
blue because the halogen lights above are turned off).
I did a test fit with the mobo and one of the GPUs to get an idea of how much room i'd be working with and where i would put
the last 2 holes in the res (don't mind the chunk of wood holding up the res) -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0487.jpg
now I could start work on the res -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0493.jpg
Drilled and tapped -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0502.jpg
Same with the side piece -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0505.jpg
The pieces in the middle are chambers to reduce the turbulence when filling and to stop bubbles being drawn into the
pumps.... hopefully.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0506.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0510.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0552.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0576.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0577.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0578.jpg
Still not gluing on the top for now -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0572.jpg
And that's it for the res for the time being.
So, next. I needed to make way for tubing from the res -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0554.jpg
I needed to cut off more than i thought -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0560.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0562.jpg
There's a piece that sits behind it that also needs cutting -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0564.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0566.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0567.jpg
Got parts back from the water jet guys -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0616.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0617.jpg
Brushed the faceplate.... again  -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0639.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0641.jpg
Now that i had the copper cut i could also start on the RAM block -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0646.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0648.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0651.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0653.jpg
I set-up the stopper arms on the fence to reduce grabbing at the end of the cut -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0655.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0657.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0660.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0668.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0669.jpg
After driling -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0673.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0674.jpg
And counter sinking -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0680.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0682.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0683.jpg
I've still got to polish and nickel plate yet but it's not too bad for a hand job (don't laugh :p:)
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0727.jpg
Moving on then. I started work on the door -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0765.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0767.jpg
The acrylic rests on the door hinge bracket so it needed to be modified -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0768.jpg
All marked to cut -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0769.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0772.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0774.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0775.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0778.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0779.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0780.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0781.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0785.jpg
And after all that its covered up haha -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0787.jpg
Next I cut out some acrylic for the PSU Bracket -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0790.jpg
The rest should explain itself -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0793.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_0795.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1069.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1070.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1071.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1072.jpg
After routing to size i hit the corners with the file -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1076.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1077.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1078.jpg
A bit bright but here's the set -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1081.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1083.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1085.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1086.jpg
The blue acrylic in the last piece wasn't big enough to fill the hole so it had to be made of 2 pieces -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1087.jpg
And, finaly lol, here's what i'm up to (btw the acrylic in the following pics will go under the panels, just thought i should
mention that to avoid confusion) -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1089.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1091.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1092.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1100.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1101.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1106.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1102.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1103.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1105.jpg
These parts aren't finished yet but the results so far look promising.
Sorry, not quite finished yet, i forgot i had pics of the gluing process.
As far as i'm concerned, Weld-On #3 and #4 is too thin and #16 (in the tube) is too thick for the work i was doing. I wanted
something like #16 that could fill gaps but i needed something thinner like #3 to cover a large area with a thin layer. So,
here's my brilliant plan (probably been used for ages though :p:), just mix them.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1108.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1111.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1115.jpg
There's Weld-On #3 in there too.
Next, Glob it on. Actually, i should explain that the glue was placed between the 2 pieces of acrylic. The glue you see
on top is just the excess which was squeezed out of the edges -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1116.jpg
And squish it down -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1117.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1119.jpg
That's all of them :)
And i'm spent :)
If you managed to get through half of that post, i send you a big thanks. If you managed to look through all of it, i take my
hat off to you. And if you looked at every pic and read every word...... well, you've just got too much time on your hands, go
get a job ya bum haha :D.
Thanks for checking in everyone, It's really appreciated :).
Cya guys,
Callen.
that's quite the update Callen,
Amazing work as always. Your talent is unparalleled, keep up the amazing and innovative work!
wow, really stunning as usual  awesome idea about the blue acrylic inside and great handmade RAM block!
I need a cigarette after that update!
Wicked man, just wicked! :yepp:
Keep up the brilliant work my friend!
Holy *#^@
http://snarkmarket.com/blog/snarkives/epic.jpg
I don't say this a lot, but that is some INSPIRING work, Callen. The acrylic behind the waterjet cut panels is just beautiful. And fabbing your own RAM blocks, wow! Great work on the res, also.
Incredible work.
Here I am yet again wishing I had a router so I could have me some fun like that...
Damn amazing work! I cant wait to see it finished.. Subbed!
Well done mate, excellent work.
I too really like the blue acrylic as well, looks sweet.
Did I miss something while being a bum  and reading, well at least looking at your update?
Are there any holes for the fittings in that ram blook?
Excellent work Champ!!
hi callen. just can say awesome. the plexi looks realy nice the idea great. cant just say anything.
i realy like to see and read what u got done. impressiv build go for it man wih i got those toys :)
Daaaeemmmmnnnn ... gonna take me more than one read to absorb this one. Holy Moly Schmoly - you got the skills.
WOW...
and i'm not talkin' about the game! ;)
What I love is that when callen's away he says things like "haven't had time to do hardly anything.." and then he comes back with the instruction manual for epic modding a few days after.
:ROTF:
Just awesome stuff.
Yepp read every word and looked at every pic too. What an update. Awesome work mate.
Love the clear and blue acrylic behind the faceplate and PSU bracket, your reservoir and the RAM block too.
Look forward to seeing more stunning work :yepp:
that´s not normal!!! AMAZING :)
Such incredible work, Callen! Love the Callen Ram Block, the hand job Res is a total happy ending, and the acrylic work is rock star - blue came out gorgeous! It's truly awesome to see the ideas you've had all coming to fruition.
I'm completely blown away at the sheer magnitude of awesomeness being displayed!
And I thank you for my fix. :D
wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg! wow! omg!
Yours truly epic mod
Holy crap.
Firstly... OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Secondly... Read everything and scrutinized every image x 03 Times (Yea I'm a bum with nothing else better to do, so why not spend time on appreciating some art :) )
Love the the RAM block... oh the RAM block, the blue acrylic behind the faceplate and PSU bracket, your reservoir... EVERYTHING!!!
MORE!!! MORE!!! MORE UPDATES!!! I do not want to go through cold turkey again!!!
Indeed Callen, it`s awesome... Nothing more, nothing less!! It`s gonna be a real great, outstainding mod!
Its all been said allready but damn duder - fine skills
Amazing mate, you take a picture of EVERYTHING you do, step by step, detail by detail. Your work is genius, all I can say is that the router is probably the best purchase you've made IMO ;)
.
think, think *write something articulate that expresses your amazement and hides you are stupefied* ^^^ that's all I came up with :D
I'm like all the others, nobody says anything negative about your build, because there is nothing negative about it! :)
the one thing I would have mentioned is already said by kgtiger, why there are no threads in the ram-cooler?? :D
as a last, I can only say that I'm overwhelmed by your amazing update, there where a few things I could not understand completely :D e.g. I don't understand which part you cutted away at the front door to make the acrylic fit, but at the end it's still a complete door :D So I'm really looking forward to see the finished build so that I can understand all the small or bigger things you did and how they fit together :D
To defend myself I have to say that it's easter's friday today, so I have got the time to read all your words and look at all your pictures without spending too much time :D
Greetz, chuky :)
You don't mess around, do you? I mean when you post an update, you really post an update. I haven't quite put all of the pieces together yet in my mind as to where they are all going, but you are doing an awesome job.
Thanks mate, there were a few more pics than i planned :p:, there's also so many talented people on this forum, it makes learning a hell of a lot easier, although i'm no where near as talented as them!
Cheers, aka_GK. I just hope the lighting for the acrylic works as planned
lol thanks, Charles. I'll try my best to keep it up (the brilliant work that is )
Really appreciated, Xion . It took me a minute to work out that image too, kinda tripped me out lol :p:.
Cheers, dude :). Good luck with the workshop too, it'll help any future projects A LOT!
i didn't even realise i'd left them out! easy enough to fix :). Thanks for the complement mate, it's appreciated
Thanks, whuzabi! you better save those pennies and buy some toys for yourself too :p:
haha, can't say i didn't warn you :). Thank ya Shazza
Cheers, bud. That's a good one :p:
hehe what i should have said was i haven't had any time to finish anything :D.
I just haven't felt like there was anything worth posting. So i wait until i do something i'm happy with and just add all the rest into the same update. This was a bit ridiculous though, i could have made the post with a fraction of the pictures but, hey, someone might learn something new  (that's my excuse from now on :p:).
Good to hear mate, i really appreciate you taking the time to go through it :yepp:
haha I know, right? A normal person would have posted maybe 10 pics. Thanks to rick's incredible mathematics skills (:p:), i've been informed that i posted over 100!!
Although it wouldn't really be a work log if i didn't show any work lol but i think i'll tone it down a little, errr.... make that a lot :)
Thanks, Rick'o. Your always way to nice for a pirate :p: but i'm not complaining :yepp:. I also had to make sure you got a big fix this time, because the next one may be a while away
haha epic comment :)
Thank you, Oli4v :). I think it's funny calling it a mod, but i did start with a chassis, even if there is only about 5% left :p:. Sometimes i wish i just started from scratch though :(
...Thank...you?..:confused::D
Cheers, Obsidian Rift!
I'm really glad you appreciate some of the work i've done :yepp:. I think i'll re-do the ram block though, just the acrylic that is, as it's pretty simple atm. I can't do anything really crazy because it's done by hand but i reckon i could whip up something nicer... hopefully :p:
That's not fair, i want it to be more than awesome (why isn't there any smilies for crying :(). Just kidding of course :). Thanks for the kind words mate
Thans a lot, colossous . I do try my best :D
And IMO too :). I wouldn't have been able to do 99% of the things i've pulled off this far without it! Actually i could have but it would have been quite expensive. CNC routing costs a lot more than laser and water jet :yepp:
Thanks for the complement mate
Thanks, Mrs F. :). I completely missed the small text at the end of the comment!! I thought you had just posted a full stop hahaha boy do i feel stupid. So i guess if your stupified, and i'm just plain stupid then we're gonna get along GREAT :D
Your not gonna make me post up more pics with more steps are you :p:. It'd drive people crazy lol.
i actually completely forgot to drill and tap holes in the ram block but i think i'll be changing it anyway, so no big deal. And as far as the door mod goes, i'll have a crack at explaining;
There are 2 brackets on the inside of the door, 1 on each vertical edge. 1 bracket holds the door hinges and the other holds a closing mechanism so the door will stay shut when closed.
I had to cut chunks out of one of the brackets so the acrylic would completely cover the holes i had water jet cut in the front.
To cut it i just marked it and unscrewed the bracket from the door (its the long black strip in one of the pics). After it was cut and shaped i screwed it back to the door again which is why it was complete at the end.
I hope that helps a bit??? I do suck at explanations though :(.
Thank you very much for reading through, mate :).
Cheers, voigts :D. I hope to throw it all together soon so don't think too hard lol. I say soon but we've all said that before :p: Thanks for taking a look man
Thanks, everyone. Hope you all have a totally awesome, fully sick, incredibly super duper Easter weekend :D,
Callen .
PS that took a while :p:
be sure, you're explainations helped me in understanding ;) when you say that you only post pics 'cause they describe themselves, it's very often true, but from time to time, I don't understand it, so when this is the case, be sure that I'm gonna ask :p:
Note for you: Post your updates as you did, change nothing ;) despite....you said that you post an update when you think there's something worth. What was the one special update worth to post in the last great update? maybe you'll give us the next steps part to part, because EVERY part of your update was worth shown on his own :p:
One question remains: What colour shall your water have and will your amazing res be visible from the top of the case?
Cya :)
it's nice that you're giving this case such a good look, something that not very much people did before, so it is very original
You can say
- Raw=original case
- Design and detail = Callen_01
I read the whole thread any i can only say awesome. You got some mad skils.
Cheers, Chucky :). I'm glad the explanation helped a little. As far as the "special udate" goes i was most happy with the acrylic towards the end of the post so i thought it was worth posting.
The res also will be visible from the top and the coolant is going to be blue. I think there are better pics of the rad mounting on the first page if that helps.
Thanks agian, mate
Well, at least nobody can say it isn't different, that i'm sure of :p:
Thaks, Oli4v :).
Awesome! It's great to hear when people burn through the whole thread :), thanks for taking the time, mate
callen, don't change your update style. I personally enjoy it. We each have our own style. I prefer to keep mine a bit shorter because of how long it takes to upload/link pictures as well as provide commentary, but it's nice to have someone such as yourself whose update takes about 30-45 minutes to fully ingest. It's like sitting down with a nice sitcom or short film.
You really are helping set the bar high for fabrication. I think that I'm doing ok, and then I see how easy you make everything look. It takes me 2-3 times as long to do some of this stuff.
The design of your build is starting to come together, and I really think that it's going to look fantastic when finished. It looks as if your entire ceiling will be the reservoir, and that can really bring the inside to life since the coolant will be constantly bubbling. That was a sweet idea and will help put a signature on your build that will last in reader's minds for quite a while since it's a unique effect.
Just stay focused and keep doing what you're doing. One step at a time and then onto great things.
Hey thanks, man. I really do appreciate it :).
btw, some of the pics might suggest the work didn't take that long but holy s#@t does it take a while to rout some of that stuff!!! I stress the whole time too, because it only takes the smallest mistake and there goes 5 or 6 hours work down the drain . It's even worse when your working on original case parts cos you can't just whip them up again. I think i lost hair when i was cutting the holes in the top and front of the case lol :p:. I used to look like this :bravo:, now i'm just this guy; :shakes:
Yeah. I can totally identify with the stress when working on the frame.
There are times, when you're working with materials you have plenty of, that are lots of fun because you know you can just whip another one out. But when it comes to the case frame I'm always stressing and thinking to myself.. alright, don't *#& this up. Nice and slooooowwww.
But then, when you've successfully modified the frame in the way you wanted, nothing is more rewarding. At least for me. :D
One thing that I've realized lately is how much "correcting" or "refining" can truly be done with files and sanding. Getting a lot of good practice in with that lately. Especially the acrylic/lexan work.
The craftsmanship on this build is just sick! Very very nice:clap:
Looking forward to more stunning pics!
Lawl, Xion, Callen, seeing you two discuss modding is like watching two yogi's discussing Life, the Universe and Everything else :p:.
Alright, that's it.... After watching callen and xion perform miracles with routing tables, I am compelled to invest in some quality tools and materials.
This is an amazing thread, and I again have no idea how I missed something like this!
I'm still drooling over the SSD gems/powercores/containment fields and the spacers in what used to be the 5.25" bays!
Spectacular...
This is what I'd call a "sleeper." Started off kinda slow - very unassuming. Then, wham - we get to see the skill and truly amazing creativity Callen is bringing to this mod. By the way, I just counted 65 posts in this thread with the word AMAZING in them (make that 66 now).
its amazing zenzizenzizenzic :) (look it up :P )
I think i need to add another Amazing to the thread :), Absolutely Amazing work :).
*decides to break the pattern* It's Awesome!
*goes to register www.billiondollar-pc.com in preparation*
*tells god he has some serious competition*
I've already spent too much money on tools this year. Now you guys are making me want to go get a real router table. My table is just too basic to do much more than route edges with.
Ah...
I was away for a short while and I come back to a 1gb update. Custom res. Custom lit front door. LEDs. OMG custom ram block. Flush-fit blue acrylic inset in clear acrylic.
You have such keen attention to detail...it's really totally beyond me and my ability to describe it. And the structure of this worklog creates an odd kind of dissonance with the project itself. Your updates read like "ok so I figured out how to do this part so here's what I've been working on hope you like it" but the reality is you must have planned out every single piece way beforehand, either in CAD or in your brain.
Part of me thinks: It would be interesting if callen started with a render of the entire thing and then we as readers can follow along and go "oooh so that's how he does that, aaah so that's what that is."
Another part of me thinks: Why ruin the surprise? ;)
Sorry for rambling, just trying to get my thoughts together on this fantastic project. Please don't let that take away from the quality of work going on here. It deserves every accolade + superlative said so far, and still more on top. Mind-blowing in the most literal sense. My skull actually exploded, I'll be cleaning brain matter off my desk after this post.
PS Before I read it, I knew it would be a good update when I had to go back 2~3 pages of comments to find the actual update. :D
I agree 110%. The feeling of relief is pretty crazy, but the stress gets worse and worse the more you complete, because if u f@#k up there's so much more work u need to re-do!
Your also right about the files, but to be honest (when it comes out right) i definitely prefer the look of a clean routed edge. It only really counts if the part will be seen anyway.
Cheers, bud  It's always nice to get positive feedback :yepp:. Just be sure to give me negative feedback too if i need it.
Haha, we're just amateurs to the likes of people like Charles_H, CptDreadFlint, Shazza, 99% of the other people on extreme, 99% of the Germans and 100% of the crazy skilled people that have a PC on MDPC.com!! (sorry if i missed anyone lol :p:)
"SSD gems/powercores/containment fields" haha i liked that one! I wish you had been lurking around the thread sooner :D
Only 65? I better lift my game :p:. It's always hard to tell what a project's gonna be like after the first post, especially if that person's basically never posted anything before. I wish i knew how to do that rendering stuff but it's just beyond me (i could try google but i'm lazy). This project has changed about 10^8 times (or zenzizenzizenzic as individual would say) since i started so it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. Gotta love wing'n it.
That's a new one, never heard anything like it before! Thanks for the complement, mate
The more the merrier :), Thanks, bud!
lol Cheers, man :D
I thought it was a real link so i clicked it haha. i must have sniffed too much mineral turps, i'm getting dumber by the day :p:
I did sell my soul to the devil so he better look out :D
If there is any bit of seriousness in this post it's this - Get a decent router table, you will not regret it. Like right now! GO!!!!
You make incredible stuff anyway, i'd really love to see what u could do :yepp:
The fact you went to the trouble of writing out you thoughts is a huge complement, Kibbs!! So thank you very much :).
Now, as far as planning goes, it's a mixed bag. I originally had a PC-A10 case from my last build and spent many, many, many... hours measuring and re-designing the internals of the case to give it a cleaner look (for example; i didn't want to have any holes in the mid plate that i wouldn't use). That was originally going to be all the work i would do on the chassis until i decided i didn't want to simply run the tubing through a hole in the aluminum.
This is is when i started thinking about using a small piece of acrylic to tap bits into for the pass-through (thanks for idea #2 Charles. Idea #1 was the face plate). It was also around this point i had the idea about a large res at the top of the case. Another guy (sorry, i can't remember the name) posted the same idea just before i was about to post, so there goes my originality :p:.
The small acrylic would have looked s#!t so i decided i might as well cover the entire mid-plate. When i was designing the CAD for the acrylic, somewhere along the line i decided to add covers for everything.
Most of the ideas i've had are just extensions of other peoples work. But then again it doesn't matter what you do, someone's bound to have done it before! A lot of the ideas i come up with are usually at work where i have tonnes of time to do nothing but think.
This is where i thought about the weird acrylic slots at the front, the cuts and lighting in the door, the blue acrylic, and where i worked out most of the other small hitches i was having trouble with. There are just too many distractions at home. If i did manage to sit down and try to brain storm some ideas i'd just end up rummaging through the fridge within 5 minutes.
Anyway that's basically a rundown of the project up until now. So i guess it's my turn to apologize for rambling :p:. Maybe one day you could teach me to use sketchup?? but for now it's all stored in the old noggin.
Damn, well i hope you enjoy your new pc :(
I did a bit of work over the last couple of days so it's update time. Don't worry though, you won't have to purchase
any more data blocks after viewing this one!
I was gonna use vandal buttons for power and reset but i've decided to try and make my own. In this update i've only
done the holes for the case, so nothing special. It was however the hardest part.
Here's the plan -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1135.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1134.jpg
To get the best results as well as repeatable result, i made up a little jig -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1139.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1142.jpg
After routing to size -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1143.jpg
I decided to rout a lip into the jig which will let me rest it on the edge of the case. This helps hold the jig stable and it
also means both hole cut will be on the exact same level -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1144.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1147.jpg
Look mum (mom), no hands! -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1149.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1150.jpg
First a quick cut with the dremel -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1152.jpg
Add a touch of tape to the jig and hit it with the laminate trimmer -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1154.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1155.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1156.jpg
Next problem -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1157.jpg
i had to mark the black bracket while it was screwed to the case otherwise it would be impossible to get the holes in
the case to align perfectly with the holes in the bracket. There was a problem with this though. It would mean the
marks are on the wrong side and the bracket, and it would have to sit upright so i could see the marks when routing.
This was fixed by taping it to a piece of wood -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1160.jpg
I then cut with the dremel -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1162.jpg
And then routed out the wood below the holes (sorry the bracket is the wrong way around) -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1163.jpg
And after routing -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1171.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1169.jpg
I'm real happy with the results. I though i might have to hit it with a file afterwards but you cant even feel the seam
between the case and the bracket.
So that's the first thing i got out of the way on the weekend. The second thing i wanted to complete was the cable
routing for the GPU power. There was really only 1 way i could run them, and that was through the mid-plate, but i
wanted to keep it as neat as possible. This idea comes from someone else on the forum, i just can't remember who
(they had a tj-07 i believe, but then again who doesn't these days :p:)? If it's you then please yell out, i gotta give
credit where credit is due :yepp:.
This is my dodgy plan -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1173.jpg
Drew out the boundaries -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1178.jpg
Next i jumped on CAD and printed out the plan to size. Then cut and taped it to the mid-plate -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1180.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1183.jpg
Using the smallest drill bit that would fit in the chuck, i made guide holes for the bigger bits -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1184.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1185.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1187.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1188.jpg
Now i could use the bigger bits and feel safer about drilling without drifting -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1189.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1192.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1193.jpg
When i measured the thickness of the cable with the sleeve on, i forgot that the heatshrink was actually the thickest
part. I was lucky i left enough room between the holes because i ended up needing to use a 4.5mm bit instead of the
3.5 i had planned for. So, more drilling -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1204.jpg
And now it fits, hurrah-
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1207.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1209.jpg
So that's all well and good, but i still had another hole to cut in the original mid-plate -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1214.jpg
After Screwing the acrylic back to the mid-plate i used a nail to mark the corners -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1198.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1199.jpg
It's a bit hard to see so i marked them for ya -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1200.jpg
I was just about to make another jig when i realised why the dimensions i had drawn up for the boundaries of the
holes sounded so familiar. Out of coincidence, the jig i made for the buttons was exactly 1mm bigger in both directions
than the boundaries i had drawn for the cable holes. It saved me about an hour, i just had to break off the lip (i swear
my luck's running on empty!) -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1202.jpg
Hit it with the dremel -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1214.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1215.jpg
This is a tribute to any Aussies on the forum (and anyone else with a union jack in their flag :p:)-
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1217.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1218.jpg
Time for the trimmer again -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1219.jpg
Hard to tell but it's all cut out -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1220.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1221.jpg
Again, i'm really happy with the cut -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1224.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1226.jpg
And lastly, I cleaned up that dirty rusty cover -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1228.jpg
F#*k, sorry guys but there were more pics than i thought..... again .
Cheers for looking through :D
Callen
Awesome work
Very nice yet subtile mod! I wish LianLi would make em like this - still got a bunch of A10 cases left in stock, wanna mod them :ROTF: :D
Seriously Callen...I can't get this stupid smile off my face after seeing the level of execution you bring to the poker table.
Love love love (yes. that's THREE Loves :eleph: :eleph: :eleph:) what you did to create the holes for your power/reset switches. Reminds me a little of CyberDruid's Side Window Cut out tutorial but like...oompla loopaed. lolz
Enjoyed the pic explanation on how to eliminate "drilling drift", which takes more skill than Tokyo drift. heh.
I lack the online vocab to thoroughly express how much I enjoy your gift, me hearty! Seriously. The level in which you execute your fabrication ideas is just friggin' amazing. (chalk up another amazing from me.)
My turn to stir:
How did you get all this done and still have time to have Easter dinner with the fam? Spill publically here. Now. :D
Your manner of 'hitting' and 'jumping on' things is quite unlike any other I have seen.
Just brilliant.
Great job on that PCI-e mod. You'll just have to make sure that you stick with cards with two six-pins and not an eight-pin like the new 480 or 5970 has. ;) :D
I do have a question. Was it intentional for this piece right here not to line up on that right edge? (I'm sure it probably is and you just forgot to explain it.)
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S7...0/IMG_1169.jpg
Great job again !
Another good update, Callen. ( It might have been SNiiPE_DoGG's work log where you saw the drilling for the PSU wires)
@ Xion - I imagine the offset on the bracket is due to how the door fits onto the front of the case.
Top job AGAIN Callen...
P.S. Love the Union Jack! ;)
I always love your comments, they're complementary yet extremely entertaining at the same time.
As far as family dinner goes, well the olds pissed off on holidays and left me to look after their place. So my easter family dinner was a subway by myself, and a dozen of my dads beers with my mates :p:
Thanks, karbonkid. I find swinging my dremel by the cord is the easiest way to get the best results. I dunno how it works, maybe i'm just lucky??
Cheers, Xion. I have no intention of getting new cards any time soon but, if the time ever did arise, it'd be a relatively easy fix.
As for the piece in the pic, it's actually an original case part and that's how it's meant to be. It's to allow the door to swing open.
Thanks, bud. Its really appreciated
Thanks, Shazza :), but it wasn't from one of Sniipe's logs, although i don't doubt for a second he hadn't done it before. It was a more recent log and the guy had passthrough fittings on his mobo tray.
Your also spot on about the offset, here, have a banana sticker :)
Cheers, bro. Glad you liked it
Hmm...
If I may, this is the first time where I'm not 100% behind your work. Rather, 99% behind you and 1% hesitation. ;)
I imagine a case like this one should last through a few hardware cycles (more to the point I like to design for contingency), so what about GPUs that need 8pin connectors?
So my 2c...
My idea would be to drill out 8x4 holes (add 4 holes to each "end" of what you've just drilled) in the acrylic. Drill and tap 2 holes at the front and back of the wire pass-thru holes. Then cut out a larger...um, cutout, in the upper midplate (need to widen the cutout in the original midplate as well, but not as much, just enough to clear the holes). Make 3 more plates with 6x4, 8x4, 6x2+8x2 pass-thru holes respectively, drill and countersink 2 holes in each plate to match the 2 tapped holes in the acrylic. There you go, interchangeable plates for GPUs with different power requirements. Something like that.
EDIT:
Just saw that Xion mentioned a similar thing, I'm late to the party.
I think you're thinking of NaMcO's recent project named...The Project (iirc).
I completely understand where you guys are coming from about the need for the extra holes to future proof the case (and here come the buts) but i'm only going to worry about that when the time comes.
The plate which covers the acrylic may look simple but it actually contains hours and hours of work to get it just how i want it. To make more of those would also mean i'd have to re-do the acrylic too, as i wouldn't be able to line up the screw holes perfectly again without messing up the thread.
I know, i know i'm making excuses :p: but had i changed it to accommodate for later, the final result would still look exactly as it does now, only with hidden holes.
On top of all that, i'll probably build a new system when i need to upgrade anyway haha (why do i waste my money like this , because its fun says the devil on my shoulder :p:)
EDIT: Yeah it was NaMcO's build, thanks man, and thanks NaMcO
@ callen - gotcha. I wasn't sure there was a door on the front of the case. Makes perfect sense, then.
damn, you did that again  such a precise cuts
IMHO, this build truly represents the next level in craftsmanship, integration and execution.
Frankly, I have no idea how its going to turn out but that's part of the enjoyment. There's something to be said about not initially showing final concept renders and instead allowing us to take this remarkable journey - revealing as you go. I believe you know what you're doing as that's abundantly evident in your work. I'm fully confident that from what I've seen so far, it will surely be a masterpiece.
This really is an awesomely inspiring project. Thanks for sharing your work Callen; lead on my friend. :)
p.s.
/high-five!
Great update. :) Such precise work and meticulous execution. :D
Already looking forward to your next update.
Excellent work mate!
I really liked NaMcO's idea about having the GPU cables go through the mid plate like he did.
It looked excellent in his case and if by chance your planing to light it up with blue LEDs from underneath the mid plate, then it's gone to look Fantastic. :yepp:
Well done Champ.
Sorry for the late reply, guys. I didn't wanna bump the thread until i had an update ready, and i finally have something. But first i'd like to thank some people, it's well overdue :(
That's cool, man. I wouldn't be at all surprised if people forgot which case i even started with, the project's been going on for that long and there's not a whole lot of the original case left :(.
Thanks, aka_GK :). I hope you like it ;)
Thanks for the incredible complement, Charles. I've told you before and i'll say it again and again and again.. your work is some of the MOST (if not the most) inspiring artwork i've ever seen and the reason i started this project (and hopefully many more :D)!
I know it seems like i'm probably keeping people in the dark when it comes to the overall design, but it's not intentional. The project, as it stands, is completely different to what i had first imagined. I wish i had a plan to follow sometimes, i probably would have been finished by now if that were the case. But overall i'm happy with the results, and every day at work i come up with new ideas to add to the case :). Sometime in the near future i will learn to render though, i think it looks awesomely fun, not to mention useful :D
Thanks again, mate. High-five (Hai-ya! /high-five noise)
Thank you too, Colossous :D.
Cheers, Red-5. I'm happy with the result but by god it's time consuming :(
Thanks, Graham :). NaMcO's idea was great! Unfortunately once the GPUs are in place the holes wont be seen at all, so no LEDs for me :(.
I'll have another update shortly :)
will be waiting, don't worry, your updates are worthy enough for us to wait... ;)
Ok it's been a while but i'm ready to post something :). I've done quite a bit of work but for some reason i tend to
start work on something, finish about 20%, then move onto something else. So it wasn't until recently that i actually
got around to finishing (or at least finished enough of) a few parts to make it worth posting.
I've changed a few things and i'm sure some people will question the choices i made, but most of the parts i changed
aren't finished yet so please don't judge on first impressions
Anyway, I'll be quiet now and get into it :);
First of all i decided to take the advice of Kibbler and Xion X2 and fix the midplate to accommodate 8-pin GPU cables.
I didn't want the extra holes in the midplate cover, so i marked exactly where i need to drill on the under-side
instead. This will make life much easier if i decide to upgrade the GPUs. The acrylic, however, has been fully drilled
out -

Thanks for the advice, guys. I think you were right and i'm glad i changed it :)
I also secured the acrylic to the door and PSU bracket, and made backside covers too -

To help with tubing runs i've decided to make a small mod to the acrylic on the mobo tray. I'll show you exactly what
i'll be doing with it in a future update but for now, this is all you get :) -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1335.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1340.jpg
Thanks for the forstner idea, Rick :D -

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1344.jpg
The acrylic was easy. The mild steel..... not so much :(. So i got through as much as i could until the bit died and
finished the rest with a drill and dremel -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1346.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1348.jpg

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1356.jpg
Lastly i had to cut the hole in the mobo tray. The bit sill had enough life to cut 1 last rough hole -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1369.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1371.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1379.jpg
The hole in the following pic may appear off centre with the hole in the acrylic, but it's just bad light. I'll show more in
the next update -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1380.jpg
Right, next up is a pump bracket. They need to be at slightly different levels otherwise they'd look a bit odd when the
tubing is installed. It still needs bending too which i plan to do when i make a pan brake some time soon -

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1486.jpg
A bit of fine tuning left and some small mods to the pumps but other than that it turned out ok.
I've been playing with some mesh lately too -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1487.jpg
I didn't like the back of the case too much or the look/design of the side panels so i started on some more. The
diagonal theme i had going will still be there but it will be different to the original -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1496.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1497.jpg
Using a scalpel to mark the aluminum works really well. It's harder to see than pen but when i'm cutting on the router
i don't have to stop and measure as often because the line is so fine and accurate. All i need to do is cut until the
line is juuust gone -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1501.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1504.jpg

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1721.jpg
To get accurate markings for the thumbscrew holes i screwed in the thumbscrews from the inside until they were just
poking out the other side. After i screwed a thumbscrew in each corner i lined up the new backplate and gave the
corners a tap with the hammer -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1724.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1726.jpg

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1738.jpg
I also needed to secure the mobo tray. I decided to get rid of the old bracket which was just a piece of 90 degree
aluminum angle riveted to the mobo tray. I replaced it with some solid aluminum square bar instead which i drilled and
tapped. This saved me drilling out rivets every time i needed to pull the mobo tray apart -

New -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1650.jpg
At this point i needed to secure it to the new back plate before i could finish it off -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1740.jpg
I drilled through the back plate and marked the bracket at the same time so the holes would line up -

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1758.jpg
Now that the bracket had been tapped and fitted i could take it off and finish it -

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1904.jpg
I also had a chance to make a sweet new bench. It has a steel frame and 1" MDF surface so it's super-duper solid
 -

I convinced my old man to buy a mig welder. He always said he wanted one so it's win win :) -

I was going to have the nut welded on the inside of the leg but changed my mind last second so i could have that
little bit of extra height. in the end i should have had it on the inside because the bench ended up a fraction too high
 -

I decided i wanted to make my own thumb screws after i had a lot of trouble finding nice after-market M3
thumbscrews for my lian li case. So, i get to add another tool to the collection. I can now do lots of other things too
and i'll show some further down -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1564.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1568.jpg
And here my fancy new workshop (yaaaay :D) -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1595.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1596.jpg

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1598.jpg
I started the side panels next using 3mm aluminum sheet -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1653.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1656.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1658.jpg
Halfway through the damn laminate trimmer bit me lol -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1659.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1660.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1667.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1668.jpg
Next day :p: -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1709.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1710.jpg
The blood's a bit dramatic because the cut's not that bad lol I just liked the shot :). I got very, very, very lucky! I
could dive into the whole gloves/no gloves debate here but i just can't work in them. In this particular case i think
they would have made things worse, as they might have caught up and done all kinds of damage, but who knows.
So back to the panel -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1669.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1676.jpg
And that's it for them. I need to finish other stuff before i can continue.
I got some parts back from the laser cutters too. If all goes well the new parts should look all right when they're
finished, but this is all i've done so far.
First i needed to make some more cuts in the back plate and face plate -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1776.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1778.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1790.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1798.jpg
Because of the way the faceplate was cut at the water jet cutters, each corner had a different radius after routing.
Although i liked the corners with a bit of a radius, they still needed to be sharpened -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1804.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1805.jpg
Backplate -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1779.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1782.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1795.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1797.jpg
This is the reason for the new holes -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1807.jpg
After routing -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1874.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1873.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1813.jpg

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1821.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1822.jpg
One last obstacle -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1832.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1854.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1855.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-.../IMG_18581.jpg
The next stage was some mesh -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1862.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1878.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1879.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1865.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1871.jpg
I looks too rough from the inside like that so i did some more cutting -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1880.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1881.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1882.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1884.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1886.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1887.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1890.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1892.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1894.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1896.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1897.jpg
I like that much better :). You won't be able to tell from the outside, but from the inside it's much neater. I still need
to do more work on the acrylic and remove the protective layer on the mesh so it still looks a bit crappy, but i'll save
that for another update.
I also started on the buttons but i'll need to re-do them as there are some small kinks i need to work out -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1677.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1680.jpg

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1696.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1698.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1702.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1684.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1688.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1690.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1691.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1692.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1695.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1705.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1708.jpg
That's all for that. I should have the new ones finished for next update, and don't worry about how they look ATM
because they're gonna change a lot. The screws will also be re-made from steel.
Next up is a bit of work i've been doing on the lathe.
I hate how the weight of the waterblocks on the GPUs causes them to sag over time, so this is my attempt at a fix -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1905.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1909.jpg
That hole goes through both the steel cover and the acrylic so it could be tapped -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1914.jpg
Get the height of the cards (like my pretty yellow gloves? :D) -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1916.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1918.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1920.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1921.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1922.jpg
Spun it around and drilled out the other end -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1926.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1927.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1928.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1930.jpg
I did that twice and made an end piece too -
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1931.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1933.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1935.jpg
Meh, it works, but it looks a bit crappy so i decided to fix it -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1943.jpg
Better, but not quite. They're still too fat, a bit more work should do it -
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1945.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-.../IMG_19491.jpg
That's better. I think it looks pretty good like that :).
I also bought some solid copper round bar with 19mm diameter to play around with. I don't want my tubing to veer off
at funny angles so, if all goes to plan, this piece i'm making will help with that. It's not finished yet but hopefully by
the next update it will be ready and you'll see what i plan to do with it -
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1951.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1954.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1960.jpg
I like the shape of the bitspower fittings so i did my best to replicate it -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1961.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1962.jpg
Unfortunately there was too much heat to drill through the whole thing. I will be buying a coolant system to solve
that but for now that's all for the copper work i've done.
Lastly :D i made some new case feet. I still need to buy some longer M3 screws and boar out the bottom slightly to
stick in some rubber pads, but they're pretty much finished -
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1711.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1713.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1718.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1965.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1966.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1969.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1974.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1976.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1980.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4fioqPTlKLw/S-...0/IMG_1984.jpg
Well that's it and that's all :). I'll try to stick to working on 1 part at a time and make my updates smaller and more
frequent.
Oh, and on a last note, this update is quite large lol (better late than never :p)
Thanks for checking in guys,
Callen
great work! enjoying this worklog,
+ access to nice machinery
beautiful work Callen.
not sure if i want it completed so soon... watching each step is entertaining.
gotta admire your skills... and tenacity; working inspite that injury!
you deserve all the praise!
 Gets better and better
:eek2:
i really don't know what else can i say...
