Thanks, Cpt. The paint I'll be using is the engine enamel, so it doesn't sparkle, but does have a relatively high gloss. (And, those would be the Lil Mermaid shoes with the little spiked heels ? :)

I can't seem to reach the end of this thread -- it keeps me stuck on page 8???

Anyway I really like the color scheme! Obviously I'm biased on the red but I looked at the same red specs you have. It looks very nice for the inside or out based on your pictures!!! I ended up using the krylon "outdoor furniture" red on rooster. Looking at my pics you can't tell, but it is almost exactly the same as the red on the dominators you have (i have the same colored doms).

Edit: I posted and now I can see page 9... with only my comment, weird.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm enjoying seeing Rooster come to life.

Spent the day yesterday prepping the motherboard tray for the Black Pearl build ... now to actually apply the paint. It sure is easier just building a water cooling loop in a case, compared to this prep, cut, and paint work. My hat is off to you case modders.

Time now for another exciting "Let's-watch-paint-dry" update.

The mobo tray was primed first with a light coat of self-etching primer, followed by a few coats of High Build Primer. I then wet sanded with 400 Grit, followed by 600 Grit. In keeping with my "mod around the house" theme, I present this dramatic photo of my primed mobo tray on the counter in the laundry room:

After drying overnight, the panel was cleaned with a tack cloth and sprayed with the Dupli-Color engine red paint - a couple of light sprays, then a medium spray - all done within an hour as per the instructions for the enamel spray paint:

Thanks guys. Glad you like my splash of red (at least this way when I bleed putting it all back together again, it won't be so noticeable).

I've reached a roadblock ... struggling like heck with what to do with the mid-plate. It's got two large holes where I really don't want them. Trying to figure out how to set up my routing for the PSU cables, and also my tubing/res configuration. So, no pics to post, cause I doubt you want to see my frazzled face as a result of my brain hurting. Any and all suggestions welcomed. I've read so many Black Pearl and V2000, work logs I'm seeing them in my dreams.

Shazza, I had trouble with the same thing. As you know I ended up not doing a whole lot with it, but I should have. I wasnt even going to try and fill the large holes, an entirely new mid plate could be realitively easy I think. I wanted some sort of 1/2 od pass thru barbs but couldnt find anything I liked. After getting to the point that I think you are at now I just took the easy way out.

You know, now that my project is done, I cant stop thinking about how I would like to change things. This will probably happen sometime next year. Now I will be switching gears a little bit. I flip flop between projects and my Mustang Cobra has been feeling neglected just hanging out in the garage. I will still be checking up on this project though so no slacking.

I once looked at a worklog by charles h, on using a hammond box. If you go to the end of the tread you will see what I am getting at.
As there is a photo of how charles covers the holes in the mid-plate of the TJ07.

Glad to see you are still making progress. Funny thing about worklogs, when I was doing mine something that might take a few hours to get right is posted on here with just a pic or two. Its hard to get across some of the actual work involved.

That's still the old 5 liter isn't it Nitro? Those old 5 liters were nice engines. I wanted to get an old fox body notch back. There a bit hard to find now though, most seem to have been converted to drag cars.

I currently have new heads, cam, long tube headers and full magnaflow exhaust..... and when that not enough I just give a little shot of the 'ol laughing gas. Yes it is the 5.0L engine. With all the supporting mods its good for a low 12 sec quarter mile, the suspension is setup for street/road racing. Going fast in a straight line just isnt that exciting to me.

BTW.... I love fox notches, but yes they getting rare.

@ WinstonSthlm - the DVD mod really doesn't have anything directly to do with the Black Pearl. I was just chopping it up to get the case to use for my Crystalfontz display :p:

Going to wait 24 hours to paint the pieces. I could do it after an hour, but even though the little spray booth exhausts to the outside, I want to limit my exposure to nasty chemicals (and I wear a respirator).

OKay, who am I kidding? I'm just tuckered out, and don't have the patience to do all those little pieces carefully :p: And yes, this is an exhaustingly long way to go about painting a case.

You seem to have good weather over there, here in sweden it's like 5 degrees and rain and I can't paint outside. Starting to feel dizzy if I'm painting for a longer period since the ventilation isn't good at all :P

When you spray paint what time of day do you do it? Morning time or late late evenings? Here is Long Beach, CA it seems the best time for me is in mornings, after that to hot and windy..

I usually paint in the morning, cause I'm worn out in the afternoom (I'm rather old, you know). I tried painting outside in the summer - BAD idea here, got really bad orange peel from the paint drying before it hit the metal. Also, all the small stuff is being painted inside an air-conditioned garage.

me: "Hey, do we have any of these cute little drill thingamajiggies, I think they're called Chucks."

him: "Of course we have chucks, that's what holds the drill bit in - even you know that."

me: "Well look at this picture - do we have one of these? (showing him the photo of "Chuck" in CptDF's log)"

him: "Yes, I ( "I" being dramatically emphasized) have one of those - it's called a step-down drill or a unibit. But I don't use the larger sizes, mine's smaller - and I didn't give it a name (okay, I made that last part up ;))"

me: "Oh, OKay, maybe I'll get one of those some day."

Several hours pass ... Lou goes to run errands and to the hobby store to pick up his new locomotives.

He returns home (opening the garage door and ruining my radiator experiment :( )

I skipped painting the sliding bracket but they came out really nice, i was kinda afraid that they would scratch when opened but maybe not.

How did those slot brackets hold up on the paint? They seem to have a cheap zinc coating on them and are also steel which i was bummed about.

I almost didn't paint the brackets or some of the tiny pieces -- They are pretty rough, but I sanded a bit and used the self-etching primer. Tried to just apply light paint spray, so hopefully I won't have any issues fitting it all back together. I'll be letting the engine enamel-painted pieces sit for at least two weeks, so fingers crossed ...

Of course, I realized the bars/slots on the side panels are not painted, but they will just need to stay that way for now.

Thx, skinnee and CP. Feeling a bit punky today, so not a lot done. No good stories, unless you count flooding the laundry room while rinsing the new radiator, but that's pretty typical around here.

Changed out the MCR 320 on the Torture Rack for the MCR 420 so I can check temps. Planning to test Push/Pull as well, but will have to anchor the rack down so it doesn't go flying around the room:

Also worked a bit on my radiator and PSU placement. Unscrewed the PSU plate on the back, turned it upside down, and flipped it over. Should work fine (I assume there's no issue running this PSU upside down?):

Glad to see you got a couple unibits - they're very useful.

There's probably no proper way to say this so I'm just gonna say it...

be sure to use lube and lots of it! I've found that cream is less messy than the liquid but they both make a mess. Using lube is a PITA to clean up after as all the bits get stuck to... Ok, that's as far as I'm going - I think you get the idea.

I'm sure Cam will be along soon to take this down a level. ;)

Bad ass radiator looking sweet and see you got some Gentle Typhoons, nice :)

I'm also dividing if I should use a shroud. It will be really tight between fans and MB if I use a shroud tho.

Think a shroud do more difference if you run the fans in slow mode, I read that in a test somewhere :rolleyes:

I was thinking about it real hard... minus your MM, you dont have anything finished. :rofl:

And even the MM i think is expecting some upgrades...

Stage II means no finished work.

Stage III means u have more then enough parts for 5 computers, yet none is complete.

Im at stage IV where i get cpu's faster then i can finish planning the system out even.. :rofl:

since January I've completely replanned WC system two times, bought and sold full range of watercooling parts enough for whole system twice and even now this is going to be ended, on what stage am I? :rofl:

I like to think of my ever-changing builds as "upgrades." Each system I've built has run for at least 6 months, with the exception of the Smurf TR build. And that was never intended to stay on the TR ... it was simply an exercise to improve my modding skills. The RGB MM has been running 24/7, chugging right along. Yes, it may get changed around a bit, but only in the interest of giving me something to do. And the Lian Li air build in Florida is still in one piece (hehe, but that could change in a couple of months). The current Torture Rack build is running 24/7 as well, and is actually being used as a test bench :eek: The Black Pearl build is just for fun - trying to learn how to do some new things. And, there might be one or two in the planning stages :p:, but nothing definitive. Trust me, the relatives are quite happy with the hand-me-downs.

And, about having all those spare parts lying around, I'll have to take the fifth on that one :D

Fantastic progress you're making. Watching paint dry is like um...watching paint dry - but I see it was well worth it. Results look really clean.

I'm totally loving your Gentle Typhoons. That's like Jumbo Shrimp or Modern History only better. :D

A comment on the XT photos - it looks like there are two black sections on the top - that's just the way the metal photographs in natural light.

Also, to clarify - the 4870X2 above is not new - that's the RMA for the one I killed in the last build (which is why I bought another Sapphire). Gonna try to reshoot that XT to see if I can get those black stripes outta there.

That was the very first GTZ I bought ... dunno how I did it, but somehow, I messed it up when trying to attach the compression fittings - I'm sure I can figure out a way to recover it, but the 2nd GTZ I bought is still pumping away on the cube build (and with blue Feser One :cool: - can't wait to take it apart).

No 5870 here - just the little 5850. I wanted a new card that was no longer than the Micro board, thus I rationalized the 5850. I've still got the 3x GTX 285 setup going for gaming sessions.

Hay shazza, are those black strips on the XT photo, just from the chamfered edges?

For that striped thread in your block, you could try Heli-Coils. I have used then before with great success, but only in steel and ali.

I have google Heli-Coil to see if there is a Heli-Coil set just for plastic or if the standard one will work, and found this http://www.helicoil.in/
At the bottom of the web page there is an article about Dodge threaded plastic inserts that are made out of brass.
I have not had the chance to play with these, yet!, but looks good, see for yourself, hope it helps.

I ordered the sheets from online metals. As SD says, you can probably find cheaper on ebay, but these guys were fast and had small quantities available - it's nice quality as well.

Yeah, I was driving right through that valley pictured headed west on my way back from Temecula. Needless to say, it was a bit hard to focus on the road with such a spectacular sight right in front of me.

I know - it was quite nice. A good time of year - not too much smog, but enough "haze" to make some interesting colors.

A bit sidetracked on the build - wanted to get some benchmark data on the 5850 before water cooling it. Installed Batman Arkham Asylum, then had nothing but trouble - didn't know if it was game, the dumba$$ Windows Live profile stuff, or what. Spent all evening trying to sort it out. Disconnected the internal DVD drive this morning and all is good - :shrug:

Un-installed Batman and moved on to Dragon Age-Origins with another DVD drive. All is well - love the game so far.

So, sorry no build updates, I'll try not to get too distracted by the game. I guess this is just part of my ever-wandering way I go about doing a new build :p:
