I have a mach1 and it cant hold reset on this damn board! BS!
Anyhow Im running 3x256mb xms3500 rev1.1 at max Vdimm and default VDD. I defin. need more Vdimm, I can get upto 230 but mem starts to crap:(. In my NF7 I can do 230-240 with 3.3v. V-mod anyone? DDTung where are you? :D

Man Abit needs a BIOS that reads under 0c! I have no CPU temp lol even clocked at 2.7ghz.
In my nf7 I could boot at 3ghz with 2.3v but couldnt make it into windows. Maybe 2.313v will work if its not undervolting.;)

Very slight undervolt on the Vcore now. Like 2.134 is really 2.09

Yeah, my voltages are 1.96v Vcore, 3.2v Vdimm and 1.6v Vdd.
EDIT: also the multi's still dont work for me.
Ok, here the reply from Abit about the cut trace. it WILL BE ALL the new boards too but not visible.
Cut Trace Answer
We have official word that the cut trace was necessary to correct a problem. Newer boards have the same fix.
The first lot of AN7 was with that trace cut; however, we have fully tested every piece of AN7 and all the functionalities are OK. Please ignore it as it in no way effects the board, infact it is a fix and needs to remain that way.
Please dont ask about what the specific problem was as I dont know and I am not going to ask for the schematics of the PCB layout and try to figure it out, just sufice it to say that all is well with that trace cut and future boards will not have it be visible.

A dead slot does not indicate that it was to high of a voltage. only accurate way to diagnose is get a straight answer from Abit, trace the circuit on the board, or to look at the schematic...

Ok, this is where I'm at right now.
I don't think this board likes BH5 chips that much or at least not my older KHX 3500 that are marked
"Kingston 4.5"
I thought all along they were BH5's but I'm having doubts now.
At least with this board. In other boards the stuff ran so so also
but best in my P4P800. I tried 4 sticks and all of them errored out in Prime at 221 and rebooted the system where the KHX 3500 CH5's ran just great in it. Again I stress that this was the ram the Abit techs used to check this board. I doubt they used BH5's.
The Buffalo 3200 BH5's have to be tested again. They also ran sos so *compared* to the Ch5.
Now, I'm Priming at 225 but with Interface disabled in the hope of burning in the NB this way for better future results.
I also wanted to take all the possible bottle necks that might cause errors while trying to take the FSB higher. So I though perhaps there is bad voltage regulation on the AN7, so I stuck my Hynix DDR500 in. It loves the Hynix ram for sure.
Now this ram is doing 225 at 2.60v I'm giving it 2.65v just to give it more edge. I mean it can do 275 at 1:1 so 225 1:1 is not big deal. heck I bet it can run at 2.55v but I haven't tested it that far yet.
Yes it's just Priming away here plus my CPU Mhz is improved.
I had it 227 but I think the ram kicked out or the higher Vdimm made the board unstable when using the other rams.. This is what I'm trying to find out.
I can tell you one thing, the system is running much smoother,
Whether it's the low Vdimm {probably} or the Hynix chips {don't know yet} or having Inrerface disabled I don't know yet either.
Too early to tell about any of them really.
But, with all that's happened, I will say if you get a working board and not expect miracles, plus you have knowlege about N2 boards, for $115 is makes a nice playtoy :cool:

A pretty big difference in benchmarking scores.
I'm not too sure of how much a performance hit games actually take real time with CI disabled. But remember one thing in exchange for turning it off, you migt but able to take the fsb much higher making up for some of the loss and maybe also allowing lower latencies and response time.
It's a trade off. Hey, I'm into this business for fun 1st and to see higher number even if performance takes a hit LOL

I have to put some cooling on the South Bridge. it gets super hot man. My finger hurt after I held it there for 3 sec. I felt cause I lost my USB mouse Priming at 227.
The keyboard, Prime, everything else worked OK except the mouse. Instead of trying a PS/2, I'm going to put a NB fan/sink on it first and see what happens. It used to work and my early NF7 versions.
so.. if i enable cpu interface im able to get mor fsb.. but i my "timmings" is higher ?!
No CPU Interface enabled gives you 20/30MHz FSB worth of performance due to faster timings but reduces potential overclocking speed on the FSB...
I.E. 200MHz with CPU Interface ON will probably equal 220MHz with CPU Interface OFF.
So keep it on, it's fastest :D

You'll get better scores but not higher FSB with CI enabled.

Cause I would have really liked a board that would have allowed me to bench at 12.5 x 244 or there abouts.. :) On the NF7v2 in my possession it's 13x 234 or there abouts as a max 3Dmark HexusPifast stable.
The same board was doing 250 x 11.5 with CI enabled. 252 as a max. With a different cpu.
Well I have tested a few different kinds of ram on the AN7, and the my final conclusion is the CH5 modules are the best for the AN7. The system is extremely snappier with the CH5's then with the BH5's. I know hard to believe right but like I said, Abit tweaked this board with CH5 sticks not BH5. This is only my opinion and I think I'm right on with this one.
I tested 4 sticks of KHX 3500 with "Kingston 4.5" on the chips. It's older ram and pretty sure it's BH5. Were the worst.
Tested 2 sticks of Buffalo 3200 BH5. 3rd best but still not great.
Tested 2 sticks of A-Data Hynix PC4000. This worked 2nd best.
I have 2 sticks of old school TwinMOS BH5's but they are in my P4P800 rig. I don't expect better results with it anyway.

Just posting to add another AN7 to the POS pile. Lucky if I can get thorugh a 3d mark run at 215. Playing with the nb voltage and I feel like it does nothing. Maybe the bios really is holding the board back, or of course the ghetto style. Post anything that helps you guys. WHat do you do with enhanci PCI and akso cpu disconnect function?
Oh my my... didn't notice this thread till one of my friend told me about this... Just gotten mine today. And the board has the cut traces as well. Aparently this motherboard should have arived at Malaysia (this is where i'm from) last week. Well I guess it was not a miss shippment. Those ABIT workers have to do some last minute correction on this board... hence this is the answer to that cut trace on the board. Hope my luck is not as bad as others. Will post my results in like 7 hrs later. Till then, just some minor note, ill be using the Mushkin PC3500 High Performance 2x256 CH5 on this motherboard. Wish me luck guys.

twiggy, you on bios 13, or whatever the stock one is?
with bios 13 im at 225 and doing fine, i have been able to boot at 227, and 230 is almost booting now. with more time and burn in i think it will.

Yeah Im on BIOS 13. Im in the same boat as you, I can get upto 230 but havent had any luck getting it stable.
My temp read out is always 0.0c no matter how much voltage or overclock I thro at it. :(

You will notice a difference.
i have some CH5
it has been proven to work at 230 adn 235, want me to try it in my an7 and see if i can make 230 work?

im gunna try lax timings wiht my bh5 now., i can get 227 with 2-2-2-11, so i think with 2-3-3-11 i can do 230.. thinking it might be my ram as my friend adn i both have nearly the same hardware and hes having ram issues at these speeds.
so, im gunna relax bh5 times see if i cant get 235 up, then ill swap the ch5 in and test her out.

wow.. my AN7 just had a total fit..
tried for 230 with more lax bh5 times, and it freaked out on me and i ended up having to reset cmos twice pull battery and load fail safe defaults to get back to windows!!!
soooooo.. yeah.. gunna go unplug my psu and let it sit for a minute then try to get back to 225 like i was before.
any idea why it would do soemthing like this?

it wont run 166fsb anymore.im gunna pull the board tomorow most likely and go back to my epox 8rda+. then when the new revision of this is out in a few weeks ill RMA.

Have u disabled bios and video shadowing in bios?? I think its sommet like that. Just an idea cos when you reset bios the default setting for those are enabled.

Evil_Spork - do a full reset. pull the power cord, press the power switch a couple of times to dischard any charged caps and then pull the battery out. leave it out for a minimum of 30mins. 24hours could be better.
this has got me out of many very weird bios situations including vanishing fsb and disappearing features. try it if you haven't already.
Another thing to try is shutdown the PSU and press button to discharge the caps, remove the memory, switch on the PSU and boot. Obviously it wont boot but then shutdown put memory back in and see if it works, probably wont but worth a shot.

I might RMA for a NF7S v2 because I never RMA'd to a company. and yes, my board does not do what it's supposed to do. They push 5 bit FID right? TOo bad half multipliers don't work for crap . Also, my board has been flaking at 200 sometimes.

AN7 running 2 XMS BH5 sticks in DC (10 months old)
2 Maxtor PATA 80 gig drives in SATA RAID 0
2500+ with SLK900u 92mm Tornado
TruePower 430
Have had no problems. Not even a hiccup. I have the scratch, I have the resistor on the IC leg (Sporks pic is my board), and am on stock BIOS.
I started out with 200 x 11 and installed Windows. I then dropped multi to 10 and raised FSB in 5 Mhz steps till it wouldn't boot. I finally got no boot at 230. Backed it down to 227 and everything was fine. I have booted to windows at 225 x 11 and it runs good. Stability is another thing, at 225 x 11 can't get even one iteration of Prime, won't pass the CPU #1 test in 3Dmark03. Everything seems stable at 220 x 11.5. More testing will be necessary to confirm this.
All this was done with Vdimm up all the way, Vdd up all the way, and Vcore at 1.9v.
I could never get anywhere near these numbers with My A7N8X, so I'm happy. It's not the holy grail of boards, but I'm keeping mine (at least till I can RMA for a new Rev!!!!)
All you folks RMA'ing remember it is Abit's policy to replace RMA's with SAME revision, so if there is indeed another revision you'll probably be SOL. I would return the POS for a refund if possible, Abit doesn't deserve a single sale from this mess :(

A friend of mine did had the same experience, he thought the mobo was dead until he brought his cpu to my rig.

If the BBB sees many of the very same compliants about a company, it will end up affecting their overall reputation.

I was told to contact my district attorney here in Florida. Florida doesn't take too kind to companies that rip off people. Now imagine if this was a car, a dishwasher, or some other home device. They would be fined and a law suit brought for
KNOWNINGLY releasing a faulty and dangerous product to consumers. This board can catch fire very easily. We don't take it very seriously since we work with boards and electricity, but the state takes the totally different view of this.
Again, it all comes down to repect, and it's obviously Abit couldn't care less about you or your time or feelings. As long the cash flow is there and vendors are ordering, they couldn't give a rat's ass.
So what that this board doesn't work right, has no 1/2 multies that work right, kills other componets, dies or is DOA, has shody soldering and post work done to fix a faulty electrical component is liable. This company needs to be fined and some restrictions put on their imports to the US. This would fix their wagon and they would think twice before shipping out faulty rushed boards.
And expecially at holiday time.
I'm going to hold on to my board as evidence in case any dept here asks me for it.

I think it's high time someone, anyone, held these mobo manufacturers in check. If this were a car, child stroller or other consumer product, and it was brought to the attention of the authorities, they would take the needed action.
They don't hear compliants from anyone so they don't know about all this.
This was rushed, non working or DOA product. It has post work on it to fix voltage regulation problems with shody unprofessional soldering work. This boards are dangerous and can cause fire.
I'm surprised we haven't heard of a fire yet. Good thing though.
I filed my complaint with the BBB. it took me alittle time but I did it.
On Mon I'm going to call my attorney general and ask what I can do. I'm not going to sit idly by and do nothing. If you do nothing too, remember that the next time you get another board like this at holiday time.
If you file a complaint wit the BBB when it comes to step 3, asking you to "search" for the company, just put "Abit" in the field and hit search. It goes thru the BBB files and will bring up Abit computer company. Just choose that.
Lets just get it over with and burn them at the stake, or hang them! DO stir the kettle, perhaps the lynch mob mentality will prevail.
Get your money back, never buy another Abit product, honestly this thread has lost its hardware value! A section of the forum has already been dedicated to Gripes & Moans, its called "Speak Freely" that would probably be an apropriate place to continue.

Nah. This is definitely abit's fault. You can't even justify shifting the blame to nvidia. This is the 2nd disaster Abit has put out in a row now (ic7-max3 anyone?). When I get an NF3 250 board, it sure as hell won't be from abit.

I would go with an Albatron Kx18 II pro or whatever it is .. Seems liek the best board as far as overclocking goes .. All the reviewers love it .. They say voltages are a little shady .. Then again - dont the nf7-s wobble a lil too ?? All the nforce 2 boards are :smileysex wobbling and boinking the same broad anyways..
If your psu is quality and your sense about what you are doing is fine , you are on your way ..

NFS:Underground is much faster at 208 then 221. I'm interested in real performance results. High numbers are nice for bragging and screen shots, but I want what's fastest for me.

Have any of you tried running it at the supported specs (not overclocked) and having problems? If so and you have problems then you have legitimate complaints against ABIT. If not, your operating your board out of spec.
I dont own one, and I have read about the cut trace and hand-soldered resistors but that does not mean it is a bad board that does not operate as it is advertised. If you dont like it why dont you just send it back and get another board.

The board is NOT STABLE. IT HAS NO 1/2 MULTPLIER OPTIONS.
The Guru software LOCKS UP. 1.75v VDD undervolts to 1.72v
There are reboots. Many people's board DIED the same day if it wasn't DOA so I'm speaking for THEM TOO. You see, I care about other people too not just myself. Do you have a problem with that?
Do you know Abit touts the overclocking features on this board
like THEIR "OC GURU" software.
I suggest you stick to things that are your business and know what you're talking about.
TT has this whole thing nailed right on the head in my opinion. Why release something that has obvious evidence of a flawed design to a market full of critics who work with these boards all the time? Chevrolet doesn't release a new Corvette without properly testing it for months, why should other companies get away with providing consumers with less?
My AN7 arrives today and I hope I can get 11 or 12 x 200 out of it, but from others' experiences, it may very well be a return.

Also your CPU should work just fine on AUTO. The fact you have multipliers to change is a "free cheese" item that ABIT gives you. It does not mean that they can officially support the board if you change the multiplier. If you can, thats great. If not, well, thats life.

Also why dont you include what I quoted by you, that your panties are all in a wad because you cant do 208 FSB. Thats not supported by tthe board.

Take notice of what Abit claims as features of their AN7 board. "...allows you to maximize performance...for the hardware enthusiast...". Understand what he is talking about now?
And Cobray, I see you use a NF7-S at 220 FSB. I assume you paid about $100 for it as many people did. Do you feel better knowing that they spend about $15 in parts but charged the remainder as technology research? Just what did that $85 go towards?
thewoody, they just say "maximize performance". They dont state that the board will support over 200 FSB. "Maximize performance" could mean alot of things. This is just marketing talk.
Im not sure either what you mean by it costs them $15 to make the board and they sell it for $100. Thats called capitalism. Good for them. Thats what keeps them in business.
I retired my NF7, I really like this board plus its more stable then my NF7. Im content with 225x12 for now, Im sure Abit will release a BIOS that'll fix most stuff. This board is rock stable IMO.....
However if Abit releases another rev. of this board I WILL be very very pissed.

Actually I have some .5 multi's but no the odd number ones. 10.5, 12.5 and so on works but I know 10.5 sux with high FSB.

The actual fsb was 228... but the problem is that I can't do it again. I had it totally stable at 228x10.5, §§§§ it was even prime stable but now it has gone to crap and I don't know what has changed.
This is my first post *newb*
Also I have a bench at 229fsb, but I had the cpu variation error.

Here's my big problem.
The motherboard is stable and can run prime at 230fsb with no probs, also cpu interface is on.
The problem is that after a while of being in windows, my keyboard and mouse begin to not function anymore, and I have to restart. Pretty ghetto don't you think? So I can run 230x10.5, but the an7 as of this moment, won't allow me to use the mouse and keyboard. I thought it was freezing, but when I pressed the shutdown; windows did it's little shutting down ticker thing and it shut down. If they can solve that someone minor problem, it'll be a good board. And I just wanna show this mushkin level 2 pc3500

i have rma'd mine. the voltage was a constant 2.0+!!!!! no matter what i set it as in the bios, it wouldn't read different in the uGuru nor the bios. AND the default voltage for my 2500 was 1.84 for some inexplicable reason. i, too, had the cut trace that looked like it was done with a philips head.
despite all the neg's, i think i'll try another. this board has the perfect layout for my yeong yang cube case. i don't want to go back to the nf7 now. but i won't swing for strike 3. if the next one doesn't work out, i'll just wait until v2.
i had to come over here to catch all these personal experiences. there weren't enough "guinea pigs" at overclockers. you guys have been quite informative.

It's supposed to be an enthusiast board and it's supposed to overclock. You keep saying the board is fine just because it will run 200fsb? Well §§§§, so did my old Soyo KT400. Does that make it a good board? Again, Hell No. With the cash people (including myself) are shelling out for this board, it damn well better perform like it. Also from your post, I dont know what you consider to be "a good board". If you ask 100 people you can get 100 different answers. Thats why Abit and other manufacturers give specifications.
And yes, I bought the NF7 because of its good reputation as an overclocker. I can do 220 FSP no problem. But should I start crying if I cant do 225? No, because when I bought it I damn well knew that it is only rated for up to 200 FSB. If I could only do 201 FSB well then that would suck and thats life. But if I could not do 200 FSB I would be raising hell and doing an RMA and looking for another board.
Its real appropriate that this board is called "Xtreme", since there seems to be a few extreme whiners on this board, which unfortunately drowns out some of the more pleasant and coherent discussions here. This is a great time to be into computers. They are getting better, faster and cheaper over time.
And If ya'll dont like it, then go ahead and find some venture capitalists, get a group of decent hardware engineers, and build your own board. No one is stopping you. Do you think that in 1980 Bill Gates was hanging out at the homebrew computer club and saying "U kn00w the 41t4iR 8800 su>< d00d, im calling the attorney general". :rolleyes:
He said for CPUs, and that's probably only because abit fixed the undervolting issue that was occurring on the NF7. What good is stable vcore when you're only running at 220fsb?
