Oh cool I was thinking about building my own cnc but other projects have taken the front seat instead... I seems to be a pretty valid investment but my friends dad owns a body shop with loads of fabricating tools so I have no real reason to... H
just out of curiosity, what have you used in the past as far as parts and pricing goes???
Looking at the invoice, I placed my order on the 14th of May (this was my first order for the MM Pedestal base) then about a week later I placed my MM Ascension Extended order. Now if I believe things are much faster if you don't order any customizations (for instance power coating... I also picked the Ascension CYO which is a semi-custom grab and bag of which panels you want)...Quote:

With access to a shop and all the fixings you seem pretty set and I can see how building a CNC could be placed on the back burner... however, my previous "creations" were always for the sake of fun... I just wanted to see if I could do it really cheap (with enough precision to etch PCB) ... Results for the "poor man's" builds: worked, but they're real slow, and require near constant adjustments.Quote:

They make everything! well... almost. But even so, you need to do some research and learn about what is what because there's a big difference, say between HSR and SR LM Guides for example.

Update:
I recently was able to find 2 more Feser.480 Radiators, meaning I now have 3, which will be installed on the underside of the top panel. This puts me at 6 radiators in the MM Ascension and 2 Feser Monstas in the pedestal below, so 8 radiators thus far. ... also, I'm debating whether or not to buy two more Feser.360 rads... I also bought 3 more pumps and think I'm going to by 2 more tonight, we'll see.
Shipping News: I've been informed by Ben at MM as of the 6th of July that I should be receiving shipping notice by the end of this week. While I do feel that this MM order is taking more time than what I expected, I realize that doesn't mean a heck of a lot, for my expectations were based in non-reality and not on the inner workings of MM's process and also to Ben's credit, I have been a difficult customer: I've made several changes a few weeks into the order, I didn't hesitate to send lots and lots of questioning e-mails where I nit-picked over many details, and all the time he has indeed been quite professional and kind. :)
Side Panel News: Dave of (UN) designs is continually and patiently waiting on me to provide the details of the custom side panels. I had been gone a few days however I've most certainly been taking my time. It's hard to make a decision on something of this nature without being able to visualize everything together, so I've been slowly creating a sketchup design that I will then transpose my panel designs onto, in order to give myself the perspective I feel I need. Anyway, I would just like to give a big thanks to him for his patience, helpfulness, and understanding! Not to mention the rad grills he produced for me turned out exceptionally and (I think) they will most certainly be one of the aspects that sets this MM Ascension apart from others. :)
I would also like to thank EVERYONE at XS for baring with me by allowing me to post boring posts such as this that don't include lots and lots of pictures. :D
well, this is certainly an xtremesystems and seemingly a worthy tribute :)

Also, I've decided on the color for the rad grills. I'm not going to powder coat them and I'm not going to have them detailed at a body shop. Instead, I've decided to have ALL the rad grills, the motherboard tray, the bay trays, the (UN) brackets, the radiators (if possible), the CPU block and every last screw, bolt, and nut NICKEL COATED IN BLACK SPARKLE, in the same black sparkle nickel coating as the 3 GPU blocks I will be getting:

I've scouted out a number of companies that can do the job but if anyone has any recommendations or knows of someone or a company who can professionally nickel coat the large quantity of items I intend to have coated in Sparkle Black, please let me know. :)
I'll have to sandblast a number of the components beforehand and I wonder about the wisdom of doing this to my radiators. I don't want to damage them, I may have to only nickel coat the outsides and protect the inner radiator, I'm not sure.
So, that's my decision. If anyone has any compelling reasons why this is a terrible idea I'm most willing to listen. I hope to have the case assembled with all 42 Enermax Twisters buzzing away (at the least) and pics flowing out no later than a day after I get the cases. ... I'm one happy camper, it seems action is finally taking place! :)
I actually purchased, besides those already mentioned, 4 other Feser.480s + 2 Thermochill.480s (15mm) + 2 Thermochill.360s (15mm) + 2 Thermochill.240s (15mm) and have 2 extra Feser.240s I've not yet decided what to do with... All for upcoming builds though for sure. Plus, whenever I see Feser.480s anywhere I get a little insane just because of their rarity ... well at least in my luck with finding them. All the parts laying flat on the floor (along with many other parts not shown) will be sand blasted and then nickle coated sparkling black. This is one of my next tasks.
MM sent me a flawless case. The packaging was incredible. I don't think I've ever spent more time UNPACKING anything in my entire life. The Pedestal for this Ascension will arrive in a few days.
the nickel is a great idea Wil :D I considered fiishing the inside of my case in nickel but a budget cut me out of that - for you its perfect!

I didn't realize sand plasters were so inexpensive so now I'm waiting for harbor harbor freight or one of the other hardware stores to open so I can go check out some sand blasters and by one if they have what I want. I intend to get a underhood blaster. To me, it's worth spending a little extra in order to not deal with the mess + buy protective equipment (though I could probably just use most of my welding gear if I did get a bottle sandplaster.
As far as copper prep goes, well, I can't even imagine what "contamination means" unless you're referring to copper's tendency to become more rigid when applied pressure hits it, in which case annealing would solve that easily. I really don't think a sand blaster is going to detriment the copper in the radiators however to the point where annealing is even remotely needed. I should mention, I'll only be blasting the side enclosures of my rads, not the fins within, I'm going to cover them up with painters tape, then cardboard, then more painters tape.... If that's not enough in tests I'll cut aluminum to cover either sides fins.

PS - I'm currently at a powder coating and plating company hanging out and getting a grand tour of how everything works... I'm learning some stuff but I had no idea how much effort and how many different steps and the depth of art/science behind the entire process.
Anyway, I'm not getting anything coated today. Just chatting it up with I believe the owner. A real mellow fellow.

upon sand blasting, the surface will be extremely vulnerable to moisture, oil (from our skin), and other particles from the environment.
thats where the 4 hours window comes into play, so make sure you primed/coat it within the 4 hours window\
if you're looking for SA3 profile, an electric sander would help :). you really don't have to go through the trouble of sand blasting them.
i have no prior experience with copper, but i can look it up for you.

I don't think it will increase cosmetic appearance much anymore (since both front and back of the rad will either be covered by fans and(or) fan grill and the chemical solvents I've been reading about I fear will harm the bonds.
As far as contamination is concerned, aside from taking the obvious actions like wearing latex gloves, after I remove the paint (by let's just say sanding), couldn't I just wrap the entire rad in a few layers of saran wrap real fast to keep it safe until it's time for it to be nickel coated?

If I can find three Bitspower GPU blocks this week I'm going to switch the motherboard back over to Bitspower blocks. I have lots of trivial updates I could post, but really I'm waiting to build still, thus the delays.

Nickel plating plans have changed, I think for the better (and certainly for the less expensive, I'm getting powder coating at cost of material... plus the guru doing it is brilliant at his many crafts... he actually does do plating but... well the chemicals are nasty and after much thought I decided against it).Quote:

Alex (the powder coater's) talent and what I've seen him produce is what convinced me to go this route in the end. This 3 coat layering (2 different colors and a top coat) applied in a manner that requires years of experience produced the above sample which is just a scrap of aluminum.
Admittedly he is taking his time, partially my fault because I was flat on my back sick for a week and didn't come to look at the samples he had made promptly but also he's not earning a nickel for doing any of this for me, so I fully expect him to prioritize his money making endeavors ahead of my powder coating requests. I'm going in tomorrow again to learn and hopefully bring some stuff home with me this time.

Status: Working on fan controller, waiting for more parts, working on custom bay reservoirs with internally installed LCD screens, rads will not be painted the same color as above, the above color takes on basically whatever color is ambient in a room (thus the reddish tone).
EDIT: Not all rad grills shown, nor did I photography every last powder coated part of this color. ... battery died.
Just playing that waiting game... I could assemble the bulk of it but I'm also waiting for the screws I'll be using... Wait, wait, wait.. That's what I've been doing quite a lot of. Live and learn, next build I fully intend to have it organized so as it is much more fast paced. :)Quote:

I'm envision and hope that including the rad grills of the same color I'll have created just the correct amount of contrast to leave a balanced look.
The radiators are going to be white, so, wherever a radiator is attached, the order is this from outside to inside: external rad grill -> case panel -> enermax fan -> radiator -> internal rad grill ...

Yeh that powdercoating finish is gorgeous. What colour is it?
Well, Alex mixed a few different colors together and also did three layers. He deemed the color 'Bleeding Black Smoke' ... He's the harshest critic of his own work. I can't wait to wheel the case out in bright sunlight to take some pics. It appears silver tinted with these almost monochrome-opalescent "bleeding" puffs of "smoke" alternating back and forth as you move by it. Yet, it's very subtle at the same time. ... I wish I could give you a straight answer or number in regard to the powder number but I can't remember which ones he mixed nor the ratio. I'll ask this week when he gets back from a vacation with his 5 year old.Quote:

Notice how Dave designed these Absolute Brackets so they're fully adjustable along the mounting part of the brackets length. I requested this and I also asked that the UN logo be flipped about because despite me being groggy and not taking any shots of the Absolutes with the logo shown proper above, it will show correctly when it comes time to mount my pumps in the fashion I intend to.
Anyhow, also thought this photo might give a glimmer of the powder coating reflective nature. You can vaguely make out my reflection in the brackets along with the window behind me.

The below sketchups are just to demonstrate the basic idea for the most part. For instance, the LCD screen shown would not be the one I'd choose to have within these reservoirs.

The base idea is to enclose a LCD screen within a reservoir.
I need to think about directing the flow down from the bottom up over the top of the LCD screen.
I of course want the LCD screen to be perfectly viewable but at the same time I think it would be really cool to see the current of water jetting past.
I'll be fabricating the exterior out of solid black derlin. The front of the reservoir as well as the entirety of the LCD enclosure within will be transparent plexi. I'm aiming to install a single LCD in each reservoir that takes up as much area as possible within my dimensional constraints. I'm ordering the plastics today and will be machining the reservoirs myself.
I'm looking for suggestions or ideas of any kind. :)

Apologies if you explained this earlier in the thread as I just joined and saw the concept render.
If he builds another water-tight reservoir that will fit inside the larger one, all he has to do is tap a 1/4" (or smaller if he'd like) barb into the back of the two reservoirs, screw a barb into each, and run 1/4" (or smaller) tube on each of those barbs.. then run the wire through that tube. Barbs and tube will keep water out, just as easily as they keep it in.
yes this is ho i imagine he will do it :) I considered building my SSD into my res and this was my method of execution as well - turns out the SSD laser cut acrylic would have pushed the cost up like $100 so I filed that plan away for another build with another custom res :)Quote:

I had planned to use modified b itspower Bits, modified with a copper/nickel plated extension (brazed/welded on and died to accommodate the tap) which once in the inner LCD chamber is muzzled by a female b itspower washer and top. The nickel coating on the pump coverings was what I would call frail to say the least... so I had all of them powder coated as well. (I should mention their are no post processing lighting effects going on in these photos or in the last batch I posted.... only lighting effects were from ... the lights).

Hi all, it's been a bit, and I'm posting to ask a question (apologies)... I've been working on the build A LOT, it's just that, for the most part, my next big bout of Images will be the grand grand finale where everything is finished (perhaps besides the final side panel design)! With that said, their are some opinions I would like to gather from community regarding side panel design on the MM Ascension... so over the next couple (days or more) until I finish, I'm going to post some panel designs I've come up with because I would really appreciate user feedback. I'll start with the very simplest of design, what you think?:

I guess "great" perhaps (nutty) minds think alike, for my light box which sends lights out trhough the fiber is currently mounted to a servo and will in the end be on a small stepper motor for greater resolution (more light options :D ... and yeah, honestly that Amphenol company gets away with murder: I mean I had to pay $557.76 for a 50 foot spool of 22 strand xpandolite! ... so definetly expensive for what it is... probably due to crummy patent situation..Quote:

There's more where this came from... Though I'll be buying more soon Nils... I've used nearly all my white just on fan cables and on top of that I'm considering redoing most of my fan sleeve to a different color (... I really, really, really like the gray :D Working with Nil's sleeving is something I have been doing A LOT of most enjoyably at other times and tediously namely due to a lack of planning. Lesson learned however... or so I hope.
The difficulties I"ve ran into are NOT sleeve related but simple ... err ... complicated logistical issues regarding the original design plan of my build. Complicated in respect to how one practically and astheticly implements (at least 8, goal of 10 MASSIVE radiators into an MM extended + pedestal + all the bells and whistles that go along with them.
So a few details: A) I am now 100% positive one of my GTX 285s is dead, dead, dead! This means time for new video cards... They were getting a little slow anyhow. :D This also means time for a new motherboard: Likely the EVGA x58 Classified 4-Way SLI board (using ATI 5xxx GPUs) OR my P6T7 which SHOULD SOON have its own water cooling solution courtesy of Duniek.
B) Next, the laws of physics not allowing me to fit my top mounted radiators and graphics cards in the same space/time coordinate simultaneously! So the most recent "task" I've done is disassemble this build almost entirely down to parts (still working on that) and I'm going to build it back up again but this time with an entirely different back panel which will need to support 10 expansion slots out the back and also I'm going to have some serious power supply repositioning (as in: they won't be going into the top case at all, but instead the bottom pedestal, with a beautiful (or that is the intent) waterfall of sleeve flowing down into the bottom... Oh yeah, and upgrading to dual Enermax (whatever is the most powerful version now) simply because I like them a lot more than my silverstone PSUs.
And I can't resist: One last glamor shot of the most unused sleeve I ever had at once... I truly feel the need to stock up as much as I can so that way when I'm living in my bomb shelter I can still do sleeve mods until the fallout goes away. :D

But, I've decided NEVER SURRENDER! ... especially not to inanimate objects of my own pseudo-creation (or assembly).. especially in the grand scheme of things.
