Excellent ! :up: I think you're right. The post code was reading 1-2 higher than software temp readings and changed a little faster. Just ran a quick cinebench run and it shot up maxing out at 35. I'm liking this board more and more. I just wish some of this info was out there, but I guess what would we all do if everything was handed to us on a platter? Sorry had to spam those smileys. I little bit of guidance is always helpful but every single computer is so different even if you have the exact components overclocks wont be cookie cutter clones. If I wanted a cookie cutter clone I would have bought a mac and paid twice as much for less power. :ROTF:
Well first tidbit......sems this board is similar to the gigabyte in certain instances.........seems it's easier to get a prime stable ram clock via fsb than 1600 divider........so 240 fsb 1333 divider.......
Nice to know. I haven't even touched my ram yet. I've got it up to 3.3ghz with multi only @ 1.325v in bios. No problems running prime for 2 hours so good enough for me at stock volts. 3.4ghz bugged on me so I know I'm gonna have to add some volts to go higher but I'm not worried because my load temps are still good 38C. Not bad for a cooler over 3 years old (Scythe Mine w/ 120mm Yate Loon med)

I think you'll be happy with it.......seems all the boards have tradeoffs.
Chip that does 3.7 in gigabyte with 1.375 needs 1.40 in this.......however the NB clocks for 2600 require less volts.......ram seems a tad easier to work with as well...

I encountered it when I used Team Xtreem Dark 1600 2x 2gb DDR3s.
I am now running on Corsair DHX 1600 2x 2gb DDR3s with no issues.
D3 refers to the first pair of ram slots (black). D5 refers to second pair of ram slots (blue).
I suggest exchanging your rams for an older or more common model.

Agree, board prob came with bios 1.0 which is flaky. If you don't have any extra ddr3 sticks try 1 stick in slot 2. Beta 136 is a nice bios and if you get stuck at vga try pci-e slot 2. I couldn't post on pci-e 1 either with bios 1.0.
Yah I had to stick one of my elpida budgets in to boot. Didn't want to hear my OCz's with shipped bios.

Oh yea, flipped the ram around in every slot that I could. Battery pulled, flashed CMOS, put the video in every slot.
You name it I tried it.....installed a 4pin instead of a 8pin.

Yah I tried diff slots, diff vidcards in diff slots......finally I stuck a diff stick in and it booted...
Looks like my xigamatek 1284EE is going to top out at 3720 with 1.4v......thought this thing was supposed to be a TRUE 120 killer, using the same exact model fan I use on my TRUE ;) Hitting a heatwall at 3840 with 1.45v.......
To be safe check out the test reports here for ram. Its quite ironic that to use newer rams, you would need to have older rams first to flash the bios. I guess this is what happens when they rush a board to release without testing current rams.Quote:

I think 4.5 24/7 stable phase is a little far fetched......4400 all benchable is realistic.....4300 prime maybe....5gig on DI is cake if you know how to tune the temps for DI correctly....5 gig benchable across the board is a pipe dream..........maybe PIfast and pi1m.........4800 benchable across the board is realistic.......

I'm using an antec True power 650 in one of my rigs......its an everyday rig though.....I would not expect the world out of it overclocking wise.....I get consistently higher clocks on all components with my cleaner power benching PSU's......
Sometimes you truly do get what you pay for, Luckily I don't ask to much out of my 24/7 rig.
OK due to a numerous amount of PM's I'm going to break this down as simple as possible in this thread since I'm on this board atm and refer people to this post......
Getting a stable OC as simple as possible............
First off I like to start with ram......I start with ram because if the IMC is not happy and ram is not happy your OC will suffer and you will not be happy.......
So requirement 1 for me personally is passing Prime blend at stock cpu speeds/voltages with ram oced.............2 hours minimum.............
The Idea here is to seperate each individual part of the OC into categories.......and use as little voltage for the OC as possible while maintaining stability and balancing heat.......

Now this is with me tossing the NB into the equasion and this is a Prime ( excuse the pun ) example Of why you run a mimimum of 2 hours.......Now personally this NB is useless performance wise even around 4gig cpu clocks.......but whatever doing it for the more is better crowd...

So I eventually decided that with the cpu cooler I was using 2800 was just not going to happen once I toss a core clock in........NB clocking is great but if it hinders your overall Cpu frequency then it defeats the purpose. Since I am looking for total system performance and 2800 actually hinder performance with ram clocks at 1600 I backed down to 2600........
Good idea to run this for 3 hours....it will fail rather easy on 512K ( memory/IMC related ) shortly after 2hour mark if your not 100% stable.

Bios settings used to do this........I kept this as simple as possible.......from here on out your on your own etc please don't ask for my bench settings as the answer will be NO.
As always your methods and voltages required will vary.......settings for ram will likely only work with OCZ animals.....
Ignore the CPU speed, supposed to be 3800....I think I screwed with bios, voltages are correct for 3800 prime stable.....

I suggest afudos, I had a bad checksum when I flashed from the shipped bios to the beta via the mobo bios flash utility.
You must use the /p /b /n /c command after the file though.....save you alot of headaches....

BTW guys to counter vdroop just raise CPU VDD to 1.3625......changes your ref vcore voltage......loaded prime stock volts now does not dip below 1.344 idle 1.352.....
Post up my bios settings later tonight wrapping up prime stable atm, and somehow I got to get to post office......and fed ex.....and test a bios out for the gigabyte 790FX-ud5p ddr II board for some of the guys.....so they have a working 955 bios.
Got my GD70 in, flashed to 1.2 BIOS. Put Phenom 2 810 on it so will be clocking via the bus. 4 gigs Mushkin 7-7-6-18 @ 1600.
I tired some OCing for awhile last night. Dropped to 1333 on memory and got stable @2.9 with 2 bumps on CPU volts. Could not get higher no matter what I tried, bumping volts on NB, mem or more CPU. HT was 2400. Did not take notes was just playing around. Going to get serious with it tonight and tomorrow and will take notes.
I know 1.65 memory would have been better and yes I am a noob. But trying to learn. Any tips would be appreciated.
Hoping to get a 955 next month and 810 will go back on DKA790GX.

What confuses me the most is the volts. There are the options in the BIOS but the numbers do not always match what I see in CPU-Z and AOD so not sure if I am increasing right ones. I am conservative so probably won't hurt anything but probably won't get too far either.

Now....2000 on 955+AM3 boards is not going to happen...1800 is almost impossible and 1700 is a struggle...so be clever and go for tight timings and if possible 1600MHZ or close to it.
I decided to throw in some Blade cas7...expensive memory based on Elpida Hyper IC....lets see how it does on the GD70 at 6-6-6-24 timings.

Tony: is the struggle for 900MHz memory OCZ-related (well, combo of MSI and OCZ) or AM3 design in general? I've been testing the GD70 with several OCZ kits as well and have the exact same issues: 850 is alright, but whenever I try to get near 900MHz, I fail. It seems that neither timings nor voltage really helps increasing the maximum memory frequency, so I'm leaning towards an am3 design issue rather than board-related.
However, there are definitly people hitting over 900MHz:

I'm not sure but I think this board shuts off the adjacent x8 slot when a x16 slot is used because the msi website says the board reconfigures from x16/0/x16/0 to x8/x8/x8/x8 when four cards are used.
well i'm still thinking of the board as i can use the first pciex1 slots because i'm using a very flat heatkiller waterblock :)
is it really THAT much better than the 790FXB or can i expect the same overclocks on cpu+ram from both boards?

So I get the new beta BIOS on.
Works in singal mode tested all fine, but installed in dual and the machine would reset reset.
So I flipped them the one that was in the first slot went in the 2ed slot.
It worked and Im up and running.
Ready to get them down to my 790i settings......

We pulled 1800+ on samsung IC's with an ES chip. I could never tune the sticks in @ 1800 when I swappped to public bios and 955.....best i've done is 856 on retail so far...so 1700+ can be done.....
I think part of it has to due with the ES chips not having 100% bios support, on the same token I noticed ram performance is a tad sloppy with them compared to retail.....I can't clock ram higher but get better results lower on retails.........

The FASTEST way of running these CPU's is 1333 mode and clock up HTT and ram with tight timings....who cares about 1800? i don't ;)

Try increasing NB volts ( 1.28-1.30 ) when attempting high ram clocks ( actual NB not cpu NB ) It may or may not help, might be board dependant....helps on the gigabyte.
Should be a safe range...I'm sure you well know that 790GX defaults at 1.30 NB volts...

The MSI 790FX-GD70 has a 2 digit debug LED on the PCB. When you upgrade to BIOS 1.35 beta (later 1.3 final) it can also display the temperature.
In fact, we can also show system temp or other part…But I think CPU Temp is most popular for OCer.

I know there is alot of settings but which ones are the best and which ones have the best reason to be messed with. I mean come on how many of you guy's have played with all the voltages already on this board in different combos? At 3.7 but any higher has problems with a 1600 ram note the 1333 ratio.
Did you prime stable at 1600 ram speeds for 3 hours or more before introducing any other part of the OC?......voltages needed are going to vary depending on cpu....I can toss another 955 is and I'm willing to bet those voltages do not work.......not to mention what ram are you using....and is it truly 100% stable.
I've had board less than a week...still exploring, can't complain since it benches 4 gig as all the other boards i've tested. Nb isn't quite up to speed but......I was using my crappy xigamatek....My True handles the heat load of NB clocks alot better.....
I've played with quite a bit of settings ( been on board for a solid 80 hours so far ) ;) I just tried to K.I.S.S. for you guys.
Prime stable setting I put a solid 24 hours into....and note this comes rather easy to me......you might have to take a tad longer...

Gains are minimal when using 1333 divider.....I don't think its a design flaw, I think the cpu likes the lower divider and HTT increase better. Noted on 2 boards thus far.
Macro-MSI - thank you for sharing the read points.. i did notice the cpu and cpunb by the LED.. but had no idea there were more read points under the heat pipe :)

Chew no I only used in-place for 24 and then another 12 at 2 different settings. Pretty sure these gskill are 2x1gb d9's have another set as well so don't think it's memory cpu maybe but just don't fell like it. Wide range on v's doesn't help or hurt cpu speed at 3700 with 1.4625 for 2 day then 1.43 now in bios.
I run blend religiously with AMD, the IMC makes it almost a requirement......1024K is the first test and will spit out an error quickly if the IMC or memory is pissed, it will toss an error on 640k/512k/448k around 2-3 hours if your almost stable.
This saves alot of time....
If your failing on 8k/10k/12k/20k etc etc.....its either heat or cpu voltage related.....if voltage you will usually just crash. If it errors its usually heat..
Studying each bench and Knowing why it fails makes diagnosis alot easier....this is why I stress test each part of the OC individually.
Because I know why a bench fails at a particular point I can toss everthing together in one shot now.......You need to learn why it's failing though thus the 3 step approach, you will get a better understading and grasp on it this way.
