elitist? wow quite the insult.. ive shared everything with you guys.. every step of the way.. mars/blackops/dfi ut p35 and now dq6 results.. some of you only joined the thread from page 6/7/8 but go back for more info.. batch aswell.. ive shared my specs/pic its all there.. should figure out.. im not doing anything new
and if someones wondering about any mobo vmods/cap mods.. the boards still virgin just like the day it got made
im not gonna state my voltage settings cause someone will blow up their rig.. whats the fun in that
patience and perseverance.. no sweat no oc
:nono:
I have but one last thing to say on this:
":chicken:"
:hrhr:
E0 CPUs rock. I don't have a Q9650, but I do have two X5450 Xeons ;)
About the same really, only they are S771 instead of 775 and run on a Dual socket mobo :D
Still testing, but seems they can do around 3900Mhz at 1,17V loaded. Need to do a Vcore pinmod for more..
NBF - thanks :)
would that satisfy you? right..
4.5/4.7/4.8GHz

vcore
vtt
vpll

vdimm
v12 ;) - no 5ghz without it
all have to be adjusted.. at least thats what i adjust on the dq6
and depending on your cpu/mobo/ram/psu/etc.. gtl and other voltages
what values? well thats the fun @ ocing :) you guys gotta find that on your own :D
Actually I have been following this thread the entire way since I have a QX9650 and there are no dedicated over clocking threads for them. You end up grabbing info from various threads. What gets me is that when the QX9650 came out they could do 4.5Ghz with little effort on air and so far this chip is challenging me. Since I have a Blitz MB, I have a lot of adjustments that can be done, plus I w/c so temps are not an issue. What I have been trying to figure out is if it is a limitation of the MB, chip or me that has prevented me from getting higher, this is why I wanted to know your voltage settings. If I am no where close to yours, then I know it is me. If I am higher, than I know it is either the chip or the MB. I have thought about getting a new MB with a P45 chipset, but I am not sure if that will be a waste of time. I may just buy one local and try it out and if doesn't give better results then I can just return it. Unfortunetely, I don't have as much time to dedicate to it as I use to, so coughing up the voltages would cut down on the trial and error time I would have to do, :D. Yes, I know, it's sort of cheating, but how about we take pity on this new dad and show him the light, ;).
Anyway, you are getting some great results and I look forward to see what your limit ends up being. Until then I will keep trying different settings and maybe a different MB.
Thanks,
Utnorris
Sometimes it takes the perfect match; I think you just found it; especially since you weren't so lucky with the other boards. PLUS, I don't know if anyone has the balls to run vtt at 1.9v+
OT: Gratz for the new baby, Utnorris
Utnorris - oc pity on new dad.. congratz! alright ill work with you..
whats your current voltages including the 12v line @ 4ghz ?

happy?
Your overclock is stunning Napalm, your attitude is not.
look.. Gautam and everyone reading this.. my attitude is not same towards everyone.. reason why i respond the way i respond to certain individuals.. but your right i should get new brakes current ones weren thin.. got to get ready for the next round of ocing
sorry everyone
Thanks all for the "Congratulations". Although, I am not entirely sure what day it is until I check the calendar or something, lack of sleep and all. For being such a bundle of joy he sure is a handful, :D. But seriously, thank you and NapalmV5, thanks in advance.
Utnorris
Congrats NapalmV5 and thanks for sharing your results.
I agree with you, the fun of ocing is spending hours and hours of tweaking by one's own. Anyway, take care of that P45 you got by you :)
NapalmV5's numbers are perfect achievable on some cold water. What is very strange, is that he claims he is doing it on air.
Anyway, that is one thing we will probably never know :) I have the right to doubt it if I want to...
Most of the fake posts are from kids with low posts. Napalm has been around here for at least 6 years. While i may have sounded a little skeptical at first, and a lot of others are/were, His results were rather outstanding. This not the first time though we have seen outstanding results here at XS. After seeing his setup, and his results, he obviously knows wtf hes doing. Look at his setup, he's not using on board anything. Areca for drives, pci nic, excellent air cooling and none of his fans are even hooked up to the motherboard. That setup in my opinion could do what he claims its doing. He may not want to share all of his secrets, but nothing says he has to. If it were me, i'd want to show you guys everything. Some people don't. That doesn't make them a fake.
Keep up the good work Napalm! You've encouraged me to pick up 1 or 2 of these 9650s. I know this Striker isnt the best for FSB, but i'll do what i can.
I'm not a skeptic, but I'll have to see another crack at P95 without anomalies to be convinced he's stable. The PLL and VTT are obviously too high, and that could be the problem; or the board may be giving up on him already. It's one of the two. I have to say once again though, that, whatever the case may be, this is a really impressive score. If Napalm hadn't mentioned all air cooling, I would have said he was chilled water cooling both chipsets. Which begs the question: What is your ambient temp. Napalm?
all right !!!
i let the CPU idle all day, while i was @ work = about 12 hrs idleing
I now get movement on all cores .
the # 3 core still will not go below 33C but it is now in line with the rest of the cores in temp under load with Prime 95 BLEND

the difference from air to vapoLS on this system is as you guys can see very small.. but its the perfect system for air..
higher clocks demand higher mobo voltages higher vtt and better ram.. till i find the better.. this is it! its been fun :)
holy crap
NapalmV5
Holy ****! Please, sell me your chip!
Yeah It'a keeper ! gonna throw that CPU on a Rampage Formula board that is all watered up with a Vtek V2 & EK mosfits , s/b & a modded DD MPC n/b & see if i can push it up to Napalm's edge ! then do the same with my other R/F board this week end
if you can keep that X48 chipset cool it will keep stable at high clocks
Hey guys, dunno if this is the right thread or not. Just got my first ever quad, a QX9650 (sweet deal of £300).
No idea if this is any good but I was impressed.

Obviously I doubt it's prime stable yet but who knows. So far runs fine. Think I need to tweak the NB voltages though... I'll fully test it out later today :)

i finally got my head into gear and played more with the gtl voltages (110,105,85, i finally got to 4ghz. i ran linpak 20 times, prime over and over, 3dmark and played crysis... i still need to do more tweeking to the ram.

Nice going Napalm :) you make my Qx blush big time :) but I also bought it to have the higher multi so to not go as high as 500FSB daily... I limited myself at 1.6 Pll and FSB VTT at 1.45 for the 500FSB runs... never tried more as my temps were already over 10°C hotter than with 10 x 450FSB...
Might pick one of these babies if I can sell my E8400...
thank you guys..
my vpll on dq6 = 1.58 @ 4.9ghz on air :)
no wonder you guys have such low clocks gotta push that vtt harder if you guys want higher clocks.. who comes up with all these myths? pll/vtt/vcore/on and on..
Me.
well then you guys have cadaveca to thank for your low ocs :D lol
Maybe, maybe, but who here has killed Core2 cpu?:stick:
ME...but maybe it's a bad board, like XBX1 and XBX2 that kill mems...
Intel should thank me if such were true, but I do not think I am the only one to kill Core2.
definitely bad board.. my blackops kills video cards :)
and you guys gotta adjust the 12v line @ psu for high clocks.. how much? whatever you guys are comfortable with but you gotta push that hard aswell :)
LoL. As if I have that much effect. I think a zillion would be a bit low, anyway...:ROTF:
You cannot raise a single system voltage, and expect results. All must go up. Voltages must retain ratios within respect of each other, so adjusting base voltage so as to increase the window of that threshold is pretty basic IMHO. Same as GTL...you adjust to maintain the window.
and yet you myth everyone @ 1.45vtt.. :)
So basically, time to mod our PSU?
Well my chip will be here Monday from the egg. What warehouse did your ship from Napalm? I'm hoping for one of those "B" chips..... I haven't seen any 780i's on this thread. I hope it works out!
just did a 3DMarK06 run @ 4 GHZ = 22666

thanks.. fun indeed.. will try to get the max out of it with care :)
thanks.. if it dont oc well on one mobo try another.. i went thru several
like i said you got a good one
bring it on! :) its getting lonely here @ 4.9..
push it harder.. good mobo/ram/psu will help
good luck
This was very easy on the Rampage Formula
New board, better oc. :)

Primed 22 minutes at 4400MHz 1.42V, but then i got an error. Imho my all day settings will be somewhere around 4200MHz, thats still nice for a quad!
Vista 64Bit is really much more sensitive then normal XP 32Bit.. Can't boot into Vista with the settings i benched 16M on XP.

I thought that i would join in with my q9650 and maximus II P45 @ 4231
Hey guys. I have the opportunity to purchase a QX9650 Retail and all the info I have now is that it is a retail release chip (L733). I dont know if it is an "A" or a "B" batch but the seller has SS of it doing 4Ghz with 1.36v on a 780i.
Really trying to figure out if I should pull the trigger. I have a LC loop for the CPU that consists of DDC-2/Petra topped, EK Supreme, Feser 120.2, EK multi-option 250, 2xSanyo Denki 120x38mm San Aces'. Should have pretty good sucess cooling the chip.
Some quick thoughts would really help me out ;)
Damon
I've had two QX9650's in the past year and had trouble getting them to 4GHz 24/7 on a pretty decent water setup with any vcore south of 1.41v (Could be my lack of skills at OC)
But these Q9650's seem to be hitting 4GHz more often than not at lower vcore. Plus, they're a newer stepping and cheaper.
Not quite as good for benching though.
My vote goes to the Q9650, no X :D
L822B363 Just received today from newegg new jersey warehouse. My striker died yesterday so i'll be ordering a board in the next hour to be here tomorrow. Either Asus Rampage Formula, Maximuss II Formula or P5Q deluxe. Anybody have any suggestions for a good board?
Turtle, L733 is a very early QX, before QX9770 bins, so it's a toss up. My L739 is a keeper...
But early QX chips seem FSB limited. Mine maxes out at about 490(which seems pretty good), but I have now seen 6 E0 quads @ 500FSB++. SO it depends on what you want...high FSB, or high clocks...
Nigzo, I'd hit up the Maximus 2 if you'll jsut go single-card vga.
I decided to go with the Maximus II formula. Overnight from the egg. Gonna play with a MSI p7n diamond untill the max gets here. It surprised me, 4625 vs 4500mhz on the striker (E8600) Maybe it'll clock the quad well.
Arggg. Decisions, decisions. I know this guy alittle (from a BST forum) and he always has procs for sale, and he has allot of heatware refs that are positive. I trust his results that he has stated to me. He says highest he tried was 4.5Ghz and that 3.8 was easy, 4Ghz is the sweet spot and 4.2Ghz was doable but hot. He also dropped price a tad, so I think I am gonna go for it and see what gives.
Sorry i should have been more clear on what I had posted ! Not the Extreme CPU's it's the Asus Extreme Boards & the Quads
NO! yer fine with that board it's the Asus Extreme DDR3 boards that have issues with the QX9650
the Guys at Asus Independant Forum all got the Rampage Extreme for the Fall Forum Wars & all have had problems big time in O/C'in those boards with the quads
the Rampage Formula X48 boards are great as are the Maximus boards
the issue is with the NEW Extreme R/F & Extreme Maximus seems the Quads don't like the 16 phase power on those boards & bios are still way Too young , that's the issue & they can't seem to get the boards stable with Quads
NOW below is all I M H O >>>
dam glad it didn't get one as i was thinkin' of it but with the NeHam just around the corner I didn't want to drop cash for a new board & DDR3...
seems to me that they(the extreme boards) were relaesed just too late for the market as Asus will be concentrated on theNeham 's , X58 boards more than the Extreme boards when it comes to bios & support
at the moment my Q9650 is humming along 24/7 at 4GHz on my X48 Rampage formula LOVE this CPU yEE hAA !!! & i ani't even really pushed it yet .............Gonna let it burn-in awhile 1st ...
P5E3 Premium is very good for quads too!
Heard about the same problems with 16-phase on rampage extreme with quad-oc.
I think I am going to hold off. I am going to get Charles_H to fab me some stuff to finnish off my TJ-07 build then see how Yorkfield prices are affected by Nahelem, then possibly pull the trigger. I would love to get a cherry proc that is being ditched for a new arch :p:
before u do that check this thread out !
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=202014
as shown some quads are PDN's & they will go up in price when gone like the QX's & the Q9650 as the really good chips will be more valuable when gone !!
only the Quad dogs ( Q9450's & the like ) will go down & the q6600 plus the core 2 's e serises also .. I suggest getting the Q9650 while you can , as it seeems to be the best bang for yer buck Right Now !
4-4.2ghz? come on guys! thats peanuts for these q9650.. if you think my q9650 is a special one it aint
heres the voltage order you guys should focus on without any gtl adjusting:
1 vtt/v12 - most important: high maintenance
2 vnb/vdimm - these have to work in harmony: they make great sex.. they make you high clocks
3 vcore - raise it when you feel/think your system just gave up on you
4 vpll/vi/o - low maintenance though makes it or brakes it @ high clocks
5 v5/v3.3 - bother only if you have to
if you do adjust gtl.. this order may be different for you
however you oc.. all these voltages have to be raised accordingly/sufficiently for your hardware.. how much depends on your cooling
good luck!
So what range should we look for on the vtt when clocking at 4+GHZ? I just dropped my q9650 into my rampage formula. Right now I am priming at 4.02GHz. But to get there set the vcore to 1.3625v(reading @ 1.31v) because of the vdroop on this things. When putting it under prime load, the vcore drops to 1.26v-1.27v. I do have the LLC set to auto. I might try enabling vdroop control and see what kind of vcore i need. I think I have my vtt set to 1.32v.
I've had this CPU 2 days and this motherboard (Maximus II Formula P45) came in today. I'm new to intel chip sets so most settings are on auto. I'm pleased with what i have so far. This isnt tested long term for stability but i've had no issues at all so far. I went ahead ant posted in hopes for some suggestions. Vcore can probably go lower, this was just my starting point. I'm down for any criticism if i set something stupid in bios. The nforces ive been OC'ing for the past 3 years are a lot different.
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/4...tureoo8.th.jpghttp://img391.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif
Really nice Q9650 you have there!
Same batch as napalms?
I think one addition to this killer combo is the p45+q9650. x38 is giving me no love (except for 4.1ghz):ROTF:
Napalm, adjusting the v12 is a hardware mod, right?
Normally yes, but some psu have varibale resistors inside. With this you can manually adjust the rails. But don't know how napalm realised that.
On the other side, i can't see any advantage in rising the rails over the demanding 12.00V. Maybe if you use a poor psu, which drops way under maybe 11.90V it could possibly a advantage. But to be honest i don't think anyone here in the thread will not have have a state of the art psu. ;)
Played a lot with adjustable rails in the past, but if some component is holding back the oc i couldn't get them higher with raising the rails. It was just to get the placebo effect of higher and "stable" voltages. :D But i always used some of the best psu you can get at that time.
I know my PSU has a switch that changes from various 12v rails to a single.
I suppose I should have it on the single for better OC results?
Possibly it could have a positive effect. But don't think so. Your silverstone have 2 x 17A for supporting the cpu. 34A x 12V = 408W. My Q9650 need about 9.8A with 4000MHz 1.27V while priming.
PS.: But i would always prefer single rail mode. ;)
single rail period !
bingo! yatzeee! :)
ill say it once again.. best shot at high quad fsb/clocks = P35/P45 especially P45 but even some great P35 mobos could reach P45 clocks
FYI and others .. as far as max oc goes i gained just 100mhz from air to phase @ max vtt/vnb
loads are different 4.5ghz to 4.9ghz
correct.. adjusting v12 means adjusting v12 pot @ psu
i would advise against such mod.. have it done by someone experienced
thats the mystery? maybe cause ive been doing for quite some time.. dont believe me? go ask the other more trusted better known ocers about psu..
the most important part at hard ocing is the psu
I cant seem to get my Q9650 over 515 x 9, P45 Gigabyte board...
1. That part you wrote in bold was pertained to the modded +12V rail on your psu.
2. Do you know how all that voltages act togehter with oc? A example: Your psu have 12.00V and cpu needs 150W, then you have a amperage of 12.5A. If you have your rail pushed to 12.50V you will have a amperage of 12.0A. Now tell me, which one of this is better?
3. If you want a good psu for oc, you do not need higher voltages on rails then the needed 12.0V for example. You need stable voltages, no flucation, good regulation, good filtering, close to no ripple and all that stuff..
But let's stop now. If u just can "lough" about what i write, i don't want to "discuss" with you. Never said anything bad about your results.. just doubting on your high rails theorie. ;)
lets do it right here.. not @ pm.. for everyone to see
post your voltages/settings.. please
also what kind of cooling/psu/mobo/ram
dont take it so serious.. sounded funny ;)
no theories no bs its a fact and i didnt come up with it on my own
how do you think you see so many extreme clocks posted by great overclockers? @ v12.0 straight? never
NapalmV5,
You never seize to amaze me. You could have just posted your numbers and left it at that, but instead you are willing to give some of us light weights help, so kudos to you for spreading the knowledge. Hopefully, when I get my Maximus up and running I can come back here and post some credible numbers.
Again, thank you for all the help, both private and public.
Utnorris
So as I have never heard about this with any PSU reviews or users posting... what PSU's have VR's to adjust the rails, I'm willing to open up my PSU as long as I know what I'm looking for and roughly where it should be....
just checked my main rig and the HX1000 has the 12v rail down at 11.71v :( (via Everest 4.6)
Just measure your +12V with a DMM. HX1000 would never just give you 11.70V with that kind of load your system have. If so, it is defect.
Please do not even think of modding your HX1000.. It will hold every overclock on your cpu without any modding. Believe me. ;)
GA EP45 DS4P, 2GB Kingston 8500, PC Power & Cooling 750w, Dtek Fuzion, Laing D5 Basic, Swiftech MCR220-QP, 2-3870x2 stock cooling.
Bios is all auto settings except vcore set to 1.575 in bios and 2.2v on RAM 5-5-5-15 rest on auto, 2.00D/400/Standard, had to add a couple increments of voltage to ICH core and I/O to post. I can bench at 4599 but no higher...
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5...0063ho2.th.jpg
Well, if I get someone "more experienced" than me to do it, I'll never learn.
But if someone more experienced showed me how, I might be able to do it. :D
Anyway, I'm not sure how much PSU modding I want to do. Mine has no warranty anyway, so I guess it doesn't make much difference :D
This is what easytune reports...
road-runner
that easytune ss is easier to work with.. thanks
before you go any further what is your v12 @ those clocks/settings?
pll is too high
leave vcore as is
vdimm/vnb are way way low  which is a good thing.. more headroom
set vtt @ ~1.8-1.9
set vpll/vi/o @ same voltage 1.6-1.7
set vdimm @ ~2.5-2.8
set vnb @ ~1.7 all the way @ max if you have to
set cpu clock drive @ 1000mV
set pcie clock drive @ 1000mV
523x9 easy
534x9 doable
545x9 within your grasp @ max vtt/vnb
since im waiting on new ram im back on air so ill oc with you
Voltage at 4ghz according to easytune is 11.921 run it 4Ghz 1.45 vcore setting 1.328 real under load. That was just trying to run a quick bench. I am not sure whick setting is vtt vpll/vi/o as I was just used to the P35 boards where all you had to set was mch and fsb. This is what it has been running 24/7 cruching...
