The hole project KICKS ASS!
Thanks for the comments guys. :)
I'm using a Nikon D70 with a Nikkor 20-35mm f2.8 zoom lens I just got a couple weeks ago off Craigslist for $450. It's a nice lens but it's no 28mm f1.4 like the one I borrowed from Sinison to do the original murderbox pics. That thing is amazing! He offered to lend it to me again but I'll manage with the 20-35mm. Besides, the 28mm f1.4 is pretty much irreplaceable. If something happened to it I'd owe him my soul.
For the settings I shoot from wide open - f2.8 to f8 - depending. Speed is always above 60th to help with sharpness - since I shoot hand held. I use natural light from the windows and white reflector cards to bounce light. Pretty simple setup really. :)
For the fanta murderbox I'm using UV cold cathodes - 2x 12" and 1x 4"
It's "solar black" powder coat.
The orange is great in some light - not so great in others. Like I said before; the orange against white looks wicked.
Other colors I use are red, green, blue and now black/dark purple.
steal away. :)
As I recall, that's a 1" glue lined heatshrink - 3:1
As GameGuru states, I think I already answered a bunch of these. :)
I use Techflex sleeving - PET to be exact. Mostly 1/4".
For heat shrink I use mostly 1/2" - glue lined - 3:1. For the ATX cables I believe it's about 3/8".
I get my parts from all over - I always look for the best quality/price. I'm also big on vendor loyalty. When I find places with good ppl I stick with them.
My secret for eliminating wires showing through the sleeving is one I'm going to hang onto for the time being. I will say that it involves a goat, a chicken, and lots of bacon fat. There... I've pretty much given it away! :p:
I used a step drill bit to make a 1" hole. I loves my step drill bit. It cuts sooo clean. No deburring needed. :)
Project Update: I'm afraid no build pics today so here are a couple snaps of my fish "Wimpy".
http://murderbox.com/uploads/Wimpy_107d.jpg
http://murderbox.com/uploads/Wimpy109e.jpg
He's a 10" South American Severum and like the fanta murderbox, he too is orange and water cooled. He likes crickets, shrimp, krill, worms, lettuce, zucchini, peas, and assorted pellets. Wimpy is just over 3 years old and will hopefully live another 10 years. Wimpy enjoys reading and chillin' to the classics.
and no, he's not an "eating" fish. ;)
The Acrylic top grill is coming along nicely - pics very soon.
Sometimes i wish i had an fish. My two budgies are loud, messy but so lovely :D
Looking forward to a update soon :)
could you link me to this bit?
 :ROTF:
I don't think my nerves could handle birds. I need quiet pets. :)
http://www.lenoxtools.com/enUS/Produ...RILL_BITS.html
I have the VB2 model. 1/2" to 1" in 9 steps.
lol does he like eating you neon tetras? and how big does your tank need to be for him O_O??
Wow nice fish Charles! It's beautiful:)
Loving the project too, looking forward to the next update.
Lovely project mate! And lovely fish, few of my angel fish are orange as well :)
About the 25mm holes ... Charles did indeed use the step-drill but now he will get this new tool from me that is still a prototype: click0r
Bloomin nice
I never understood the name "Murder Box". What does it stand for?
Imagine you are on a date with a woman and she asks "What do you do", and you answer "I make murder boxes". I bet she thinks she will end up in a coffin on the end of the date lol :D
Committing a murder for this box! I think...
Your wife will "murder" you if she found out how you spent on a computer!
Thanks Guys. :)
Once Wimpy discovered that the tetras were edible, the rest had to be evacuated to another tank. Not that Wimpy is much of a predator but the tetras were captive prey and over time, he would have eventually cornered and consumed another one.
His tank is 75 gallons - 4 feet.
:ROTF:
It's actually easy. I tip the system on its face and attach a fitting with a long hose to the fillport. Then I tip the machine back and drain or fill.
I'm married so no worries there. :)
In a nutshell, the idea behind the name murderbox is twofold; one, it's a twist on the pop culture use of the word "killer". Two, I got the idea watching The Venture Brothers. There was a character named Dr Henry Killinger and he carried a "magic murder bag". The abstract yet powerful words "murder bag" really connected with me. The word murderbox felt like a natural fit for what I was doing. Plus the .com was available. My wife hated it at first but agreed to *allow* me to use it temporarily - till I thought of something else. She claims it eventually grew on her and said I didn't have to change it. My plan all along. ;)
i will agree that the name murderbox is very powerful.
i stuck with me ever since the first time i saw it. now
after i showed my girlfriend the murderbox, she refers
to all TJ07s as them... lol
I'm still confused. I drew some stuff on your picture to further explain my confusion =D
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...C_3330copy.jpg
So, you bleed it like this yes? Well then you're pouring liquid into the outlet of your pump. Can't see how this will fill properly without having the pump run dry for a small amount of time.
btw LOL @ David Blaine! Or well; the internet spoofs on him.. Hilarious!
Hahahah. Wow, it shot through a cardboard box! Woah, I am in awe! In AWE.
Now I understand how it's done. The gravity does most of the work when bleeding the loop and rapid on-off cycling of the pump forces the bubbles out of the radiator and waterblocks.
damn bro you have a very VERY sexy computer!
Water flows down both tubes off the waterblock and will fill the radiator, and up to the inlet.
FYI your CPU block is upside down, and d-tek explicitly says in the instructions not to mount your block like that...
*waits with baited breath* those plated EK blocks look lush. :D
The outlet is just supposed to be higher than the inlet only to avoid trapped air bubbles. This would make the D-tek nameplate on the block right-side-up.
Technically, it is upside down, but given the loop is bled correctly/fully, it should not matter. I see nothing wrong with it given how clean the loop is
Bottom line work of art, awesome dude.
Thanks for the comments Guys. :)
Project Update: The top Acrylic grill is done but I was hoping to get decent lighting to get pics that would do it justice. Sadly its overcast but rather than wait any longer, I figured I'd at least give you an idea of how it turned out.
I'm very happy with the result - it's a simple design but it performs the required function of allowing warm air to escape, in addition to permitting view down into the case. The added bonus is by allowing light to enter the case from the top, the innards have even more contrast and look wicked. Its a two piece kit; I designed a flange that gets attached to the inside of the case in the place of the black grill. Once the flange is in place, the grill simply drops in. It fits perfectly into the cutout. The idea of not fixing the grill to the flange was twofold - One; it allows you to remove the grill for cleaning - Two; it allows you to remove the grill to replace it with another design - using the same flange. I'll offer the murderMod TJ07 005 top grill to anyone who may want one (but please don't contact me about it yet). I should have inventory by the 1st week of July. News and info will be on my website. I hope this statement doesn't breach any forum rules and if it does, Mods please accept my apology and kindly edit as you see fit.
Ok, moving on - I started with the normal extruded Acrylic but wasn't happy with the edges. I then switched to cast Acrylic which is slightly more expensive, but the edges are much cleaner looking. I guess that's enough yacking and time to get with the posting of pics - I'm afraid to say that these pics don't do the thing justice. I promise to get better shots when the lighting improves. I just didn't want to make you guys wait any longer.

In other news - FC's build has come to a grinding halt because we're missing the IO shield. I know... I know... :ROTF:
Fried Chicken is looking feverishly for it but alas it may be a goner. If that's the case, we're in trouble. At some point I may need to reach out to you guys in the hopes that one of you have a spare IO shield for an eVGA 680i mobo. The reward will be eternal gratitude - and cash. :)
Damn that looks amazing. Most impressive I must say, fits nicely with everything else you've done. Keep us posted when it might be available.
Looks crazy sexy:D
WOW, that is amazing
By far, that is the best grill I've ever seen. Period.
That's F*cking gorgeous !!! I'm glad to have contribuate to that grill.
This thread is really a case modding pr0n.
Ps : I'm first for the murderMod TJ07 005 top grill ^^
OMG, I am so closing this pr0n thread!
Love your work, charles_h. :D
It's brilliant Charles. I am still looking for a I/O shield.. I am trying to steal one from my brother-in-law.. but he is resisting!
:D
man this is so beautifull!
OMG thats looks better than i had thought (not saying it wasnt going to be good) but wow... i may want one
great work charles. You guys get that I/O Shield ASAP. :D
Looks damn hot!
For the IO Shield. Why donīt you ask directly at EVGA?
Lost mine too and had 2 days later a new one :)
wow that grill is so sexy!!!
Incredible work bro!
It's amazing!!
try contacting evga, foxconn or bfg cause they're all the same 680i boards. foxconn makes them and evga and bfg rebadge their names on em. i think xfx may use the same board to but i dont remember, haven't looked at that series since last summer when i built a pc for a friend and used one.
looks good. the actual piece and pics look almost the same as the modled pics.
i was up at Lowes yesterday and stopped by the electronics section and found those cable clamps, they were made by a different company but i got them and they work great. great idea Charles
only can say: Oh my god;), you have a pm!;)
The work is bautiful! good job!
Regards!
Hey, I don't know if it's any help, but I have an extra I/O shield for my XFX 680i LT that I'm not using. It's leftover from my RMA, I forgot to send it back, lol. If it'll work, you can have it for free. Call it for the good of the cause.... the murderMod cause!!!
just curious how you mounted that grill Charles

oppss missed that one. thanks Friedchicken!
10 please :)
lyl he does have a problem bleeding that loop fully, with his scenario of tipping the case on the front, air will get trapped in his fuzion block...
anyway this is still not quite finished, so he can still invert the cpu block to the proper orientation...
nice grill Charles. a work to be envied...
that grill looks amazing..i love how it blends in with the case...outstanding work there^^
i do have to say that it looks painfully restrictive to airflow though
Looks top-spec. This is what characterises top notch casemodding.
i totally gotta steal some ideas here :D
Thanks for the comments Guys. :)
Absolutely. Right after Fried Chicklettes and Steffen. :D
You must tell him RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. Or just take it while he sleeps. ;)
Cheers Steffen, I sent them an email.
Done and glad to hear you found those clamps.
Cheers hiyah, very kind of you. The varmint I need has two Ethernet ports - I don't recall if the LT version has one or two...
Sweet! I'm pleased to announce that bulk orders of 10 or more come with a handsome set of Acrylic steak knives. ;)
hmmm... It only takes about 10 mins to fill and fully bleed all the air. How much faster would it be to invert the block do you think? I always thought the in and out designations on the block were more for flow design than trapped air.
It's actually pretty good. There's a considerable amount of airflow. Obviously without a fan, this wouldn't be adequate for an air cooled config.
Project Update: I figured I'd mount the EK blocks to the cards in hopes that that would help summon an IO shield of build finishing. This is my 1st experience with EK products so I followed the instructions carefully. After joining the card to the block, I noticed there was a gap as a result of the power regulator block not being flush with the water block. I tried reseating it a few times with no luck. I then switched to an other ALU power reg block and it had the same problem. It appears the Nickel block is the culprit. The other Nickel block is fine. Shame the problem isn't the ALU block as I have two of those from the original copper blocks.
http://murderbox.com/uploads/DSC_3668.jpg
Golly! Almost no ram contact.
http://murderbox.com/uploads/DSC_3677.jpg
There's the problem - the ALU block is on an angle - yikes!
Bottomline: the IO Shield is no longer holding up the build...
Too bad, I think Ek blocks quality control is not good as in the beginning, not the first time someone as a problem with them.
Noooooo.....
The solution for this problem is to take the block to a local machine shop to determine exactly where is the problem and correct in on a CNC.
how's that a solution? Then he has to pay someone else to fix something that should have been right in the first place? I would take it back.
Maybe a shim would be a better solution considering the angle.
Stunning build!!!!
I too would love to get my hands on one of those top plates - early July you say they will be available??
I must admit that everytime I read this thread I hear homer's voice....
"I gave my love a chicken it had no bones....mmmm chicken"
:ROTF:
I swear I've put on 10 pounds since starting this build. Every time I check the thread and see Fried Chicken, I'm immediately hungry. ;)
Cheers Dangals. :)
Project Update: No need for milling, cedar shims or latex body suits (ok, where the hell did that come from). When you buy from a place like Petra's, you get service baby...
That's what I'm talkin'bout! :yepp:Quote:
Charles,
I am sad to hear that one of the blocks appears to be defective (maybe the threads were tapped crooked). I do have one left so if you want to send the defective one back to me, I can cross-ship our last one to you. Charles, what do you think?
Quoc Ngo
Petra's Tech Shop (www.shopPTS.com)
no, thank you charles your work is inspirational and when it comes time for me to get either a 4870 or 4870x2 and add that into my loop I am sure to take a few things from your builds and try to imitate them.....
One thing is for sure - I am definately adding the top panel that you made please let me know as soon as they are available!!!
gotta hate all the lil problems that appear when building pc's like this.
I been through my fair share....
hopefully problem can be rectified asap.
Because i can't wait to see this finished!!!!
droooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
I really hate you... I now HAVE to get a TJ07 and mod it as well
J/K. You did an outstanding job. I am going to get myself a TJ07, though :D
no kidding, these TJ07 mods are growing on me. I thought that the v2000 was like the be all end all cae, but Mr Charles has shown me the light. . . .
at least the tj07 hasn't been discontinued or turned into crap like the v2010. i'd love to get a v2000 but dont have money and by the time i do it will be impossible to find. half the reason i like the v2000 is bc of the inverted board and bc of that i dont care for the new ones with the regular mounting board.
Its looks perfect! Great work on everything!
I would hope and be glad if you could take some picture of it with a standard position? Without those macroshots or the fancy angles?
Thanks
Systemcepe
Cheers Guys. :)
All being well, I should have the replacement gpu block by Wednesday and hopefully, the IO Shield as well.
I've been looking at Fried Chicken's build these past days thinking what else can be done. I've come up with an idea I'm pretty stoked about. It'll totally fit with the design and tie everything together, composition wise. I'm afraid I'm not going to tip my cards just yet - instead I'm going to be a big jerk and make you guys wait till the end of the week when if all goes as planned, pics will be done.
and yes there will be full body shots - not just arty farty ones. :yepp:
I hate to keep my idea under wraps guys, especially since you're all so awesome and amazingly supportive.
My hope is that the wait will be worth it. :)
Thanks to you for showing this amazing build
Great job on this build... Very very clean I like it....
Here's what the D-tek manual says
But like i said, if you have bled the system correctly, I dont see why there would be a problem. Im going to go out on a limb and say Charles has enough WC experience to fully bleed a loop :yepp: And I dont see the orientation effecting the flow very much at all either.Quote:
Apply high quality thermal paste such as Artic Silver to the CPU core. Place the water-block down until it rests atop the CPU. Make sure
the waterblock orientation is that in which the outlet barb is placed at the top when the computer is upright to help bleed any air bubbles
in the block when filling. This also positions the “D-TEK” label upright.
Your orientation gives the cleanest look, and i think you should go with that ;) It's a murderbox, amirite
Sorry to hear your troubles with the EK block, Charles... At least your project snag is better than a missing I/O shield!
Thanks guys. :)
Cheers lyl, good to know. In this case, I might flip the block around. I think the hoses will look neater with the pump going to the "out" barb. This would put the block at a 90 degree angle in relation to the D-Tek logo. If orientation is just about bleeding issues then no worries, It's good exercise wrastling a fully loaded TJ07 around. :)
Project Update: Nickel block en route. IO Shield still MIA.
RIP George Carlin.
One call to EVGA, and they are shipping one out to me at no charge. I've had several dealings with their RMA and support staff and have had great experiences with them every time.
I highly recommend their products for the warantee/support alone.
Project Update: I picked up the replacement EK block earlier in the day (thanks to Quoc@ Petra's) and FC brought the IO Shield to me Thursday aft. Threw some paint on the IO Shield and installed the new block on the video card. Decided I'd crank away till late into the night since I was stoked to finally get the last pieces. Put the loop together but will wait till the AM to fill. Still have to button up a few things but I thought I'd take a quick night shot before packing it in, to give you guys a taste.
http://murderbox.com/uploads/DSC_3734.jpg
Many more to follow. :)
Yeah what the sh*t is this? Sleeved tube´s :D
It looks damn awesome!
I agree - that looks amazing!!!
FriedChicken - you must feel like one of the luckiest guys on the planet at this point in time!!
Cheers Charles!
Always impressed by your work.
I guess you are the founder of sleevemania ;)
Very impressive! Your eye for details is amazing.
awesome on the sleeved tubes Charles! but blinking lights?
Wauw, the sleeved tubes do look amazing! Although I think there are to much LEDs above the videocards.
Charles,
this looks amazing. I would really love more of these pics! The leds look nice too and especially with the effect you gain by making pics of it.
absolute crayness this is.
cheers dnb#
Great job as allways duder
more pics thats one awesome build!!!
what size tubing is that looks huge!!!
Aaarrrgh noooo, where are teh tubes!!??
J/K it's amazing:p: Nice to see some fresh ideas:up:
That looks amazing. The sleeving on the tubes isn't something I had seen before. I am not sure if I would do that on my own rig, but it looks amazing nonetheless. Looking forward to more pics.
I do have a quick question. I see that you are planning to offer the Murder mod top grill for sale in July. Are planning to offer other mod pieces as well?
gosh durn that looks freakin sexy as all hell!!!!!! whenever i buy a new case... oh man all these build logs especially this one have been very inspiring
Thanks for the comments Guys. :)
hehe they don't blink - they're white LED strip lights wrapped in... wait for it - sleeving. It's split braid actually. Diffuses the light nicely. What you're seeing is a lens effect because of the long exposure. :yepp:
It's 1/2" ID Tygon - 11/16" OD rather than the usual 3/4" to help slim the sleeved hoses a bit. They still look rather plump though, don't they.
Yes. Details coming very soon. :)
Project Update: Looks much better in the light of day for sure. Buttoned up the bits and filled the loop. 2 of the stopper fittings on the GPU blocks are leaking despite being as tight as I can get them. I'll have to drain and investigate further. I figured I'd take a few more pics before doing so but discovered my camera battery is dead. The day is conspiring against me - perhaps I'll take the rest of the day off and go for a hike.
I'll charge up the battery a bit and post a couple pics before I go. :)
:banana::banana::banana:ing awesome. He is a GOD people!
wow, we need more pictures! that looks amazing
Thanks Guys. :)
Pics downloading from camera. I only took a few because I have to drain the loop ASAP - the grape juice is dripping and that stuff is messy!
I wanted to get some quick pics but once I sort out the fittings, I'll take many more. I just wanted to get some up today rather than make you guys wait any longer.
Friday = pic day - come hell or dripping coolant. :)

Going to drain the loop then go play outside for the day. More pics to follow.
MMmmm yum. Great pics. Personally i think it lacks colour, but then it's not my build is it;). Amazing work with the sleeving too. One quick question; what tube clamps did you use?
how do you mount the hdd ?? can you make more photo of that area ??
Very nice pictures charles! I'm a huge fan of this project as I love the intricate detail work.
What is the direction of flow? It almost appears that if it's going into the cpu block first then it would be going in the outlet. Otherwise the pump is pumping into the reservoir.
Charles, any chance you'll be offering the center piece (with the display) that separates the lower/upper section? I'll also be modding my TJ07 when I get it, but I won't be routing any cables throught the pre-manufactured holes.
Wow, can't believe I never looked at this thread earlier. Truely inspiring. It had definitely made me re-think my builds.
Charles can we get some 1680 x 1050 flavour of those pics :)
You sleeve the sata power connectors aswell!!! wow
amazing build!
OMFG.
The quality and attention to detail is simply amazing.
AMAZING.
After read this thread I think I need to go clean myself up.......
GOOD WORK CHARLES!
I typically like to do all of my own builds, but after seeing this I may need to contact you :D
Charles,
I think only you, me, your wifey and your fish know how much effort you have put into this. It is really too bad that pictures are 1/10th of the story.
There are so many details that aren't even in your illustrations.
As for the total look&feel, you totally pulled it off. It has a very Sci-Fi feel to it, that the geek in me responds to strongly. It reflects my style exactly.
Understated, powerful, timeless.
Side note: I am going to fill up those empty ram banks. It should finish that area off nicely.
Everyone here has been so supportive, I know Charles is driven by your comments. Thanks to everyone here for the great sense of community.
