yes loco its the old chestnut of getting the latest hardware straightaway you did as i and got the hd2900s straightaway and took 3 months to be able to overclock in crossfire so i think as time goes on the x38 will get better and better , whats the biggest improvement you have seen with x38 coming from p35 , 3d03 maybe , its looking good though i must admit i'm tempted to hammer the plastic , but i think ddr3 is my next move now
GPU scores nice. A single 2900XT OC use to do better in nature 2001 then crossfire @ stock for me with asus commado, on X38 i get better results with 2 cards at default speeds. Same settings/LOD:
Commando single 870/999:

X38 crossfire stock:

loco try the new 7.10 catalysts gave 3d01 nature about a 5% boost on mine
The chipset are they so hot that we REALLY need to WC it ?
also, It will be cool if somebody can post a their OC and bios setting like the DFI P35 thread !
yes they are on www.ati.com , i have only tried on xp and they seem a ok
I did it, I couldn't wait....
Just ordered a CORSAIR XMS2 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit, a CORSAIR CMXAF1 ram cooler, and Q6600 GO stepping processor.
My Maximus will be alive soon!!
He is going to have to run an a 8600 GT until the next Big GPU!!
At least I can get my Raptillions raid'ed up...
Lol, first post and it's in this thread.
Maximus SE a Q6600 Go and a pair of 29000 pros
arrived today all nice and cozy, the new water blocks will be here tommarow. Silly me didnt realize Crucial is in Idaho :(
Keep up the good work work guys!
I wasen't planning to do any pencil mods to my board, were you boy's?
Just trying my new siggey out!! ;)
It feels better than HP pavilion... lol
What is the best bios for this board ATM????
Hmmm,
Just like the P5N-E32SLI and the Striker Xtreme...
But don't be fooled by using the same pcb, components might differ and the cheaper version will miss some caps for better voltage regulation, cleaner power or might even use better quality components.
Also, bios for the cheaper board will most likely lack some (critical) settings for fine tuning your overclock.
If there's no difference at all, nobody would buy the top of the line mobo soon as the word spread.
Asus ain't that dumb, are they?
The load line calibration does not functional on the maximus, future bios solved the problem.
Actually Vdroop for high voltage is 0,033volt and 0,018v for low voltage.
With Intel quad core you set in bios 1,25volt the phase providing 1,226v idle and 1,208v in full load, with 1,50volt the phase providing 1,470volt idle and 1,437 in full load.
I mean that the stock heatsink and fan that comes boxed with the retail versions of Intel processors (like my new Q6600 for example) does not fit on this board. The position of the power mosfets and caps around the CPU socket prevent any HSF which does not have at least 5mm clearance (roughly) above the copper base from resting on the socket properly.
What Asus have done is assumed that anyone using this board will be using a HSF that features heatpipes, or a watercooling solution. I'll take a picture tonight to explain better.
I say it won't affect many of us because I assume that most XS forumites are probably running more serious cooling solutions than the stock HSF. It just annoys me because I have everything I need to get my new rig up and running apart from a cooling solution. My watercooling gear might not arrive for days :(
After changes has been made and saved in the bios settings of Asus Commando motherboard the system shut down and reoperate again which may harm HDD. Is there anything like this in Asus Maximus Formula?
and is there any sata raid issue ?
thanks for the reply. that's the clarification i wanted. i'm also running WC'ing and have my gear but i wanted to use the stock cooler just to get it up and running before filling my loop and all that jaz... it would be really annoying to have to drain it after finding out something went wrong. then again i could probably just detach the block from the cpu. damn, i make everything harder then it has to be, lol.
Just gone mine setup and wow, BIOS is lovely, bord with all the LED's is really nice.
Have we finaly gotten a mobo that we have been wanting for a life time. Bios rapes Giga:banana::banana::banana::banana:es multi colored spaced madnes.
Now to see what it will
460FSB my MAX FSB on this bord, this has to be RAM related. 8 bords all maxed at 450/465FSB.
I can run memtest @ DDR1200 4-4-4-8 fine.
I've new ram on the way anyway
I`m having a few probs getting my E6600 stable at 3.4GHz,was rock solid on my previous board but fails orthos / occt within a min or two.
The board wont even boot if i have it set at 8 x 425,anyone got any basic settings that theyve tweaked that they would like to share?
One last thing ive got my memory set to 2.0v in the bios but AI Suit has it at 2.3v and PC Probe at 2.1v?
the real phase power must be measured from this point with Professional multimeter...;)
only one to ground

Testing tonight compared to P5K premium :)
Good luck on the test buddy!!
Looks like your work is cutt out for you.
Thanks for the effort! ;)
Lots of things to do, sorry its only the Asus lineup
Got a problem if anyone can help,i just put another 2gb in and now i cant get it to post, the lights come on and the fans spin and the lcd poster shows "cpu init".
I tried taking the 2gb back out but get the same problem...
Any ideas?
PC just went and hung when i got this, so i had to use my camera phone. Sorry it's poor
Vcore mod drop?
It is possible in this motherboard?
690 fsb, r u kidding me???
Won't this vdroop issue disappear when Asus manage to fix the voltage damper option in the bios, though?
I think that voltage damper affects undervolting and not vdrop. Or am i wrong?
Has anyone experimented with water cooling on the chip set yet? Did it improve your clocks? My board will be in next week and I have a Corsair Nautilus 500 laying around that I could use for a second loop. :) Just wondering if it's worth the effort? TIA.
anyone had any problems with this board and vista x64??? i have a logitech keyboard installed and it keeps locking up apps everytime i try to type with it...ever heard anything like that before??? im reinstalling vista to see if it will fix it...thanx guys ill keep you updated
Logitech has updated drivers for their mouse & keyboard running on 32 & 64 bit Vista. If you can't find it on the motherboard manufactures site, try driveragent.com
Did an Fsb check
bios 0401
nb 1.81
nb gtl x63
sb1.5 1.90v
cpu temp -115
http://valid.x86-secret.com/cache/253594.png
validation
The cpu did a 556 air, and becouse the fsb is cpu related the board problaby will go much higher.
stock board, no watercooling yet.
just had my GO q6600 up to 3.6 on air, not stable. need water to give me the headroom to give it more volts... not long to wait.
24/7 @3400mhz stable..... still loads of options to tweak, i love this chipset. its a monster.
Hope you get your H2O stuff soon, I know you are biting-at-the-bit to clock that new rig!!
Let me get 700FSB stable okay then you can ask me! I am still asking my self and this with like the cheapest ram going. Stuff you'd get out a 5 years old Dell as mines died!
Bord need volts mods big time!
700 x 6 = 6300 / 6.3Ghz will be really nice under my cascade once finsihed.
A friend has a NB single stage, R134a, i think we might need to see what we can do when X38 goes to -30c (1000FSBi hope)
Hay, The water cooling Maximus SE gang! I invite you to discuss in detail any thought that you might have on the subjuct of 'best way to water cooling the Maximus SE'.
I might want to ramble on the subjuct, and didn't want to trash this thread. :)
Keep up the good OC's boys!!
Thread was created in the Liquid Cooling section.
Feeling chatty, stop on by. ;)

Yeah sorry i was tired, didn't sleep very well. 700 X 9.
Hey dude, i found this out soon as i got my bord. I'll know more soon as i can pop the HSF off it.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...87#post2487587
I did some little tests few days ago, pics here:
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/bull...0_G0_L726A951/
i'll get some pics of the bios up, there are a couple of options to help vdroop. cant remember the names of the options. i'll make a mental note next time i'm in the bios....
Just got this board needs some help with all the bios Options Voltage, I have a q6700 G0 I cant get it to run 3.6ghz on this board What do you set the pll Voltage to on this? I have it on Auto. On my p5b I could run 3.6ghz so I know my chip is good
X2beach the CPU GTL voltages will be a big help to you.
They are basicly the ALT GTL control for the CPU'S FSB vcore what FCG covered on his website
Can you give me a link to this website? so I can figure out what to set these at
pete
can you make a 630+ validation?? think maybe its a bug of coretemp
i think this too
http://www.abload.de/img/dscf57822hk.jpg
anyone using vista 64 on this mobo??? im trying to get it working but for some reason im getting 8800 gtx driver crashing all the time on this thing even if its not overclocked im using the newest drivers and have tried reinstalling them and everything but for some reason they just keep crashin on me
Is there ANY reason to run 4GB on Vista 32bit? Will it actually see all the ram or no?
damn it, my board wont be here intill monday, the 15th, this sucks.
LoL Pete :D.
Coretemp calculates : CPU max multi x FSB / real multi..
For example : 7 x 514 from bios, 9 x 514 = 4626 / 7 = ~660 ..
So Coretemp will show 4626MHZ ( 660 x 7 ).
Has anyone been able to get Crucial Ballistix Tracer's 4*1GB to be stable on this mobo? I've tried for the past 2 days and can't get anywhere. Both sets are stable by thereselves at 1141 but all 4 together and either Memtest errors, or Windows BSOD's. Anyone got any settings that they would like to share?
The SupremeFXII wont install on Vista x64? It doesnt have to be in the black PCIE 1x slot does it? I just keep getting HD Audio device, and the SoundMax installer says the driver im trying to install doesnt support my device.
Any help on this?
EDIT: NM after reading the manual a bit, seems this retarded add on can only be used in the "black" PCIE 1x slot as its designated PCIE1x/Audio... so apparently that slot is special....
just a quick update ive flashed to the new bios and it seems to have fixed it!!! finally...damn it..lol...if i have anymore problems ill let you guys know...however i now have to run my ram under its rated speed i no longer can run it @ 1066 mhz...that is a bummer...i think that is a bios problem but at least im not getting driver error dang i hate new mobos....lol alot of damn bugs!!!
Evening all,
Is anyone using an Enermax Galaxy DXX with the Maximus?
The reason I ask, is that the PC refuses to restart. I can boot up fine, but any form of restarting, be it the conventional method letting windows do it, or by hitting the reset switch, it just hangs before post and shows the date on the LCD poster.
I also get a slight beep (very short, and slightly off key) when I power on, and also when I power off.
As I was just explaining to someone over at my forums, this behaviour is identical to my ill fated commando boards, which went on to murder several sets of RAM, so I just want to check if anyone else with an Enermax Galaxy PSU is having similar problems, or if it is indeed just a flakey BIOS.
Cheers :)
Had exactly the same problem until I flashed back to the 0401 bios from 0504. I'm running a Corsair 620HX.

HM: hardware monitor
FSB T.: FSB termination voltage
I have no way of testing that, but I imagine it would.
As a side note, Ive noticed contrary to the P5K Premium/Deluxe where DRAM static read control to enabled yielded the best performance, however setting Transaction booster to 1, and setting that one option to "strong" (name eludes me, its in that row of memory performance options. Its in the Asus guide as "Crazy" function) and it gets about 200-300 MB/s better in Everest benches, as well as a decrease of .2ns on latency.
Anyone know whats holding back the board from doing transaction boost 2? Perhaps someone has some more performance tweaks for this board, quite happy with it so far.
Transaction boost is setting the boards Performance Level.
Transaction boost isn't always setting directly the same PL with the 3 options it has. The PL differs with the divider you're using. When running 5:6 for example, transaction boost = 1 results in PL 8 (according to Memset), transaction boost = AUTO results in PL 10.
When you put transaction boost at 2 the board will run PL 7 or even 6 and for that reason, it won't work.
But when running 2:3 divider and transaction boost = 1, the PL is 10 for example and than transaction boost 2 will work.
The board relaxes the PL when you run a "higher" divider and you can re-adjust it with transaction booster.
Lads i made a bo bo. Pulled stock cooling off, guess what came off as well
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...E/PA145400.jpg
Heheh i now have a naked X38.
The IHS is very very stuck to the stock HSF!
oh ooooh!!!
Pete, Is any one making a chip-set cooler for the X38 chip yet? I have seached the websites, and haven't found one yet! I ain't taking my stock one off till I have an aftermarket cooler to replace it with !!
Heatsink
No the chips has a IHS just like a CPU! Then it has a HSF ontop
How is the water block mounted? On top of the heatpipe/heatsink assembly or directly to the chipset IHS?
Fusion block
Heatsink with heatpipe
Think plate
IHS
Chipset
How it goes, i'll try and geta photo and i will be taking apart as well
So theres 4 layers of thermal compound between the chipset and waterblock? Seriously, they should stop putting this crap on the boards. I would rather have some simple and beefy alu heatsinks mounted properly (and no heatpipes), prepared with the option to easily mount a 40 or 60mm fan on the nb.
I will get a photo, might even blow toruch it to get it apart
Pete,
Was the NB IHS adiquetly covered with TIM? And did it dry out? Just wondered why it just poped off and why the IHS is glued to the HSF.
