Not necessarily built-in, but maybe as a "language pack"?
Hey guys! New user here anxious to get my hands on XSOS beta. Where, when, how? Thx!
I think it's a bit later for beta signing... (sigh)
I didn't put it right: I don't want to sign up for the beta testing ( I know it's to late), but I'm waiting for the release ( I assumed that you would launch a public beta version first, to be reviseted by a wider community) :).
Well, let's hope the closed beta won't be too long :P
Is there going to be a public beta ?
nope
it says teaser shot....where ? I have read the all the pages
Wish it would run Pro Tools LE. Hmmm maybe it will! although PTLE 7.3 checks for XPSP2 and throws errors when installed in compatibility mode... then won't uninstall cuz theres no way to make vista uninstall in sp2 compat mode :(
I'm willing to try it though if there are other performance minded pro audio buffs out there who like to load a game or two once in a while.
The teaser shot is in the original post, but the link is dead.
Can someone re-upload it?
So, when is Beta going to start? I believe I signed up in time...I hope, hehe.
I checked the website, and from what I've pieced together it appears it hasn't started yet...
Someone fill me in, please :)
i wanna see teh shot too lol. Does it have something like aero?
no, because we don't see any performance benefits from it.Quote:

This thread is funny just because of peoples lack of understanding.
I think what some of you are asking for is Nlite, not a complete new OS. And if you just want the eye candy, go get Vista or Linux.

well I agree that some people like lighter OSes, however there are very very very many things being done with this OS that you could never DREAM of doing with nLite. For example the removal of ALL DRM from Vista is far more than nLite could possibly do in the next couple years.Quote:

But Im not quite sure of "what" it is.
Is is a Vista that has been striped down to a minimal size?
Is is a XP that has been striped down to a minimal size?
Is is a OS written from the buttom that supports the posebility of running xp based software?
Sry if this has been explained before :)
not sure "^^
Cant wait for this!!! "nn" you have to setup a pay-pal link, your time is worth money!
I would like to know the same thing, since this seems like a really interresting OS :toast:Quote:

Judging by your comments there certainly aren't any sort of strict requirements put into place by Microsoft on you(r team), the lack of which is totally out of character for MS. So I am confused as to how Microsoft sees a benefit to actually working with someone to make an operating system that effectively gives away DirectX10, one of their primary marketing points for Vista. They wouldn't do that out of the goodness of their heart and, in any event, not without the most odious contract and NDA agreement ever devised by a team of lawyers.
Help me to be at ease. :)
I hate to be a pissant, but it's not really something anyone should be worrying about. As long as nn_step and his militantly anonymous development team don't charge for their work, there's not really anything Microsoft can do besides force them to pull it from their site.
As for us, the end-users, all we have to worry about is when we can get it. If the development gets through beta, download it. If it's stable and compatible with your system, install it. If it does what you want it to do and you like it, use it. If any of these steps fail, buck up and buy a copy of Vista. Or, better yet, learn to love Linux.
nn_step will look out for himself and his team, no doubt. There's really no need for anyone else to concern themselves with licensing and whatnot.
Well, no. Installing software is an act of trust, especially an OS. The questions I have asked aren't even close to unreasonable and I am doing so in a non-confrontational way. I am just asking because I am curious. When I go through the various posts, I notice there is actually precious little in the way of hard detail about XSOS (other than claims about what it can do). Therefore I ask a few basic 101-style questions, as anyone not willing to install random programs and OS's "just because" would certainly do in my place (or so I would hope).Quote:

In discussions with them he sends them some info and golly willikers they find out that this guy actually knows what he's doing and does a few things better than they do.
A lot of people may not care for Mr. Gates but we will all agree that he isn't stupid. When new knowledge and ability come along he'll grab it and fast.
Now they listen and encourage him to go forward hoping they can pick up a few tips from what he's doing.
There's supposition and fact in what I wrote but 35 years in the business world tells me that I'm damned close to the real facts of this.
My hat's off to nn_step both for his knowledge and his sticking to this.
A hell of a project for a couple guys when you think of the resources that MS tosses at making or modifying an OS!
As to what's in it for Microsoft? Knowledge. Information.
And yes, they do have stipulations involved here to try and protect themself if nn_step decided to say FU and blast this with a key all over the internet.
He's dealing straight with them and they recognise this fact and are dealing straight with him.
Not common in todays business world but it does happen.
If that is the case IŽll clap my hands and jump a few times on the stop :DQuote:

There are many large corporations that would agree to just about anything and pay almost anything for the opportunity you seem to have had, and yet they gave the rights away? You even refer to Microsoft as M$ in several places, so there is obviously no respect gained from your time working with them, why not?
It seems so totally out of character for Microsoft that I have to ask this. I don't think it's unreasonable.
will it be ony in english, or multi language ? ( french inside ;) )
As someone with "35 years of business experience", you should know that you don't even get your calls returned by Microsoft, let alone get in their door, if they think you're a clown that will fall flat on your face, as you describe it.Quote:

The people at Microsoft who just designed DX10 could do this as well as anyone.Quote:

Hence my curiosity on this point, a point I would assume the XSOS design team (nn_step + ?) would recognize as critical for many people unfamiliar with their efforts. This really is the simplest question to answer. What specifically does Microsoft gain from this?

Why would MS get it pulled when they are a PARTNER (or at least significant contributor) in the development? Right?Quote:

Basically convenient stuff such as the ability of the OS to autodetect new hardware, and autoplay when u insert a cd rom, etc. I know you hardcore guys can probably type a few lines of code to do all of that for you but us newbs rely on windows ability to do alot of this stuff for us. So will stuff like that be in XSOS or is alot of stuff gona have to be done manually.
umm you are speaking of Plug and Play and every version of windows after 95 supported itQuote:

I know ths has been asked a lot in this thread, but I think I missed nn's answer. I want to know if XSOS' development team is planning international language support. I am particulary interested in Japanese language support.
I have no idea how is this OS being developed but, if it is borrowing resourses in any way from an existing Window$ version, then I guess it should not be a problem (that would further justify why M$ is asking for an existing Window$ license, BTW).
Please do not flame me. I am asking because I do not know :stick:
yes XSOS is going to feature a good few languages, however we are waiting on the majority of our language packs as we speak. So no worries
so if you resemble it then you know what im talkin about ;) :p:Quote:

In what way?
Do we get the option to, in some way, mount drives in directories, i.e. any directory, or is it some how predetermined where my bezillion of drives and partitions end up and are accessable? (Accessable added because it's nigh, not to say totally, impossible to get a file from /dev/hd or equiv. in a *nix environment, but all all drives and partitions still end up in /dev/)
Full integration with unix systems?Quote:
