it will play most games (working on the ALL part) and will work with a list of applications but I make no promises of 100% compatible with all applications.
Heck even Microsoft wouldn't even consider making such a statement of 100% compatibility

cmon... send me a beta link...
Patient, you will get your link soon enough.Quote:

The only compatibility issues you're going to run into with XSOS is mainly just missing dll's and most of that is fixable. Beyond that if you use sites that require the IEcore be aware that the full core is not present so even the likes of the IETab extension for firefox will not be of any use.

nn_step if you succeed M$ will sue you for this, in past they didn't agree whit Lindows because it sounds to much like Windows and did the same, if XSOS V3.0 Beta turns up to be capable they'll kill it because they don't like competition - hope I'm wrong.

Actually I have already been working with the Microsoft lawyers, and I have their Blessing to continue my work as long as I follow the guidelines that they have granted me.Quote:

Vista will be the last behemoth to survive off of old code; MS knows they can't afford a repeat of the last 5 years. On the other hand, they can't afford to recode from scratch either. By using open source linux or unix as the kernel, they can then add their API's into the mix and get the best of both worlds, at least theoretically...

nn I´ve read the whole thread but can´t find if XSOS is 32bit or 64bit based (although you said you used a unix based kernel so chances are it´s 64bit) can you confirm?.
32bit AFAIK
Hmm, do you trust lawyers? - especially M$, which are the next thing to Devil itself, so sneaky yet they use kind words, speak whit other lawyers (friends or family) or this guys might ruin your life, or ho knows - I say this by experience. :nono:Quote:

nn_step, I see you mentioned Wine.
Is XSOS just Wine prepacked into a Unix distro, or a seperate product with Wine elements?
I'm interested in testing XSOS 3.0 beta too.
I'll definately beta test this, I've got a few pretty demanding games I could give a try.
what? its using wine to emulate dx?
more details... please. im drooling.
where did he mention wine ????
No it is something new and very different. We are a few generations far more advanced than Wine.Quote:

Gigabyte DS3
C2D E6300 1.86GHz @ 3.2GHz
2x512MB DDR2 @ 457MHz (DDR914 5-5-5-15)
7600GT 575MHz @ 649MHz
2x200GB Maxtor 6L200S0 SATA
As you can see my system is limited by RAM, with a OS like this I'll be very happy. I tried Vista and the result was under 100MB of mem left after it started.
What about the 64 bit version? the apps I use to work with eats a lot more than 2gb so 32bits would be kinda useless for me...
hi, i know i dont have many posts but i'm watchin u almost daily
you are doing a service for us all(and M$ job)
i would like to try the beta, i got just the machine: celeron333/64MB/3GB
cheers
ho there, i cant believe i didnt pay attention to this before. i guess ill try it out, cant seem to get linux working on my alternate hd, so i guess i might as well try this.

nn, buddy:
1. ok.. you might be early twenties by now, sorry..
2. some high end benchers said it was slower for what they do
3. ok, sorry, did not know that, since i don't do that
4. nice of you to give them credit  who are they?
Well, it would be nice if you could post a little comparo bench runs, so that pepole know if this is what they need..
Keep it up and send me the link when you have it.. thanks!
Are you just looking to be ridiculously insulting, or did you have a point? People have been coming up with alternatives to windows for ages. Heck, OS2 Warp kicked the s*** out of windows back in the day. Based on the fact that the previous version of XSOS was a successful (if not ever-so-slightly slower) operating system, I think the above comments are unwarranted. XSOS is Unix using windows APIs, so it's not the same as you tweaking ME, and is a remarkable accomplishment in my books...Quote:

I'm interesting in playing around with XSOS V3.0 Beta, and will provide feedback on any problems i run into. I have plenty of spare hd's, ect too.
I'm ready to play with 3.0 Beta if You need more testers, of course. ;)
(offtop) Hello, Janka :D
welcome to XS :toast:
Hi tarakan !
I am activated AT LAST! :D
It's time to learn better English :p:
NN,
if you are asking to open community to help you, can't you be a little more open about this then? You know, about 10 people asked what is this based on, but have been ignored.. c'mon, is it that big of a secret? Same with other questions where you answer with Maybe, or Kind of.. Also, I'm still confused.. the screenshot says Benching OS, but you said it's really designed for crunchers? And.. who else is working on this? It would be nice to hear from them too, plus I can't see how answering these questions could hurt anything, so - thanks :D
oh ya, and sum bencheeees!
I'm up for beta testing.
the Honest truth is the base is a hybrid, most closely related to minix.Quote:

I respect the desire of some members of the team to be silent partners.
Thanks to the overly generous help from Microsoft.
Hardware requirements updated to reflect the addition of our new prefetch.
however you may be able to run on less memory but it'll lack alot of the speed up
You can count me in, it will be a nice break from my normal nlite install.
Count me in
I'm very interested in this, at last an alternative OS to play games
I'd like to give this a shot. nn this OS has no problem with dual CPU rigs does it?
as mentioned in the thread, no it works fine with 4 seperate cpus and higher
I'd like to test this system out. My system is as in my sig. Where do I go from here?
Thanks.
Hello. I would like to help out with the betatesting of this alternative OS. I can't give much feedback about some kind of software, like firewalls or anivirus, but I can about many others.
Will you eventually need to test certain specific software/hardware with it? I think it would be good doing so.
Anyway, count me in as a betatester. :)
You wait till nn_step releases the beta to usQuote:

I just got qemu working so i would like to be in on this to:)
id be up to tryin this out, i got a few rigs i could try it on, let me kno when its ready. thanx gonna try v2.0 asap just to get an idead what im workin with.
if is still available for signing for beta testing... count me in
i would like to be in
i'd like to jump in on this and see how well it does:D
I'm intrested on how my 8800GTS is going to do DX10 without any drivers from NVIDIA...

- If i remember correctly, the LINE count of Windows 2000 source code was near 20 million. Linux 2.4 kernel was 4 million. It was just the base KERNEL.
- You responded that it is based on a hybrid, similar to minix. IIRC, minix was micro-kernel architechture based. Not hybrid. Atleast thats what the author said.
- From the screenshots you have posted thus far, it seems stuff like Management console is also available. How is this possible? Did you write up a emulator for Windows executables? Did you rewrite the kernel. Both a extremely optimistic guesses as it requires quites a considerable bit of time and effort to pull of such a thing.
- Driver support?
Please take a bit of time to answer these question, am sure it will clear lots of confusion.

more screenshots?
im putting bets down on virtualization technology. i was talking to somebody @ Microsoft and he told me that ati/nvidia drivers on vista are much better optimized, so far...
i would love to give this a shot, im currently building a small form factor athlon xp system i could test it out on, that would be fantastic!
1) I know, what is your point? We have the man power, skill and talent, I truely believe our limits are only those of our budget and hardware supplies.Quote:

3) no emulation required, I was crazy enough to work Win32 into the API
4) we are working on Driver support and the required "Conversations" that come with it
Dear NN- Having really enjoyed XSOS v2.0, I'm having xtreme difficulty waiting for XSOS v3.0!
Please allow me the pleasure of beta-testing XSOS v3.0.
(sorry to beg so soon...have been lurking these forums a long time! I would like to help with bug reports)
Thank you!
NN, does having a unix based hybrid kernel do anything in terms of stability, like in terms of BSODing and so on. Since ReactOS used a hybrid kernel (obviously not the same) but still suffered from the issue.
I want your mad skills to flow into me...
My beta testing pc came in today:banana: Just waiting for the release.
dont count me in. pls. i dont want to be a beta tester. :D
just let me know when the final ver available.
btw, this os sounds promising  . cant wait any longer to see its gaming perf. i v XSOS 2.0 and cant install it using Virtual PC 2004, somthin like missing dll.
Is it too late to be a beta tester?
How much system RAM will this OS support?
Sure would be sweet to finally utilize all 4 GB...
If its not to late i can test it on my s754 athlon system.
Keen to give it ago
Is it too late?
I registered the minute I saw this post! I'm absolutely interested in contributing to this exciting project. I have about 12 years of experience with computers (mostly M$ systems), so hopefully I can be of assistance.
I have an AMD64 system and a mini-ITX 1Ghz Epia system I could test this on. From my point of view (may be that you think different) it's crucial to test this OS on a wide variety of HW. If I find it interesting enough I could also test on a Celeron system and an older AMD rig.
Anyways, I'm checking this thread every day now because I find this sort of project very interesting. Good luck :)
I agree that testing it on a large variety would be very helpful. Don't worry, there is plenty of space for Beta testing :toast:
That's nice ;)Quote:

im curious why does it require a dvd burner, cant we use regular cd's? If thats the case im gona have to go out and buy a dvd burner lol
Because our Ultimate OS disk isn't going to fit on a CD. It is going to include multiple operating systems, tools, and features. Yes individual OS's of ours do fit on CD's but we are suggesting this because it would make upgrade in the future easiestQuote:

You probably have lots of experience in doing beta tests, but anyway: Twelve Tips for Running a Beta Test :) (I recommend everybody whos doing the testing reads this)
Well I'm always interested in new OSes and a Windows alternative is something that is quite interesting. I'd be interested in trying it out, espically as a contrast to Vista, and helping you with it.
I am rather interested.
I do have a few,perhaps "Noobish" questions.
I see this is a *nix OS?
But at the same time I see it supports DX10 and Requires windows? And can run most Windows Games...
How does this work? -- This is Confusing me.. rather a while lot.
emulation layer, kinda like how Conroe is a RISC processor that support a CISC instruction set.Quote:

lol damnit man, now im gona have to go spend more money on a dvd burner lol, when can i expect the beta so i know how long i have for me to purchase one. By all the information i am gathering, this os should work much in the same way windows does and one should not really notice much difference other then in performance, some functions that hardcore people would know about, am i right? If not, how would you summarize it, if you could say a sentence about it...
I didn't want a DVD player but then PC gamer started putting out the demo discs on DVD, now XSOS is going to DVD, well now that I have two DVD drives, its all good.
dvd burners are like 30-40$.. get one :p
Hmm so it s using the linux kernel?Quote:

Wow... I have so many Questions.. and this is really interesting and confusing.. and I don't know enough, and wish I knew more..
hmm, i was experimenting with mojopac, a program that plugs into api (kernel level) to emulate your own desktop, windows setting, etc. but its slow. will xsos 3 take a similar approach?
I will give it a try. Sounds Cool :D
What version of (Unix/Linux) is under the covers ?
if your talking about my post, none. it plugs straight into the bottom layer. kernel-level.
as for xsos, i don't know what type of kernel he is implementing.
jiffy pop kernels, i think with butter, which is my favorite :D ;)Quote:
