took my dually to work :D
The 1U Supermicro server is up and running. Currently on Ledien Classical due to only 1gb of ram.
Sold the Dual 2ghz box, looking for something more cost effective.
what wrong with 1GB? most of my WCG only rigs use only 256mb or 384mb or 512mb and work great even my amd dual core has only 512mb right now.Quote:

You shouldn't be complaining!! I am running WCG on an old Celly500 mobile with only 64MB, with Winamp and writing this post!! 1GB is waay more than enough for WCG... :)
Ok, its running guys. I was just worried because when I ran it on my C2D it was using over 1gb of ram.

Yes, it's kinda messy. No, it's not finished.
Il have new pics up in about a week, got around 6/7 E4400's coming in for Dedicated Crunching
You should share something like that.

That's what my 'farm' looks like....everything that can crunch, does crunch
Sitting here in a Starbucks waiting to go to an appointment.
Took these yesterday. Screwing around with firmware and a Nikon D80. Apparently you can flash D200 firmware onto camera and get a bit more features. Seems like a good camera for traveling and such. Only messing around with ISO speed, ISO speed is 3200 for those who care, so that is why the images are so grainy.
Here is the computers I have setup at my office, I somewhat like to build "fun looking" computers as people seem to gravitate to them.

The last pic is old, taken before I added the second rad. The "case" is just 1/2" MDF I cut out with a table saw and jigsaw, it's held together with wood screws. Each MB has it's own tray that I can swap in and out in a few minutes. The front openings are covered with a screen to keep some dust and curious fingers out.

I'll likely swap out the remaining 2 Optys for Quads after the July price drop. Up till now I've been running XP stripped down on some ancient IDE drives. But one of the Quads is now happily crunching along with XSOS on a flash drive. Eventually I'll convert the other 3 to help cut down on heat, noise and power consumption. Needless to say this baby makes a very nice space heater!
Very nice setup you've got there!!!
really nice
Wow that looks good, watercooled and stacked neatly into one tower. Awesome job man.
What are your temps with those cpu's in series. I guess you combine one opty with a quad each time?
Very cool!
Thanks guys. Temps aren't outstanding but safe enough. 45-50c for the Optys and 55-60c for the quads. Everything is in one loop. It starts at the reservoir up top and goes to the first pump at the very bottom and then goes: Opty>Opty>Quad>pump #2>rad>rad>quad>reservoir. When I first built it I was running 4 Optys at 2.8GHz off of a single pump and rad. Hopefully the cooling system holds up when I fill all 4 bays with quads.
Are you folding for XS or another team?
Just threw in with Team XS! :D I was with Team Canada but really didn't know anyone else on the team and I have more in commmon with you guys anyways. The information posted here has helped me a great deal so it's the least I can do. Just quickly glancing at your team stats on WCG, you'll probably see me in the top 10 of the daily stats under the name "olympic". I tried signing up here under that name but it was already taken.
I've got a few more:
QX6700 at 3.5GHz (primary rig)
2 more Opteron 165's at 2.8, air cooled in their own cases.
E6400 at 3Ghz (girlfriend)
A64 3800+ stock (relatives)
Celeron 2.7GHz (relatives)
All told it's around 60-70k/day on WCG. Here's a link to pics of my primary rig, they're all out of date but you get the basic idea.
Current specs are:
TT Armor VA8003SWA
QX6700 @ 3.5GHz
P5B Deluxe WiFi
2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-8500
BFG 8800GTX OC
Silverstone Strider 850w
2x 74GB Raptors RAID 0
Western Digital 500GB
Creative Extreme Gamer
Swiftech water cooling with dual 2x120mm rads
D-Tek Fuzion CPU block
Blue LED fans and cold cathodes
Dual boot with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate X64
Peripherals:
Benq FP241w 24" LCD
500w JVC amp
Athena Micra 6 5.1 speakers.
Saitek Eclipse II keyboard
Logitech MX1000 mouse
Welcome to the team. Thank you for joining.
@Fallwind: :welcome: and glad to have you with us.
I remember when you first posted that "box" over at the WCG forum.
Very nicely done..Clean and simple.
Welcome to the team, fallwind! Good to have another extreme cruncher.
Heh. That is almost exactly why I started crunching here with XS. I was on another forum's crunching team. I liked them enough, got to know quite a few real well, but found myself spending more and more time here and learning much. I tried running for both forums for a while, but eventually just decided to throw it all in over here. We have a real good bunch of peeps over here. You'll like it here, I think.Quote:

Thanks for joining the team.:)
Welcome !!
When i looked at the stats this morning , i was like WTF is this olympic guy
Some serious crunching power you got there
Wow, pretty nice unit you got there
:welcome: and thanks for joining up with us :)
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I'm glad to finally be here. I'm honored to contribute with such a dedicated group of enthusiasts. I see we're averaging over 2 million points/day now, very impressive considering the size of the team. Methinks Easynews may be in trouble come July 22...lol! :D

Do any companies make something similar to the "box" pictured above?
I know a server rack is similar but I don't want to run any server or server mobo in the rack. Ideally I'd love to have a "box" that can hold 4 mobos and everything that comes along with it (PSU, video card...).
I think you would have to build one of those boxes. You can put a regular ATX mobo in a rackmount case. the biggest limitation in those is height, meaning you wont be able to put one of he high end tower heatsinks in it. But, looking at that box, you couldnt put one in there either. You could build a server rack and watercool it with pretty good success. Just make sure you have a really powerful pump.
I can't believe there are no companies that build a nice looking box to simply lay a couple of mobos in. I do agree watercooling would be the way to go due to lack of space between each level. I know I could get one built but I'm so picky about case appearance and how it fits with the rest of my room (I'll post some pics of my new setup later - it's so clean it will likely scare off some of you ;)
Dont mind the Mess.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC_0031.jpg
What mess? from what i've seen here you have one of the cleanest workplaces!
I just found WCG and Boinc. After trying the WCF universal client long enough to discover it was only using one CPU I loaded the BOINC client. :)
I'm using Boinc 5.8.16 and using BOINCstats as the manager. Originally I joined the Utah team but discovering that it's pretty inactive I switched to Xtreme Systems. Maybe my meager contribution will help. :D
There isn't much to say yet since I'm just getting started and don't have much experience. However, I have noticed that Xeon processors don't seem to benchmark very well. A Xeon 3.4Ghz processor seems to only get 1674 Whetstone and 2439 Dhrystone per CPU which seems to pretty much stink on ice compared to others I've seen posted. I'm using 5.8.16 since that's the last "recommended" version. I don't want to use development versions since I need the servers to be stable.
I have a Liebert rack in my basement and my office is upstairs. My main PC (QX6700 quad core 4GB Windows XP 64) is currently down due to leaking coolant:mad:.
Intel processors are all hyperthreading so they show up as having twice as many processors for Boinc uses if I run them at 100%.
Currenly I'm only running Boinc at about 50% on the servers due to the heat wave and other work in progress. If boinc profiles let you alter cpu usage by time of day I'd do more at night but what can you do, eh?
The rack systems are:
- HP Proliant DL380 dual 3.4Ghz Xeons, 4GB memory, Windows Server 2003 (32 bit)
- HP Proliant DL380 dual 3.0Ghz Xeons, 4GB memory, Windows Server 2003 (32 bit)
- HP Proliant DL580 quad 2.8Ghz Xeons, 8GB memory, Windows Server 2003 (32 bit)
- HP nx9600 laptop (3ghz Intel, 2GB memory)
- temporary workstation ($430.00 to build): AMD Athlon 2.0Ghz dual core, 2GB memory, 512MB video card. Windows XP professional 32 bit.
- Offline dammit - QX6700 quad core @ 3.2ghz, 4GB memory. Windows XP Professional 64 bit. Dual boot into 32 bit for games. :)
I have some apps that can't support 64 bit still so I'm stuck with 32-bit on the servers for now. Mostly I use the above for VMWare images in Windows software, database work, and web development. Before Boinc they were, alas, idle much of the time.
All servers built courtesy of eBay. The rack was in exchange for work I did but only has 19"x19" shelves and the HP rails won't work. So, basically, it looks like crap. I haven't organized the cables yet.
Anyway, here are my pics!
Here is the rack fully illuminated in lurid detail:
http://www.xmission.com/~billf/images/rack1.jpg
My office looks even more crappy. In the interests of full disclosure I didn't tidy before taking a picture. To the right you see my laptop and cheap temporary workstation I made (newegg.com $430.00 + S&H) because my main pc is down.
http://www.xmission.com/~billf/images/office.jpg
Here is my laptop. I don't use it much so it runs 2 Boinc tasks at 100% when not in use.
http://www.xmission.com/~billf/images/laptop.jpg
Thanks for joining for team.:) That's a lot of hardware you got there. As we like to say here, doesn't matter whether you have one or a hundred machines crunching, we appreciate any and all contributions.
Nice rack :slobber:
:welcome:
The best way to bench HT chips is just to disable HT in the Bios. Because they're HT, Boinc will be running two threads whilest it's benching. This will lower your benches.
The best thing is to bench with HT off, then run with HT on.
Welcome to the team !
nice rack
about running BOINC at night : that is possible with a scheduled task i think. Meshmesh will chime in here :)
Thanks Jaco. I can suspend to stop Boinc completely but I'd really like a way to run different profiles at different times of day. If there's a way to use a local profile instead of the WCG/account manager profiles then that'd help. I'll ask about this in a new thread.
Nice rack, maybe one of these days when I stop moving my stuff around so much(in college) I'll get one.
When I was back at home over the holiday I stopped by our state surplus and noticed they had two quality compaq racks for only $40 each! Too bad it was 15mins to closing time on a friday, so now I'm some 8 hours away again. I would've loved to buy them, but they were full height(42u I assume) and looked solid, so I couldn't break them down for long distance transportation :(
Rcofell, I definitely wish I could find an auction like that! That's probably how lots of eBay sellers get stock. You can generally take the sides, shelves, and casters off of a rack and but you still have the 4 post core with any fans, etc. on the top.
The thing is I'm now 8 hours away from the matter :-/
If I was there say thursday or a few hours earlier, I could've borrowed a truck from my dad's business to move it and store it at his shop until I was back from my summer internship. Now the question is do I dare put effort into finding out if they still have them, and if I could get someone to pick em up... I just don't think I'd want to keep one around until I'm in a more permanent residence(which includes a personal datacenter  ), while I'd rather want something around 27u that comes apart and is alot easier to move. Now if someone would be interested in one even with the cost of freight(not sure myself how much that'd entail), I'd consider pursueing them.
They looked pretty similar to the ones here
Go to Advance > Preferences. The preferences set are unique to your PC, not all of them. You can then select the time of the day you want to work done. In your case, just have it start at night and end in the morning.
Actually, I'd like to reduce activity instead of stopping it completely. Instead of a schedule for suspending all activity I'd prefer a way to change the number of processors / maximum number of active tasks at different times of the day. That way I can run at 100% overnight but still run one or two processes when I'm using the server for something else during the day.
SOrry for intrusion in this thread.
I was looking at this whole day yesterday ( Thanks to my 256k connection  ) And i must say, you guys have some great systems there for the great cause.
Here is my mini farm.
Its nothing compared to some of the machines here but here goes.
The stacker houses Q6600 Go @ 3.55Ghz, 4Gigs of PDP, OCZ gamexstream 700W.
The laptop is HP DV2500t with T7100 and 2Gigs of DDR2 667
The dusty chieftec cabinet houses poor old P5N-E with E6750 @ 3.2Ghz and 1GB Kingston.
The setup is good for around 30k a day. Not much but all 3 are crunching 24x7. Laptop stops crunching only when it leaves home :)

I was going to say ONLY 30k a day???
(we really need a voice icon with Borrat saying "Is Nice!!" here)
More Pictures Less Talking!!! Ops, i dont have a farm so i dont need to take a picture :)
Not really a farm, but the rig I would like to contribute with.
I Want that setup.
That will be all.
EDIT: The cat would be pretty cool too!
HAHA!
that setup is almost as awesome as the cat! (also, good choice of heatsink ;) )

Thought I might share you my gaming/crunching machine, Q6600 @3.7GHz.
This quad is killing my mobo, melted the 4 pin connector, had to put on some heatsinks on the MOSFET's too (50% MX-2, 50% glue :D ), had to volt mod the crap out of it due a huge voltage drop.
My home file server is too ugly to show :D Nothing special, Celly D 420.

Have to rip out that CCFL, blue+yellow doesn't mix very well and wastes energy.
Half of the dining room crunchers, 8 cores on the left, 4 on the right. I really wanted to take a pic of the new 24" LCD compared to the old 19" CRT. So I did and am posting it here.
Finally opened it. :)
Now to disconnect the 19" and actually install the LCD
http://members.cox.net/serlv/011.jpg.
Damn... I need to get a 24". i reckon 26 is a tiny bit too big. 24" would be the shizz.
http://i1.tinypic.com/7w7nv2q.jpg
My two sitting on the floor...Quad crunches 24/7. Non-Quad crunches 24/7
Look like nice rigs!!
~~
Yeah, this is new to me, but I could't even imagine 26 or 27... it's is pretty friggin' huge to me!
Hell, I figure even a 22" would have been fine, but I wanted 1900 x 1200. Takes some getting used to, though.
I could not get the monitor to accept 1900x1200 ( its' native resolution ) until I messed around with PowerStrip, and setup a custom profile that had this monitor's specific Horizontal and Vertical Synchronous Range, as well as the refresh rate.
Someday I'm going to have to get motivated to get this neat enough to take pics of!:p:
I don't even need the PM..I know, set up the FTP:rofl:
Hmmm. whats on teh FTP? :hehe:
