I was really bummed after I bought these asus top 3870s. They deviate from reference and noone can figure out a vmod so they really blow. Like I said I'm playing with an e8400 now because of that silly cheapazchips thing in the 3d section but I have a q9650 incoming so in the next couple days I'll do that single card run. I want to rerun all my 3d06 scores with the new cpu and also run some 3d vantage since they're giving boints now :D

I like it alot. It's got a decent layout although I may change my mind on that if I try to insulate it for phase. Maybe not the top overclocking board around but extremely stable and I've said this before, not ram fussy like a couple other boards I tried. The bios maybe could use a few more voltage options but it does the job ok. Not outstanding but very solid overall.

the quad will give you slightly higher overall score especially if you do a PCMark 2005 bench run....you should do that bench with your E8400 and then do a comparison with the quad at the same frequency and FSB.Quote:

The asus cards don't necessarily perform worse, they actually use a rather nice stock oc bios, it's just components they use don't lend themselves to vmodding apparently :shakes:

I've got a P5E3 Premium on the way myself. Trying to sell this one. It was a good board, but i just can't get over the lack of Vdrop/Droop control. LLC doesn't really seem to do anything, and there doesn't seem to be any droop mod for it. For $378 I at least wanted it to do as well as my pencil modded $150.00 xfx 680i.
You guys have any suggestions on that front? This poor q9450 I bought is taking 1.425V BIOS just to hit 3.6GHz stable. A little hight for a 45nm quad I think.

try out the Biostar TPower I45 board...it is a fairly good budget board...the quad overclock will be on par with most other boards...the dual core does very well with the Biostar board.Quote:

This is always what I've understood. As far as I know, I haven't confused them.
It's always been the case that pencil modding a board allows me to run the CPU stable at a lower voltage and produce less heat. I understand the dangers of reducing vdroop, but I do it anyway because I haven't been burned yet.
I'll take the example of my latest Drop/Droop mod with the P5E-VM HDMI that I was working with. Both Drop and Droop were significantly reduced. The end result was suddenly I could run my 1.2625VID Q6600 at 3GHz stable on 1.200/1.184v.
This was the first step to get to that voltage:
BIOS - 1.3125v
CPUZ - 1.3040v
------------
IDLE - .0085 = Drop
BIOS - 1.3125v
CPUZ - 1.3120v
---------------
LOAD - .0005v
VDroop = -.008v
It was a reverse droop, but it was very tiny. I have since rubbed off a bit of graphite. Regardless, my point would still be that with a pencil mod, both the drop and droop are reduced.
I might be wrong here, I don't have nearly as much experience with this board as you guys do, but invariably it is so much easier to get quads stable on a cheaper board with a vdroop mod than it is on this board.
I guess I'll just deal with it. And thx for your input as always.

there is about an 0.024 Vdroop on the biostar board; respectable...i do not get concerned over Vdrop since that is mainly controlled by the bios code and the reading software working properly...Abit's IP35 Pro had a huge Vdrop problem...when i say Vdrop, i mean what you set in the bios and then what is readout via the software at idle...IP35 Pro board Vdroop was large, usually ranging around 0.040v to 0.048v.
this gigabyte board has a very reasonable Vdroop...i read about 0.025v (DMM) droop when at 100% core engagement.
like i said, don't get wrapped around the axle with your concern over Vdrop..it is really a non-issue.
Ok, first the quirkiness that I encountered with my p5e3 premium wifi. I truly think I may have had a defective board. Sometimes one of my x16 pci-e slots would drop to x4 when I ran 3850X2's in crossfireX. I encountered random loss of usb ports. Bios occasionally spontaneously lost all settings and returned to defaults. And perhaps this was only due to immature bios but I found it to be somewhat ram fussy.
The F6 bios, I've tried both the official and the F6a and I still like the F5d, even after putting in a q9650.

Ace, at 450x8 3.6GHz my Vdroop is 1.392v-1.344v = .048v (CPUZ and Everest)
This is with a BIOS voltage setting of 1.4v on a Q9450. It's a little higher than I'd like for Vcore and Vdroop, but it's manageable considering my load temperatures are Low to Mid 40's at 20deg ambient.

Does anyone else have the same problem as I do with this board when you update to the newest network drivers you lose you internet connection?
I using vista 64bit and I got the right drivers, I install them and my network drops.
I am also using Vista x64. I have had no problems, but I have not installed drivers recently.

my Bone Trail finally pissed me off one too many times and i just bit the bullet and ordered an X48T-DQ6. it arrives on friday. thanks a lot for running a great thread - i'm already taking notes. i only plan on hitting 445 FSB, so i don't expect too many problems.
