The Official Core 2 Duo Overclocking Thread

Hi all,

I need some serious help here!

I just built a Core2Duo E6300 system with an ASUS P5B delux board and I updated the BIOS. I am using the retail kit and heatsink. My system is heating up and I need your help to figure out what to do here. Everything is at default (not overclocked). Volts are as follows:
1.136
3.248
5.017
12.249

With the heatsink on (not sure if it is seated 100% properly tho) I get around 90c. With the heatsink off it goes through 106c in under a minute. This is all under no stress.

Should I just send something back for an exchange?
Or am I missing something (a tweak or something) here?

What is at fault...the chip or the mobo? I tried to touch the chip with the heatsink off. I was able to touch it. Not too sure of it's temperature tho. So maybe the mobo is just recording it wrong?

Is there some IRC channel that I can jump on so it might make talking this out easier?

NEVER take the HSF off of the processor unless you want a crispy chip. If you are hitting 90 Degrees at idle, you have a problem. Reapply the thermal compound (preferably a high grade version like Arctic Silver 5) and reseat the HSF.

What program are you using to check the Temp? The Bios?

Wow, I didn't think it was so huge to run the chip without a heatsink. Especially because I read somewhere that folks have experienced 50C without any heatsink on.

When I did run it without the heatsink on it did heat up incredibly hot and then the machine turned itself off. So it seems to have some safety mechanicsm. I thought they introduced such protections a while ago, so you don't blow your chip up.

Am I wrong in thinking all of this? Can you still melt your chip in a system?

I am reading the temps off of BIOS and then when I am in win- the asus software. I think they call it Probe.

I did not apply any thermal paste or tape. I am using the retail heatsink kit that came with the chip. I belive it has some stuff built into it. It leaves some greyish residue on the chip, so there definately seems to be something. It isn't the best (so I read), but a top quality paste shouldn't bring down my temperature by 40C or wherever I should be reading. It should only affect several degrees. So I will definately worry about that after I get my machine down to an acceptable range.

Any feedback? I am certainly open for ideas here.

you need to use fresh paste after every time you reseat the heatsink.

and running without the heatsink usually wont kill it, but it's is by no means good for it and it very well can kill it, especially if it heats up faster then the throttle kicks in.

Your temps are over double what they should be, so obviously you haven't done something right. It's somewhat painful to hear you say things like:

Those last ones get me... I'm NOT trying to pick on you, but just need to learn before you mess up your hardware and blame someone else. Its like draining the oil and coolant from your car and then starting it, revving it to redline and popping it in gear and then blaming the car manufacturer. :stick: If you spend some time reading, you'll get a lot more out of this hobby and it will be much more enjoyable for you. I'd really hate to see you permanently damage anything and be out more $$$$.

Anyway, with that out of the way, it sounds like you need to clean your cpu and heatsink and start from scratch. You can buy one of those arcticlean kits or use alcohol... search on here for all that info. Be careful to follow the instructions exactly for installing the stock heatsink, and also proper application of thermal compound. Its a very precise and tight fit. I'm sure if you take a step back and do some reading up on the basics, you'll find what you need, and your temps will be much more reasonable.

Good luck dude, and for F***-sake be careful and don't run without some form of cooling for the CPU!! ;) :stick:

I have a question about voltages when overclocking...

Right now I have my E6300 stable at 3.22ghz, 460fsb, 1.350 vcore, 2.0 vdimm.

MCH and FSB voltages are both still at default, and the question is, if I am wanting to get a higher OC, do I need to set the MCH and/or FSB to a higher voltage first, or should I try upping the vcore again (don't really want to...heat is becoming an issue) or vdimm?
To summarize: what voltages should I increase first at this point to avoid unnecessary voltage increases to become stable at a higher frequency?

I can't really seem to find any solid info on what to do with the MCH and FSB voltages.

I had my E6600 booting at 400FSB/3600mhz, but to do that I had to up the vcore to 1.55 and it wasn't Orthos stable. What should I tweak to make that clock Orthos stable? This is on an eVGA 680i board with the latest BIOS. RAM is running at 400mhz @ 4-4-412. Currently the FSB is running at 1.4v, but because my northbridge isn't watercooled like my CPU, I am a little worried about raising it.

Every board is different but I use AUTO for everything except Vcore and Vdimm :)

So I did some further testing on my 680i, and it seems anything over FSB 375 or so starts to make Orthos unstable. Even if I put the FSB at 1.5v, and run a VCore of 1.5v, FSB's over 375 start to become stable. At multi 8 the system won't even boot at FSB 425 or above, and is shaky at 400.

I am starting to wonder if this is an issue with the 680i board, like a FSB wall I've hit, or if I just have something set wrong.

I'm at 3.6ghz 30 minutes orthos stable.

What are your various settings? Multi, FSB, VDimm, memory timings/clocks, etc? I am curious why I can't get my E6600 (which is a week 30) stable at 3.6ghz on the same board.

Looks like the eVGA nForce 680i boards have a Vdroop thats as bad as the Anus P5W and P5B Dlx boards :rolleyes: :slapass:

It's OK for being harsh. But please realize that I have been doing this for years. Of course, there are always things I can learn and this is my first Core2Duo system. But I didn't run my system into the ground. I strategically ran it without the heatsink to see if I could judge how hot the chip was running. So I could better determine if the mobo readings were wacked.

So moving on...I would love some more insight from you guys. I re-seated my heatsink onto my chip and ran some tests to see if they were reveiling at all. I did not re-apply any thermal paste (I was using the stuff that was pre-applied with the intel retail kit). So I do understand that my numbers will be increased, because this is not the proper way to do this. As you will see below, my numbers are still incredibly high. I wonder how much re-applying new thermal paste could actually help. at the very, very maximum 10C- no?

Under idle:
ASUS Probe: 59C
Core Temp v.94: Tjunction- 85C Core #0- 62C Core #1- 57C

For the full load test I used Winstress 1.5 set to 100% for about 5 minutes testing CPU, FPU and MMX:
The results leveled off at:
ASUS Probe: 82C
Core Temp v.94: Tjunction- 85C Core #0- 85C Core #1- 81C

Some more figures:
Mobo- ASUS P5B Deluxe
Chip- E6300 Core2Duo stock settings as follows per ASUS Prob:

It was weird that my Tjunction didn't move at all during this process- not once. Is this normal? And why was it always so high?

So what do you guys make of all these numbers? I can't imagine that new thermal paste will bring me under 60C with maximum load, and under 40C idle (those are about the normal Core Temp readings that I should expect- right? or am I off on those?)

What do I blame this on? My chip or mobo?
Are there other tests that I could run that would help you compare my system to where it should be?

Any insight at all would be helpful.

You'd be amazed at what good thermal paste can do. Your chip should be idling about 38C (where mine idles at with stock voltage, etc.). When I have my comp maxed while folding it hits about 58C max. When I first used my stock HSF, I tried the paste it came with, and I had to reseat and reapply mine as well. AS5 might just do the trick. Even if it were to take you down ten Degrees, you'd be idling about 45-48, which is still agreeable. Based on the info you posted, the Mobo doesn't appear to be overvolting your CPU or anything strange, seems normal enough. The Bios can sometimes read the temps a little high, although I thought the later Bios releases had fixed much of this. The temp of your chip seems to be dependant on the HSF at this point, so I'd take the time to reseat it again and redo the thermal paste. The simple fact that the temps came down a bit when you reseated it tells me the problem lies therein...

Take the Mobo out , CPU off , and INSPECT with a Magnifying Glass the mobo and socket for any anomaly - burnt colors , dirt etc .

The E6300 usually idles under Air at 30-35C ( ambient dependant ) .

If you can't get normal temps, replace the mobo , since it may fail and take more hardware down with it.

Ok. You are all pretty much screaming with great OC's.

This is what I've experienced. I'm using my second C2D/ The first was E6600: L628B368 and my second is L631A454. I got my fist up to 3600 easily on the setup in my sig. My second is seeming to be a different fish... I'm now at 2990 and it was a struggle with lots of tweeking. It seems that the B chip is taking less volts but is reluctant to go over 400 fsb.

What does the different batch numbers mean (L628B vs. L631A) and what are others experiences in switching CPU's?

Yea right - 61.4C in this case means a temperature measured in the geometric centre of the heatspreader. Coretemp reads the temperature using DTS, which max is 85C. So there's nothing wrong.
