Official GIGABYTE X38-DQ6/X38T-DQ6 Info/BIOS Thread

Last night my computer froze while I was gone from the house. When I tried to turn it back on it would attempt to boot and shut off. I narrowed the problem down to the memory slots. It seems that when memory is installed into either of the 2 right slots, the PC will not boot. I currently am running my ram in single channel, as this is the only way I can use both sticks. I have tried running just 1 stick in each of the said broken slots, and it just will not boot with memory installed into either of the 2 right memory slots.

Does anyone have any ideas if there is anything I can do? I think that an RMA may be required to fix this issue.

I know I sure did. I moved up to the Asus P5Q Deluxe and no more issues like that.. I even had the EX38-DQ6.

prob have to press cntrl+f1 while in main page of bios it will flash and you can go back into that screen and see it.

i dont think they will do anything for that board, it was a stepchild when it was released and it still is, which makes kinda sad, cause i own this board. :mad:

Have you tested each module individually to ensure it's not a faulty module as opposed to a faulty Ram Slot ??

Yes, I also tested with another set of memory (GEiL PC6400). These also would not work in the said ram slots.

mobo sounds pretty sick then :eek:

I already sent the board back for RMA. I wonder if I will get an x48-dq6 as an upgrade possibly, unless they have a bunch of EX38-dq6 laying around still.

Yeah, I tried that already. I spoke with a couple of guys there (one was supposedly the RMA supervisor), they said "Can't do it. It's against policy." I was pretty firm and they still wouldn't budge.

They kept claiming it was "RAM incompatability" issues. I was running my aXeram @ 1200 when on particular reboot "locked" those speeds in the BIOS. No amount of clearing CMOS or swapping RAM worked.

It's worth a try to get it going, but this kind of problems combined with their support has soured me on Gigabyte products.

And how is that going for you Richard? notice any performance increases? is it enabling higher 45nm clocks ect ect? Just curious as to know if the board is a leap and a jump ahead of the X38. Hows the 16 x 8 pci slots.

Tested it like 333 x 9 and mem to 1000 Mhz 266 strap, not woking, but when tested 400 x 8 to CPU and mem to 1000 same Mhz and setings but diferent mem divider, prime went ok 1+ hour. Looks like time to check F9D, before these I used F9A for my Q6600 and 4 x 1Gb memory @ 425 x 9 1:1 @ 4-4-4-8:up:

Hello. I haven't tested it, so far the 9b bios I'm using is acceptable. I'm waiting for a final version myself.
Also, for those with nvidia cards and driver version 177.26, there was a huge latency problem which i solved using forceware 177.83, without physx

I would say beware of F9F BIOS, all is bad with it! :( After some days when I powered PC on, I got BIOS corrupted, it wanted to recovery, but did not go anything farther. Powered off, then powered on and then it recovered successfully. I wanted to flash different BIOS, but didnt it, after few days PC woudnt post any more. Cycling all the time, leds on, after some secons off and then again on and off, all the time goes that!

After clearing cmos, changing memorys, VGA, CPU, removing/replacing all other hardware no luck to post again successfully. Looks like board is dead now :down: :shrug:

After all I packaged the board and sent it to shop for replacement, its in service now more than one week already. Looks like there is no X38 boards in stock anymore, so maybe time to check X48-DQ6? Maybe other board to recommend for 4 x 1Gb D9GMH DDR2 and Q6600 that can take 3.9 Ghz?

I am at my WITS END! PLEASE HELP! About a month ago I updated my bios to the most recent available on Gigabyte. It was fine for 1 reboot and then refused to post any longer. I sent it to Gigabyte and they sent my motherboard back to me immediately and said it posted just fine.

I was furious. I did my due diligence testing the motherboard pulling it out of case and firing it up on a bench. I escalated and was told I would be getting a brand new motherboard sent me to after sending it back.

I recieved the supposed new motherboard yesterday. It was in the wrong motherboard box and in a taped anti static bag. I shrugged this off and fired it up on my workbench and BAMN! I see the gigabyte screen. Success!

I put it in my case, am very careful and get things set to fire back up and then the problems start. Sometimes when I power it on it will post, sometimes it won't, I tried instaling vista and it had some kind of weird error just loading in to the installation screen about winload.exe not being able to be loaded. Then I get some crazy weird trap exception error messages in the bios screen. It was just white text on black background during the bios post. It completely froze and I rebooted again and now the damn thing just sits here turning on off on off every second. Everything just spins up and starts and it just powers off again and cycles.

I've tried using just one stick of memory and reconnecting everything carefully but it appears this motherboard is :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed.

Am I crazy or are these ass holes coninually sending me defective junk. It's been over a month that I have been down and I am being SERIOUS impacted by this and these guys are complete morons on the phone. I don't know what recourse I have. I paid 270 bucks for this ninemonths ago.

I feel totally screwed and I really don't have buckets of money to start buying new processors and powersupplies to try and rule thoseout. They are already high quality thermaltake modular 700watt psu and e8400 cpu six months old.

Any suggestions?

Disclaimer: I have been overclocking for years and fully understand bios settings, memory straps, etc and have this sucker set up to basically failsafe settings.

This just happened to me. Ive had the board for 4 months with no problems. Today it suddenly reverts to default fsb settings. No matter what I set, the board keeps booting at an fsb of 266mhz for my q6600. Any ideas? This isnt a stability problem, it wont even let me underclock the chip.

It happened today with the f9a bios. Updating to the f9d bios doesn't help.

Guys, If you pull out you cmos battery, can you boot?
use the clr cmos jumper on the board as well.
do you have any spare ddr2's you can use, buy some cheap ddr2 and test it then return 'em to your reseller, or borrow from a friend.
if you are getting errors booting up os, run memtest from boot disk and make sure you can pass tests 5 and 7 if you can get it to boot that is

I think the following info could be very useful
sounds like your primary and backup bios could be corrupted
and there might also be corruption on bioses on hdd

So if you can find your motherboard installation cd, put that in your cd-rom drive and try booting.
Always make sure your bios settings are rebooted on failsafe defaults before flashing to a new bios, ie. NO OVERCLOCK when flashing!!!

I've tried all the tricks with pulling the battery, pulling the ram out, shorting the connectors under the battery, resetting the cmos.

It posted about 3 times ok (when it first arrived)and then splashed this crazy looking characters and errors during post and refuses to post since.

This is the 2nd board they have sent me. The 1st one was DOA, this 2nd one at least posted a couple times and now it is dead. I am furious with gigabyte and this quality control. They are checking in to sending me an X48 supposedly but once again I need to send them this board back over a week and wait another week for whatever new crap board they send me.

No matter what I do this thing just endlessly reboots. It's been 7 weeks and now they want me to wait another 2 weeks for 1 way shipping each way of this board and a new board.

When does this become unacceptable service? What as a consumer are my options? I don't want this gigabyte junk anymore. I want my money back so I can buy a better quality board from a better quality manufacturer....

I feel so helpless.

I've been reading this thread since the start can people please post up there settings in bios which bios they are using and i will try to help them.

So, is this thread now dead? Or does anyone know why the F9F bios puts the auto core voltage to 1.55 on a q6700 when you overclock it even the slightest? With the old F7 it actually used to vary the voltage depending on how high you set the fsb. Just me perhaps?

F5G and F5H if i remember were good ones for quads and higher ddr2 speeds
i'm on F9F but everything's on manual in bios
why do we keep updating our bioses? when the new ones are mostly about new cpu compatibility?
hoping for higher fsb better clocks with less juice but that's not gonna happen

bios matured nicely at about F5 release for quads everything after gave no gains at all really

Sounds, like a plan. I'll check out the F5 bioses if I can find em. Definitely gonna go back to atleast F7 though. Also now that I've run into a wall with this Q6700 I think I'm gonna swap it out for my original Q6600 that I put in my girl's machine. I don't know why but I never even tried to overclock that thing, guess I just wanted a 10x multi, but that turned out to be a bust.

It has an index with some overclocked bios settings for you to try (using a Q6600).

Also I would only look at bios release F9D and later.

Anyone have suggestions for getting my E8400 at around 4.3 stable?

I'm using the latest X38-DS4 bios, all the others act the same. So i'm not sure if this is user error, or im maxing out the board.

But anything above ~480+ FSB needs the performance level for my ram at 10 or above (should be 7 (using 2.00B strap)). And i cannot get anything stable because of it, I've played with FSB voltage, ram, cpu, MCH and nothing changes. Orthos always fails at around 5 minutes. Board limits maybe?

Anyone have suggestions?

With my "low voltage" chip, i'd like to get more out of it. :shrug:

Just for the record, have you tried loose timings and say 6x480 to 500fsb just to see that the board and cpu can cope with high fsb?

May have to set nb voltage high.

im on f7 bios ive changed IRQ assignment from auto to irq 5 in the bios reinstalled card but in the control panel of xp it is still on IRQ 19 with lots of other things like gigabyte gbb36x controller universal host controller etc....

Actually, i haven't tried dropping the multi yet. Though i have added a fan to my NB and jacked the voltage up on it. Its helped moderately, but nothing that screams that its the issue. :shrug: What timings would i try, they are 5-5-5-12 now.. so i should try 6-6-7-15?

Also, anyone running crossfire have problems with the board reading the slave cards temperature half of what it really is? My 3870s done this too, like the second card is running 40c, it tells me its 20c. Which is right obvious that its wrong... :shrug:

really noobish question but what do I set bios boot order to to boot of a flash drive on X38-DQ6? want to create a custom windows pe installation flash drive :shrug:and use it to install vista/update and programs in one go

I believe you should select USB-HDD for it to work.

Okay here is my problem:- with the same strapping i cannot get a stable FSB of 325. I can boot into windows, but when running orthos, the PC crashes. Sometimes after 20 minutes of stress testing and sometimes after about an hour of stress testing. Tried playing around with the CPU and MCH clock skew (200ps-300ps) , no luck.

Another interesting fact is that even if i drop the CPU multiplier to x6, comp does not POST at anything above 335 FSB. I fail to understand this. Is my memory limiting me or is it the CPU itself ? The E4500 is designed to run at 800FSB.

My aim is to run a stable OC at 3.3 GHz.....pls help if possible.

Another question , is it possible for me to use a DQ6 stable BIOS for the DS5 ? as they are essentially the same board ?

Can I get a recap on some of the known good 2x2g (4g kit) overclockinf RAM on this mobo? I found most average PC2-9600 to just be no better then just overclocking good DDR1066. I'm OK w/ 1155MHz if I can stay at cl5.

Where u find this bios? On official site gigabyte is only F9f.

Can someone help me out with a problem... i flashed to F9f beta when i put a Q9550 on my X38-DQ6, but when i try to install vista it simply refuses to use the RAID array created on the intel controller...

Switching CPU's to my old E4500 and BIOS version F8 the Vista install works without a problems, so a question, can i run the Q9550 on the F8 BIOS?? because gigabyte's webpage says it doesn't and i don't really wanna try swapping out CPU's and reflashing my BIOS all the time...

The RapidShare link for that new BIOS isn't working for me, anyone else? It brings me to a RapidShare Error page.

The latest official BIOS is F9f, and is available at the Gigabyte's web-site.

But if you refer to the BIOS Mod posted here by mister_no just a few posts above then I've looked everywhere, and asked everyone I knew about that BIOS but no one knows where it's coming from, what's the source, and who is the author, it's possible that mister_no made it himself and hosted it.

The problem is that he hosted it on RapidShare and that he doesn't have an account there, so the file could be downloaded ten times until the link died out. He then hosted it again on RapidShare, but once more after ten downloads it's dead, so there's probably around twenty people around with that BIOS.

I've PM'ed mister_no almost two weeks ago but he never replied, he probably almost never come to this forum. If he does come back and reads this I'd certainly like to ask him to re-host that file and upload it somewhere else than on RapidShare (their free services suck, period).

Hi all, i am a noob with this processor(QX9650 and GA-X38-DS5 bios 7d). i want to oc it to 4g or more if possible but i can not get it stable, now it is 3.8(400x9.5) with 1.375 vcore in bios but when i run prime95 i get errors of expected 0,0004 get 0,004999 .
Also have 8 gb of adata vitesta extreme 1066 5 5 5 18 @ 1066 v 2.2 (memory specifications uses 2.1-2.3)
Temps may not be a problem since as i am watercooled

Hmm. Did you try higher FSB speeds?

The board should be able to support them. Also, relax the timings as much as possible on your memory.

I'll keep this short. I am trying to find the setting in the bios to disable HyperThreading. Nothing that fits that description. Hyperthreading is not the setting " CPU Multi Threading " is it ?? Thanks

or you might try this ? I UNBRICKED IT!! tht was from an x48T, but I did the same with a p45 extreme, after a bad flash, the x38 should be the same.

I had same problen(Q9550) 8x449@1.35v is 8h OCCC stable but 8x450 not boot . I have tried raise MCH voltages etc. Mem running 890. i using newest bios version.

I've been having issues with the Lan controller on this board. Sometimes, the OS would lock after start or a long session download, and following reboot, the controller would disappear from both Device Manager in Windows, and Integrated Devices page in BIOS. Only solution I found was to load the fail-safe defaults in BIOS, completely stop the system, unplug the PSU, wait a few minutes, then boot, enter BIOS, set custom settings. After this, the controller is again present.

I am using BIOS F9b and normally, I use the second controller.

Dakkahun, that prob is in my x48-DQ6 too. Have read of others with this as well. Flaky network adapter disappears and reappears for no obvious reason. Once, tried installing old network card but no drivers found for vista, rebooted and onboard network was back anyway. Suspect only permanent cure is a separate network card.

I'm still using f8d on my x38 DQ6. I notice I am really FSB limited. Also I can't find the setting for Speed Step in my BIOS. Even with ctrl-F1 I only have C1e and Thermal monitoring. And can not get CPU-z to recognize my q9550 as running at 8.5 even with Prime runnning all 4 cores for an hour.

Should I try the new F9J? I have 2x2G Corsair Dominator 1066. It will not even run at spec on some straps. I can get the CPU to pass all Prime running at 3.77 at 2.25v with the ram waay underclocked. I can run the RAM at stock 333 strap with the CPU running:( stock, but no matter what voltage I run through both I can't even get 3.77 stable with RAM at stock - 5-5-5-15, let alone pushing the CPU to 4.0.:shrug:

I tried adding .1 to PCIE, .15 to FSB, any thing to MCH and computer won't boot. I even set GTLref to +3%.

You think a flash to new BIOS will help - or just time to upgrade to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...358-_-Product?

I used to run 8x400=3200 stable and perfect all day. Today my PC wouldn't post randomly. I take out the CMOS battery and it reset my mobo settings. I tried to set everything back to the way I had them. I'm 99% sure I got them exactly the same. Now, I can overclock at all. As soon as I even enable "CPU Host Clock Control" and then save/restart, my system reboots/crashes and goes to default settings. It posts and then when it's doing the "memory test" when the PC starts up, it crashes and reboots. The system works fine and is stable if I leave everything on auto and don't overclock. I want my 3.2 ghz back and not 2.4...

What could be causing this? I've been googling for hours with no result. My default ram timings are 5-5-5-15. I've tried putting it all on auto. I've tried putting it to 5-5-5-15, 5-5-5-18, and 6-6-6-18 manually and nothing works.

I ran memtest and I didn't get any errors, I think my ram is fine.

I did discover something, it seems if I unplug all my USB devices besides my mouse and keyboard it passes the memory test and boots fine at my set overclock. I have a USB Headset, several USB external hard drives, etc...

I've had USB things plugged in and overclocked fine for almost 2 years now. Should I just try a different firmware version? What firmware version do you suggest? I have tried the latest beta BIOS (F9J) and I am on F5H right now with no luck.

The fact that unplugging some USB devices allows you to overclock suggests that it's a power issue, that the MB cannot supply the required power for the overclock with these extra consumers. Consider that after 2 years of overclock, the MB components are now aged, and may not perform to spec.

What could I do to fix this issue without buying any new hardware? Give certain parts or settings in the BIOS more voltage?

Do you have access to a more powerful PSU for some tests?
