Last night I broke it down and removed what thermal paste I had on there reseated and tightened it down a little more this time it fealt like it was more solid. I haven't had a chance to boot and check temps though.

if it's still showing me high 40s idle and 50s load I am pretty sure its of by several degrees (+ - 10)

SiLA, it depends of the room temperature but arround 38º C with 24º C in my office room.

As for the IHS from the 9xx family I think it's almost impossible to remove them, because they are soldered do the cores.

hmm ok ty very much

so this pentium d are really hot in full load..big jump of temp...never had those warm cpu on amd :(
like 4/5°C of difference on idle/full :(

Yes they are.

And the bad quality of the IHS doesn't help too. :(

that's why i wanted to remove it :(

but i guess all i can do is avoid the warranty just to make it looks like jsut normal copper

You are talking about lapping the IHS ! Yes that's the solution.

Try to sharp it with a file.

you can remove the IHS. just use a low heat butan torch on the top of the ihs and make sure you cut the glue first.


heat it up a little bit and pop it off.

my Asus P5W DH will arrive tomorrow. Im also getting a Pentium D 930 from frys to play with. LOL its cheaper than Pentium D 920 :D :D

BTW what kidna clock can i expect from Pentium D 930 with Bigtyphoon, and vcore to prolly 1.35V 1.4V

expect @vcore def from 4ghz to 4,2

change of plans i just got the 920 for $140 USD in frys. with Bigtyphoon how far should i go?? for 24/7. im doing 3.36Ghz at 240Mhz fsb 1.4 vcore now. I think this can go higher . @ 3.36Ghz the temp is around 40 to 42c idl and prolly 50c at load when i run pi 32m (didnt finish 32m cuz i had soo much stuff to install).

like 3.7 , 3.8GHz at 1.4vcore ??

EDIT: well at 3.73GHz 266fsb 1.415vcore. idle temp is around 42,43c and pi 32m is like 54c. about 52c when playing FEAR. maybe i could go higher since my room temp is 23c.

EDIT2: boy, i hope Asus AI Booster is accurate... or report higher temp.

I'm having trouble booting my 930 with more than 294mhz FSB on Asus P5WD2-E and 1:1.
I have 1.3v for FSB and 2.1v for Ram, CPU on 1.45v
Using H20 cooling for cpu and NB has swiftech fan bolted to it.
Using 601 bios.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks jVIDIA, but the MCH is already on 1.55v. I think it might be the mobo.

nice 930 u have there anyway jVIDIA with 1,43vcore i can run at "only" 4600(307x15) mhz :(

I have to clockgen up to that speed. CPU is acting very messed up. Here are a list of symptoms:

1) SP2004 large FFTs fails at stock settings within 4-6 seconds
2) Clockgenning up, i start failing applications in the 3.7x range... 3.85 Ghz at stock volts and i get restarts.
3) Booting past 250 FSB i run into a condition where programs like prime & Sp2004 crash instantly, they don't even begin to run. Also games are messed up, CSS runs at double speed. I cannot figure it out.
4) Booting up at < 250 FSB and clockgenning up, i am unable to get stable anywhere near anticipated.
4.4 Ghz requires over 1.5 volts, 4.5 Ghz requires 1.575 volts set in the bios and some things will randomly crash (SoB in particular). Anything over 4.5 Ghz, even with plenty of volts gives me crashes and restarts. SoB, Firefox, Explorer, everything will crash and dual load will restart it.
I can provide screenshots of all these things, cept CSS.

CPU is watercooled.

Everything other than the CPU was tested on a Celeron 336 and everything else is good... ram was underclocked for everything above. Tried different ratios, no succes. Tried different BIOSes, no success.

lapped my cpu and gained around 7°C in full load

dual prime stable 3.8GHz air cooling with bigtyphoon. i will get tower 120 once its availible. Hoping to get 3.6Ghz on E6600. This board is pretty good. I like the timing change.

i cna boot at 3.8Ghz. Have not tried any higher. In BIOS, vmch, vfsb were +0.2v and vdimm 2.1v, vcore was like 1.55 (1.46 , 1.48 actual ) i think. during load the vcore osmetiems drop to 1.42.
