Aaaaaaand... failure. :( I think I'll fish up a thermometer and check teh temps of some potentially hot areas and see what's going on. Then I'll probably add heatsinks to the aforementioned chips. Anything else I should try before I tear the mobo out of the case?Quote:

I tried adding more, more powerful fan to blow across the mobo to no avail. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and throw heatsinks everywhere. I'll report back when the deed is done.

maybe this is a little bit offtopic but i hope u can still helping me...
now its the third time that I upgrading my system.First i build xeon cruncher (Mainboard Asus PC-DL with Vcore+Vmem mod running together with 2X Xeon 1,6Ghz LV@3 Ghz)
then I upgraded the system (new CPUs Xeon 2,4Ghz with 1Mb L3 Cahce M0 Stepping) but was little bit dissapointing (running only @3,2Ghz possible with Vcore 1,6V)
now I planning to upgrade again. I got a cheap Asus Mainboard (NCCH-DL)
and a pair of Xeons 3,4Ghz with 1Mb L2Cahce (SL7PG E0 Corestepping). lets see how far they can go :-) but even in standard clock they are fast enought for me.
The reason why I upgrading again is because the CPUs and the VRM of my old system got too hot when running at 100% load. even with high quality cooler the cpus reached throttling when running the system for many hours.
Now my question... cause the poor Asus support couldn´t answer my
question :-(
Does this Mainboard (NCCH-DL) supporting the EIST (Enhanced Intel Speed Step Technology) function ? This function is called DBS (Demand Based Switching) for xeon CPUs.
When the system is not running with high load the cpu clock goes down to 2,4Ghz. Is this working with this mainboard ? Is any special bios necessary ?
Its possibel to SUPPORT the feature you'll need to flash your bios to a new version (sorry but can't be botherd to look it up right now)
But the Xeons should work just fine in the board. but as I said without a biosupgrade its possible that the DBS doesn't work (or IEST... whatever you want to call it)

where to get this specialbios ? at the asus website its only version 1005 available for NCCH-DL. and it looks like that EIST (or DBS) ist not working with this bios.

the hcf's came with mounting hardware for socket 478 (or something like that) do i just broke off the ends and mounted the heat sinks to em.

Will the Dynatron H67 heatsink ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835114022 ) fit ok on the PC-DL?
I was wondering if this Xeon cruncher was still a good way to go or are there better alternatives for similar cost. I noticed this topic started a year or so ago and parts are probably harder to find now.
Second question is that Im interested in trying to help out in other areas besides F@H. Im curious as to which are the most popular or which need the most help right now. It seems that there are many different folding options and some of them seem to be for the same causes.
one last thing; sorry guess its 3 part; how do I know if my current systems are folding to their full potential. Ive been folding for about a month now and do not seem to be making much progress. granted I started folding for a different team, have had problems with systems, and changing systems a bit, but I think Im back on track now. just seems like it take a long time and I dont get many points. It could just be me and Im new to the folding scene anyway. lately it seems like it takes 2-3 days to finish a wu. been getting 2124's and 2125's, but this time I got 2126. It just seems like others with similar systems are getting a lot more points. or possibly its because they use more systems; im not sure.

Hey INFRNL :wave: I'd say a DX still makes a fine cruncher at the right price. Even a top flight DX (talking socket 603/4 here) won't perform like the C2D or opty 170 you already have, but there's still something majestic about the DX imo. Those units on f@h (212x) are a PITA and there's not much we can do to avoid them. Everyone has had a spell where they just get one after the other, me included. The tide will change eventually mind you :)

I´ve used your mod and it worked great. I finally got it to work @ 3.2GHz without any problem. A bit noisy though.
Now. I got a pair of New pair of XEON 2.8G S604/1M/533 SL8GU LV stashed and a NCCH-DL coming soon. I wonder, will your U-wire method (B2-B3, C2-C3 and D2-D3 need a u-wire) descibed in this article work on the SL8GU cpu´s or do I have to do it another way ?
