A 4.4 Ghz I7 980 might manage, but I was checking 3 way SLI GTX 680 benchmarks earlier and it looked far too disappointing on a 3.8 Ghz X58 CPU, and my 24/7 clock is 3.875 Ghz @ stock volts on mine (I hate increased heat output for 24/7 use).
I was just doing loads of research in advance in case GTX 690 prices tumble, but without a current high end SB CPU + X79 system, its really not worth going 3 way SLI. I could still get a 690 and sell the 680 I just got today though.
