Yes, Patsburg is the codename for the chipset(s) based on X79, Waimea Bay platform. SATA6 and SAS are indeed confirmed on as many as 10 ports, Intel went all the way this time around.
Still, lack of USB3 is a major step back in my opinion. I can live without it for now, but this should last for a few years still, like X58 did. Also, PCIe lanes instead of PCIe 3.0, even if they were crippled like in our chipsets, just half the speed. But at least they should be PCIe 3.0 to be future proof.
Anyway, let's wait and see.
Regarding mem, I very much doubt those 2666MHz, it's spec'ed at 1600MHz if I'mnot mistaken, maybe some mobs will go as high as 2400MHz but 2666? Seriously! And if you consider that 4 sticks will load the controller heavilly, forget it.

I hope as the enthusiats for this mobo are in the correct way cause this is a Extreme edition with support for USB 3.0 too.
About mem at quad core settings and the rate 2666 MGHz and above is neccesary for a change at the extreme Dimension.
This Gygabite UD3 shows that and Intel x79 last assembly at the final release will have all the new tech needed to be a Extreme Edition as Intel knows.

This mobo was shown on Computex, one of the 12. Not that I don't think that Gigabyte knows how to make boards but I wouldn't buy them for myself.
They have finally understood that Extreme boards need to be black! Still too flashy for me though. Nothing designed on that side of the world will take my money.
What I'm really eager to see is Intel's own take on the X79, the Siler and Thorsby.
Anyway, as I said, if the specs are correct and final, I guess I'll pass this one too. Skip to the next iteration. Anyway, time for tweaking is not much right now.

Still, I'll believe 2666 when I see it. Anyway, quad channel even at 2133 (which is not uncommon today) will give you enough bandwidth for any application today, no proc will starve for data.
Next year DDR4 will raise the bar in terms of speed, new platform needed again :-)
As for USB3, anyone can slap a NEC/Renesas controller in a mobo. I was hoping Intel would support it in the chipset, I don't think that would be hard since IB will come out right after and the companion chipsets (7 series, Z77/5, H77, Q77/5, B75) already support it. And those PCIe 2.0 lanes should have been PCIe 3.0 already. And also PCI should be dead already, why go back if SNB doesn't already. Those are the only gripes I have with X79.
On the other hand, SAS is cool although hardly used on the desktop machines.
Have you guys also seen the news on Larrabee? Or should I say the Knight's Bridge project. It's only oriented fo HPC now but it seems to go well. Intel has already released some pics of a PCIe boad it will give CUDA a run for it's money it seems. No GPU based on it expected though. Intel engineers don't exactly excel on software and driver development.
On another note, for the first time BITS was first released on Intel than on their own page. Well, not exactly. Just noticed that although the main page doesn't show it, v438 is already available there on the download page.

For the Efficient Performance Server market, the Platform is called Romley-EP, Patsburg+Sandy Bridge-EP, for 1 and 2 socket. For 4 sockets there is the Romley-EP 4S.
Wow, PCI SIG has plans to release (specs in mid 2013) a cabled version of PCIe (4 lanes PCIe 3.0, 32Gbps), to replace Thunderbolt (over 3x faster today, TB will be 50Gbps in 2015), USB 3.0 and eSATA. The funny thing is PCIe is the underlying structure (bus) for these controllers. The idea is to eliminate the protocol overhead of these protocols and make PCIe itself an interconnect. It can even supply 20W of power for any devices. The connector will be compact and flat to fit even in notebooks and tablets.

Yes, this is a Tesla competitor and Intel has already sent out I believe 130 of these babies to developers. The major argument for Intel is that it's still x86, so any app already existing will be easy to port. While for Tesla you need to deep into CUDA. I believe CUDA is very C'ish (haven't digged into it however) which is piece of cake for any programmer, but still you need to develop from ground.
I have a great respect for Intel, and I'll always buy Intel instead of anything else if I can, but I'd get rid of x86 in a flash. We're using decades old tech (with some updates of course) for the sake of compatibility and I think it's holding everything back.
I'll take your word for it regarding Siler, but all info out points in the other direction. Unless you're referring to external controllers, which for me doesn't make sense anyway. It's not that Intel doesn't have the means to do it, I know they are always the last to adopt new stuff but that's the way for big outfits (I work for one), but it kinda disappoints.
Imagine the power inside that box in the last pic, 8 Knight's Bridge boards. Each contains 50 simple x86 cores based off P54. This is MIC (Many Integrated Core) tech from Intel and it might be the future.
I couldn't find info regarding the interface, if it's already PCIe 3.0 or 2.0, I believe still the latter for now.
There are quite a few articles out there abut this (read some a while back, don't know if anything new has come up) and the performance attainable in the near future.
This was quite a chalenge in design, I remember the cores are connected by a low latency ring bus.
I wonder if they used RISC cores (maybe Itanium based) instead. Awesome. But that would make compatibility with x86 (and the whole point of using these cores for easy porting) difficult or impossible. I remember the problems of running existing soft on Itanium, low performance due to emulation made it be dumped by some manufacturers.

Intel engineers go a different route than the taiwanese makers, regarding phase count. What they do is in fact engineering, not marketing bull**it using trillions of power phases to hide the design deficiencies.
They get the same or better power delivery behaviour then other designs, better thermals.
Also, they'll start using different (better) components.
That will eventually come with a $$$ premium.
Come out of hiding Siler. Intel is keeping it under wraps quite well, I believe they really want to dazzle everyone with it.
nVidia taped out Kepler, the 28nm successor to 40nm Fermi. It seems we might see GF6xx by the end of the year already. AMD also seems to be on track with their 28nm offering.
Mass avail maybe next year only.

Yes, disappointing indeed. Still,mayb it's for a good reason, and they're doing some last minute tweaking! But I guess it's just a business move though. They have nothing to fear from the other camp so why rush it?!
Maybe they're updating the chipset with all the goodies that are missing at the moment, but I don't believe they'll go for significant silicon changes right now.
Let's hope they deliver a great platform for the next couple of years.
Intel, please ditch PCI already, save the silicon for USB 3.0 and PCIe 3.0 instead. By then, I'll go for it!!!

I assume those UEFI shots are from an Ivy Bridge CPU, looking at the cache sizes.
CPU-Z seems to not detect yet the IB CPU, but I guess this one is not in the same league as the also tested i5-2400, mostly lower scores, which should not happen with equivalent procs. It's only a dual core CPU vs the quad SB.
Also, GFX are different, IB seems to use integrated graphs and SB is using GTX580, which could explain the MAXON scores.
Still, very promising indeed.
If you get a shot of an 2011 SB-E, that would be cool!
My eys might be tricking me, but I see a difference of 2 pins between IB and SB and not only one, as socket 1155 and socket 1156 suggest. Is it just me?

Each with a new SATA RAID option ROM version. Funny though that the latest flash in UEFI (v10.6.0.1091) is not the same as the software version available (v10.6.0.1002).
The same goes to the Management Engine versions.

Did you guys knew that SB already supports PCIe 3.0 out of the box? It seems Intel ommited this fact from the spec sheet since there was no hardware to go with it at the time.
Now that it's coming maybe we'll hear about it.
Board makers are already taking advantage of it.
Also, early next year new families of graphics cards are coming out (guess not this year anymore for nVidia at least, for AMD who knows though yield issues are with TSMC).
News regarding SB-E, trouble for Intel it seems.
They might end up releasing it this year after all, but with some disabled features. Come on Intel, just drop it when it's ready, don't throw out unfinished products.

The newest I can get to work is 10.6.1091, but I have rolled back to 10.1.1008 as that was what I had issued in a BETA BIOS from ASUS and it appeared to work best on my RE.

Don't get so hung up on Sandy Bridge. The things that bother you will not rear their heads in a very short time. SNB is still many times better than the competition and the last generation.

Unfortunatelly, BoneTrail was forgotten and the SATA RAID option ROM built into the BIOS is rather old. Can't blame Intel for dropping it, old stuff doesn't last long these days.
djs, SNB is great I guess, I'm kinda holding for SNB-E though but so far it's not what I hoped it was. Still, i7-3960X being 47% on average faster than i7-990X is great.
Those 47% seem a bit high as an average. Some apps do get twice or more as fast on SNB-E, mostly those that use the extra mem bandwidth and new AVX instructions. The others will have a somewhat more conservative 10-15% increase I guess. Guess Intel picked the benchmarks that best suited them for it, like everyone does for that matter.
For those who use it, and it's quite good for a free app, MS Security Essencials has an update for v2.1.
nVidia has a new beta driver of the new 280 series (280.19) without even getting WHQL'ed 275.50 beta. Morons! Funny how there seems to be nothing really new however.

I think its time for me to get these issues resolved. None of the usb ports on my DX48BT2 system seems to work with mass storage devices (bluetooth receivers, RF receivers they all work fine). Everytime I attach a mass storage device like a usb flash drive, it comes up with new hardware found and tries to install drivers and eventually gives a message error installing drivers.
Coming to esata ports, when ever I connect an external hard drive enclosure to my esata port, it hangs the system and then eventually bluescreens. I have updated all my drivers to the latest versions.

I guess this could be a silly question, but have you checked that your mass storage devices can be powered by the port alone? Or have you connected an external power supply?
All is enabled in BIOS?
Is XP also updated to SP3? I believe the original version wouldn't support esata.
Maybe you could try installing 7 on a spare disk or something, just to rule out OS problems.
Or maybe you have a defective board, but it's odd to be only USB and eSATA.
Can't remember if this board has USB port fuses, for over-current protection.

Funny to see FireWire mentioned on the Z77 boards, I wonder if Intel has built it into the chipset, now that almost no one uses it. Kinda going against their TB push though.

SB-E will be shiped without a cooler. It seems Intel will offer their own branded coolers as a separate part. Guess everyone will go for a 3rd party cooler then.
Quad-core 3820 will come later than 3930K and 3960X.
Also TDP of 130W sees to be on paper only, more like 180W go up in heat for these babies. A PSU design guide so hints anyway.
It seems als that a cold bug exists in early samples of SB-E, so LN2 guys - tough luck. It might be fixed now as stepping C1 seems to be the final version to be shipped.
Prices for SB-E confirmed, same as for last generation: 294USD, 583USD and 999USD.

It seems there might have been issues with SATA Option ROM v11 as Intel has posted a BIOS update 0029 for DZ68DB going back to v10.6, while 0027 already had support vor v11.0.
Intel seems to be having a lot of issues latelly.
They also finally posted a firmware update for their 320 SSDs to fix the 8MB problem. Took them a while also.
Shoot, a couple of days ago I was browsing Intel's page and I found a board matrix pdf with future X79 and Z68 Extreme boards mentioned there.
Didn't save the pdf at the time and now I can't find it anymore. Siler DX79SI and Thornston DX79TO were mentione there, as well as a DZ68?? (can't remember the code name) belonging to the Extreme Series.
Either I can't remember where I found it exactly or the removed it. I only found an earlier board matrix without those.

IB will be best overall in price/performance but SB-E will be like LGA1366, just the very high end. Right now there will be three SB-E CPUs, a quad core with a locked multiplier starting at $294, a 6 core with a unlocked multiplier starting at $580ish and then a Extreme 6 core for $999. Those are 1Ku tray prices so they will be a bit higher.
SB-E will have higher overall performance, support for dual PCIe 2.0, quad channel DDR3 etc while IB will have 22nm 2 8x PCIe 2.0 and dual channel ddr3.
SB-E is due November this year, IB will be out probably Feb/Mar 2012.

Yes, that info has benn available for a while now. Only thing to correct is that both support PCIe 3.0 out of the box, it seems even SB also does only Intel didn't mention it!
I was really looking forward to X79 but it doesn't seem so sweet now, I believe Intel could have done much better after so long in development. Some things don't make a lot of sense for the desktop market, although this chipset is designed for workstation/server as well, but still I would have made it different.
Anyway, guess I'll skip this one too or wait for a revision.
I'm eager to see Siler still, maybe they make a good job with it.

SB-E and DX79SI/TO will be launched on November 15th. That's 2 months away. Funny how so little info has leaked by now.
Still it seems no native USB 3.0 support, I guess since Intel is rushing it out there was no time to add it. Maybe in another (future) stepping, or the harware is ready and it's only a driver issue yet.
This is going to be some Xmas, AMD FX or Intel SNB-E, AMD MD7000 and maybe (though not likely) nVidia GTX600 (availability only Q1-2012 for sure, tape out Q4-2011).
Man, is this gonna be a hell of a year end or new year 2012!

The names were out already for a while, and the cooling solution was already mentioned that would come only as an option, not supplied with the proc. I'm not sure who will buy an Intel cooler, but it looks good and maybe I will. Everybody's going liquid these days, AMD will supply also a liquid cooler with FX.
Does this look like Corsair's setup? It's good for skt 2011, 1366, 1156 and 1155.
The Siler looks good but it seems I see USB 3.0 connectors, just bellow the first connector (which I can't recognise although it seems an optical audio connector, but that's an odd place for it).

OK, seen those pics at IDF, and some more. Siler has a skull also, don't like it much. Also a PCI slot (Intel come on, loose it already), POST display, power on and reset onboard switches, 90 deg SATA connectors, but the first back connector puzzles me. Forget it, I believe it's the Reset BIOS button.

Something is fishy here, reports claim that the 2nd LAN port is driven by a Realtek controller. I've heard before that it was also an Intel controller, but lower speced one. Intel using Realtek? That would be funny.

Paty, I had seen those numbers but take those with a grain of salt.
Those are only the ones Intel wants you to see, marketing trick. Everybody else does it too.
Thse numbers are SPEC and Sandra synthetics, they take advantage of extra mem bandwidth (remember quad channel) and the newer AVX. If you see the whole graphs you will realise that on average the difference is around 10-15%, which is also great none the less.
Yes, Buldozer seems a good CPU but I don't think it will play in the same league as i7-3xxx SB-E. To spoil the party Intel will launch at the same time as Buldozer the i7-2700K, a beast. Buldozer however just hit 8.429GHz on liquid Helium the other day (long ago that is but AMD only now disclosed it).

Can't say for sure if there are problems.
Until we see some hardware out there for testing, which oddly enough there hasn't been (Intel managed to contain ES leaks?!), we need to wait. It seems SB-E will draw a lot of power when pushed to the limits, up to 180W (overclocked and overvolted, I guess), which makes the Intel (Asetek) liquid cooler not so enthusiast friendly (good for 130W only, so why bother have it?).
Still, there were issues with stepping C0 but Intel is already on C1 for some time now, which addresses known problems, I've heard.
Not long until we start seeing some of those puppies out there, I hope.
No i still didn't try, not much interested in it. But Manel, if you're still an owner of dx38bt you may wish to play with it :p: Probably other will be interested to join party, as well.Quote:

Are you sure our boards (DX38BT) have x64 UEFI already? Because I can't find it writen anywhere.
Well that guy wrote "There is no AHCI", so i suppose he may meant one of two things: either one can't boot shell module from GPT partition using SATA drive in AHCI mode, or can't boot OS from any partition using drive in same mode from the shell itself. Yes, I had forgotten about this. The translation is terrible though, can't understand half of it.
Still, I believe that our BIOS only has UEFI boot support, for larger than 2.2GB drives, it's not a full UEFI implementation, not sure though.

X79 is still a bit disappointing to me though, Intel could have done much better. It looks a rushed port from the server chipset.
Oo, trouble for Intel it seems. VT-d is broken for SB-E on C1 stepping. C2 only to come out next year it seems. VT-d makes hardware acceleration available to VMs.
Will Intel go ahead anyway with C1, which should be sampling already? Bad move I'd say.

I'm curious to see Intel XTU for these babies, I'm hoping there will be an UEFI implementation very similar to XTU, hope Intel won't disappoint. Although, they don't seem very good at it still.
I guess, since support for Win8 was already confirmed, UEFI v2.3.1 is in order, because of Secure Boot, and I believe Intel will go for it.
OK, DX79SI and DX79TO already on Intel's page with BIOS 0200, 0218 and 0248 dated as back as 23.08.2011, why only posted now? Reading the readme file they are all pre-production BIOSes, or UEFI we hope.
The TO has an additional TPM driver, I thought the SI was the most complete board, workstation class. OK, the TO must be business oriented so the TPM module.

Something funny: 2 newer boards came up at Intel based off Z68 chipset: the BC now has 6 BIOS versions, all numbered sequencially from 0020 to 0025. That's a first for Intel, or anyone else I believe. Several XTU optimisations, and the required (?!) MS OEM Activation 3.0 for Win8.
Another thing funny, the ZV doesn't even have a BIOS released.

I'm no Apple fanboy, I own nothing made by Apple really. But credit is due to the man who talked everyone into the hype. To me he was in fact a visionary and an important trend setter in the IT world.
Some will say that he was too much of a control freak. I, for one, share his point of view, I liked his ba**s when it was time to cut with the legacy and move forward.
Our PC world keeps living with compatibility in mind and because of it things never really have the chance to evolve. I know how important compatibility is to businesses but still I liked his attitude, future minded.
My respects to him, may he rest in peace now.

I'm affraid that was before Intel had issues and I guess only in a new revision later on we'll get the full specs. For now, you'll have do without the Uplink and some SATA ports and SAS.
The processors had issues too.
So long to come up with a "new" extreme/enthusiast platform and guess what?! Intel screwed up again big time.
For me, PCI should have gone already. All 6 series live well without it, 7 series seems to be a step back although PCI is not available in Z77 and Z75 to come with Ivy.
X79 is really not an enthusiast platform anyway, it's a workstation chipset that Intel rebadged to look like a worthy successor to X58, amd failled miserablly at it in my opinion.
I'll skip this one, at least for now.
Intel posted RSTE v3 for X79 series.
X79 was supposed to be the same as Patsburg-D but it seems it will be more like Patsburg-B, at least at first.
Once issues are ironed out I guess it will resume full specs.
Some things might even be enabled in firmware, others I doubt it.
I sincerelly can't understand the lack of USB 3.0, not that I need it now, but if they did implement it already in other chipsets, why not here? And then they stick a Renesas/NEC chip in their mobos, that's great Intel. Not enough they charge you with 70USD for the chipset (a lot more than X58 + ICH10R), when a lot of the logic went into the CPU, and now the extra chip. I guess mobos will go for 300USD, I can see them here going for 350EUR or so. I gave 254EUR here for my DX38BT 4 years ago, I gues I'm an idiot but couldn't find them anywhere at the time.

Agreed, Intel's mobos is overpriced for sure. But each time i see an a user, who's carrying some :banana::banana::banana::banana:y cheap mobo, i think: it is cool that i have BoneTrail.
It is still working, even after i was drunked and broke some microchip with a screwdriver when placing the thermal paste under the NB. It still works...
I tried to install IRSTE 3.0 with no luck. Same with new inf installer - there is no updates for our boards any more 8(

Maybe lack of USB 3.0 is a step to Thunderbolt? I doesn't think that i'll go with x79 too. Possibly, x58 will be a good replacement. Got to think.
About PCI, i think the time is not yet come. Is PCI is most ancient interface in PC now? I have PCI sound card (many users still have PCI cards because of their professional needs) and i does not feel myself ready to make music on embedded codecs nor to buy new PCIE card yet.
So, i'll stay with DX38BT for that year at least. And we'll bump up this thread few more times again.

Don't take my comments about Intel the wrong way, I would say I'm a Intel fanboy for sure, although not the kind that sees or has tolerance for nothing else.
I really like Intel's products, that's for sure.
Extreme boards are great, although when it comes to tweaking Intel still has a lot to learn, even after hiring BIOS gurus and top gamers fr development.
Still, the design is top notch (with the exception of the placement of the onboard connectors too far left that gave me trouble with my 900 case which has short cables for the fraont panel), plain and simple.
However, they're starting to look like those Taiwanese mobo makers when they use skulls and all.
Still the best for me though. Overpriced yes, but I didn't look back. It was love at first sight with the BT.

Too bad driver updates are no more for us, haven't installed LAN v16.5, have to lateron.
I don't think USB 3.0 and TB are mutualy exclusive, I guess Intel had some issue maybe another hi-speed controller inside te PCH was not viable at this time. Still, Z77 and Z75 will have it next year, all of them are 7 series so specs should be similar. The problem is that here is where the resemblance ends, X79 has nothing to do with 7 series chipsets coming soon for Ivy. Too bad since Ivy lookspretty good right now, better than SB-E. Maybe I'll need no more than Ivy anyway.
Inte had to stick to the enterprise design of Patsburg and that's where they failed, to me at least.
TB willnot be present in either Sileror Thornton, maybe in later revisions of the boards whe all issues ae fixed.
Still X58 is now dying and maybe not the best option. Ivy Bridge wil be here in April next here and I guess will be awesome, faster than X58 for sure. Native USB3.0, SATA 6G, UEFI, the works.
I know PCI is still the interface of choice for audio, but I dropped my Audigy already. Creative drivers suck anyway, onboard is ok for my needs. Anyway, 6 series and 7 series boards have no PCI support anymore, only through a PCIe to PCI bridge chip. At first, X79 was not to support PCI anymore, but due t the enterprise nature of it I guess they had to enable it.
For me legacy should be dead already, is what makes us still have 20 year old stuff in our PCs today, and hinders progress. Look at BIOS!! Finally t seems to be near death.

As far as I know, liquid cooling is an option, not supplied with the proc. Bad move.
73USD for one chip? I knew it was like 70USD but this is too much X58 was a 2 part chipset and costs 20% less. And not that X79 is all that feature rich, the best is inside the proc now. Bad, bad move Intel!! I guess we need to wait till November to check the final specs after all, here it's claimd to have the uplink after all, SAS and all SATA ports.

X79 boards starting to how.
Long time, just lurking, PCI has to stay awhile for on board peripherals. TB and USB 3.0 are different animals. USB 3.0 is a specific peripheral bus. Think of TB as a motherboard slot extension on a cable.

Onboard peripherals are no longer PCI, but PCIe, most of them at least. Any onboard controller, recent at least, will interface with PCIe bus. PCI does not have the bandwidth for newer devices, be it GbLAN controllers (Intel uses it's own path, but Realtek and others sit on PCIe bus), as well as USB 3.0 and SATA controllers are now all PCIe. Sometimes, for cost cut or unavailable lanes, you see (haven't seen recently) some extra controllers like LAN or SATA hanging from the PCI bus, but that's stupid since they'll be starving. Even audio controllers (onboard, like XFi) are no more PCI - not the onboard codecs that have their own link, that were the last to change.
There are however external controller cards on PCI, but even those are going into oblivion now, for the same reasons.
Intel removed PCI in their 6 series chipsets, only to use a PCI-PCIe bridge, for those still on legacy.
For me the perfect board has no PCI, stopped using it for a while, I don't want to get stuck to the past.
Regarding TB yes, it's a different beast alright. Still, Intel sees it as an alternative, although they're supposed to be for different purposes. TB has several protocol agnostic PCIe lanes and DP in a single cable, power supply and all. Looks good on paper, probably it will have it's use in the future, as expansion as oyu say. Speeds will grow soon, without changing interface but going optical, which was the first design goal anyway, but problems came up meanwhile.
Busy times ahead, with new stuff coming up till April: SB-E, Kepler, Northern Islands, Ivy Bridge...
It's used for devices inside the I/O hub so it costs little to bring it out.
Are you sure the internal path is PCI? Don't be mad at me but I very much doubt that. Most of the logic is now inside the proc but still the peripheral controllers inside the PCH should have a lower level interconnect. Usually, there is a PCI controller inside the silicon die, along with the rest. What I believe Intel did as of 6 series was remove those transistors, for a leaner PCH, silicon real estate is precious.

The DMI-to-PCI bridge resides in PCI Device 30, Function 0 on bus #0. This portion of
the PCH implements the buffering and control logic between PCI and Direct Media
Interface (DMI). The arbitration for the PCI bus is handled by this PCI device. The PCI
decoder in this device must decode the ranges for the DMI. All register contents are
lost when core well power is removed.
DMI is the chip-to-chip connection between the Processor and PCH. This high-speed
interface integrates advanced priority-based servicing allowing for concurrent traffic
and true isochronous transfer capabilities. Base functionality is completely software
transparent permitting current and legacy software to operate normally. New for PCH
the DMI interface operates at 5.0 GT/s.
To provide for true isochronous transfers and configurable Quality of Service (QoS)
transactions, the PCH supports two virtual channels on DMI — VC0 and VC1. These two
channels provide a fixed arbitration scheme where VC1 is always the highest priority.

specifically enabled and configured at both ends of the DMI link (that is, the PCH and

Configuration registers for DMI, virtual channel support, and DMI active state power
management (ASPM) are in the RCRB space in the Chipset Config Registers

DMI is also capable of operating in the AC terminated mode for servers. A hardware

Still, it does not specifically state that PCI is the internal link. Not that I doubt you, but that could be referring to the PCI controller on the PCH having an internal connection to the DMI bus to the proc, which is only natural. Or maybe not. For which PCH is this info?
6 series PCHs have no internal PCI controller, most boards use a PCIe-PCI bridge to provide an expansion slot.
Sometimes PCI is used to refer to PCIe as well.
On another note, prices of X79 boards (ASRock) begin to surface, from €180 upto €270.
Ivy Bridge is in massive production, ready by year end. So that Intel can claim readiness this year. But you will only be able to actually buy it by March/April next year.
EVGA and MSI show off their X79 boards as well.
Just look at EVGA SR3 (Super Record 3), dual socket 2011, Patsburg-T? SB-EP Xeon only I guess, SB-E i7 shouldn't be 2P capable.
The real question which I still have not found any definitive answers for is will the X79 support PCI-E 3.0 with IvyBridge-E CPU's are used? Or will we need a new revision e.g. X79-E?
