Cable Sleeving Guide

I personally use 1/4" black w/red tracer in my work- but I don't do the unisleeving/etc, atm I limit mine to fan controllers, fans, front panel connections...and I use the techflex 3/8" "carbon" for my sata cables (its a mix of black and clear)
my personal opinion is that its not very often people are going to be inspecting a PC with a magnifying glass and fine tooth comb, most observers *at least where I live* would be in an ooh ahh type state just seeing cables that arnt normally sleeved being sleeved (heck, most of the people I know go pretty gah gah over regularly sleeved power supplies)
however, IF I could find a decent supplier of the cleancut at decent shipping rates to canada (aka not what cableorganizer has) I'd more readily consider using that- as from what I've noticed, that SEEMS to be the general base of what the murdermod sleeving kits use (techflex can "custom" make cabling for sufficent sized orders)

Are you saying that Techflex make the mudermod cable? Can anyone send me a little piece of this famed murder mod cable so I can make my own comparison. just pm me for my address ......much appreciated

im not saying they do, thats just my personal guess, from everything I've seen of the cleancut variety and of the murdermod stuff, they are very similar
that and techflex can custom create sleeving with sufficient sized orders, which (with absolutely NO surprise) murdermods can do in spades

I see what you mean cheers DragoonXX I'm going to end up with a truckload of sleeving at the end of my quest. ther is definitely differences in the various brands. Any material scientists what to comment...is straight polyester or a mix better?

Well, for optimal thermo-capacitance, you will want a polymer resin fiber with a halide core woven to 60 strands per inch in 5 strand bundles.

That was actually just me talking out of my ass. It really doesn't matter what material it is made of as long as it isn't something that attracts dust. The weave is only important for aesthetics... some people want it to only partially conceal what is inside the sleeving, others want it completely concealed. Aside from that, there really is no difference.

Nice guide, dreamaxx. I used the brute force method to remove the round thingies from my Corsair HX1000. I cut them the best I could and then took a pair of thin needle nosed pliers and ripped the heck out of them 'til they came off (and we wonder why most of my worklogs have blood in them :p:). So far the PCI-E cables are working just fine without their little protectors:

(If I were doing this build now, I'd go ahead and shorten the wires, rather then leaving them long. It works fine in the cube, but would be a mess in smaller cases. I've since found it's quite easy to cut the wires and just crimp new pins on)

heh, i just took a hammer to that nasty nasty metal ring around the PCI-E cables on my Cossair 750W modular :yepp: worked well :p::rofl:

I don't know if anyone has said this and I don't feel like reading through 20+ pages, but Fry's sells some good stuff. However, I'm pretty sure it only comes in black (which doesn't seem to be a problem for most of you). I think (here) it's $7 for 20' of 1/8". I have no idea how that price compares to MDPC stuff. It also seems a little stiff, but I don't know if that's normal or not. It's a tight weave and I really liked it. Just my :2cents:

On the topic of 6 to 8 pin PCIE cables... I am making my own custom cable for the my 4890 which uses one 6pin and one 8pin connector. I am starting with a Dual 6 pin cable. It appears that the difference between the 6 and 8 pin cables is 2 grounds. does this sound right?

yep, just 2 grounds, all you need to do is split the grounds from another one on the cable
