thanks for the heads up
that 9800gtx+ is my old one from 3 yrs ago anyways - probably on it's last legs by now considering it's been used to hell for all 3 years non-stop...
this 8800gt amazingly i found new, and from what i heard was only installed briefly and ran once...according to the dealer it still has the original warranty and i was told they'd still honour it...
...so obviously no flashing will be done on this one since it's already overclocked anyway...
i just know that locally a friend has a used bfg 9800gt oc in the 40.00 range which unless it's 55nm is EXACTLY THE SAME THING...
i know the clocks on this one are 625 and 900mhz and in the gpuz for bfg 9800gt oc it shows EXACTLY the same bit for bit as the bfg 8800gt oc so i gotta think it's the same exact card with a new price tag slapped on it and a bios refresh...
anyways you told me the cards with same memory and same sp count would work so
8800gt oc should be compatible with 8800gt superclocked - therefore you'd think 9800gt oc would be the same thing - just a flash needed (i hope)
anyways i may try it - it's just the cost of a new motherboard bugs me cause i hate ASUS - AMI bios SUCKS:(:(:( and i never heard anything but grief from nvidia motherboard owners
and then when you add up the cost of a 40.00 9800gt oc, a 100.00 motherboard and a decent 12v30amp 550 watt powersupply you're looking at the cost of a new 6870 anyway - which would probably whip it...:confused::confused:
i dunno let's just see if this 8800gt superclocked can pull it's weight in Crysis from start to at least mid-game anyway - which is where i believe i left off the last time i played it...:clap::clap:
-
BFG have gone under and are no longer honouring warranty sadly (if thats the card you were talking about)
As for the rest... there's no reason it shouldn't work, if its what ya wanna do :)
-
no, i heard about bfg, i was referring to the EVGA 8800gt superclocked i got today...i believe EVGA is still surviving...
i guess when they mean "lifetime warranty" they mean only for the life of the company..at least in the case of BFG anyway...
that's unfortunate ...i can now say i've had two successful BFG Nvidia OC's from them......but what i can't believe is that the 9600gt oc by bfg was so good it almost matched an overclocked already oc'd 8800gt sc - only 500pts difference and at the exact same settings, cpu speed, ram speed and resolution...
i now understand why there was such fierce competition between the two
but like i said the 48 extra shaders come in handy in Crysis giving me an extra 15-20fps so i think it's a worthwhile upgrade...:cool::cool:

:p: You didnt compare apples:apples. OS and drivers play a big part in 3DMark. I also still wonder if the 9600GT score is "wrong" :) ;)

i think i'm gonna try SLI (the forbidden one) some guy at nVidia forums where they would, you'd think, frown on it did it successfully
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=167149
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/4...t8800gtsli.png
the two i'm gonna try hopefully without flashing (but if it is it will be the cheap one for sure - not the 60.00 one that still has warranty from EVGA intact) are 8800gt Superclocked and a used (heavily) 9800gt OC by BFG...which i found for 40.00 (needless to say i gave the alpha dog away since it was useless anyway and a :banana::banana::banana:ty 256mb)...
so i'm gonna go for the only SLI supporting oc-able motherboard available in Canada while it still lasts..
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...&Tpk=775%20sli
the only hit i'm really gonna take is having to endure the AMI bios :(:(:( and the cost of a new 28 Amp Power Supply - which should be enough...
but 200.00 is the most i'm gonna sink into this "fun" experiment
i hope if it fails at least the motherboard survives and all i'll lose is a garbage 9800gt oc - that appears to have a defect anyway - if it works they say it compares to a 5830-5850...
it's either that or i buy just one GTX 275 which obviously would still be more than 200.00
hey you only live once - may as well have some fun...:D:D:D

i don't know exactly how i would ever be able to find another new 8800gt superclocked 4 years after the fact, but i imagine like the guy at Nvidia forums who did this successfully, the closest card possible should probably do it..
i'm abandoning the idea of trying to get a BFG card to cooperate with an EVGA card because it reduces the chances of success probably significantly....
the two the guy used in the Nvidia forum were the same manufacturer as it appears so i may have to go evga and as close as i can get it appears...
luckily there are a few floating around the web
like this one here featured previously at newegg.ca and now ebay...
(EVGA 9800gt 512-P3-N975-AR)

http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/...380-TS?$S300W$
this bears a striking resemblance to my 8800gt superclocked here which means it's probably the exact same card just refreshed and a new price tag er i mean premium slapped on...:rolleyes:
http://images.bizrate.com/resize?sq=300&uid=706697876
but we'll see
the only bugger will be having to upgrade my psu - but hey as long as it's only around the 200 dollar mark...i'd like to go Gigabyte for the SLI motherboard, but THE ONLY WAY I WOULD FIND ONE is second hand and that's not very likely to happen - edit: actually now that i think of it the 8800gt is actually brand new - i just bought it from someone who never used it....either way;);) hey, it was a lucky find
i'll post back if i can manage to pull this off - and cheaply
edit: there also a lot of talk on Google about how the 8800gt stacks up against the newer 5670 - we'll here is actual proof... yeah i know one's XP and the other 'the new OS' but it gives you an idea... close but no cigar...the 8800 is still better... 57XX series is a whole different story though and btw i've had those also...however as only a casual Crysis gamer it's kind of overkill to me...
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/2444/your5670.png
5770 only on the most basic settings @ 4.0ghz
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/5558/5770x.png
and yeah i know this is older news but i figured someone who's stuck with an older 8800gt that's on it's last legs or even a 9800gt and considering an upgrade might find this useful
Enjoy;););)

I just went over the figures again and it's actually gonna be about 236.00 in the end to pull this off...
so i had what seemed to be a better idea...
maybe i'll just go for a GTX 470 instead
should healthily beat two 8800's in SLI...
either that or the 6870 since i wouldn't have to buy a new psu (if i was lucky)
they seem to be about neck and neck, but i like the idea of GDDR5 on a 320biit memory bus - something ATI don't seem to have the balls to try yet (and we all know they could)
i dunno - anybody have any opinions on which of the two would be better for Crysis (and only that game)
all i want is 60fps on Gamer/High no AA, no filtering etc - but Gamer nonetheless...
and i'd prefer Nvidia because of the Cuda but ATI stream is fine also
I'm not sure i like that texture fill rate on the 470 though, that's actually LESS than i'm getting now - if it actually makes a difference...(must be an error)
http://benchmarkreviews.com/images/r...TX470_GPUZ.gif
or 6870
http://news.softpedia.com/images/new...-Review-54.jpg
Gotta keep it at about 300.00 or less and yes i would use newegg.ca:shrug::shrug::shrug:
Thank you for your input:clap::clap::clap:

I'm back to this thread because i got something relevant (possibly to the original op - maybe from a BIOS point of view - anyway) ...
oops...something happened - it looks as if i'll have to postpone this...
i will be back with results later
i'm still doing this, it'll just have to wait a little bit....
