I got this board a E6600 (L629F) a Ultra-120 Extreme , DRR2 1066 RAM from Crucial
I've never overclocked before where should I start?

2x1GB Twin2X2048-10000C5DF Dominator
Asus P5K Deluxe 0311 bios
I decided to revisit my 2x1GB Twin2X2048-10000C5D Dominator memory rated at DDR-1250Mhz 5-5-5-18 at 2.4v (kindly supplied by Corsair :) ).
http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/mem...000C5D_006.jpg http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/mem...000C5D_011.jpg http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/mem...000C5D_012.jpg Originally, even with 0311 official bios the 10000C5D Dominators were a bit more than flaky on P5K Deluxe - understandably so as 10000C5D Dominators are validated only on eVGA 680i motherboards. But it seems now that I am retesting them in black dimm slots instead of yellow dimm slots, they're alot more stable particularly at 4-4-4-x timings needing less vdimm and clocking a bit tighter on memory timings in black dimm slots than in yellow dimm slots!

Note, prior to these tests all my 2x1GB memory testing to date on P5K Deluxe has been in the yellow dimm slots.

- Asus P5K Deluxe 0311 official bios
- 128MB Gainward FX5200 PCI
- 2x1GB Corsair Twin2X2048-10000C5D in black dimm slots

I managed to pull off some quick tests for low clock Super Pi Challenge @3600Mhz and managed my fastest Super Pi 1M and 32M times to date for a quad core Kentsfield Q6600 cpu :woot:

From my experience on Asus P5B Deluxe, quad core kentsfield B3 stepping is around 10-20 seconds slower clock for clock than core 2 duo B2 dual core cpus. And even my personal best E6700 B2 dual core time on P5B Deluxe @3600Mhz is only 13min 08ish.
Will have to do some more tests with black dimm slots it seems :D
Edit: okay confirmation from bingo13/Gary from Anandtech here, black dimm slots are designed to do this according to Asus!
Edit 2: Yup can confirm now black dimm slots rule for 10000C5D Dominators on P5K Deluxe
Black dimm slot = 625mhz 5-5-5-15 3-30-3-3-8 at 2.4v memtest able
Yellow dimm slot = 590mhz 5-5-5-18 10-42-10-10-11 at 2.45v semi stable in memtest
Huge difference!
YOU are a good sport:D ...i will concede that the P5K is slightly faster in at least the SuperPI category; BUT, not by much..hehehehe:p:Quote:

I wonder if the same holds true for any of the P5B range? Might have opened up another whole playing field? Can't help wonder and hope someone way above me has a crack at testing it out.
I wonder what would happen if you guys disabled cores? For Conroes IMHO most 965 and P35 perform nearly identically at the same speeds. It seems like the P5K just has an upper hand with quad cores...
on my P5B Deluxe both dimm slots were about the same no one pair of slots was a clear winner like on P5K Deluxe.
Yup also can re-confirm now black dimm slots rule for 10000C5D Dominators on P5K Deluxe
Black dimm slot = 625mhz 5-5-5-15 3-30-3-3-8 at 2.4v memtest able
Yellow dimm slot = 590mhz 5-5-5-18 10-42-10-10-11 at 2.45v semi stable in memtest
Huge difference!
This does not bode well for anyone trying the C2D's in all 4 slots :(
not really just means a bit more tweaking

Asus P5K Deluxe 0311 bios
More tests to confirm that indeed black dimm slots on Asus P5K Deluxe seem to clock these 10000C5D Dominators alot higher with tighter timings and lower vdimm than yellow dimm slots.

Corsair 10000C5D Dominators:
Using memtest86+ v1.70:
Yellow slots = 590mhz 5-5-5-18 10-42-10-10-11 at 2.45v memtest semi stable
Black slots = 625mhz 5-5-5-15 3-30-3-3-8 at 2.4v memtest able
In windows had to loosen the subtimings up and drop the clocks a bit for 2.4v vdimm but still @620Mhz 5-5-5-15 8-30-8-8-8 at 2.4v is much better than Yellow slots @590mhz 5-5-5-18 10-42-10-10-11 at 2.45v which was only semi stable in memtest.

Hey EVA, forget benching, your should start up a screenie composite posting championship. Man you got it down to a science. I'm way too lazy. ;)
"Hey EVA, forget benching, your should start up a screenie composite posting championship. Man you got it down to a science."
He does. Eva, are you on vacation or something. All that takes much time. It is very helpful though and nice find on the dimm slots. Reminds me of the orange and yellow ones from awhile back.
nah not on vacation but read my forum member title
<=== :D
great results eva2000.
gives me hope that i can get more out of my OCZ Platinum chips which have turned out to be pretty disappointing. cant run DDR2-1000 4-4-4-15 with 2.35v or 5-5-5-15 at 1200mHz at same vDIMM. think its safe to run 2.4v w/o active cooling on the chips?
time to try the yellow slots :D
Been playing with my P5K Deluxe + E6400 for a bit now. Currently has 0311 bios. For some reason, my system sorta hangs for no reason at random intervals. It's not a stability issue, it's something else, like the BIOS is just stopping for no reason or something. I'll be running Orthos for awhile, and the OS just sorta stops responding. Orthos continues to still run, passing tests, but AI Suite/Core temp just stops updating, Orthos timer stops, the "GO" flashing stops, Tests continue to pass, can't even push the Start menu, Mouse still moves, but everything sorta just hangs there. I can't even turn the system off using the power switch, I have to turn it off using the switch on the PSU. After letting it cool off a bit, I go back into the BIOS, and the clock is behind, as it seems the time stopped after the "hang" occurs.
Anyone experience anything similar? Really need to figure out what's causing this. This is happening on stock settings even, it's really strange. Got a 40gb IDE hooked up, a sata optical drive on the black slot, both controllers running IDE mode. PSU is Corsair HX520.
