then i think both of us were unlucky

Q750A219, very good batch but need a bit too much voltage for 24/7 above 4ghz.
500*8, 1.28V load / 1.31V idle:
Windows and orthos is showing 4500mhz, it think it is 9 multiplier...

4.1ghz, 1.35V load / 1.39V idle:

rofl. you think thats alot of voltage? hahaha
Im running 4.1GHz on my Q746A333 (i think, cant remember the last 3 digits off the top of my head) and im using 1.46825 in bios, 1.42-1.43 on idle, 1.41 underload. Now thats too much voltage, 1.39 is fine.
Wow... that is a bit much. I had an issue with mine. I had it at 450x9 1.375 in bios (prime95 stable for a few hours) for a few months. Then one day decided to do a few high voltage benches and when I went back down to 450mhz with 1.375 it wouldnt even pass orthos 15mins (granted I had never used orthos before) and now I'm not even stable at that frequ with even 1.38 (45mins produced an error) so I'm sticking with 3.6ghz 1.225 in bios 1.20 cpu-z. For the games I play I cant notice a diff with .4ghz, so dont see a reason for 4.05ghz and above. At least until BF3 comes out!:ROTF:
@natech
What are the other settings did you use for your OC? like NB volts, vdimm, divider, etc.? :D
@mrcape
The first E8400 is really a nasty performer. It needs around 1.39v to be stable at 3.8ghz. Batch/FPO Q746A466.
Mine is currently Q746A512. I guess this chip is great for 24/7 but the voltage scales quite high with higher clocks.
I just notice (thanks for the tip) its much easier to work with lower multis with the E8400. i tried 9x467 and 8.5x495 the latter is much easier to work with.
nah, still runs fine at 4GHz at 1.36v underload. good chip.. somewhat.
This is a rarity though. I would say a majority of E8400s will be stable at 3.6ghz. I do however think it all has to do with the motherboard as far as default voltages go. My mobo cpu voltage in auto is like 1.325 if not higher. I was talking to another guy on here and his mobo default or auto was 1.25, some of the batches cant run 3.6ghz with that low volts. Mine however can run 3.6ghz without error with 1.225v, and I like that spot.
Wondering but not tried whether putting lower multi does require different vcore for same frequencies but with higher multi .
anyone knows?
from what I've seen around , and surely true for xeons E3110 they can do 3.6 ghz mostly at stock vcore .
my Q746 runs stable orthos at that o/c with even 1.15v load ( although auto settings does put +1.23v for safety I think ... )
I saw benches on reviews with E8400 at stock vcore for such overclock 3.6 ( 400 x 9 )
I think it depends on your luck. I had an E8200 and E8400 which needs around 1.4Vcore to get stable @ 4Ghz (500FSB)
still on air and 23C room temp...seems good to me...:D
5040mhz 1.65vcore 560x9 on water, too bad my mobo is so unstable above 520fsb.

Hughy, didnt i say that those high voltage tests would :banana::banana::banana: up the chip? Damn man, really sorry to hear that though.. i said that it would screw the chip up :( Not saying i told you so, but damnit. lol nah, might put her down to 4.0Ghz, now that i hear everyone telling me its too much. still runs great though i give it that..
Another vote for the 8.5 multiplier. Mine is ridiculously better there, requiring significantly less voltage for the same clocks at 8x or 9x.
I know your pain, i backed it down to 4GHz and now i needed to bump Vcore from 1.425 to like 1.43 something, its the one 1 bump up after 1.425, leaving the chip there from now on. not worth it
Hey guys, first post.. Ive been following this thread along with others, waiting for my account to be processed. Anyhow, I've got an Abit iP35 Pro and E8400 Batch Q750, G.Skill PC2-8500 1066 DDR @ 1080. I've had mixed results with this chip, but I'm having a bit of an issue the last few weeks. I can run orthos for 48+ hrs straight, prime, superpi, everything.. nothing crashes, nothing gives errors, however.. the computer locks up completely (must be reset) when the computer is idle, seems like anywhere between 10mins - 1 1/2hrs. I'm currently running the official v16 bios on this board, my CPUz load vcore is 1.32 at the moment, I've had it all the way up to 1.39 and i still get the same issue with the idle locking, its weird.. stays stable no matter what WHILE its under load.. but once you stop/pause orthos, and leave the computer, or leave it idling all night while not under load, it'll be locked up in the morning.
My temps are ~50c under load or less at 1.32 vCore, ive tried everything, reinstalling xp, my MCH, VTT, ICH all have been bumped up a notch or two, my DDR @ 2.100. (VTT = 1.21, MCH 1.44, ICH 1.32, GTLREF's @ 61% at the mo.), my ram timings are stock (5-5-5-15) for this ram.. now, i did get the computer all the way thru the night idling and several hours the next day when i didn't have everest running in the background (with sensor icons in the systray) and no orthos, realtemp, or cpuz running.. coincidence? or has anyone else had this problem? phew, sorry.. im long winded.. thanks guys, hope im not in the wrong place here :p love your forums
BTW, I'm at 450 x 9. I've tried higher FSB's, and they'd probably be fine, but the idle problem still occurs.. I'm going to run orthos for a few hours now, and stop it before i goto bed with no everest/cpuz/realtemp running and see if it is still live and kicking in the morning..

Good to have ya here... :yepp:
First off... Good choice in hardware. The Abit is a great o'cer! Hope it doesn't crash tonight without those things running. If it does forget about what I am going to say first. First I would suggest setting all to stock/default (make sure it's prime stable even with stock voltages) and seeing if it crashes with those programs running or not. If it does than it's not your overclock... if it doesnt there is something about your overclock and those programs running.
Second thing is (if comp crashes tonight or if it crashes when you set all to stock/default) it may be a PSU. I have found in the past that no matter how much you spend on a PSU that sometimes you get a bad one that does some funky stuff. I have changed every part in my rig before with similar problems only to find out that the last component left was the PSU and sure enough that was it. Electricity does funny things sometimes. However I would try all other things before you exchange a PSU. I would even run memtest for hours on you current rig to just make sure you memory is stable. It sounds like it is though with prime/orthos.
:welcome:
Pretty much what Hughyhunter suggested, it sounds like unstable ram to me. Try memtest86 as he said, make it a bootable disk and let it run for a few hours. (i still need to run memtest myself :p:)
Here is all the info I could think of.
So all voltages except cpu core voltages are default. I have only rised core voltage. Should I rise something other too?
e8400 batch is Q805A. I really don't remember what the divider is for mem but I had it so that memorys are about 800MHz even under. I really think that memory (yes, my memory sucks, but still) isn't the limiting factor here.
And I use 9x multiplier.
I will do more testing when I get home from work.
Thanks :)
Thank you, I do appreciate it :D
Well, here we are next morning, I left the system running all night with no programs open (just some firefox windows, which loves to suck down the ram) and it didn't hard lock. So it seems the second time this thing has stayed up through the night is when everest and cpuz werent running (i actually had left realtemp running). I'll do this a few more times, as I'm starting to believe everest has something to do with it. Also, I have booted into memtest and let it run all night with no issues in the last few days. This ram doesn't seem to like the timings tightened, but I haven't messed with em too much in order to eliminate having any further issues.
Also, I have set it back to stock a few times (within the last couple weeks), and the idle hardlock problem continues there as well.
There were a couple of times I noticed when this thing idle-hardlocked, I looked down into the systray at the everest temp icons and noticed the "PWM" temps (according to the little temp icons) got stuck at 172c, and the cpu case temps also stuck at some weirdly high number *but numbers were normal before it locked up. So maybe everest/everest driver glitched, and then hung windows out to dry?
hi,
ı have a e8400 q746a514 and it used to work at 4.05 at 1.432 voltage(load) 12 hours stable then a few days ago I run orthos again it gave an error half an hour later. I pissed off because ı had spent so many hours to make it stable for 12 hours orthos. there is already 10 c difference between cores at idle so I bought another e8400 . today I received but haven't tried it yet. it is a q802a570.. is there anyone knows anything about this batch??? and what is the highest vcore you recommend to avoid degredation?
I stayed just under 1.4v.. i wont go over 1.375v and im @4.1 on Air my Chip is a Q745A731 1.9.08
Ok, It's not degrading the 45nm cpus just need a small bump in vcore
after a few weeks of burn-in, to regain stability.
Here is a quote from me:
It is apparent now that the 45nm CPU's have a burn-in period of about
1 - 2 weeks, after this time the CPU's will need a small bump in vcore
(.024mv - .050mv) to regain initial prime stability.
My CPU's are rock solid stable now, and are not showing any other signs
of further degradation, I even had the vcore on one up close to 1.5v for
some suicide runs, and still did not hurt it

Hi there,
Anyone got experience / know something about e8400 batch 807?
Thanks!
If you still can get one, do it now! Best week for E8400. All cpus i saw until right now will do a min. of 4200MHz stable with less then 1.4V! :)
I recieved a Q807A269 today. Just a first boot/quick test, error after about 12 minutes, but this one has potential! :D

Got my E8400 yesterday.
Batch FPO# Q807A261. @ 4,35 ghz v1.38 its Orthos stable ~2 hours.
Vid = 1.0875 :eek: :D
Error After 13 mins @ 4,45 ghz and v1.5 real ( max temp 100*).
All is under Air (Cpu under Termalright Big Typ)
results of my brand new E8400 Q802A570
VID: 1.0375
EARLY RESULTS:
POSITIVES: Seems stable at 1.216v 3825mhz
and 1.296 4050mhz
NEGATIVES: There is 18 C difference between cores at idle and the temp goes to wild as ı rise the core voltage..
at 1.296 load 4.05mhz the cores reach 90s and cpu to 76.. It rises so much with smal core voltage increases...
ı am going to crazy with these stupid e8400 cpus. either they are bad mhz performers or the temperatures are weird. or ı just god really bad luck...
please comment
Mine E8400
Core 1 temp = 58*
Core 2 temp = 49*
But under load temps are almost same on cores. (+/- 3 degrees)
new batches q80x roxors.
zlojack Q807/809 heard they're great.
Agreed... I had to bump up about .015v for mine. Probably even more. I did a 1.6v suicide run too! These buggers rock!
They have temp sensor problems. What does it idle at with stock settings?
This is great IMO! Dont be fooled by all these people that are 1.2v at 4+ Ghz. I have a good batch IMO and need 1.38v for 450mhz X 9multi.
500 x 9 with 1.424v Load.
I guess I'll post here.
Can bad ram cause your screen to look completely artifacted? my video cards seem stable. but this has happened a few times, most being when i try to run 3dmark, the computer doesn't freeze but everything looks artifacted.
All my games run fine :hm:
I'm going to snatch a picture of it next time it does it.
EDIT: this happens without any load on the graphic cards, so its not video related..
That might be it, i just installed the 8.4 cats, I'll see if i have the problem again.
I should be getting new ram pretty soon, this stuff i have now is holding back my OC. With new ram, can't wait to see what i can bench
Yeah, i have just been going by the cpu temp instead. I hope we'll eventually get an answer about these temp problems.
OK, it does this randomly, like loading up a game (you know, the screen goes black or "flickers" before it loads a game or 3d app). It done it again when i started CSS, i turn my monitor off and back on to see what that would do. And amazingly, that fixed it. Whats causing this? it just started this a few days ago :shakes:Quote:

I would test the PSU rails first, then check for your Monitor .inf for an update,(tho I doubt thats it). Again, could be a bad cell on the Vid memory.
May want to do a complete Uninstall of the card, and remove all the old ATI references with Drive Cleaner in Safe mode if you hadn't allready.
I had a similar thing happen with a PowerColor 3870, and eventually figured out it was bad memory on the card and RMA'd it.

edit; You may want to check your Cables for a good connection on both ends, as well as Re-seating the vid card.
Rock solid:up:

lol @ same person
Concave/convex IHS, or try swapping your cpus into one another's identical setup and reassessing your temperatures.
Identical rig 1, E8400 #1, 1.27Vcore, 77C load
Identical rig 2, E8400 #2, 1.43Vcore, 77C load
to
Rig1, Cpu 2
Rig2, Cpu 1
See if you get 77C on both processors at load.

I think you misunderstood.. both of them are the same rig... ı just swapped the cpus because the previous one was a bad overclocker.. this second cpu is better at overclocking but the temps are so high.... ı couldn't decide to trust these temps and stop here or go on overclocking.. especially the second core is messed up. it idles at 59 never goes below... but at load two core temps are nearly the same... another strange thing is that cpu temp is higher than the lowest core temp... I 'm messed up....
Still testing mine. Got 05 mark benchable @ 4500 mhz 1.432v real
vPLL just 1.66
Got A E8400 B# Q808A224
I got the chip to 450x8= 3.6 at 1.248 stable
it seam that is batch needs higher Votage to run at high speeds
At 443x9 = 4 ghz i need 1.416 to be stable
A little high i think
I am runing p5b-D
cool :D
going down on votage to see how low i can get this thing to go
don't know how long these chips will last at 1.3-1.4 vottage
will post benchmark later
I know it can't be the power supply. Because, if i turn the monitor off and back on, its fine. I think i might need to search for my monitor's driver. I used to be able to get it off of LG's site, but after i reinstalled vista, i can't find it anywere.
Do you think that could be the cause?
I'm saving up for new ram by the way, maybe some Trancsend axeram with D9's. For the price, they seem great. This ram i have it holding me back!
mrcape got one of those great E8400's. :D Pretty low voltages plus it scales well with voltage.
My chip quite has a low voltage requirement for 4.05ghz but scales like crap with voltage with the x9 multiplier. Im not so sure why it can run OCCT stable with an x8.5 multi at 4.2ghz with 1.36v. But if I run it at 4.2ghz with x9 multi with the same voltage I get the "quack" from OCCT.
update just fried Power supply and also just lost the board with it P5b-D
toorow going to get Asus P5E w/ DualDDR2 1066 and tryed that
lol
any info on the Q801A290 batches?? thats whats showing at *tankguys* right now...i ordered one.and will post results when i get it.... thanx
I have a dumb question - I got my E8200 @ 4.05Ghz and SmallFFT can run for hours but Blend would fail everytime during the 30-40 mins range. I've increased Vdimm, Vnb, etc but with no luck. What could be wrong? :D
Man, I feel like I got a bum chip maybe. My E3110 needs like 1.39V under load so that prime doesn't just crash in 3 minutes.
That said, it might be because I'm using outdated cooling-the zalman 9500 can barely keep the temps under control at this voltage...under load I'm seeing 84 degrees in Core temp...gahh!!!
Trying some of the settings other people had on here has it down to 1.39v at least...it was up even higher before I swapped the CPU GTL multiplier to auto (apparently manually setting it isn't as effective even at the highest setting on the P5K vanilla).
Anybody have any good settings for the P5K Vanilla? I might have to go invest in better cooling because it's just going to get worse when summer comes =(
also tried a 03,05,06 run with 1.5Vcore..still with air..
Have you tried bumping VTT/FSB Term, and maybe PLL volts?
Just a small amount though like 1.20v for VTT, and 1.60v for PLL.
This may be whats needed since your having to push higher FSB frequency
on a e8200. Also you may need to play around with your GTL Ref voltage.

Hey Guys just got a spanking brand new E8500 from tigerdirect yesterday. this thing is stable at 1.5V load 4.4ghz...can prime @ 4.5ghz, but it fails @ 30 minutes, and can boot into windows @ 4.6ghz and play games or run benchies. has been running prime so far for 12+hrs. will call fully stable once it hits 16hrs. and oh i need 1.29Vcore to run stable @ 4.0ghz. i think i got an average chip...considering its an E8500. my 24/7 overclock will be 4.0ghz at 1.29vcore.....
mine degraded again.
I got me a Q807A050, tray version, today.
Seeing some good results with Q807 batches, I was expecting some from it.
Guess I have a dud.
Only does 3750 at 1.296V, what a POS.
At 3800 and 1.296V, Prime crapped out after 10 seconds.
Just tested it for 1 hour, as it wasn't worth wasting my time on it.
Got my E8200 back in.
Whatever, better luck next time. :D
It was the only Q807A i found (by luck).
Checked in 4 stores and most of them were :
Q802Axxx (3 tray versions, 2 boxed)
Q805Axxx (about 5 trays)
Q808A120 (2 boxed)
Also found a couple of Xeons 3110.
Q805A165
Q806A227
think I might give a Xeon a try.
That sucks.. :p: I can imagine how happy you was, when you found that Q807..
I love my Q807! It runs like hell. Finally sub 10m 32M, and still some potential left!

4700 with only 1.480V,
I'm still angry at myself for not getting one of those from HPM.
But as usual, it's a crapshoot. I might have gotten a dud one too, you never know.
But I still have my nice E8200, hehe.

My 1st quick try, meager compared to others, but an improvement on my e6850 @ 3.8 that gave me ~13s 1M SP. And at $480 for the cpu ($220), mobo($60), ram(50), hsf(55), and psu(95), I'm pretty happy so far.

No... your good. Nice low volts. You dont want to ruin that. I never got my 1.375 back after messing around trying to go higher... but if you are like me you will want to max this sucker out and see what it can do. I did suicide runs with 1.6v 3dmarking trying to break my own record. It's fun!
My Orthos Beta always give me a wrong speed way off. For example if i'm at 3.8 it indicate 4.5 ghz ... very weird..
Well, I couldn't help myself, so last night i went 525 x 8.. Here we are :
Gonna keep orthos running for awhile longer, that 1.340 is with 1.3850 set in the bios. First vCore I went with after upping from 450 x 9..
Think that's the best chip here at XS atleast :)
what a golden one!
Got My P5E and E8400 running at 4005
All stable on 1.39 bios say 1.45
Decided to push my E8200 (Q740A621) a little more and see what it would do.
So far, it doesn't look that bad at all.
Ran Prime Small for 6 hours at 4300Mhz and 1.344V, Prime Large is running for almost 3 hours now.
The custom package will be ran afterwards.
4300Mhz, 1.344V :
