Official Winchester OC Thread!

I have been talking to one of mytechie friends and he said that the reason why I cant seem to get above 2.5GHz is because my motherboad and RAM is not designed to run at anything above 250MHz FSB. He said that cooling and quality of RAM is the key component. I have Corsair XMS3700 RAM (CAS3) which can go upto over 500MHz FSB and I have a Venus 12 CPU fan. With the fan on max and the cpu core voltage set to 7.5V / 7.25V my cpu runs at 50 - 60 degrees with the fan full on.
What temparatures do you all get when runing at higher FSBs than 250MHz?

i get from 33C-54C at load w/ 260x10, and 265x10. and 285x9. But the temps on this Neo2 are pretty inaccurate. Now I'm at 33C w/ the side panel off my case. System temp always stay @ 19C-25C at load and sometimes higher at idle according to bios.

My 3200+ runs @ 2620 (262*10), 1.46-1.47V, using WC.
Temps under load are between 43-45°.

Ah right, Watercooling seems to te the way to go then.
I am getting mroe case fans within 2 weeks htough so that should lower my ambient temps.

Is it bench or prime stable?

i'll try prime, benchmarks are not going to run here(x800 is busted, tomorrow going to shop to rma)

Just read your article. Great info. However, I just wanted to point out that passing Prime95 doesn't mean system is stable. I have experience personally CPU running 2 instances of Prime95 (Max FPU stress and Max heat) for over 12hrs w/o any problems but won't run UT2004 and HL2 properly.

Thus, stability can't be tested on just Prime95, have to loop games like UT and 3Dmark as well.

like to add about prime95 and stability. if it does pass prime, chances are more likely that freezes, instability with games are due vga overclock/driver issues, game config files etc. i tore my hair out trying to get hl2, d3 stable on a system that passed prime. it was only when i scaled down my gfx oc and or removed some game config tweaks that things became stable. that being said, the same gfx overclock that was hl2/d3 unstable was stable looping 3dmark.

I have no clue how you guys get such crazy OC at such low voltages. Mem is 2x512 Corsair Value Select at 166:200.

I'm Prime stable at 250x10 for 24 hours, didn't try longer, at that voltage, but anything above that is meh :confused:

At 248x10.5=2605Mhz, I can only Pi up to 64k at that voltage :(

Guys, please make a habit of also reporting if your o/c is prime stable or not. It's good for the community looking for the good steppings.

I still have to pluck up the courage to bother removing my xp-90 and getting that info. I've hit it's limits with heat at 1.6V upwards and have a star ice sitting idle here. Eventually when I get bored I'll install it and do that as it is a nice clocker and I'm sure it will hit 2.8Ghz plus at 1.8V. stable at 2.7 @ 1.55 atm

Putting old XBL (also prime stable at same speed) into my wifes computer over the weekend - hers is up to 240x10, should get better w/ new mem :hehe:

Will post screens after I get to something resembling a 'final' place for a while (will try out the mach 1 someday)

(And yes I will set up D2ol for the gang after I am at theat point - gotta keep the house warm for the winter :banana4: ).

Just another note after reading some more of the above.
Heavy load temps are always about 48-50c, 4 chips, 2 dif coolers, 4 diff. fans 4 diff compounds, on the desk in the bsmt or in a case.. Just luck I guess :shrug:

I had to make the RAM much more high latency to cope with the high FSBs. Thats why the SuperPi score is quite bad considdering the speed my CPU was running at. I am looking to get some much better, low latancy Corsair RAM in the future, though.

I did try 2.7GHz but pc locked up... Shall try later on when it has cooled down.

Nice cpu Alec, try @ 1.6v vcore, you should be able to hit higher speeds.

just a quick question, which bios are most of u guyz using? cos i had abit of troulbe with 1.5b1 bios..im currently using bios 1.4b1mod

I have the latest BIOS update for my AV8. (Think its 1.7)

There is some kinda glitch with my CPU-Z... The core voltage was actually set to 1.75V not 1.4V

Mine's the same week and code as yours. Runs fine at 250x10 1:1 2.5-3-3-7 2.85v (OCZ Plat R2 TCCD). When I try a higher HTT/Lower Multi, like 9x275, it can prime & StressCPU for hours on end, but :banana::banana::banana::banana:up when doing normal things.

As i'm currently between going from water to phase, i'm stuck with air for now. Still, it's annoying me as i'm pretty sure this thing can do better.

I agree and are you using any dividers or straight 1:1? What was the stepping?

i'm runnin' 1:1 not sure the stepping i didn't pay much attention...anyway it more of a project chips for me lol...runnin' completely stock cooling as of now...even got the stock thermal paste =)...all about the low ambient temp lol i've been sticking my computer out the window as it hits -12C out at night...and i do my overclocking and benching at night...not much of an issue sence i'm practically nocturnal for the most part...of course...its -11C right now...brrrrr
