That's because Crysis 2 is a console sh*te. Crysis on the other hand will welcome that much power if you mod it enough... Good thing that the original Crysis is as advanced compared to what is coming out in the last 4 years...

So Nvidia's marketing department new instructions are: ''we are not faster, but we are quieter''?
That make sense. All the emphasis by some reviewers about the 6990 ''noise'' level (while Guru3d came to totally different results) is starting to look like Nvidia was preparing the field for what's coming march 22. Not faster but ''quieter''. The 6990 noise issue is totally exagerated and blownout of proportions, and you realize that with a 6990 in hands. But nvidia's marketing department is preparing the field carefully...
Food for thoughts.
... nice for air cooling ... but for those who want to water cool it ... man ... it's going to be a tight battle ... depends on overclocking potential ( that i really don't think it's going to be extraordinary ... 4+1 power phase for each gpu are as good as 570's vrm's ... same pcb won't give the same oc potential than a single gpu single pcb ... so ... meh ... let's see...
I know. I can't believe people will buy a 6990 or 590 and use the POS plastic air coolers on those cards.
But since reviewers REALLY insisted on the noise of th 6990, and since it's a non-issue since almost everyone will watercooled them, it looks suspicious to me...
It sounds like a marketing department hard at work.
Just like it looks suspicious that every conclusion about the 6990 are: ''the 700$ 6990 is 10% under the 1000$ 580 SLI, so 580 SLI is a better buy''...
Why not do 1000$ against 1000$? Since when are we not doing $ against equal $ comparisons? So now we do 300$ against 600$ cards and we are surprised that the 600$ beats the 300$ cards? Doh.
Where are the 1000$ 6990+6970 Tri-Fire against 1000$ 580 SLI comparisons? Why the ''1000$ is better then 700$'' we can read everywhere. 2 cards against 2 cards, 2 PCIe slots against 2 PCIe slots, 1000$ against 1000$.
There is a BIOS switch on the 6990 to exactly meet the 6970 speed in 2 seconds for a reason. It's to go Tri-Fire in 2 seconds with a 6970. AMD did it intentionnally, it's not a coincidence! This is a genious idea! So why not a single word about that in ALL the reviews about the 6990? 6990+ 6970 = 1000$, just like 580 SLI.
We all know the Tri-Fire set-up will beat 580 SLI, but not a single reviewer out there did it. Why? There is a switch on the 6990 EXACTLY for this, but not a single word about it?
Looks suspicious to me. :)
Hardware.fr did it !
The problem is not watercooling or not... this is a model reference, you have Sapphire, Asus, XFX + HIS who will have their own 6990 models, most stock 880-900mhz with their own cooling design.
If really the sound of the cooler is a problem for one, use a third party air / water cooling or buy an AIB models is not a problem at all .. And again, i have myself got more infos about the noise, and try the card in a shop friend..
untill you mesure under Furmark load.... in games the level is absolutely normal ( well in a good ventiled case, so with some fans running ). Ofc as all card if you push the fan to 100%... good luck.
You have the Artic cooling solution who was alllready dealing 450W for the 5970 and a model is allready in line for the 6990 ( should be in stock soon ) ....
ofc this work too the other way for the 590...
Vega... by that thinking, then, they are comparing reference cards vs reference cards ... :) so it's a valid comparison :)
well believe it because I can assure you that 95% of people who buy the 6990 or GTX 590 will use the stock cooler.... I can also assure you that at least 70% (i would say closer to 90%) of the people who buy 6990 will not flip the bios switch or even think about OCing it.
however this is XS so most of those thing don't apply. it will all come down to OCed performance for any of us... and if any other Fermi chip has been a representation.... this card will OC like a total champ.... stock at 612mhz.... who cares.... OC to 850mhz (or more)... now we are talking...
not to mention the 3gb is like $630 and the 1.5gb is $500..making the price comparison not comparable for that presentation.
We are talking about $700 video cards here.
Your average Joe isn't buying a $700 video card either. I would venture to say that a fair amount of people buying 6990 will be using aftermarket cooling. I doubt that someone spending that kind of money will tolerate that kind of noise for a 24/7 gaming rig.
Palit in Europe/Asia. And once every full-moon, you get one card showing on Newegg or Amazon. Or you have to import them from England or Europe. Good luck with the warranty. :)
Widely available. LOL!
Since Nvidia is taking a beating by AMD 2Gb 6xxx serie, EVGA just announced they will make a 3GB 580 to save Nvidia's honor.
Gainward (in Europe/Asia again) was suppose to do one also. But the crickets are still chirping about that one.
The "widely available" was italicized to impart sarcasm.
Gainward is just a sub-company of Palit. The Gainward 3GB 580s have sold quite a few in the UK but both it and the Palit are now out of stock. Gainward doesn't sell cards in the US as far as I know, just Palit.
you would be really surprised. I'm not talking about average Joe best buy shopper I'm talking about the average gamer who is dangerous enough to cobble together their own system and get it running. and the only thing they know about overclocking is that is voids warranties and "damages" your hardware. they run stock CPU coolers to boot.... these are the people who most often buy these dual GPU cards.... any enthusiast with half a brain gets a pair of cards for SLI or CFX... and I'm not just making this up... these are real trends that I have noticed from experience.... we never hear about these people on XS because these people don't belong to forums like XS....
Since it's weakness, and a free planet, why shouldn't I?
I'm not paid to hide that fact...
People should applaud AMD. it's Crysis for god sakes, and we get DOUBLE the fps at 2560X1600 4XAA compared to 580 SLI, and for the SAME price.
Same thing with Stalker COP and Metro 2033 at 2560X1600 4XAA. Almost double the fps! 3 of the most demanding games out there. And since it was with early pre-released 11.4 drivers, the other games in that review where not optimized yet, and not giving the same results. They explain it in the review.
But we are talking about Crysis, Stalker COP and Metro 2033! Double the fps for the same price!
We shouldn't be arguing. We shoud be applauding.
Yes, but with DOUBLE the fps? 3X 570 against 2X580? Would beat it with DOUBLE the fps in Crysis? Are you sure? Fermi is not scaling that well. ;)
I'm talking 2 cards against 2 cards. And DOUBLE the fps in Crysis, Stalker COP and Metro 2033, at 2560X1600 4XAA. Not 3 cards against 2.
Would like to see a review 3X570 against 2X580 with those settings. Someone can point me to it? Would like to see those fps doubling.
actually were im from 3 pre OCed 570's is only just over $900 so cheaper then all of them... but the 1.28GB is a little shy for my liking. Or you could get 3 6950's 2GB's for $270 a pop and be even cheaper. Unlock them to 6970's and your faster and cheaper still.
Like I said before the majority of people who buy dual cards are not informed like we are or need it for a special application (I saw a guys system with a 5970 stuffed into a mITX box before...)
