well said Jaco :)
Well, I got my stuff a couple of weeks ago. I've been pretty busy the last couple of weeks to do much with it, but I managed to get it assembled and do some testing with a livecd. The board came with a so-so amount of visible damage(it's ebay after all...), one of the 8x pci-e slots is somewhat broken(but the pins look all there and luckily not touching), a few bent capacitors(not to the extreme of breaking), and most concerning is the bottom of the board looks like it has rust on the solder areas or some unknown substance... Despite this the board seems to work just fine, stress tested it with linpack for a few hours and it didn't fail. Got the IPMI working as well after some futzing, one of the SMD capacitors on the module was half attached and needs to be re-soldered eventually.
I'm hoping to find some time over Christmas break to get it fully setup, need to pick up some of those 40mm fans as the one in the PSU is definitely too loud. Still debating on how to handle storage for it, tempted to go with solid state over a laptop drive. I'm thinking about doing some virtualization with it so I can run a firewall/router and separate linux partition.
Just curious how exactly you handled the PSU fan, did you just unplug it and instead rely on one of those quieter ones as an intake?
What model deltas are those, along with CFM/dBA? Trying to decide how much flow to go for, as I know it shouldn't matter too much for the CPUs, but I just want to make sure the PSU stays in spec.
ok, here goes last attempt: does *anyone* know how to decypher the diagnostic LEDs on the Intel mobo? :(
also.. I'm gonna make a list of minimum things that need to be done/plugged in for this system to work, I want to do this so I can run it by u guys & see if I'm missing anything... ok here goes:
CPU power
mobo power
CPUs
RAM
CPU fans (using appropriate headers)
1 HDD
front panel - power button
is that it?
I take it your sausage-man rig won't post. Have you tried it with only one CPU?
he added a pci slot to the board maybe a short on one of the pins.
Added? As in soldered onto the unused pads? Risky business.
ya, he's got a thread on it somewhere, that where his avatar pic came from, lol.
So what LED pattern are you getting on the diagnostics? (I'm looking at that page(s) in the manual now)
ok so as per mobo manual - there is 3 diff combos per 'array' (pair) of LEDs: red, green, & red+green (referred to as amber in manual)....

i'm getting green on LED pair #1
& amber on LED pair #3
Book sayd "Keyboard/Interface error". Do you have a keyboard plugged in?
Suggestion/guess/worth a shot ... pull the CMOS battery out, reset BIOS (with CPUs in) and try again with keyboard plugged in. Who knows.
Are you getting any beeps with that POST code?
ok. will try.
btw, could I ask what page(s) were u looking at to figure the code thingy? I desperately want to learn!
as a example, I'm looking here:
notice the page of manual doesnt correspond with what adobe says on the side

The only reference I found in the manual to that hex code (the binary translates to 04Ch) is on page 128 of the manual (140 to your document reader).
