I'll have to try it. I'm having video driver problems. I downloaded the driver from ATI and installed it and now it's worse. It's doing some weird sort of freeze if I change video settings. Reset or power off is the only thing that clears it, time does not.

Is a Sossaman rig limited to SLAC9 CPUs only? They appear to be going for a few bucks on Ebay. What's the big attraction with these systems?
don't know any SLAC9 CPUs.. its server goodness with CPUs that are essentially laptop CPUs, read = very low power consumption. Only downside is 32-bit onlyQuote:

All chips are 31watt TFP, socket 478 and 32bit. There was going to be a 64bit upgrade but it never seems to have gotten past pre-production. In other words there's a few, very few, that exist but nobody has been able to lay eyes on one.
I installed the "latest" RAGE XL driver from AMD for the onboard RAGE XL video chip. Every time I try to apply a resolution change, the thing freezes (I think just the video freezes but, not entirely certain). This happens before I even hit apply....so it never gets the chance to timeout and revert back to previous settings. I have to reset or cycle power to get it back.Quote:

Never tried win7 on mine, it just chugs with my old copy of XP Pro :D It's the only computer I have still on XP.
My only real complaint about 8 is interface with that awful start screen. SUCKS for a standard computer. Yes, I've used it and tried it, even after getting somewhat used to it it still sucks :p: 3rd party start menu options look good though, one I saw even makes it a hybrid setup of both tiles and classic start menu. Thought that was kind of nifty, but haven't had a machine to try it on.

i dont want to, win7 works amazingly well and i install it and it is what it should be.. i shouldnt have to turn off a stupid menu that only makes sense if you have an htpc or a touch screen... those should be things that you add later if wanted.

Overall I agree, but I've had several Vista machines after a few years just randomly start loving to disk thrash for no apparent reason and slow way down. I've got mine crunching for the challenge. After that I'm looking at using them as part of a small rendering farm. The 32bit restriction is a complication, but not insurmountable.
