X1800 Xl = Wow!

OK guys. Did some OCing last night.
This is not the first time i've overclocked this card. Just thought i'd do some more testing.

First i OCed just the ram. Got 650 default volts on mem. 700 would hang.
I bumprd up the GPU volts and could get 700 easily..just as ppl mentioned here. Mem clock is closely linked to GPU voltage.

I stopped with GPU at 625 (1.3v) and MEM at 750 (1.95/1.95). I couldn't achieve the mem OC previously with stock cooler. All tested pasted fine with no noticable artifacts. 01 / 03 / 05 / FEAR passed without any gliches.

I just noticed one thing in 3dmark01 in the single filtering test.
I saw white little dashes (-) sporadicly on the screen. I wonder if its the way these cards run? It also seems linked to volts on GPU? Its nothing like Spajdr mention. All test - including games don't show any artifacts.

Could u guys test this single filtering bug?

I remember your sapphire screenshots...that card was definitly faulty.

I only notice these white little dashes in 3dMark 01 single filtering.
So i suppose it could be how these cards are meant to run!? Who knows.

It could also be a bug with 01. As 03 doesn't so it at all.

What do u think it could be?

The only variance I have thus far noticed is if my room is too warm the core will lock up after 20 min or so @ 625. But 99% of the time its fine @ 625.

I hope my coming Sapphire X1800 XL won't have these problems and OC well :)

Have you noticed when it locks up really? Like at bootup and setting the voltages or after a few hours of gaming and such? Maybe you need to up the voltage to 1.25V Core to get it stabler, or try upping the memory to 1.95/1.95. I've had a few cases where that fixes some instability issues if its really on the boarder line so far.

What I get isn't quite like that. I don't get a whole bunch all over and infact I don't get any that stay static on the screen. I just get something small and black that flickers on and off periodically but only like 2-3 on the screen total and they are usually bunched together in the same area on the screen, not random and scattered. It happens very fast so you have to watch for them. It is only in FEAR. NOTHING else exhibits this.

Mine black boxes only happen when the cards warming up. After that I don't see it and like i've said before its 1 second tops it pops on the screen when it hits a 3D app and disappers never to be seen again unless its on another cold boot.

I see...but I thought you had the VF-700 ?? Should be hitting 650+ core ?

Same here, my cpu wont do anything more than 2.48 and i only have 512k cache as well.

Yup I do have the Fatal1ty version VF-700
I haven't tried go higher...yet. I will try pushing the limits latter. Im just waiting for better OC tool. Hopefully W1zzard will have his ready for us soon.

I can get 2.6ghz on CPU but then i have to lower my mem :(

someone do me a favour and run the DOT3 Bump mapping test in 3DMARK01 and let me know what happens? For me each and every time it gets to the end of the test it halts for about 3-4 seconds then 3DMARK just drops to desktop leaving it in 1024 x 768 resolution. I have tried more than once and each time it does the same thing in the same place. All else works fine including single texturing fill rate which DOESN'T show little white lines/dashes like others mentioned. IT seems these cores are very inconsistent and differnet things happen to differnt people under the same conditions as others which much varied results.

I actually ran the the test last night and all 3dmark 01 test passed.

How about ur pops? I had a problem similar to urs way bck and it was the PSU. Try it!

I have an Antec TC 550w here but it is only 20 pin ATX. My PSU is good and is only maybe 8 months old max. It runs my system very well and without issues. Things are just not the same with this card as it was for my last X800 card.

cantankerous, where did you buy your BBATI card? I am in ontario too and just wondering? Also what ic's did you get?

Friends got same mobo as me, which is DFI NForce4 UT Ultra D+
He got Opteron 146 at 2.95Ghz, me Opteron 144 at 2.75Ghz, anything else is same, when we install SP1 or SP2, speed goes down by like 25-30percent, for example tests in 3D Mark 03 - Mother Nature, he got 70fps, i got 88fps, single texturing and tests under it are same, when i installed SP2 i got same speed decrease any hints what to do? im running without any SP now and speed is fine, but when installing SP2, then its f00ked up again.

Intresting. Did you happen to disable some services that start up with SP2? Like security center and crap?

Edit: BTW I can't wait til I get my Opty 170 :)

Ya I slipstreamed my SP2 into windows, but I also disabled quiet a bit of services that run in the background that I don't use. But I still got firewall, antivirus and that crap still running. When I boot up I have roughly 36 tasks for 250Megs of ram give or take a few.

Well I narrowed it down to a voltage problem. Gave a small bump using the ATI overclocker tool and it no longer stalls and drops to desktop at this point.
