ASUS Official X79 Motherboards Support Thread

Hi all I have been trying on and off for several weeks to track down what's broken analogue audio out from the onboard realtek sound.

Optical audio out works fine but analogue is constant static and screeching. (no actual sound plays its just complete static and hissing/screeching.)
Ive tried rolling back drivers, bios and disabling various onboard components with no luck and am now at a complete loss.


I havent done any extreme 3930K OC past 5.1Ghz and only on water cooling. (no spills!)

Everything else works perfect and haven't experienced a single crash or BSOD in weeks.

Anyone have any advice?

Win7 64bit Ultimate SP1 everything up to date. (bios,drivers,etc)

Not heard of this before so if the system does it a bone stock defaults (no overclock), then I would suggest RMA.

Hello Raja,

I've tried running a Xeon (E5 2687W ES) on the Formula, but without success.
The debug display stops at 5A.
Can you help us there?

Xeon support is generally WS boards. Check the CPU QVL on that board, if it's not there then it is not supported. If you want to push for support, then contact ASUS Germany. If it's ES, then you may have other problems when uCode does not support in future. ES CPU should not be with end-user anyway.

I am going to buy a ASUS x79 board but which one? So far it is either sabertooth, formula or WS... Extreme us out if stock here. To be added are revo 2, 6990, 6970 and essense STX.

Hi Guys,

I was able to OC my CPU up to 4.8-4.9 for these benchmarks. In order to keep up I tried to OC to 5.0. This is when I smelled smoke and immediately turned off my PC. I have checked everywhere on my motherboard, psu and video cards and I cannot see any evidence of burning whatsoever. I even pulled the PSU out and could smell nothing. I have an Corsair 800D and the smell came from the back fan on the top of the case.. Now I am unable to boot at 4.8 at all. I can now only be stable at 4.5. In your opinion is this a motherboard issue? CPU issue? I have warranty for all of my stuff. Should I just keep going with my current 4.5 settings and consider myself lucky? Or, is my PC a ticking time bomb waiting to flame out?

I forgot to mention that my CPU is watercooled.

When you smell circuit smoke, more than likely it's the mobo. You may want to use a flashlight and check your board, particularly around the CPU socket area, may under a chipsink. Anyway, maybe it's not a crucial circuit or chip that burned, that's why your PC is still working. Though not sure of its longivity now.

This annoys me in peoples level of responsibility; you made the choice to dump a bunch of extra current and voltage into CPU and motherboard, and yet you assume you have it 'covered' under warranty.

I flamed out a 980x CPU in 13 months from overclocking.. I ate the dough as I made that conscious decision. You should man up and go buy new parts and re-think your decision on over-clocking if you expect others to pony up the expense of your actions.

Of course they wouldn't; as its already been shown you expect others to pay for your choices... Just be mentally prepared for the company to go "not covered under warranty." response.

I do not expect anyone to pay for this. I'll happily pay for it to be repaired if there is in fact an issue and Asus says it is not covered under warranty. I'd appreciate it is you would keep the bad day you are having to yourself instead of trying to ruin mine. Thanks.

These boards are "made" for OCing extremists. Mfrs know they will be tortured. They build them for one purpose, OCing! They should still be under warranty regardless if you don't intentionally hardwire a 120V directly to the board.

Advice: Don't buy these boards if you don't intend to do OCing. Go with chimp boards instead.

I'm fully aware of that, been over-clocking since the IBM AT (80286) days; but its always at their discretion.

New BIOS 1009 is out for X79 series.
Does anyone tested those? Any further detail of change log?

Just tell them it happened to smell like smoke at stock settings, they won't ask many questions.

NOBODY BUYS AN ASUS ROG MOTHERBOARD TO RUN IT AT STOCK! Just start an RMA it will be fine.

Maybe your board (Dual CPU) sabertooth or mine P9X79Pro Asus might pull the your not covered for OCing statement but I doubt it. Asus have posted screen shots of all there boards overcolcked all over the web and in my experience they are just not that petty, atleast not in the UK

I have checked the board multiple times. The smoke smell is gone and my machine runs fine. I am able to hit 4.8 again now after a windows 7 reinstall. I am pretty sure that if I rma'd the board as is they would just send it back saying it is fine because it boots up. I will have to take it out of my case to fully check for damage. I will post back if I find anything.

can you see the VRMs or are they underneath a heatsink ?

Latest X79 Pro bios seem to work, but my overclock is -100Mhz from before. Still no fix for the auto overclock that is causing so much pain when you change certain settings. I have found it repeatedly overclocking my RAM past its limit because I changed an unrelated setting elsewhere in the bios. Honestly Asus this "feature" is terrible, just remove it already.

What is the "unrelated" setting you are changing elsewhere in BIOS? Chances are the setting is related and that is what is causing you the problems. In which case it's easy enough just to run a manual OC without relying on the auto feature.

I would like the WS and the 550D, however, I can find no information on the inside motherboard mount for the 550D, there is only 1" between the 2 boards, has anyone any experience with this WS board and the 550D? Or can someone who's a builder, maybe let me know (please) if I am making a mistake here, I am quite handy and have no problem drilling some holes, or rigging up somewhere for the board to screw into but if that one inch makes a big difference then...well I know one inch can make all the difference in SOME situations ;)....but in THIS situation, what am I looking at? headache or will it matter?

Hey good question, When you look at the inside of the 550 the steel is raised up in a smooth curve right at the edge of the motherboard so I doubt more than the standard ATX size will fit. Had the board tray been flat well you know the rest.
I have the Corsair 650d and that is my best case to date, loads of room and great to work in and thats me comming from 4 previous Lian Li cases. Imo Corsair cases rock

I'm looking to assemble a new X79 rig, upgrading from MaxFormulaX38/Q6600 (What great combo!) now I used to buy the top board so I'm looking at X79 Deluxe, Sabertooth, the WS edition and the RIVE.
I want 8 DDR slot, I don't plan exotic overclock so the RIVE look like a wastle of $$$ and time to tune it. The Sabertooth has crap NICs, the WS is the most expensive but 2 Intel NIC and support for ECC DDR (I'm thinking to buy the Xeon E16xx because in my book keeping tons of RAM no ECC stable isn't that easy , think about at 32 GB, 8x4GB), but it's 3.2Ghz with ECC or 4.2-4.5 without ECC, a sizable difference.

What are the under the hood difference between these model ?

In last few years I've lost a little the touch with the latest release of Asus, so i'm a little confused from this large lineup.
The stability is the most important factor with 8 DDR slot filled.

I suggest you look at the P9X79 Deluxe. It clocks nearly as well as the RIVE without all the hardcore OC features and comes loaded with features. I have one in my son's rig and we love it.
