sweet CPU Stephen :)
Is it the 290fsb chip stephen?
Yes it is....we'll see soon if it can reach that speed....someone really needs to come up with a Vcore mod that allows for higher than 1.64V. This cpu seems to be more limited now by vcore as opposed to FSB.....Quote:

Ok, tested the cpu last night on my autocascade and I've learned something new.....-80C insulation doesn't work too well @ -100C temps :p: I'll have to do some more insulation before trying again since the board is acting up. FWIW, I reached 295x13 for a short bit before the board locked up and didn't want to boot again  ~-103C IDLE temps, -102C LOADED
I thought your Auto was running -150° now or something? Hurry up and insulate that rig properly ;)
Those temps were for for fun ;) (It actually made it down to -162C). With a decent capacity, the numbers will have to be quite different. The temps I reported in my last post are from an probe in the cold plate on top of the core. Actual evap temps should be ~-115C....Quote:

Last night, I found that I didn't have any more Ceramique left so I ended up running the yonah without re-insulating the board as I had originally planned - BAD IDEA :p: I ended up spending the entire night pulling my hair out trying to figure out wtf was causing the cpu to act so erratic. I messed with timings, voltages, memory slots, etc. - everything I could think of but I was only able to manage a few completed Spi runs @ NOWHERE near the cpu's top speed  :

These runs were basically done a couple of minutes before I shut down for the night. As I reached around the autocascade to turn the unit off, I noticed what had been causing my frustration for the last couple of days  .....
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/795/leak0ex.jpg
This wasn't just a thin layer of frost -> rather it was a SOLID chunk of ICE that took ~5 minutes to melt with a hair-dryer on the "HIGH HEAT" setting :wth:. Luckily the hardware seems to be in good condition still, so hopefully I'll be able to get in a few nice runs sometime this weekend. The cpu's got quite a bit more left in her - this was done earlier in the night, most likely when that iceberg was still in it's infancy :p:

4ghz is within reach
300FSB!!
Congrats
Amazing stuff Stephen. I got an "iceberg" as well in exactly the same spot... I don't think it caused me any trouble since I sorta always ran with some ice in various spots.
Now, isn't it nice to move to a platform where lower temps get you a higher FSB rather than a lower one? (HTT) ;)
LOL...this wasn't any ordinary iceberg, this one could have sunk the Titanic as well :p: . Stuck a hair -dryer on it and it basically didn't start melting for a good 2-3 minutes. I have a feeling it was wreaking havoc on my Vcore as it was all over the place (even for the Aopen). Also, I have a feeling it had something to do with my problems with the setup on my last boot attempt. Basically, I opened up clockgen and tried to set the FSB. Well, somehow the cpu clocked DOWNWARDS and was stuck @ 1700Mhz no matter what I did. I tried the Aopen OC utility but the FSB wouldn't budge and upon re-opening clockgen, ALL the OC buttons were gone :wth: only the "Clocks" button was available.......Quote:

Well, I can confidently state that the Aopen motherboards are some of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever used. The voltages on the board fluctuate like crazy, the overclocking is erratic, and there are still quite a few bugs that weren't worked out before production. It's just too bad that this gem of a cpu is stuck on such a POS mobo  This particular Yonah DOES NOT appear to have a FSB limit.....

Wasn't really sure what I was doing being an Intel noob so I just raised
voltages and fsb for this first time. (13x231 = 3005Mhz)
Ram timings are stock and a fresh install of
untweaked XP. Used the stock AOpen heatsink that came with the board. Hot
summer weather here didn't help, I think I could use a better heatsink.
Once I figure out how all this works I'll stick it under the mousepot... haha by
then everyone will be on Conroe ;).
http://www.jpop.com/gocchin/yonahfirst.png
LOL....ocing Intel cpu's isn't what I'd call "brain-surgery". There aren't the dozens of memory timings to figure out along with additional mobo settings, OS tweaks and other little nuances which give AMD clocking it's personality. Seems there's only really a couple of things to know with Intel.........Quote:

In all honesty, if the cpu wasn't able to put up some nice benchmarks, I'd be pulling my hair out either from frustration with this POS Aopen board or boredom from "point-and-click" overclocking :D
I hear you Stephen... when I first booted into the AOpen bios I was like... "that's it?? where are all the settings??" I think I do need better cooling. Gautam had this cpu up to 250mhz on air and 280 under DI... I was having trouble going above 235 but the cpu temps were at 50C in the bios... either a crap mount or I really just need a better cooler... :)Quote:

Actually just noticed the part about your temps. That'd be the root of the problem. I was quite literally in the low 20's on air, even with 1.5v.
The board has given me many reasons to pull my hair out despite the nice benchies.
Well, I have to say the VCCA mod may not be for everyone ;) I did the mod to the board and tried up to 2.3V vcca only to find that the cpu actually would go HIGHER @ default vcca. With the mod on, I had troubles even clocking above 280fsb. After removing the mod, BENCHING @ 280+FSB was accomplished. Of course there's times which I'm bewildered why the system basically would randomly reboot itself @ speeds which I can do on air :wth:Quote:

Very impressive, a lot higher than I bothered to try. Can't wait to see it on the mousepot. Btw, 250x13 is 3250, not 3200. ;)
You'd be surprised though, 2 gigs does perform real well clock for clock, even with looser timings. Tight timing 2 gig obviously is the ticket, if you can get your hands on it. You're performing exactly like a 1 gig set would at 4-3-2-4, a little bit better actually.
Hehehe...just imagine if Gocchin and I actually KNEW how to tweak Intel :p:Quote:

I had problems with 1.03C and DI. It wasn't smooth at all. It literally took me 6 hours of benching to pull up to those speeds after repeatedly crashing and stuff. BIOS wasn't the issue, it problem lay in booting into windows. Whenever it was subzero for me, it would show up as "125 C/1f" in BIOS and would just restart instead of going into windows, at which point I'd need to wait with the pot empty for about 20-30 minutes (yes, you read right) and the system running in BIOS, for temps to creep up high enough. :-/ Yes, there were plenty of times when I wished the damn thing just put out more heat...or that the board weren't so finicky.Quote:

Stephen, you got some slick timings for sure. I find Windows utterly untweakable for pi on these boards. Any reg tweaks or whatever would just hurt the score. :-/ Virgin Win2k3 is what I found the quickest...and what I take it you're using.
Hmmmmm....that was cool :wth: I must be psychic.....:D
Yep, thats the stupid thing. On 1.03B I had that crap. Cursor BS while trying to get into BIOS, BUT it WOULD get into windows. 1.03C was the opposite. COme to think of it though, it would be more convenient to use 1.03B and set everything before hand.Quote:

I'm definitely an intel noob but this point and click = fast scores is pretty fun... though I may be changing my mind this weekend if the board does not cooperate with me ;)

Don't use clockgen if your voltages are fluctuating a lot or if you're going simply for high fsb. I boot @ 13x275 and then usually clockgen to 13x284 and work from there. Aopen's utility allows you to push the FSB on the cpu with very little Vcore fluctuation as opposed to clockgen - which causes the vcore to dip quite a bit more (sometimes causing lock-ups). But I'm just too impatient to OC with a remote control at times :wth:Quote:

I was never able to do high boots on DI, because of my method of booting hot. At temps cold enough to get me into the 270's, I wouldn't have been able to get into Windows.
It's either the very extreme autocascade temps or the tcore mod that's enabling Stephen to do so...but I'll let him field that one.
IMHO, only use the remote control and nothing else to OC. Very irritating, but effective.
How are you setting the FSB in bios if you can't enter it? The mobo will do that to me every once in awhile as well. I think it may not be able to handle the FSB set or it's just being picky at the time. TBH, I think you may need to do the tcore mod as it sounds like your bios may be having issues with the temps.Quote:

It's not the FSB, it's the temperature I'm curious about. I had severe difficulty booting at anything subzero. Mike says that LN2 temps are no problem, neither are SS temps, it's just DI that falls into a miserable spot.
But your autocascade turned off should get temps very similar to the ones I had...hrmmm...
For me temps between ~ -45 to - 80C were impossible to boot into Windows - upwards and downwards were OK.
Isn't 1.03C or 1.04 the better BIOS ?
I have no problems booting into the bios at all. It's when I get into windows that whatever I set in the bios say, 13x260 suddenly becomes 13x200 in windows. And if I'm lucky and I can get into windows at 13x260, I try using clockgen to go to 261 and fsb resets to 100 or hangs!! It must be the remote that did it for you Gautam with this chip... I unfortunately have no patience for it. ;) Especially with my E6700 ES arriving Monday. :)
I'm breaking from DI and trying cold water for a bit on this Yonah... :)
Water is much more cooperative... :D 260 looks like the max on water... even 261, windows won't post.

looks like some problems with fsb :S i can't go to 231
Unlucky. Mine stuck at 233 FSB so at least i hit the 3ghz.
Freon enabled 240 FSB... or at least it did till condensation blew the mobo... At least thats my guess as the AOpen will no longer post :(
Hehe and this is strange because the same proc. and mobo were tested and (3ghz on air WOOT)
so i don't know what to do i will try different bios
PS:How can i flash aopen mobo form windows?
The Bioses come as a windows exe file that includes the windows flashing software. Just run it in windows and it flashes.Quote:

anybody knows what is wrong with my machine (it was tested to 3 ghz on air and i can't achieve that even on water:S)
I found that general cooling is need all around the socket. If you are now on water with no fan it will prob be holding you back. Get some air blowing in the socket area.
hmm... why is that?
i have max 30°c on yonah :S
Just touch some of the IC's near the case rear side of the Socket, they get very hot. When you have air cooling you are blowing air on these components as well as the CPU itself. By going to Water you are not cooling these anymore. It just may give you that extra few Mhz
ok i wil put 2 x 800mm to it :D
