Testing / comparing : Intel D975XBX2 / Asus P5B DX ***56K WARNING***

gtj, have you already given your results to intel?

I love the D975XBX2 as a piece of hardware, its an Intel (wee!) and its so puristic and stable, it makes me so mad that they still havent managed to disable C1E.

If they dont fix it, can i declare my board as "broken" (since a feature it SHOULD have is not there) and return it to the (online)store?

I might just get an X38-Board if Intel doesnt fix the D975XBX2.

Asus (P5WDH) is not an option since i only had problems with them in the past and there quality-level is lowering with every board they release...

MSI and Foxconn suck, the ABIT is said to have BIOS-problems.... Aww, like the D975XBX2 hasnt... :/

I was on the phone with Intel for half an hour this afternoon while they were goofing with it on their system. After getting the company line about how overclocking is bad I think they got it. The BIOS team has the issue now. Who knows, they may actually fix it.

Just one more question guys? Does speedfan work with the BX2? What utils do you guys use for monitoring temps/volts etc?

EDIT: IDU sucks.

So you did talk to the BIOS-team or any of the developers in person?

Maybe I should call them aswell, its always good to have some pressure on them, though im not a native speaker of English i would try to get on the line with them.

It was tier 2 support I talked to. I'm just grateful they had a system they could play with while I was on the phone with them.

Be very specific about the problem so they route it correctly. Something like...

On the Intel 975XBX2 motherboard runinng BIOS 2634, disabling C1E on the BIOS maintenance screen doesn't actually disable C1E on the processor.

You just got to like this... Over the years there's been thousands of post about why speedstep, C1E, or whatever doesn't work while OCing... And although there's a valid argument to having bios functions perform as advertised, we have the best of both worlds and everyone has there panties in a wad over nothing... :D OC to max yet idle at stock MHz and control temps... Ummm guys, maybe I'm just blind, but where do I switch off the watchdog feature? What is it called? I'm not seeing it in my BIOS.

Anyone getting decent luck with the new 2634 BIOS? I couldn't get to 400 FSB with my E6600 so I tried the 2507 BIOS. It was actually worse. With the 2634 I was able to get to 375 FSB @ 1.5 vCore. I couldn't get 350 FSB stable in the 2507. I tried all sorts or different vMCH and vFSB just to check it out.

I should also mention I happened to get a bum F Steeping E6600 with a default vCore of 1.325. :( I just got it in from newegg. Was checking up on the new BIOS and seeing what others thought of it.

Shut your system down and move the mobo jumper to position 2 or "config". The jumper is near the bottom of your memory slots. Then when you post go into the BIOS it will be on the first page. You may disable C1E here as well if you wish. Save. Power off and move the jumper back to position 1 or its default.

Anybody with overclocking problems needs to kill that feature. Some may want to disable C1E and EIST because they reduce the system voltage and lower the multi in an idle state. That could cause freezing or crashing in rare cases with a high OC. YMMV.

Hey guys who has tried the BX2 with 4 1gb sticks of ram under a 32 bit OS? I am wondering how much will be "seen". I know I will lose some and some mobos do better than others with this. Usually a "memory remapping" BIOS setting helps.

I am on Vista 32 bit and have two more 1gb sticks incoming. I may install Vista x64 if I lose too much and I hate to lose the compatibility of the 32 bit version.

I run 4x 1GB sticks in Vista 32. Windows reports 3325MB (3324MB in Task Manager) available.

On a side note, I don't think this board really loves my OCZ Titanium Alpha modules. It won't boot at stock memory voltages :( Especially with 4 sticks in the slots (needs more voltage). Lucky that I have 2 sticks of G.Skill HZ's :rolleyes: sitting around to boot with if I mess with the BIOS. My Asus P5WDH was the same way though, so I firmly place blame on OCZ ;)

Interesting. Think I will try it a while in 32bit with the /3gb switch enabled. Most programs are written in a 32 bit environment and aren't going to take advantage of more than that anyway.

4x1GB under XP Pro. I only see 3.0 GB's.

Also, do not use the 3GB switch as it will cause you problems.

I just purcased a XBX2 "bulk" to see if it`s more stable than my AW9DMAX. Hope it does more than fsb 400 orthos blend stable.

What is the best bios ?
Is there a winflash utility for this board?

Ok perhaps you can help me with my frustration. Hard disk access can kill a game's performance and this often happens in a lot of MMOs. I am trying to limit this as much as possible. I am not talking about level loading. I understand that.

I am wanting to do whatever I can to get my system to use available ram rather than resorting to paging to a disk when playing said games. I could turn off the page file and I have heard that can lead to other problems as well.

I am experimenting with playing some on line games with superfetch off to see if that helps.

So how do I stop my system from using the hard disk so much when I have plenty of ram? I was thinking allowing the application more than 2gb might help.

Would it be better to just go x64 Vista? Some times I feel like I have 512mb ram. I mean IMO there is way too much HD access for the amount of installed ram I have. This behavior is only out of control in on line games and not in Oblivion or others.

If I put another card in the 2nd PCI-E slot the video drops to 8X on the 1st.

Ext PEG is the pci-e video card.

The 975X chipset supports 1 x16 or 2 x8. Can't change it.

2333 is the generally accepted most stable. Intel gives you the following options...

Recovery BIOS Update [BX2634P.BIO] - A .BIO file to be used for BIOS recovery process, regardless of operating system. In the unlikely event that a BIOS update is interrupted, it is possible the BIOS may be left in an unusable state. Use the Recovery BIOS update to recovering from this condition. It requires a blank floppy diskette or CD.

ISO Image BIOS Update [BX2634P.ISO] - Bootable ISO image BIOS update; this is the recommended method to update the BIOS on systems running Linux*. It requires a blank CD and a read/writeable CD drive.

Express BIOS Update [BX97520J.86A.2634.EB.EXE] - Self-extracting Windows*-based update file includes Software License Agreement and the utility for updating the BIOS. It is designed to be used on Windows* systems. This method is the most commonly used.

Go to the current BIOS web page. At the bottom there's a link to all previous versions.

let it be with the black screen for a minute, then manually restart it. maybe helps. the badaxe2 tends to be a slow poster and sometimes needs to be hand-resetted.

Leave it auto. Unless you also have a regular PCI video card, this option doesn't do anything.

Thanks Blacklash! I have disabled C1E but left watchdog on. Still no luck with OC'ing. I can run stock no problems, then I OC to 3GHz, no problems. Then maybe 3 reboots later or even 1 reboot later I get OC failed. Like the BIOS loses settings or doesen't save them properly. Could this be the watchdog feature playing funny buggers? I'd like to leave it on if possible because without it, recovering from a failed oc is a NIGHTMARE. I have to remove the CMOS battery.

The watchdog is severely broken. You're going to have to disable it to get anything serious out of the board. Yeah it's a pain to keep moving the jumper but it's the only way. If you have a 3-pin fan extension cable you can plug it into the header and use the jumper on the end of the cable. Or you could wire up a switch.

EDIT: You shouldn't have to remove the battery. Just move the config jumper and power cycle.

I have Bios 2634, and I disabled C1E in the bios. If this didn't really disable it, what does that mean in terms of overclocking or other performance? And if I really need it disabled, how do I - short of installing a different bios?

You can turn it off from Windows with RMClock or Everest. It's only a pain when you're tuning/benchmarking and even then, it's minor. Long term, it's a good thing since it will keep your temps down when the cpu is idle.

So, should I go back into the bios and enable it - just in case Intel fixes this with a later bios?

Also, I downloaded the TAT and turned it on while using Orthos. The temps for both cores varied in the 50 degrees, occasionally ramping up to 58 and 59. When I turned off Orthos and then started the workload analysis tool in TAT, the temps jumped into the low 60s. Is the workload analysis a better stress test than Orthos? What is the maximum temps at which point I should back off a bit on the overclocking?

i got everything going in the bios. set it to RAID
then rebooted... hit CTL - I and setup a raid volume.
everything looked correct in the bios after that.

now i have 2x36 raptos that show up as 72gig
and 1 320gig drive

i popped in the Vista x86 cd. booted up. plugged in my code.
then it says "where do you want to install vista"

i have 2 options:
0 unallocated space 68gig
1 unallocated space 320gig

i picked the 68 & hit "new" for partition. created with the entire size.

then i get "this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disc"

hit "next"

"windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria"

ugh. suggestions? i tried loading to my 320gig storage with no luck as well.
F6 method is not necessary, right? nor is loading any raid drivers at this stage?

Nah don't worry about C1E right now.

Tat definitely does stress the cores more than orthos but doesn't test your memory at all so orthos is a better all around stress tester.

Your temps are not bad at all. If you start seeing anything higher than the mid 60's under an orthos test, I'd back off a little.

Anything above 70 is getting dangerous. 85 is pretty much fatal.

No drivers required.

First, double check that the array is the first boot drive in BIOS. If it isn't make it the first one and try again. If that doesn't work...

Boot the CD again but press "repair".
Open a command window.
type...
diskpart
select disk 0
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs quick
assign
exit

Now reboot and try again.

yes, the array was the first.
i just deleted the array, then recreated it... (same info)
then loaded windows again... this time, i didnt hit "advanced" and didnt create a partition... i just hit "next" now its copying files.. hmm
ill keep ya posted. thanks :)

ps: my cpu temps in the bios are at 30C thats normal, right? i was worried i messed up installing the cpu/zalman

I agree with you that over 70c is bad, but doubt 85c is fatal.... I mean, 85c is the Tjunction temp, your core throttle down at that point or your cpu freeze. I got mine at 85c while doing some benching and it just froze. I would defenitly not run that for more then small benching sessions but i was wondering if you can actually kill your chip with 85c.... The reason why i have doubts is that QX6700 are actually 2 E6700 stuck together and their tjunction temp are 100c and while running them at stock speed with stock cooler 85c load is "normal"...

Oh btw anyone here plannig to do crossfire with some R600s on this board?

Not fatal for you, or I under controlled circumstances, but for those less experienced "pretty much fatal" is probably true. :)

BTW the default state for the thermal protection is "disabled". Check Everest or RmClock and you'll see it disabled.

You need to set all settings to default, changing only the watchdog/c1e settings and successfully boot before you try to change anything else. After successfully booting at default settings you can reboot and start tuning :cool:

I have just started tweaking after loading XP & 71 critical updates.:)
With cpu @ 333 x 9 and TAT running 90% workload in the background coretemp is showing 55*C & TAT reads consistantly 12 degrees higher @ 68-69*c. VID is set @ 1.325v. Idle temps are 29*c:banana:

Hehehe it's as soon as you go over 334FSB is when the problems start. ;)

I have tried bios 2333/2507/2634, all bios can run 400MHz X 9 without any problem, as long as you disable watchdog in maintennance mode.

My Default vCore is almost what your's is at 3.6 Ghz. Stock for mine is 1.325. I have to run at 1.515 I think it is to be stable at 375 FSB.

I was wondering is vMCH and vFSB kind of CPU dependant? I had to go to 1.65 vMCH to be stable at 365 FSB but at 375 I was getting random reboots. Takeing it down to 1.6v solved it. After I do a through run of Orthos overnight I'm going to try lowering it and vFSB some and seeing if I can't get it stable.

BTW. I'm using the newest version of Coretemp and I get same temps in Vista and XP doing a Orthos run. So I would say TAT is off in Vista. I haven't run TAT in Vista yet. I think Vista install is by far the easiest Windows install I've ever done to date. If it wasn't for the 8800 I wouldn't have had to install any drivers.

Their is an option in the BIOS I can't remember what the exact name is but it's like ASP or something. Like 2nd for the last tab on the right side. What is that for? I disabled it. Didn't seem to help with anything.

try this...

increase vcore to 1.5500
drop vmch to 1.6
set 400 for FSB
force 266/667 for reference and memory frequency.

See what happens.

If that is all, shame on Intel...

They could at least have said that someones working on a fix for that, or tell me that they dont consider it a Bug since everyone should want to have C1E enabled and that i can go :banana::banana::banana::banana: myself.

Lets just wait for the next BIOS-release, IF there is going to be one :/

More than C1E bug, I want unlocked downward mults!!!

I have to admit that this has been the MOST MOST MOST stable C2D board I've own to date... but not being able to use 9x or 8x to test my mem and PUSH the FSB has been annoying. I've tried crystalcpuid but can't get that to work properly (yes, i've said this 3 times now in this post and i will repeat myself as necessary until intel releases a bios that gives me downward mults)

so i've decided to try another board :)

but right now after messing around .. now i cant even get into the bios .. i tried everything .. the pc just turns on and the screen never comes on .. ive tried everything

I've got a weird issue with my Bad Axe 2 board.

Upon post, I get normal post screen, can get into bios, change everything I like.

It's just that I can't get the board to boot any more, gets stuck at "BA" or EB" in the lower left corner and never gets past that any more.

I also tried changing bios through recovery mode : doesn't work. Board stays with same bios as well :? Seems to do the recovery from floppy, after that nothing... same bios still... Nothing wrong with cmos battery either : tried changing it, no difference.

Any ideas anyone ?

Well, BA is the search for removable boot media. Any USB storage devices attached? Something wrong with the CD/DVD?

What happens if you disable boot from USB, Optical and Removable in BIOS?

Just changed cpu, tried pci graphics, different memory... no boot...

I also removed my kvm switch, and about everything else as well, just 1 stick of memory now, cpu (E6700), PS2 keyboard and 1900XT : gets stuck at message "94" now (clearing keyboard buffer).

I'm just completely at a loss here at the moment ?? First time any bad axe gives up on me... The board just seems completely ok, just doesn't "move on" :(

PS : Jep, jumper in revocery mode : bios doesn't change...

It takes a while to do a bios recovery. If you have the .bio file on a diskette, insert it, remove the config jumper, and completely power cycle the box. It will boot at least 2 times on its own before the recovery is complete and eventually you'll see the messages about loading the firmware.

I can NOT use CL3 on my 2*1GB D9DQW set at any VDIMM (2,2-2,6V), at any VMCH (1,6-1,7V) on 1066 strap (266 ref.freq.)

Sounds normal to me unless its handpicked highly binned ram you really wouldnt see CL3 on just any DDR2 stick, if you want guaranteed drop $450 usd on Corsair 6400C3DF

I've got a stereo speaker configuration.
Firstly, I installed the sigmatel drivers but I had serious panning problems. I guess that the card was configured to something like 5.1 or 7.1.
I tried to select stereo speakers from with in control panel, but it didnt seem to affect/solve the panning problem.
So I installed the IAS version, set the card to stereo speaker (from within IAS) and voila, the panning problem disappeared.
Howerver, I hate IAS, in fact I hate all the applications that dont have an uninstall option.
Is there any other way to solve the panning problem and/or a way to properly uninstall IAS ?

I can do 500MHz 3-3-3-3 2,6V on 1333 strap (333 ref.freq.) :D

Now up to 366fsb:) cpu v @ 1.5v, mchv@ 1.6v, ddr2@ 1.84, memory set @ 333 / 667 running @ 733. IDCC temp reads at idle is 38*c / core temp reports 29*c.
At full cpu load from TAT temp is (tat=83*c)(idcc=78*c)(coretemp=69*c)
Tried 400 fsb @ 1.6vcore this morning no post:mad: Will try for 375fsb next.
Very pleased with the results so far as performance increase from old pentium2 400mhz are phenominal. :banana:

Just recived my BX2.

I have one problem so far:

My waterblock (Swiftech G4 Storm) won`t fit on this board cause of the blue mosfetsinks on top. :slapass:

Maybe I should try air-cooling instead…
Has anyone tested a Scythe Ninja on the BX2?

The regular Storm works just fine, the G4 Storm is a bit different from the retail version.

Is anybody having their multiplier changing back and forth? My E6400 runs at with the 6x multiplier until I use a cpu intensive program with the latest bios. I have all of the options disable in the bios unless I forgot to shut something off.

Disabling C1E in BIOS doesn't actually disable it on the processor. Never has. BIOS bug already reported to Intel. You can turn it off from Windows with RmClock or Everest (but it won't stick after a reboot). Few people noticed until CPUz 1.39 came out. Previous versions were actually reporting the max multiplier not the actual.

It says with the CPUz 1.39 that it is running at 3.5ghz all of the time. But with CPUz 1.39.1 it says different.

But again, if I deside to go with aircooling.

download rmclock and you will see that it is still enabled in windows.

once you disable it and hit apply, you will see your clock speed get set to what it is in bios.

Do you think C1E can cause instability issue if not correctly disabled? EIST Speedstep is off, thats the thing that changes the voltage while idle/load but C1E if it only changes your multiplier it shouldnt be a problem for stability ? You only waste voltage for lower speed but you save a bit of power consuption because of the lower Mhz even if you have the same vcore.

you can use a regular 3pin fan there.

C1E drops the multiplier to 6. But what about voltaje? Drops to a fixed value or is it dinamic acording to the vcore set in BIOS? Both P5W DH and DFI iCFX3200 only drop the multiplier when C1E enabled, voltaje is the same all time.

C1E will change multipler AND voltage. As Intel describes it, when both cores go into a HALT state, C1E first lowers the multiplier, then lowers the voltage. When they come out of HALT state, C1E raises the voltage first, then the multiplier. HOWEVER, I have observed that if you've set the core voltage to something other than default, C1E seems to only change the multiplier.

I haven't seen any stability issues related to C1E but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

To the guy (nightprowler 77) that's asking about the Scythe... I have an Infinity fitted to mine. If that fits, the ninja should I'm thinking.

I was playing around with OC'ing on the weekend and did notice this. I was using CPU-Z 1.9 and thought it was a bug. So it's actually reporting the speed correctly? Another thing I tried was to clock the chip up to 3.6GHz and couldn't manage it, even with 1.55V set in the BIOS. Sure this CPU should be able to manage 3.6??? I even set vMCH to 1.6 and vFSB to 1.5 (i think). Could this have something do to with the C1E feature?

That is an "Auxilary PCI-E power connector" that is designed to give a little additional boost to the PCI-E bus I believe, I would NOT hook a fan up to it, although it probably wouldn't hurt anything, but the fan wouldn't work and you never know...

Getting slower then expected RAID transfers off the ICH7 measured by HDtach.

3 Seagate 320GB 7200.10 RAID 0, and I'm stuck at almost a flat line 122MB/s, something not right there(burst is 256). BIOS setting, HD firmware, driver? Is this common? It's unacceptable performance. I have seen the ICH7 doing much faster then this, so it's something I need or am overlooking.
