OCZ PC4000 EB Platinum.....Initial Testing

Hi, this my first post here, but I have been following this post since the OCZ PC4000 EB Platinum came out and this forum is how I found out about them. I had 2x1 Gig Ballistix before these and they ran good but I have had a better oc on these for some reason. I have Posted on these OCZ PC4000 EB Platinum to 283 1:1 but it was not stable in SP 2004 so I backed them down to 270.
I found the sweet spot on mine 270 1:1 3-3-2-8 I can run lower 3-3-2-6 T1 but after about 6 or 7 hours using SP 2004 I will get an error so I backed them back a bit, I think with a different divider I can get them Higher stable, But I love these OCZ PC4000 EB Platinums and they dont get hot like my Ballistix did, so im very happy with them. I am new to this MB too,this is my first DFI and I love it, so I will keep playing around to see how high I can get them Stable with maybe a divider, im new to all this overclocking stuff on these 64 Opterons but man this opty runs great.

Pyr0 i have a 7800tx and a crt and i had to use the dvi-yga adapter for my crt is it possible you are using that and don't have it screwed in well?

hi bigjohns97 i've just double checked, and yeah, it's secure it's screwed in as far as it will go
i think i'm pretty fubar'd as it doesn't seem like a very common problem :rolleyes:
at the moment i'm lost for ideas :confused:
i'm thinking of trying to get an opteron 170 or 175 to see if it's my cpu :(
then if that doesn't work, maybe a new mobo :shrug:

Great to hear, and welcome to Xtreme!!! 270 is a nice spot for these ram's. When I was testing them out in the begining, mine were alot like yours. 283 super pi stable but 272 3d stable. Personally I run mine at 265x11 24/7. The extra mghz makes up for the lower mem clock.

Guys, the limit with the EB kits are the memory controllers.

Using a Venice I maxed at 265, using a San Diego 259 and using a Opteron 146 I've managed 270 1:1 !!! The CPU affected the max 1:1 the sticks could run, with my current Opteron I haven't even found the limit of the sticks yet.

I have posted that OC report (as part of a little "bundle test") couple weeks ago but I thought that I will inlude it in this thread as well... I hope it's fine with you, Ryder. I was very pleased with those sticks, despite slightly lower clocks compared to some of other guys here. Straight plug-n-play modules :)
Unfortunately, I was not able to do any 3D tests at that time due to lack of decent video card. But I truly believe that difference between 3D and "desktop" tests some of you are seeing could be reduced by tweaking... ;) Anyway, here we go:

SPi32M i Sandra @ 250x11=2750MHz 5-2-3-3.0-1T

SPi32M i Sandra @ 260x11=2860MHz 5-2-3-3.0-1T

SPi32M i Sandra @ 268x11=2948MHz 6-2-3-3.0-1T

As you can see, 268MHz was as far as that one particular kit went in SPi32M. Remarkable is that it only needed 2.7v (2.74v w DMM) to achieve that. I compared my result with few others I could find here on XS and it seems a tad low. There were few others that seemed to be able to bench SPi32M all the way up to almost 290MHz. Well, not the kit I had, though... Something worth mentioning is that above 2.7v that kit would not gain anything as far as full stability goes. That confirms that bumping up voltage does not always translate to easy gains. Oh well :)

So, it was time for some more serious task ;) I went back to 265MHz and there are results.

1000% Memtest for Windows 1832MB used @ 265x11=2915MHz 5-2-3-3.0-1T

4 hours of SP2004 LargeFFT 1727MB used @ 265x11=2915MHz 5-2-3-3.0-1T

Some divider action at the end...

SPi32M i Sandra @ 292x11=3213MHz div183/DDR530 5-2-3-3.0-1T

No problems with running a divider. Just change it and go :)

I love these Opterons :D My Vennie 3200 gave up after 1 week at 1;1 255 HTT it wont run in T1 or Dual Channel any more, it drove me crazy trying to figure out what was wrong , I did not know if I had a bad MB or Ram or CPU but as it turns out the memory controller in my vennie is messed up. This Opty runs it GREAT, I play cod2 all night at 270 1;1 and I am currently at 285 with a divider and seems to run great this way too. I played with it a bit when I got up today testing different settings on my Ram. Well worth the money. :woot:

well, im proof that its not always the memory controller. My first kit i got wouldnt go past 251 stable. My new kit will go to 265+.

if the memory was past the limit surely i'd get errors
if the cpu was past the limit surely i'd get errors

the only thing i can think of is power fluctuations, either by the mobo or the psu
but since i reduced the load on the psu by stripping the pc to the bare minimum....
could it be my board then?

I really doubt your problem is memory related. It might be a graphics card driver issue that seem to kick in at that particular point. Have you tried unistalling graphics drivers all together and see what happens then? Or a different video card?
I had this one issue when I was playing with 2GB kits couple of weeks ago. It ONLY was happening with 2GB, not with 1GB or 512MB kits. I was experiencing massive file corruption while downloading large files of the Internet (like game demos) or moving huge RAR archives over the network at close to MAX stable memory speed. Reducing memory speed by about 5-7MHz magically fixed the problem. I spend few hours trying to figure it out and guess what. I changed one setting in On-board Network Card's Advanced Properties and problem is now completely gone :)

In other words, I would focus on some driver or hardware conflict rather than memory itself... Might be a tough nut but sometimes you just need to try to figure it out yourslef. I admit, it's pretty weird case, though :shrug:

i've only been able to test with a 6600gt, and a 7800gt, with both cards i had the same prob :(
this happens in xp64 with the 6.66, and 6.69 chipset drivers and with the 78.01, 78.03, 81.85, 81.89, and 81.94 gfx drivers
it also happens in xp32 with the 6.39, 6.66, and 6.70 chipset drivers and with the 77.56, 78.01, 78.03 and 81.85 gfx drivers

all in various combinations LOL

i've also tried calling it names and cursing loudly, but that didn't seem to work either :D

it's driving me nuts, i feel like i'm going crazy :slobber:

Pyro, have you tried any other kind of ram to see if the problem still exsist?

unfortunately i don't have any other high speed memory to test with apart from some crappy pc4000 geil(hynix) platinum

What happens if you set the 180 ram divider? Can you then go above 260?
If yes, then I think your ram is just causing some type of error or data corruption, indicating it can't keep up at that speed.

That has been the biggest effect with this kit is in 3D...so its stands to reason that it might just effect the Video subsystem even when your not in 3D.

yes if i set my fsb to 270, and use a 180 divider on the memory it boots, and works fine (memory running at 245MHz)
so you don't think an opteron 175 would do me any good?

i really wanted to be able to run the memory at say 270MHz, especially after reading the reports and paying so much for overclocking memory :slobber:

I have no idea why we see these effects...maybe someone who can trace all the electrical signals and data flow could tell us ;)

An opteron might get you higher...Dnottis' top speed changed with CPU (6-8 posts above)...I have hit the same with Venice or Clawhammer...don't have an X2 or Opty to try.

Remember....results will vary...not all sticks are created equal unfortunately. We can't bin the IC's so all will run the same speed....they would cost you $500 a pair probably and we would have to throw away to many chips :(

In the end CPU speed is what gives you the performance....If you ran 260*10 stable 1:1....but were able to run 270 or 275*10 stable with the 180 divider....check it out...I bet your Game score or Bench is higher....but I could be wrong.

What are the memory integers (divider levels I guess you call them) on this ram? I mean is it 500 then 433, 400, etc, etc. I want to know if put the memory down one notch what I'll need to put my fsb at to get as close to 500 as possible.

I don't understand the question...the ram has nothing to do with dividers...they are provided by the motherboard....there are no such "levels" related to a particular type of ram.

Seriously, it's absolutely ridiculous. I've ordered from three places who claimed to be in stock and all were like sorry and we have no ETA. That's perhaps what bothers me the most, no one has any idea when they'll be able to restock.

Im gonna jump in here and defend OCZ here. OCZ does the R&D for a product. Reviews go out and once the ICs are revealed everyone else follows suit. Why can't you buy them? Because everyone else is buying them up to sell their memory kits with the SAME ICs. Tony was trying to keep the ICs used from getting out for a bit to keep the competition from following suit on their Research and Devel. work.

As soon as a new memory kit gets announced everyone wants to know the ICs that are being used. I don't blame OCZ for wanting to keep it under wraps - unfortunately now that means they are losing customers due to availability. If you guys can hold out for the OCZ kits - do it, they are rock solid and really built for people like us.

Unfortunately, I have to have something in my hands by the 23rd of November. I understand your point but if other memory vendors can provide stock then I don't see how we can give OCZ a pass. My first preference would be OCZ but since I can't buy them I have to go to the competition. Thing is, OCZ seems to have plenty of these on hand for RMA purposes (from the sense I'm getting with people being able to get quick RMAs for their sticks) which makes me question why those aren't in the channel?
