I was just nitpicking. In the strictest sense, it's still client/server. They are just choosing to utilize it in a way that eliminates most of the good parts of a client/server layout.

The GRiD online isn't half bad and isn't really matchmaking even though the rooms are setup by players.

I think I heard them use the term "matchmaking" which leads me to believe it will be very much like the matchmaking used in Call of Duty: WaW and many other Xbox 360 games.

With matchmaking system used on the Xbox 360 I have found that I spend more time waiting for it to setup a game than I do playing the terribly laggy mess. If the host of the game decides to leave prepare to wait several minutes for it to pick a new one and get ready for an even laggier game as the system picks the player with the best connection to be the original host.(whoever pays most for their Internet finishes the game with the best score)

In the Xbox 360 version of matchmaking the player isn't given an option as to which map he/(rarely)she would like to play. The only options are the game mode and whether or not you want to play hardcore mode. If you do chose hardcore mode the number of game modes available is much more limited.

Once the games finish the participants are sent back into the crappy lobby to wait another 5-10 minutes for new players to be selected to play with.

For me the worst part about the whole thing for me is never playing with the same group of people again. When I played BF2 all 156 hours that I played on Road to Jalalabad were spread between 2 servers.:)

Correct, it's like match making like found in one of the online games from Halo. Where you are warped to someone's host. When matchmaking is involved there will be no list of lobbies to choose from. From what I know. But again, it depends on how IW.net is setup.

Exactly. Dedicated servers cultivate a sense of community. You can go back to a server because it has low ping or options that you like - but eventually a community of regulars forms on a server or group of servers and a tight nit community forms. I have never gotten that from L4D (for example).

Here is my understanding of how matchmaking would work (again, we have to wait to see how IW.Net does it).

You go online and you are greeted with something like this. As you can see there are no server listings, no options to choose from just a quick and easy way to get a online game started. However in Grid there are at least 3 options to choose from:
-Quick Match
-Custom Match (which allows you to choose the lobby you wish to join)
-Create a Session (which is obvious)
Once you click on quick match you are greeted with this. Match making is going to find a session for you. And you enter a server that may or may not look like this. You may get into a full server and you may not.

Quick match must exist at least since last millennium, why not suggest that option to the "majority" of PC gamers?

Yeah, how hard would it be to implement some kind of matchmaking system that works with dedicated servers? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. That makes me think, as others have mentioned, that the primary goal is to control content. If they already have plans for paid DLC content then I doubt very much that any petition/protest/boycott will work - they have already done the cost/benefit analysis and determined that they will make more on extra content then they will lose from lost sales.

That is so sad but it's so true. They could careless, someone posted yesterday that IWNet paid alot of money and I just don't see IW changing there minds in 3 weeks before the release of MW2, it will not HAPPEN.

They doesnt invest anything at all. Just port console crap to PC and thats it.

couldnt believe it but it actually is a direct console port to the PC, so much so that a 6600GT released in 2004 will be able to play the game.

What's wrong with DX9? COD4 still looks great on DX9 and I guess they still use the same engine, maybe doing some tweaks to make it looks a bit better just like GOW vs GOW 2. Imagine if it supports DX11. :D

Unless they tweak it to the the bone, I don't see it happening, as it's Q3 engine tweaked a lot already... so they would probably need a complete engine overhaul to get DX11 on there... and as they are focusing on consoles, it's most likely not going to happen anytime soon :down:
