It was released at $549, as far as ATi told the public. They then told E-Tailers that no one could charge less than $599 until told otherwise for ANY retail card....
Even the 256mb x1800xt is set at $599 at ZZF.

Well it was 550 but they silently elevated that to an even 600. But NVIDIA knows they're charging a lot, which is why they aren't expecting a lot of people buying these cards. I think they're underestimating the market though, because truth is people will pay just about anything for top of the line performance. Because of that, on the flagship cards they can charge just about whatever they want. The idea is performance over anything.Quote:

Even the transistor count of GPUs has surpassed CPUs (unless you count dual core). Graphics cards are just as difficult, if not more so than CPUs to create.
The only difference that keeps graphics cards from the price level of CPUs is importance. Fact is, you can run a computer without a discreet graphics card. You can't run a computer without a CPU. Graphics cards are still a commodity item. Even 3D acceleration, while standard now, isn't essential. This difference in importance keeps a balance with the raw performance and complexity of graphics cards to keep prices high, but still nowhere near that of a top-end CPU.
Very well said Cybercat...
Unfortunately, it won't be long until GPU's reach top-end cpu prices....
I think Windows Vista will have a helping hand it that, making discreet cards the closest thing to essential they've ever been.Quote:

Prices for top end gpu's has really gone insane lately - especially when 12 months later you pay half the price for the same, or better performance. you could get 2 7800gtx in sli for the same price as you paid for your 6800 ultra 512mb. The mid range isn't so bad - 6800gs looks a bargain, at least compared to modern prices, but they come at a cost that two years ago would have been high end. CPU's have always been overpriced, moreso now that performance wise the gap between a £100 and a £600 chip is so small. At least with graphics there is a performance difference that can partly justify costs, but really both gpu's and cpu's should either cost less, or last longer. Why buy a 7800gtx 512mb now, when by the time the 90nm version is out the 110nm version will be a fraction of its price, and the 256mb versions will be absolute bargains. And these are the reccomended prices - what if an add in board partner wants to release an x1800xt with 1.1ns ram and a souped up cooler - how much extra could they 'justify' charging the consumer?
well considerin i wanna stepup from my GTX, MSRP is all that really matters to me.
Oh well if they charge $650 MSRP for the 512 GTX i guess ill just hold off on steping up
come Q1/Q2 next year when G80 comes out, i should have a job so I'll try to sell my GTX off on ebay/forums
there should still be SOME resale value (i hope :/)

XS has always been super fast for me aswell, but the last couple of days its been really slow, sometimes it won't even make it to the forum index.

Same here kOnsl, but what revv is talking about is in terms of how long it takes for a reply to just about anything.
If you post in the AMD section here, you have a reply within 10 minutes almost consistantly.
This site has been having issues lately though, sometimes it doesn't even load, and takes 5 - 10 refreshes to work properly.
Check out the techreport for a nasty story on ATi from back in the x800XL leak out days. They raise the price until they can get enough. They play the supply/price game as well. ATi gouges along with the vendors. You say hey wait for our card it's only going to be $300. Then you charge your vendors $340. Hey... $300 was just suggested retail! You don't need to make money right? :p:
Anyways, there was never much hope from me that they'd be $549.
2X512 GTX at COD2 1600X1200 4XAA 16XANIS, supersampling everything maxed:

OMG........that is sick
50fps? Thats a crap framerate, for £1000 worth of cards, im sorty, but that engine is just plain :banana::banana::banana:.
MSRP on the 512MB GTX is 699.00. Based on what cost is I would not be suprised to see some of the larger E-tailers give the card away at 650.00. (At 650.00 there is not much margin after shipping, credit card processing and overhead.) The biggest issue will be supply. I was told that the cards will be low volume so only time will tell of how many we will see. (When Newegg had them posted they were at 699.00 so at least initially they are selling MSRP.)
799.00 <----vendor trying to make a few extra dollars by selling early.
Its so sick, what will next card be at ?
That is just nuts, where is it gonna stop?Quote:

Based on previous experience, I guess, some extra $50-$100 of MSRP for each new refresh of the existing generation/new generation top-end card. So at the end of next year $1000 will probably be reached, just as some members here have already suggested.Quote:

I am glad that initial spec sheet from eVGA was a pre-release spec. Looks like the nVidia spec is 550/1700. Very nice indeed.
Can't wait for my BFG to show up!
so which brands u guys think .. ive always been a bfg guy .. but people keep telling me they suck .. and xfx is a better brand

2x7800GT is $620 isnt that faster ?
I dont like this at all, this card might ruin the whole future.
when people actually bought 512mb 6800 ultras at $1000 card vendors realised that high end obviously wasnt refering to what people were willing to pay. And with those cards I can only assume people bought them in pairs for sli, as otherwise two 6800 ultra 256's in sli would have been better performing and better value. As long as there are people who are willing to pay, they are going to be people willing to take their money. Just wait and see how the dual 7800gt(x) cards sell.
Yes they are.Quote:

The bought them because were under the impression that more video card memory = faster. I am sure everyone here knows that a 6800 128MB card smokes a 6600 256MB card every time. Still does not prevent people from buying.Quote:
