Ok basically I did just a quick finger-check on PCH heatsink and it seems pretty hot (unpleasant after few seconds) - that means it works but the chip is far from being cool. With my Voltages same to your Radier (except CPU) that leaves me bit worried. Today I'll check with temp sensor from my fan controller to measure the real temperature. But I've found also that my Accelero S1 on Radeon blocks a way for bigger "straight" heatsink, so in the end maybe I'll welcome back my old friend HR-05 SLI - if it would fit somehow ;) But first I'll check temps.

Radier - could you tell what was your readings from pyrometer?

BTW: Just in case of soe possible comments - my case has pretty good airflow (P180 with all fan holders populated but running in silent mode - up to 900-1000 revs except of CPU fans (4 pin exhaust and 3 pin on TRUE) an auto level 3 / 60 degrees).

Because of shape of Power Phase radiators it is difficult to measure their temps.Temp at bottom of radiators was 54C. Top surface was about 42C. It means heat dissipation is good. Ambient temp was 21C.

You can easily frankenstein an old BX chipset heatsink on it and slap on a 30mm fan :) I even have an ic7 max 3 heatsink sitting around...

Yeah there are holes. I'm very particular though the HS has to look pretty and not franken-modded on :p: I guess you could try contacting Asrock though and just say you think the PCH heatsink on the Extreme4 is rubbish and could you buy a Pro3 heatsink from them. Just check this pic out. Take the dumb faceplate off the PCH heatsink and shock horror its a proper heatsink!

^^^I've resisted the urge to rip apart the cooling sinks thus far but I follow with interest!

As a new E4 member with at 2500k (care of Costa Rica...:ROTF:) has anyone experienced any sound glitches?

I have both the THX and Realtek HD running but in WMC (and games) I get occasional annoying 'pulses' over the sound. It concerns me. I want to play with the CPU but this needs attention first.

Maybe its Memory related (Ripjaws 12800s set at 1600 2T@1.5v)? Maybe I should stick some head phones on and rule out the speaker system itself (very old Atlec As 995).

Kinda sad to see the old c2q (qx6850) go, but the few benches I've run (maxon) are showing 10-15% gains with Gfx at stock (vs OC) and 100% on CPU).

Also kinda strange - haven't touched anything but the CPU turbo ups to 3.4- 3.6? WTF?? (x34 -x36). Was expecting just x33. Its all so new to me. :shrug:



UPDATE:- After checking about everything did a fresh OS install problem solved!

Up and running at 4.6 (1.334 in bios 60-65 in Linpack /Intel burn test) 24/7 clock

i find pretty annoying the fact that you CANT use the power saving features, which reduce vcore when idling (16x multi) if you set vcore on "fixed mode" (at least on my asrock).Unless you set it on offset mode, you get a straight fixed VID for all multies.. The problem rely in using different VID for different workloads (1c, 2c, etc) and in my case for example, for 4200 1c load requests 1.2710 VID, but 4c/8t requires 1.3461 (at least that is reported in coretemp/realtemp367). If i set for example offset -0.100 LLC3 in uefi i might be stable in heavy workload utilizing 4 cores..(1.199 vcore needed for prime 26.5 ALL threads/core stability) but if have a high single thread load (e.g. spi,prime95-1thread ), the 1.2710-0.1 => 1.1710.. with LLC3 becomes, 1.13-1.15... => "kaboom"... the classic x124 BSOD in very short time.. .I don't know if this can be addressed via a uefi update, or have to trade off , with a bit higher vcore in 4c/8t workloads to compensate for the lower vid in low core/thread-count loads. For the time being, i set it to have a bit higher load vcore (1.208) with different LLC lvl(5) and offset setting, that gives 1.176 vcore in 1core load, which seems stable so far (pain in the ass of course to validate this setting for all 4 cores...). I think the most "simple" solution could be if asrock, for example,(and i suspect all manufacturer's implementation suffers from this offset behavior + fixed vcore not lowering in idle state) could add code that uses fixed vcore in all workloads , and using "request VID" only in idle state, to benefit from stable vcore when overclocked+load and cool and quiet operation when cpu idles.
p.s.> of course someone will point out that "why not using higher vcore? adjusting the offset to meet the minimum required for 1c loads, eventhough you get higher in 4c/8t?" . In my case that means i may use 1.24-1.25 vcore in 8t loads.. which i just find it waste of watts, especially when the cpu has a 100% load.

p.s.> assuming the fact the the MHz/requestVID slope actually lowers as MHZ increases, the real needed Vcore, may come close to request VID, and posse no problem to use offset mode, but that may be effective in >46x-47x settings, and doesn't apply to mild/conservative overclocks that want to retain cool&quiet operation when idling :(

For multipliers I guess it is Turbo mode working :)
For sound card I've seen pretty bad results for embedded one in some review - I would suggest adding some discrete one.

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but anyways, here goes. Is anyone using the ASRock Instant boot utility? I installed it just out of curiousity, and found it to be useless. Not sure if I am missing anything or not. I followed the instructions on the website:

Installation Procedure

1.Execute the Instant Boot installation program under Windows.
2.After the installation is completed, you should find an Instant Boot icon on the Windows desktop.
3.Double click the Instant Boot icon on the desktop, then Instant Boot main menu will pop up.
4.On Instant Boot main menu, you can choose "Fast Mode", Regular Mode" or "Disable Instant Boot". After that, please click "Apply".
5.When you want to shut down the computer, please simply select "Shut Down" from Windows "Start menu".

The problem is, when I select shutdown, the computer does more of a restart, and boots back into windows, then, after a couple seconds, goes into like a "sleep" mode. When I hit the power button, it wakes up. If I select shutdown again, it will do the same thing, reboot, and then sleep. Is this how it is supposed to work? If it is, sleep mode is way better at handling this. I am using windows 7 sp1 X64, if that makes a difference. I just thought this could be a workaround with the sleep mode problem a lot of us are having with waking to a black screen when using a higher multi than 48. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah Instant Boot works for me the same way. Very odd.
Also I have the same issue with sleep mode.

ASUS P67 mobos has got the same issue. Perhaps it's related to chipset itself or CPU. Duno :/

For all with problem with resume after sleep/hibernate and Internal PLL Voltage Enabled.

Yeah, I know this´s the a Asrock thread, but this seems to concern all P67 chipset board no matter which brand, it seems like a lot of people have problem to resume after sleep/hibernate with Internal PLL Voltage Enabled.

So I quess we have to wait for Intel to solve this.

Ket, do you know if Asrock is working on it with Intel also or if it´s only the big ones who does?

I tried it and unfortunately it adds an offset in all VIDs with max multi, thus the difference between the voltage for 1c load and 4c/8t load still exists.
The good (not relevant with Additional turbo voltage) is that the cpu due to thermal envelope(??) is stable in 1c loads with less vcore than 4c/8t so i might find a good trade-off with minimal overvolting in the latter setting.

I'm using this Extreme 4 board and everytime I boot up, it turns on, turns off then on again. This is very annoying and does this apply to all P67 boards or only Asrock?
The other question is, I am able to run Prime95 stable for more than an hour but the moment I shutdown Windows, it freezes. WTF?! I thought it passes the stability test but it's failing to even shut down Windows. Anyone has the same problem and what's the solution?

Update your UEFI. Try Linx with AVX for stability.

I'm on V1.6 so that's the latest unless they released something recently? I've used LinX as well, it passes after an hour plus and it's not stable sometimes too. What's AVX?

Hello from a newbie to the forum.
I got some very strange bug. UEFI is not fullscren on my XL2370.
Tried 1.60C, now with 1.61.

I have contacted ASRock and they told me it is either monitor or GPU.
But both of them worked flawlessly with my previous 775 setup.

PCH chipset heat;

We all know the PCH heatsink is naff. To make it as effective as possible lap the base of the PCH heatsink, replace the TIM with something decent (like MX3 or AS Ceramique) and replace the pushpins with a few screws, washers and nuts. Doing those basic things should take the PCH heat down from "hot" to "warm".


Asrock instant boot:

Thats how its supposed to work mean6. Essentially it puts the system in a advanced sleep state, yes, its pretty useless.


on-off boot bug:

aoch88, go to the first page download and update to UEFI 1.6A (newer than vanilla 1.6) or newer. That will fix your problem. Alternatively just turning spread spectrum back on should stop the on-off boot bug.

papatsonis; try using offset mode with LLC level 2.
lavazza; That looks like a issue with your montor. Use the buttons on your monitor to adjust screen width and height.
bat4; The v0.96 driver and v1.0.0.0098 driver still causes a BSOD with the logitech Quickcam Pro 4000. Workaround: use a USB 2.0 port.
Ghostleader; Asrock are a part of Asus, so yes, once a fix is known no doubt Asrock will add it too.
Sync0r; Yes. The bottom slot is limited to 4x though I think.

both options are as good as one another, but as I prefer my CPU to run full speed 24/7 (I run BOINC) I prefer the "set it and forget it" approach with the fixed voltage option. Rmember to set LLC to level 2 or 3 for a minimum of vdrop ;)
