6950 to 6970 flash thread

my 6950 flashed fine to 6970 bios and runs 24/7 at 1000core 1500mem at 1.3v..maybe more in the core clock but havent tried over 1000 yet just enjoying it :) before i could bench 950core at stock volts however wouldnt last in black ops for more then 15-20 mins.
i might give 1050 a go and see if i can push out a vantage or something

EDIT: didnt quite reach 1050mhz core but did manage 1035mhz core and 1525mem on 1.3 volt air cooled(silently) pulled 6331 on 3dmark11 not to shabby for $235
and im sure 1050+ on a little bit more voltage but idk if i wanna go through that or not yet..maybe at a later date. Ran 1040-1045core through 3 of the gpu tests before crashing so i think 1.325v would do.

When the 50 is flashed to a 70, does the voltage remain at 50 default?
Is there a difference between them in power circuits?

1- No, voltages will use 70 defaults.

Actually that depends for 1.

If its the 6970 bios then yes voltages will be changed (1.175V)
If its the 6950 bios that was modified for the shaders then it uses the 6950 voltage (1.1V)

Plus what ever other voltage changes are done (with ram) between the 2 cards.

can msi twin frozr 2 be flashed with twin frozr 2 6970, anyone try? thanks.

I got a Sapphire 6950 1gb the other day for only €192 xd, in 3dmark11 I got P5014 3DMarks at stock.

I then used RBE to unlock the shaders, flashed the card with Winflash. All the shaders unlocked properly after reboot.
I used Trixx to up the core clock to 880, I haven't touched the memory yet as I don't know what the exact memory this card uses, is it the same as the sapphire 6970,
how high is it rated to go? From experience I know the vram can be the weakest link on a graphics card so little cautious there till I know more.

Running 3dmark11 again the temp maxed out at 71c with 56% fan use on auto with a 9%+ increase in performance:

I'm guessing flashing a sapp 6970 bios here would be a no no :)
Anyone know how far the sapp 6950 1gb memory can go or how can I test that reliably?

I thought 1GB cards were not flashable?

I don't know about 1Gig cards but 2Gig seems around 1375-1450 for the memory typically. Upping the core voltage seems to give it a little more breathing room but not much more from personal experience.

not with 2GB bioses they aren't, but at TPU they figured out how to edit the shader count in a bios file, and this has made 1GB models flashable too.

I used RBE to edit the bios that came with the card and reflash that edited bios back to unlock the shaders.

I guess I'll mess with this later, was planning on oc the core first, see how high I can get that before heat/artefacting becomes an issue.
Then try memory, I'm guessing the only real way to check if your oc is stable is just game and see if it crashes or you get artefacts?

Upping the core voltage shouldn't have any effect on memory, if you could change the vram voltage and timings that would work, I know that's in the bios but dunno if there is a tool that can change it.


Edit: I need some tools but was thinking I might take off the cooler next week and check what actual memory chips it uses.

Hey guys, i just successfully unlocked my sapphire 6950 to 6970. I also downloaded TRiXX 3.0.6 but it wont let me adjust the GPU voltage. It says "1175" and I cant increase or decrease it. How do i enable it so I can adjust the voltage? I dont want to damage my 6950. Thanks

If u flashed ur 6950 with a 6970 bios then it will have the 1.175v which is what the 6970 has and that volt is totally fine, it seems u can oc it quite a bit on that volt too.
I was sure trixx changed the voltages too but apparently not, I know people use RBE to change the voltage in bios but I haven't done that myself yet.

So i guess there is no way to change the voltage in TriXX? I prefer just to use TriXX as opposed to RBE to keep things simple.

Whenever I put the voltage of my 6950 over 1,16V i get graphic glitches especially with apps that use tesselation like heaven, metro 2033 etc.
Under this everything is fine:confused:
If I push the voltage higher the graphic errors get more and more. This happens even at stock clocks.
Temps are not the problem because the errors are from the first second on even at 100% fan speed. Doesn´t make any sense to me.

And second, did anyone used "unlock" feature in RBE succesfully on non reference cards ?
Ive seen gigabyte here NR but i dont know if it was achieved via bios mod or bios switch from 6970.
Im kinda hesistant to be the first cause i dont have any warranty for my card :-/

Ok, seems i did it.

MSI Twinfrozr II(2) 2GB 6950 Unlock.
1.Ive dumped original bios via gpuz
2.Using RBE 1.28 i unlocked shaders to the bios.
3.Tried windows unlock script ,PC HANGED, so i dont recommend.
4.Tried manually atiwinflash, failed programming.
5.Eventually got to the best solution, so used atiflash in dos.
6.Seems like it worked, card seems a little hotter now.

Very happy to see the the twin frozr II can Unlock. I've read everywhere it can't.

Is there a difference in the frozr II vs III in terms of bios and flashing? I think the III has a slightly better heatsink.


@ everyone

For those of you who've been running flashed 6950s in crossfire, how do you guys like the experience (drivers experience primarily)? I've always heard a lot about how ATIs drivers are garbage and I haven't touch ATI since my old x1900xtx. If they seem to have fixed a lot of issues, I'd gladly jump back.

I'm still not convinced it works on the Frozrs tbh.
Having a dilemma here atm as well. My 4870x2 died recently so I'm looking at some proper replacement. When looking at the benches with the recent flagships (6990 and GTX 590) I see that a CF setup of 2 6950s gives almost as much performance as these 2 recent cards but at lower cost. Allthough 2 6950's will already provide more than enough performance I'm also looking at unlocking the cards to a 6970.

Currently I have 2 options in mind.

1.) Get two regular MSI 6950s. These are probably reference cards so the chance to unlock is high. Bad thing about these cards is that the cooler is noisy so I would need to replace the original cooler with a 3rd party cooler. I can buy these cards here for just over €200 each and a good 3rd party cooler for about €40 each. If they unlock properly to a 6970 the decent cooler will not only be quieter but could mean the 6970 settings are easier to hold.

2.) Get two MSI FrozrII 6950s. These cards have a low chance to be unlocked to 6970 but already have decent cooling so no need for 3rd party coolers. There is a chance these cards will overclock a little better. These cards are about €235 so the total cost will be pretty much the same as a regular 6950 with 3rd party cooling. If they would unlock it will save me some work.

Any wise words on this from you guys?

Get TwinfrozrIII`s, theyre easily unlockable because they have the bios switch, so its easy and safe.And the cooler itself is a little better than on the II.Checkout TPU for review.
As for the twinfrozr II, it became possible because guys from RBE made it possible to mod existing bios, so no need to use 6970 bioses.Voltages etc stay stock.Reference bioses expectedly didnt work with twinfrozr II edition as it has custom pcb.
However if i were you i would get reference models and put best possible AC on both of them.Ac xtreme or shaman.These cards get HOT after unlocking/overclocking.
