Over and over again I see unsecured wifi with default router passwords (I use my smartphone and snoop around when I'm waiting for Wifey etc). My ISP ships modem/routers pre-configured with pretty good security settings but some people think they're making their lives easier and turn everything off, or buy a replacement unit and never configure it past the user name and password for their internet connection. Seriously, many bytch slappings are warranted.

Well running kismet for 30 minutes show several ALERTS in the neighborhood. From what I can tell one is probing networks but never joining. Another disassociating from a network and then sending data. Repeatedly. Sounds like an attack. Trying to deauth then grab traffic to run aircrack on??

Nice thing about Kismet it is an IDS and the log files can be used by other IDS programs to dig deeper into what is going on.

The Pi is on it's own. On battery, no ethernet. 1 wifi ad-hoc logged in from laptop and other wifi in monitor mode running Kismet. :up:

The Pi is also plenty capable for this task. It does not stress the CPU or memory, never uses swap file. Less than 4% CPU.

There is an unprotected network HP printer in my neighborhood that I have, so far, resisted the temptation to send a print job. A nice picture with a few comments. :D

I am interested to see if there is any interest in this project, similar projects or maybe a thread on network security. Comments?

sensationalist news scares people from running open wifi to create more money for capitalist business's, i really see very little wrong with open wifi.

again, i have nothing to hide, the people who you need to worry about will get into your wifi even if its "secure"

i usually have open guest account, as i have way more bandwidth than i can use and guest account doesn't share inter network data so they cant see my share files (or print stuff on my printer lol, i do agree that that person is an idiot lol, id print funny stuff on it)

and when you have open wifi, you cant be prosecuted for what someone does on it you are protected by the same laws that protect the internet companies from getting in trouble when you do something with the internet that they provide you with.

One person connects to your open network and downloads child :banana::banana::banana::banana: from a monitored site and you're looking at jail time. You are not universally protected in the same way an ISP might be, and for that matter ISPs are not universally protected in all jurisdictions either. Private citizens are liable for what goes through their network. In some areas you can be charged specifically for not securing your network.
The "nothing to hide" argument isn't that clever, either. Running open wifi is tantamount to posting your bank account, credit card details, all other personal details and anything else you use online on your front fence. Anyone with half an ounce of know-how can grab them. WPA and WPA2 are sufficiently effective to prevent causal intrusion, though WEP is trivial. The "REAL" clever guys, the ones that break into government departments, aren't interested in you as an individual. You are someone that might get picked up by bots and scanning scripts. "Script kiddies", neighbors and casual wardrivers on the other hand are the more likely people to try and access your network, and unless it has at least basic security enabled they will do so with ease.

Sure if they do not find child :banana::banana::banana::banana: on your PC or any media in your house you might be cleared without a trial. BUT you still get a visit as it was your IP# that was used. Ever have the cops raid your home?

There was another in Florida I think where the feds yelled at the man whom they had gotten out of bed in the very early hours and made him lie on the floor while they searched him and his wife. He was called several names by the agents who assumed his guilt. All Based off his IP# showing up downloading child :banana::banana::banana::banana:. THEN they figured out he had open wifi and they discovered a boat in the marina not far away with a pringles can wifi antenna. And the man had no child :banana::banana::banana::banana: on his PC. The man went though a terrifying and humiliating experience because he didn't lock his wifi.

So if you are ok with having to clear yourself with feds who jump first and ask questions later by all means share. There is also p2p networks and letters from greedy music and movie lawyers.

While these stories were from main stream media that is not where I get the majority of my info.

While I agree the media blows things out of proportion and businesses use scare tactics to sell goods and services there really are people out there doing bad things. If you want to help them out be my guest. And if you think it takes a lot of knowledge and skill just go to youtube and do a few searches. hack windows, hack wifi, crack passwords, hack networks, etc. They make it so simple almost anyone could do it.

Here is the entire setup in a 24oz soda cup. A 32oz would be better for being able to use a omni antenna sticking out the cap as a straw would. Cables took up a lot of room but also provided some padding to keep it all from rattling around.

Hey guys! Thought I would take my first dive into linux. Running Mint 16 Cinnamon, I've connected to my wifi network but can't install BOINC I think its running it from USB? I'm a big noob though any help would be appreciated.

Did you install Linux to a USB memory stick? Or is your WiFi USB? What did you do to try and install BOINC? Package manager or command line?

I'm an idiot the installer was on USB but looks like a regular OS haha. Installing it to my HDD now :) How much of a percentage yield in linux going to be over win7 for example?

This is the best, simplest way to install BOINC Manager on that I have found from experience and using DA's notes from Post #130 of the thread How To: Ubuntu cruncher! Install and forget:
Go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
Download the appropriate Linux version, Linux x64 for 64 bit machines. I usually download the last stable version before the beta, which would be 7.2.33 in this case.
Move the BOINC download from Download folder to the Home folder. Right click on the boinc download icon and click on permissions tab. Click on the box next to Allow executing file as program(this allows the icon to act as an installer(Yes, Poppa, you can do command line chmod but that hasn't always worked for me).
Click on the BOINC icon to install file. Then click on the BOINC folder to get into it.

From inside the BOINC folder now follow DA's instructions(Each line is a separate command:
Open a terminal(control T or click on the black and white icon at the bottom). Make sure you are in CD:\BOINC
sudo su(Allows you to seize root, requires you to enter the login password)
apt-get update(This make take a while with a lot of lines)
apt-get install boinc(This may also take a while)
/etc/init.d/boinc-client stop
cp boinc boinccmd boincmgr /usr/bin/
/etc/init.d/boinc-client start
exit

If memory serves me, I usually restart/reboot at this point and then once I'm in again, I click on Menu and scroll down to BOINC Manager, whcih will bring up the BOINC Manager window. You don't have to have the BOINC window open, as it should already be working. You can check that by opening a terminal and entering top. You'll see X number of BOINC jobs along with all the other programs that are running.

I'm stuck here

EDIT: I got BOINC running but I don't think as a service. How would I go about getting results to upload immediately like the cc_config file in windows?

That command will only work if you installed BOINC from the repository. If you installed it in your Home directory using the Berkley script it does nothing. Instead, stop the client using the manager, extract the updated client into another directory and then copy the new boinc, boincmd and boincmgr files over the top of the old ones. Double clicking the "run_client" script should get it running again.

Here is my :2cents:

Open a terminal, CTRL ALT t

Copy the code in the box below and paste into the terminal

should install both client and manager. if it says "Already Installed" then:

If it says "stopped"

If it says anything other than "started" or "running"

Once you get it installed and running you can worry about upgrading it and the settings in cc_config.xml

What version of linux is everyone else running?

Use gedit or Leafpad or whatever text editor and go to

/var/lib/boinc-client/cc_config.xml

add below. if </options> is already in it then just the one line in between the options lines.

<options>
<report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>
</options>


Most people are running Mint, Ubuntu or another derivative of Debian with a few Arch installs. Arch is not a Debian distro

I have been very tempted to reformat one of the ubuntu servers and install FreeBSD and Linux compat libs and boinc. Just because. :D

I ran it awhile and it did fine but the boinc port was not being kept up to date. It has been for awhile now.

OldChap is probably the best one to answer that, at least more so than me. But it really depends on the project. I THINK IIRC FAAH Vina was the one that had best improvement. MM had a thread when he put Linux on a cruncher that had run Windows for a long enough period to do a good comparison.

Yep, to get maximum points you will need to run Vina projects only.... and just now there are not any.... well, not Vina only anyway.

The best you can do is run the fight aids project where FAHV is Vina and faah is not

Someone posted a faah removal method if you search around here (No time to do it, sorry)

This isn't that bad setting up just got it running on a 3770k. Can't wait to load this onto the SR-2.

Got Linux running in everything I wanted too. Just got in a lot of 8GB USB drives, now time to go with disk less installs already got one done :D Granted energy savings will be minor but I'll get to use all my SSD's again for better things
