Got another 970 and a 920 d0 on the way for playing.
The 970 that's on the way has been run up to 4.8ghz on 1.488v! :D :D :D

Nice CPU. I wish it fulfills the expectations.
30 Gigs! You could always buy something like M4E and 2600K to play around while waiting for something better, like I did. With those 30 gigs you will most probably find few of great sticks, as only great ones work with SB. But when they work - they kick a$$.
Nah not interested in SB and I've gone off tweaking things and overclocking myself, but still like reading about what other people have done.
Got my new 970 in. It does 4.2 at 1.35v instead of 1.375v for my old one. Woohoo. It also seems to be MUCH cooler... ~73C fully linx loaded instead of ~85! NICE.
Edit:
Oh hello! 4.5ghz HT on with less voltage than i needed on my old chip with HT off.

Working on the LinX result now.
a sec. rig will immensely suck you into a few $$$ more.
why so many sticks of Hypers, and whats the deal with Hypers...?
i have this ram i hate, 6GB OCZ Platinum 2000Mhz LV6GK 9-9-9-30, which i think is the *EOL*
they boot at almost any freq...2400mhz/2200mhz/2000mhz/1800mhz.
my problem is that they need atleast 1.72v, they either need only 1.29v qpi or more then 1.45v qpi, this is all done @ 4.2Ghz
with the i7 970 they barely made it to 20K/19K/21K in AIDA with C-States ON.
Same OCZ Ram with a nice i7 950 gave me 22K reads in AIDA C-States Off.
so i learned something, maybe im wrong....
the speed @ which the memory can transfer is sorely related to IMC ability to scale with OverClock.
is it the IMC what makes a golden cpu a golden cpu.??
I've had a second PC (sig) for years now (specs often changing but still). Its now always being used by my gf for her thesis so it stays at a very low OC with fans very low so she isn't worried about it crashing and is as quiet as possible. I have had a REX X48 prepped for sub zero, my LN2 pot and a couple of nice s775 CPU's that I used for benching awhile ago, but just don't want to do it anymore.
Why do I have 30 gigs of Hypers? I used to really like memory overclocking. I used to bench a lot of DDR2 Micron D9 GMH/GKX back in the day, ambient and on DICE, and Hypers were (and still are) the best for 1366 low latency high freq so naturally I ended up with a few kits when I changed platforms. Just not interested in it now but I still have my collection. Good for backup should anything happen to the kit in the PC anyway.
Andreezy,
I think it is much harder to get a good IMC. I think it's also important to get a good core. I think my old 970 had a better imc than my new 970, but the new 970 has a much better and cooler running core.
Guys, do Rampage extreme III water blocks fit the black edition ?
I've held the black edition and the extreme 3 in my hand yesterday and I just can't get the black edition out of my head!
So so so so sexy !
i wish i could afford to invest in more memory, donmarkoni has a nice set of 7-7-7-20/2000mhz which seems out of this world.....how lucky did he get to find that kit......
i wish i new more about my memory..
i know the set of patriot 12gb 9-11-9/27 is Hynix, but the other 2 im lost in the waters.
they are 6gb oczp2000lv6gk and the other is patriot viper 2 1600mhz 8-8-8/24.
i think i have a real good i7 950, i say it cause it can sustain a 4.4Ghz OC with 2000mhz/2200mhz ram with very low/heat volt.
i'd have liked a good 6 core cpu, that could do 4.4 and i'd hold off from this sandyroad platform untill the waters are clear..
seems like the 4 core i7 is trying to stick around....
zoson how you figure the IMC was better in your old cpu?
 jaja 200usd per 2gb module........maybe this is the reason +why+ i have not beeing introduced to hypers, i thought you guys meant kingston hypers.......
corsair could keep them away from my pockets at that price.

Sticks with Hyper IC's (MNH-E and MGH-E) are EOL and no longer produced. I purchased mine both new and used. Nothing else will do DDR3-1700+ 6-6-6-18 or DDR3-2000+ 7-7-7-20, all the new ram is crappy timings and crappy IC's and SB seems to love it. My kits will do DDR3-2000 7-7-7-20 at ~1.65 - 1.70v so it's not really special, some are better than others though, and your IMC must be good to handle them.
new chip can't do 2166mhz memory. it does do 2133 stable, though.
New CPU does 4.4 22x200bclk with 1.49v set in bios ~1.48v real. Doesn't go above 84C either. MUCH cooler than my old cpu.
The IMC of the new chip is not as good as the old one.
Old CPU @ 2000 Mem = 7-9-7-24-4-88-10-6-24-0-1T
New CPU @ 2000 Mem = 7-9-7-27-6-88-12-8-28-0-1T
So much testing this weekend. :O
I also got a 920 D0 that supposedly does 4.2 @ 1.27v, so I've got to test that bugger also.
Cryptic, i dont know if these are hypers, but i dislike them a lot, its like the 1st and 2nd timing tables are programmable as they give me a wide range.
i doubt they are hypers cause they are advertised as 9-9-9-30 @2000mhz.
the fuggers do like to boot at almost any freq if i give it the QPIv it wants.
zoson you had some very good outputs in AIDA before, it makes sense now how you test the IMC.
good luck on the i7 920, i have a 950 that uses somewhat the same voltage ~1.28v for 4.2Ghz and it seems to run cool and have a strong IMC.
Massive amounts of testing last night:
new i7 970 @ 4.4GHz 24/7 OC:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...em-84gflop.jpg
i7 920 D0 @ 4.2 2ghz mem AIDA:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...42-20-aida.jpg
The above SS is using the same timings as the new i7 970 and are untuned, so it might be possible to get even more bandwidth. This i7 920 d0 is a MONSTER. 4.2GHz at 1.28125v Core 200BCLK 2ghz Mem with 1.3375v QPI. It runs kind of hot though. 84C max temp. 4GHz Uncore, also.
Edit: woops, posted the wrong 920 image.
Are there any issues with BIOS 1301? I know in the past some people had issues with some of the newer releases, CPU temp display problems is one that I recall seeing.
I am on BIOS 901 and have not updated since I built my system. Everything is running fine, but I have started thinking about updating my BIOS and
Intel RST drivers from 1.0.0.1046 to 10.5.0.1027 or 10.5.1.1001
and my Crucial C300 from v2 to v7 firmware.
I prefer 0003 over 1301. They both work fine though and don't have the temp bug.
0003 gives you additional options that are not available in 1301. 1301 has the memory recheck feature to try and make tRL obsolete, but does not do the trick every time.
0003 is not modified, it's Asus made, but it was alternate path of BIOS'es if may call it so.
I don't remember any place with all of the BIOS'es, but I have a collection you can DL from. Of course, I take no responsibility for anything. ;-)
