I agree. I just mentioned that his clocks were similar to mine for the same voltage. That is also exactly why I mentioned 2.2v being the absolute max IMO and that even the stock Vmem is "overvolted". The Switching Frequency mod did not do much for me...seemed to actually hurt clocks a bit, but I'm still experimenting. However, I do think that it is worth a shot as it has helped for others.

I am definately not suggesting upping the Vmem. I did and am willing to take the risk and have taken the appropriate precautions :)

Hi - Noob to video card O/C but done a lot of cpu O/C for years. Ive read this thread, couple of noob questions - SORRY.

I have a XFX 7900 GT 520/1500 - I Have replaced the stock cooler with a zalman vf9000cu.

Conductive paint mod is what I intend.
Will this handle the 1.55V mod - 24/7??

Also the ground point that shows in the pic - on my card is a white dot - do I need to scratch the white dot off or something?? (Yeh i know use a multi meter - bloody kids have my multi meter - yeh dad we have it - umm cant just put our hands on it at the moment Grrrrrrr)

Just wondering if it is possible to volt mod 2 cards and still run them in SLI? Anyone tried that, would be great to voltmod 2 GT cards and get the same performance as 2 GTX cards or even better..

Gunna give the 1.55v a shot. It will be my first volt mod. Before I jump in though, I want to clarify two things.

For one, in this picture, the VGPU, that is where you read the GPU voltage right?

Now, prepare for the ultimate noob question. I have never used a multimeter before. I just take the red and put it to the VGPU read point, and then ground the black (touch a screw or something)?

And it's not a n00b question... well it is LOL but when you don't ask you won't know right?
Just touch a screw yes, or the bottom of your case, I use a spot that has a little hole in it so I don't have to hold it the whole time while measuring... and the red one goes to the reading point... good luck, let us know!

Sounds good. The read point on the card, is that a hole? I am having a hard time telling fromt he pics, but it looks like it.

There are like dozens of points you can use for ground. Your case might be ground, or the bracket of the video card. You can also use one of the two black cable sockets on the molex connector, which is convenient because the probe stays there and frees up a hand.

It doesnt matter which probe you put to which point (ie red or black), as long as one is on ground and the other is on the measure point. If you reverse them, the readout will just be negative. However, it is absolutely crucial that you have the multimeter set for the right settings. Ie, it should be for DC Voltage, and within the range you are measuring. If you accidentally left it as ohmeter (measuring resistance) or the selection dial didn't click into place, you could be in for some really beautifull but costly fireworks.

several people already asked this. The answer is: what does voltmodding have to do with SLI? SLI compatibility used to be problem because of need for matching BIOS, but as far as I know, such restriction was removed in recent drivers. In SLI both cards will run the same clockspeeds.. whatever both can do.

Any such questions about 24/7 dont have an answer. Nobody has had a 7900GT stressed for 3 months, let alone 6 or even 12 months, so not sure what can happen in the long road. Even if somebody did that there is no guarantee you would be able too, because of different components. Overvolting will certainly not make it any easier for the voltage regulation circuitry or the GPU.. and combined with the additional heat and increased frequency, will cut short the life of your video card. How much is anybody's guess.

IMHO, you should be fine as long as idle and load temps are reasonable, you take extra precaution to cool the voltage regulation circuitry at the back of the card, and clock the card to stable levels where you dont experience artifacts, lockups or any other instability.

I finally got my xfx 7900gt. woot. :)

I did the 1.5v mod using the 50k resistor. I used two 100k in parallel (which equals 50K) since radioshack does not sell 50ks and tied them to one of the holes on the side of the card.

I also added copper stick-on heatsinks to those two chips that get boiling hot.

At 1.5v and 650mhz with the stock cooler the temp reached 90c and kept climbing. I used the "3D view" in ATI tool to put the load on the GPU.

So I installed THIS click for the picture! BoowAAAA!!! Yes a blower fan goes on top.

Temps never go over 52c with the medium fan speed setting and I have it clocked at 695mhz. Its the absolute top of the line VGA cooler to date. Blows away anything arctic cooling or thermaltake can muster. With the fan setting on high temp never go over 49c

I'm going to do the 1.6v and 1.7 volt mod soon and will also be removing the current limiting resistors. I will update with temps and clocks.

I don't mean to yell or anything, but READ THE STICKY!. Those aren't current limiting resistors. They are there to balance the load between two mosfets equally. Don't remove them. You shouldn't need to even up to 1.7v.

Im gettin some issues with the memory vmod.

When i put down the resistor to around 580ohms (memory volts around 2.1) the card got a lot of artifacts at crappy clocks (lower than without vmod) could it be an over voltaje protection issue??

Oh yeah sure, uh hum...

Have you read the thread? There are many pictures of people doing voltmod replacing resistor and/or conductive ink. I dont think you can change voltage in VGA BIOS yet.. if you could, I suppose people wouldn't be messing around with conductive ink and SMD resistors.

Onion, where did you get that beautiful heatsink for the video card.. and how did you mount it. Does it come with appropriate mounting already, or time to take out the old 3/16" and power drill

I know this thread is about GT's but some GTX stuff also. Can the 7900gtx be volt modded by connecting pins 30-31-and 32 together? I tried to follow the thread but it goes back and forth between what can be done and what can't.

that's cool ill consider that :D better than 700cu..what about 900cu? so you can pick our own 80-120mm fan to mount near by it? how is the standard cross fan compared

do you guys BGA ramsinks will work, i would like to get TSOP (longer and skinnier) like the ram on system memory but newegg etc dont have them but the OCZ copper BGA, square, ones are widely found. And newegg has the VF1-plus cooler in stock so just want to get it @ one time, I found TSOP ramsinks at some small website but charges up the butt for shipping.

I think you are pushing the core a bit too much on that 720MHz bench..the score is far from what it should be.
Try lower it down to 700Mhz or so and you should see a much better score..11k+ is what you shall have ;)

yah and its better @ that point to raise the memory, so vmem mod might be needed, but definately go for 1800+ for memory :)
