Found out another "bug" with the K8NS Ultra. I have been using this MOBO in my surfing/gaming rig for 3-4 months, and the other day I swapped it for a Neo2.
With the GB my max OC (gpu) on x800xt pe was 580 .. 570 for 24/7
With the Neo2 im at 615 rock stable. Running 600/600 for 24/7.
Not only does the x800 perform better clock for clock on the MSI, it overclocks a lot better to.
The K8NS s754 i had killed my best clawhammer (2.85Ghz) and a replacement Newcastle. And now this x800 issue. One thing is for sure. NO more Gigabyte for me. EVER.
Would any of you having experiences with this board once again choose this if the alternative was a K8N Neo2?
Im thinking about changing just for the fun of it...
Would it be fun?
Never.Quote:

Can I do the 3.3v vdimm mod from back of mobo on this k8ns ultra 939 like I did on my k8ns pro 754?
Here is the link of the mod:

Here is the Tweaks/Tips thread on the Ultra BM

The answer is yes according to that thread.
What is the correct Vdimm mod for the GA-K8NSC-939??
Hello all,
I have recently tried the cap mod for the Vdimm. It worked.. well not exactly as I expected. The 3.3V line was lowered as a result, but now, I could get the OCZ PC3200 Gold Edition (BH5) running at 230 (up from 209 with 2.7V)! Not quite 250, but anandtech needed like 3.4V to there, and although the voltage at the cap mod is 3.24V, I'm sure the memory is receiving quite a bit less (where do you measure?)
However, I noticed that the 5V, -5V, -12V voltages are way off in Sandra and fluctuate up and down continuously (-12V: -0.23 to -8.7). When I originally got the Venice 3000+ and K8NSC939 combo, I was happy that I was able to get up to 2.7Ghz, however, I can no longer do that. I'm quite sure I am using the same BIOS setting except perhaps that I am now using Radeon8500 instead of 6600GT/6800 and that I have 1GB of RAM instead of 512MB. At 9x, the system used to freeze at around 303fsb (3x and HTT +0.2), but now it happens at 294fsb (2464Mhz). Sure could be HTT problem, but I re-checked my max HTT (at 3xHTT and 6x CPU multi) and its still 315. So what is going on? Ambient temp too high.. I ran air conditioner overnight and by morning was sub 15C, and rechecked and same results... according to Sandra and BIOS CPU barely gets close to 50C (45-47). And, I tried another power supply with same results. (I did all this first with cap mod and then without) What happened?
Also, can I flash other K8NS BIOS onto this board.. anybody else tried? I am using F2 bios now.
Thanks all.
Forgot to mention a fee details:
1. Measured the 5V and 12V at ATX, and they are 5.02V (steady), and 12.01-12.02V (minor fluctuation).
2. Playing BF2 screen sometimes momentarily turns off and I hear whining sound as computer struggles to live. Usually it freezes the computr. Had it happen several times when I turn the computer on. (all this running measily 2.1Ghz and RAdeon8500)
3. Ran Prime95 for about an hour at 290+ fsb with no probs. windows memtest at 229, for hours.
4. Lower overclock regardless of Top Performance setting in BIOS. 2.7Ghz achieved before with 1.7V in bios, which was aobut 1.66 according to CPU-Z.
5. Also, tried reseating the board in the case, and moved power cables away from the board for fear of interference... perhaps its the wireless causing it?
Potential new Athlon64 consumer: dont be discouraged.. for the price combo this board rox. I mean, who am I to complain for getting only 800Mhz more than I bought. Its not like I really need to get 30s SuperPi1M -_-
BIOS updates for K8NSNXP-939 and K8NS Ultra-939
Date:2005/7/22
Description:Update CPU code
Support Dual Core CPU's
K8NSNXP-939 BIOS F11
K8NS Ultra-939 BIOS F8
Cap mod = bad.
In short: windows memtest errors within 5%. Regardless of PSU 3.3V level... and down to 150Mhz! So what if my BH5 works OK up to nearly 240Mhz with the mod if it craps out in memtest (prime95 was ok though)... took off mod and settle for dinky ~210Mhjz... -_-
Just to toss this in,
My K8NS ultra 939 games at 282x10@1.6v, 166 mem divider with my twinx pc3200 2.5 3 3 8 (+3200 venice)
Slowly pushing it higher....havent figured out the trick to getting the HTT up nice and high and being able to drop the cpu mult....so far my fastest benchies have been by shoving the overall mhz to the ceiling.
F6 bios
anyone else's board start squeeling when placed under heavy loads? Can't figure out what that noise is....
Inductors maybe...
maybe its even those power MOSFETs...
perhaps its just you squeeling at the delight of such high HTT speed!
Highest HTT on my board is in the 310-315 area... can't recall exactly what it was, but my CPU can't do anywhere near 2.7Ghz so no point. Perhaps if I replaced those dinky capacitors with big proper ones.. or just rewired the power delivery circuitry altogether.. you know, beefen it up a bit. I so envy 2.8Ghz.
can any one here tell me what this area controls
pics are in my previous post

I cannot for the life of me get my HTT over 280ish stable. 282 almost works well enough for me, but not quiet.
I've read this thread like 100 times, lol, can anyone offer some personal experiance with the k8ns ultra 939 and getting 300+ HTT? What bios did you use, what steps did you take to get there.
Also, I do all my overclocking from the bios, are people really having more success using clockgen/ntune to o/c this board? And I go that route, I assume I need to just leave most of the ram/cpu settings at factory in the bios?
3ghz or 300htt ! rawr! I want one or the other!
I am having the same problem here Deimos. :(Quote:

See AaronATX, there is this thing called "a limit". You can't raise the CPU speed indefinetly. Doesn't matter what kind of cooling you have. And judging from your sig you are using 10x cpu multi, so already at 2800Mhz which is pretty high. If you want to see if your board can do higher HTT you would have to lower the multiplier (ex 9). Then you would be at 2520Mhz CPU speed... and have a bit of room for higher HTT. You should also be using a much lower memory divider (ex 133) to rule out memory limitation problems.
Rosted: I dont think the hardware monitoring chip on the board is connected to +5, -5, -12. The fluctuations just look like noise. Likewise for battery voltage.
What specific problems is games (details!!)?
Latest K8NS Ultra bios has 2.85V option? Is it F8? And would somebody well versed in assembly be able to modify K8NSC-939 BIOS to also include 2.85V option. Even if I was crazy to try, can't just flash Ultra bios onto k8nsc because 512kb vs 256kb!!
lol, yes I am aware of this. I spent all weekend benching and trying different configs, timings, and voltages only to find out I had it as fast as it will go on 1.6 volts.
I was doubting my overclock because all of the "OMG HTT RULEZ" I keep reading. My setup is faster @ 275-280htt than 315-320 with a lower cpu multi.

Is there any BIOS for any K8NS XXX -939 mobo that has +0.3V for Vdimm??
Hi Deimos, I was jus using Rosted's account until I got one ( he is a friend )
First I will put here all my system.
Mobo GA-K8NSC 939
A64 3000+ Winchester ( with Zalman Cooler )
2 x 512 COrsair value 400 Mhz
EVGA 6800 128 MB ( with Zalman cooler )
Audigy 2 ZS
SATA 80 GB Seagate
PSU Thermaltake 480 watts
Well, the problem is, when I am playing games ( any game ), the computer just freezes with 10 minutes or less and a noise start coming from the speakers. Crtl+ ALt + Del doesn't work, so I have to press the reset button.
But, the most weird thing is, when I am doing OC the system just runs fine, no freezes. I don't know what to do anymore. Here is the config under OC.
FSB: 245
HT: 4x
Memory: 200 ( 2.5-3-3-8)
Vcore: 1,425
Obs: The drivers are the last WHQL certified for all hardware.
Please, any suggestion will be nice. Thanks...
James Cash:
Well James, it sound pretty serious.
1. Turn down HTT to 3x, 4x at 245 is close to borderline for problems.
2. What is your memory divider. If you want to use 245, set it to 150 or 133.
3. Try disabling Fast Writes in the BIOS
4. Does the cable with connector (molex) to plug into 6800 have any connections to anything else. The cable usually has 3-4 connectors.. and none of them should be used, except for the single one pluged into the card.
5. It quite possible you have poor contact with heatsink for the gpu. Its really difficult to judge just by the temps. If you notice all the games going haywire after a bit of suttering and freezing, then its likely heat.
6. Which driver are you using?
What are you using to test overclock stability? Prime95 torture for 1-2hrs is good start. SuperPi 32M is ok. Windows Memtest is essential. For 3d rthdribl and 3dmark05.
Sorta sounds like the agp/pci lock isnt functioning correctly. Try setting the bios to 201/67 and use clockgen to overclock.
