I think the HD DVD format is going to win myself, wich is non compatible with Blue Ray (The other HD format). :)
They do make HD DVD drives that handle both formats (HD DVD and Blue Ray), but of cource must be marked as such.
One other thing to consider, is the HD Player software you plan on using. I am a full blown registered CyberLink member, proudly running PowerDVD Version 7.3(Ultra). :)
I was lucky that my HD DVD drive that came stock in my HP Pavilion m7690n, was listed on CyberLink's home page as a supported drive.
Moral is, check the player software you like, to see if it officially supports one of the two drives your considering. It may help you to decide between the two.
That's funny, pretty much all the movie distributors think otherwise.Quote:

I have heard exactly the oppisite. It seems Sony want's to control the content of the movies put on the BlueRay format. No Adult movies. As you can imagine this isn't going over big with Holywierd.

I have no desire to get a :banana::banana::banana: collection going myself, but when the big Betamax vs VHS format battle was raging, it was the :banana::banana::banana: industry that made the deciding factor that VHS was the winner....
Many feel it will happen again.
There are still lots of members in both camps, and I expect the war to rage on for a while yet befor one clear winner immerges.

The difference between the betamax and vhs war and this one is that the :banana::banana::banana: industry was involved in that war compared to not being involved in this one. They really don't have a sway. During the previous war, the :banana::banana::banana: industry went with the inexpensive way of distributing their flicks. Not only are you not going to really find the :banana::banana::banana: industry jumping on using HD discs for their flicks because of the cost, but HD means you see every little detail on someone's body. The people watching these things aren't going want to see the wrinkles or small freckles on their favorite Ms. Betty's body that they use to think was smooth and perfect from the VHS/DVD quality smoothing ;)
Needless to say, at this point HD DVD has a slim hope at making a comeback. There have been various speculations of Microsoft releasing v2 of the xbox 360 w/ an integrated HD-DVD player among the other things they have planned for it (ie IPTV support). But, Microsoft went to claim that when the development goes underway, they'll go with whichever format has a stronghold in the market. Given that it's BluRay, obviously putting a BluRay player in the xbox 360 will further help push BluRay tremendously.
Sony has realised in its bid to win the format war, it had to relinquish control over what would be released:Quote:

First :banana::banana::banana: film released on Jan 4th.
Hustler and Playboy following suit.
Your links are basically a year old and more, this is what the current situation looks like:

And it looks like things are only going to get worse, with Paramount looking to use an opt out clause and joining the Blu-Ray camp.
Basically you can go out and buy a Blu-Ray player now and feel pretty safe.
Wow, I didn't know Sony caved on that...
I wonder if HP will start putting Blue Ray players in their Media PC's then?
More than likely all the companies will follow suit. Players are reasonably cheap now, the burners however are still ridiculously expensive.Quote:
