When I overclock to 2.7GHz and run prime95 torture test, it hovers around 50 degrees celsius I'm pretty sure that's still within the thermal envelope but I'm hoping a better cooler will bring that down and allow me to run a slower quieter fan.

It seems that on my P4P800 Deluxe, I'm hitting a wall with the memory (225fsb). I'm currently using 2x512 Crucial Ballistix PC3200 and I managed to get it stable at 1:1 running CL2.5 but only if I set all the other timings to their slowest.

I've got 2x1024 Mushkin XP4000 PC4000 at my disposal and I'm going to give them a try and see if I can do any better.

Ok. I'm running prime95 torture test (blend) at 2.7GHz (1.55v) with my new Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu. It's hovering around 43 degrees Celsius.

I can't seem to get it to boot past 225 FSB. I'm not sure at this point if it's the processor, the motherboard, or the memory, but relaxing the memory timings with two different sets of memory modules didn't make any difference.

I also swapped in a different more powerful high-quality power supply, just in case.

I've got the Vcore in the BIOS cranked up to the maximum. The setting says 1.60v but according to SpeedFan, the Vcore is 1.55-1.57.

I'm wondering if more voltage will help. Can you do the easy vcore wire mod in addition to the BIOS adjustment? If so, how do you know what the actual voltage is?

Well after googling a bit, I think I'm running into the infamous p4p800 "voltage droop" problem.

You should be able to get more FSB if you boot at 200 or 201 -- then raise the FSB more in windows (250+ depending on your RAM) using clockgen.

I can boot into windows at 225, but if I then try to bump the FSB up with clockgen, it crashes.

no not at this point cause in q4-06 e4300 c2d's are out have 8x multi and more then likly can go from 800fsb to 1066 no problem. i read that intel plans to price it at the 150 mark. would be the best bang for buck when released. i cant suggest to anyone atm a dothan setup unless you got a really good deal for all of it togher. i sold the mobo/ram/ct-479/dothan 730 @2.4ghz for $125, was a great gaming machine.

...then use nylon washers and longer screws to raise it up to the right level so you can use any P4 heatsink without modification.

i have a overclocked p4p800-e deluxe with ct-479 and a dothan 730. cpu was overclocked to 2.7Ghz stable. i havent turned the machine on in the past 2-3 weeks, yesterday when i tried, the machine starts. goes to the post screen and shuts down. keep repeating this. sometimes it shuts down right away when it gets to post screen. sometimes it shuts at scanning ide drives.
I tried the cmos clear, i also see the cpu and the memory are detected correctly on the post screen.
anybody have seen this issue before?

I am running a 730 P-M and the stock CT-479 cooler, 1.424V core a 227fsb x 11=2.5ghz on a P4C800-E, with corsair value ram pc3200 SPD cas2.5,3,3,8 @ 1:1 so ram is at 227 at stock timings, 2.85V, also running a 9800pro and true 550watt PSU.

Idel cpu temps is 37C and full load is 50C

is this the best deal for a good cooler??? or can somebody post a link to a better deal in the USA please, thanks.

I have the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU.

I have two motherboards that I've tried my CPU in. In my P4C800, I'm seeing idle temps at 37C *with* my Zalman. Under full load, it hits 50C. I really don't understand what's going on. It doesn't appear to be overvolting it but the heat output would suggest that must be the case. It also won't overclock as high. I can only boot at 2.6GHz and it's far from stable.

However in my P4P800, it idles around 30C and hits about 45C under full load when overclocked to 2.7GHz with the voltage cranked up to 1.6V. At the stock speed (1.6GHz) and voltage it idles at 28C and hits 35C under full load.

$25.95 is the best price I've found for the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU.

It's dead simple to mount too:

1) purchase longer 6-32 x 1 inch machine screws Lowes/Home Depot
2) remove the fan on the zalman cooler
3) flip over the "floating bracket" that was under the fan
4) re-attach the fan
5) install the aluminum bars upside down into the P4 retention bracket
6) screw down the heatsink with machine screws purchased in step 1 (make sure that the fan power wire is on the same side as the power cable on the adapter.

Just a tip though, before you try to install the new cooler, take the stock ASUS cooler and carefully peel the felt spacer/shim thingy off the bottom. Now carefully stick it on your CPU instead. That will help protect the core from being crushed when you install the new (much heavier) cooler.

Also, it's a little tricky to work around the wires on the adapter power plug. Many people pry off the white plastic base and bend the pins over. If you're careful, it's not really necessary. You can install it by just bending the power wires out of the way and being very careful to not pinch them when tightening down the heatsink.

On most motherboards, you can adjust the CPU VCORE voltage in the BIOS. My Pentium M seems to do 2.6GHz at about 1.45 volts. If I bump it to 1.55 volts, I can get it about 99% stable at 2.7GHz. If I bump it to 1.6v, I can boot into windows at 2.8GHz but it's nowhere near stable.

If you don't have BIOS options, you can do the "easy wire mod" to bump it up to 1.5 volts. Check a few posts back, I posted a picture of it.

Also, and I'm not positive about this, but I believe that when the jumpers on the CT-479 are set to "400", it sends more voltage to the CPU than when you have them set at "533". However, I'm not sure how much and if it would even make a difference.

Is here anybody, who tested Celeron M380 max oc ?
I have mine m370 running at 2,55 Ghz. Max oc is near 2,6 ghz.
I think the fsb cannt be reached, because is 100 fsb. Anything over 170 fsb isnt 100 stable :-(

And maxfsb is also around that 170.
Imo most of all these celerys do about fsb164-170 without mod but some also ~185

I secured another Pentium M 730 off of ebay for $45 and another CT-479 from eWiz for $42 and went to work on my ASUS P4P800-VM.

Since the P4P800-VM doesn't offer vcore adjustment or FSB adjustment in the BIOS, I did the easy u-wire mod on the adapter to bump the core voltage to 1.55V.

I put the CT-479 jumpers on the 533 setting.

In the BIOS, I set the memory speed to 266 (to get the 1:1 memory divider) and the memory timings to auto by SPD. If I tried to manually set the memory timings, it would immediately crash in windows so leaving it at auto was the only option.

After booting into windows I have...
CPU - 1600MHz (133x12)
MEM - 133MHz (1:1)

Then it was a simple matter of firing up Clockgen and cranking the FSB as far as I could go. With this CPU, 4 sticks of memory, and the stock ASUS cooler, I was able to get the FSB up to 196.1 and have it still be stable during a Prime95 (blend) torture test.

I can get the FSB a few clicks higher but not stable. If I go to 198 it immediately crashes windows.

So my results so far are...

CPU - 2352MHz (196.1x12)
MEM - 196.1MHz (1:1)
Prime95 blend torture test full load: 65C

I tried this CPU in my other system that happily runs at 2760MHz (230x12) and this CPU doesn't fare nearly as well so it's likely that I've reached the limit for this CPU.

I'm pretty happy with the results, but I can probably do better so here's some things I might try to see if they make any difference...

better heatsink / better memory / less sticks of memory

I probably won't do the CT-479 mod on this one because that was a LOT of work and I don't think it really made all that much difference.

So you can assure me upping the Vcore in the BIOS is possible with a CT479?

BIOS vcore options work perfectly, just like they do with P4s.

I have a problem where high vcore limits my FSB overclock. 1.425v vcore lets me memtest stable at 260MHz, but 1.55v vcore gives me only 240MHz, and 1.6v gives me 235MHz. Anyone else get this? The errors show up in memtest86+ test #7, by the way...

OMG and here i was considering voltmods, because i read somewhere that vCore + Asus CT479 wouldnt work. :X

I did a little more playing around with my P4P800-VM system last night and I discovered something really strange.

The way the system was set up, I had 2GB of memory. Four 512MB sticks, all generic cheapo memory. I set the memory settings to auto by SPD in the BIOS and set the memory speed to 266. Then in windows, I was able to crank the CPU front side bus up to 2.2GHz. I could go as high as 2.4GHz but it would randomly lock up after a while, but 2.2GHz was rock stable.

Last night, I swapped out the memory and replaced it with two Crucial TWINX 1GB sticks. Setting all the BIOS settings exactly the same, I boot into windows and I cannot overclock using clockgen *AT ALL*. Even slightly overclocking results in a hard lock or reboot.

I even tried going into the BIOS and manually setting the latency settings and it makes no difference. I know the memory is good because it's been in my main system for about a year with no problems.

From my experiments before, I'm pretty sure that I have to leave the latency settings in the BIOS on auto by SPD. I'm thinking that for the new memory, it must be picking settings that are too low and crash the computer when overclocking. With the old memory, the default timings were so crappy, that it was ok when overclocked. Or at least, that seems like what's happening. Maybe the BIOS does something special when you use 4 memory modules. Maybe they reduce the timings or something to make it more stable.

Anyway, to sum up, I'm surprised. This is the first time that I've ever seen a system that will overclock *BETTER* when you use more sticks and crappier memory. Usually, it's exactly the opposite.

Lately I discovered that a 0501 BETA BIOS is available for P4GPL-X motherboard. Since I have two P4GPL-X boards running I'm interested whether the BIOS has any benefits over the official 0401. Anyone who knows - please post!

As a sidenote: Celeron M4xx srs uses the same rewired socket as Core Duos. Thus I believe that it will not work with adapter.

Thanks 459, after what I've read, I think you are right. M4xx are Yonah instead of Dothan based, and I don't think they are supported by CT-479.

Hello, there`s a way to get more on those 7x5 CPUs, Kamerat on this forum got some celeron way beyond that too (it`s the same trouble with the Celly-Ms and Pentium Ms that are 100FSB stock). Some soldering to the 3.3V are the way to go.

2x 512 Winbond BH5 (Twinmos)
Pentium M 740

I found the CT479 Mod by Hipro in this forum.
Cause of my miserable soldering knowlegde, I buy a ready-modded Adapter.... Hipro Mod + VCCA mod

And thats my problem:
with my unmodded adpater, my system can boot with 210x13= 2730 (it wasnt rockstable at all, but 24h prime stable.... very rare reboots or freezes)
VCore was in BIOS @ 1,6V (CPUz 1,576)
24/7 settings: 201x13 @ 1,376

Now with the modded one, the highest clock is under 203x13=2639 @ 1,576V
And i have to increase Vcore to 1,475V for my 24/7 settings.

What did I wrong?
VCCA is on 1,931V.... should I adjust it to 2,2v or higher?

Neither adpater FSB nor RAM are the limited factors.... I tested it with lower multiplier an divider.... so the problem must be on the adapter... because the CPU boot at 210x13....

Any details or ideas?

Try to reseat your heatsink. It may be overheating. Also, did you perform the Vdroop mod for the P4C800-Deluxe MB? Your cpu may not be getting enough volts to go up that high.

My P4C800-DLX had the vdroop mod which made the system very stable. I was also running a Pentium M 740 @ 2.9 GHZ. I'm running on a non-modded adapter.

I think it's time to revisit the Dothan again! :D

Up the vcore to 1.6 or a little more. I had to set it at that to boot at 220x13. The drooping in the MB made it unstable for any power use (CPU @ 100%) until I performed the vdroop mod. Also, make sure your PCIE frequency is also set to Target FSB/2.2 to stabilize the system. Mine is set at 110 right now.

Its a AGP Board ;)

I have done it.... very often.... Board P4C800 Dlx... 1021.005 BIOS

Did I get a lousy chip? I have a 740 on a P4C800 with the latest beta bios, allowing mem dividers and vcore adjustment, but I only get 2460mhz stable on default vcore - but I do not get one single mhz more from raising vcore. Cooled by a CNPS7000ACU @ 5v.

Mem divider used so this is not my PC3200 sticks making trouble. My not very impressive overclocking result could of course be due to a bad chip, but since i max out at default vcore i suspect there is something else that stops me from pushing the 740 further. Any ideas what that could be?

EDIT: If i exeed the speed described above the board freezes @ post screen. This also happens if i use lower mp and higher fsb to get past ~2.4 ghz.

Man that sucks. I am trying to get my HTPC to playback hddvd/bd and my laptop has just donated its Dothan for the purpose - and i think with 100-200 mhz more it would play smoothly.

Funny thing is that it reaches its limit @ stock vcore, and it will not go one single mhz further with more juice. Never seen that on any chip before.

I guess my laptop is will get its cpu back and my HTPC will soon be upgraded with a cheap Asrock mobo and an E4300.

Had one like that before, a celeron 666MHz that could only do 750MHz whatever cooler or Voltage I slapped it with. After some months burning it in it went straight beyond 1GHz. :)

Its been so long but I think some motherboards and bios didnt alow vcore change none E versions?

my dothan is still running 1.6V over two years now, wifes rig.

Well this bios/mobo combo allows for vcore adjustments. Cpu-z verifies that vcore actually changes.

I doubt anyone reads this thread, but i have to share my "failure".
did the vcore and vdrop mod on mbo, have already adapter full modded, and even with 1.8V my 740 it isn't stable (i cannot get to desktop, boots wins, but freezes at welcome screen) at 2796MHz (233x12)... and fsb wall is at 238...
I'm very disapointed now:(
To put or not to put more V's? Now it runs on 1.66V 2760MHz, and is unstable on 213x13 even with 1.75V...
