wow - i thought blank cpu's had gone out with the slot 1/2 !
Not so much with multi-socket enterprise level stuff, it seems. I'm not 100% certain you NEED one to run one of these boards on a single processor, but I know the blanks exist (product code ABBUPCONFIG).
it should look something like this i'd guess.

is ebay article 380277252795 a suitable HS for sossy?
Hey, Tiro ... remember back when we were talking temperature on these things? Well I got jack of seeing a substantial (imho) difference in core temperatures so I cleaned and remounted my heatsinks today.
CPU1: 26 and 31C
CPU2: 32 and 31C
One core (the second last one) was getting up to 47C during the day before. Happier now.
can't wait to get mine ;)
Of course!
I don't think I've ever taken idle temps on this thing.
Gone up a little now with the evap off (and it's 20:49)

A 6k fan? Yep. I have an itty bitty CPU fan from a Pentium 200 on the Northbridge. You wouldn't know it was there the thing is so quiet. I also have two CPU fans from a couple of old Celeron 1.7s (s478) that I've modified to fit the OEM heatsinks, but for some reason they don't show up in the sensor readings.
tiro, what did you do to mount the Cooljag Falcon Mini Chipset Cooler
on your sammy? It looks like I will be building another one. Just need to find heatsinks.
Cool. I would like to see how you did it.
ok here is part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEf6qeBxk9I
& here is part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWlMPARnmLY
I *highly recommend watching with pen & paper in hand
excuse the mono-tone voice
Nice job on the vid. I hope to put it to use.
Wow, it is that sensitive to mount pressure? I wouldn't have guessed that.
Question - why did you not use the metal plate that came with the board? I would think it would serve the purpose of the washers, since it has a smaller hole in it.
Nicely done and very nice effect..
What diameter are those fans? 60mm?
nice video Tiro - very informative
keep in mind guys, you are most likely NOT to get better temps than the stock HSs, unfortunately :(
i was thinking about it earlier - i wonder how the temps would be using something like the thermalright HR05-IFX? The mounting mechanism used by tiro wouldn't be hard to modify to suit.
I personally wonder if the TR-HR05-IFX would be better than the falcon mini's... the HR's are Cu+Alu & 1HP.. the Mini's are 100% Cu & 3HPs.. the only thing in the HR's favour is the fin surface area..
either way, I think the Mini's are beat by the stock/oem HSs due to outright mass
I should be receiving a sossaman setup soon  so ill give it a try. The TR heatsinks arn't that much money either but i'm sure i have one around here somewhere
I need some advice on what ram I need to get. I have another Intel board coming. been looking on the Egg and Ebay. Just not sure what to get. Thanks for any help.

Those prices are not that good because the shipping is about $5 bringing the price up to $15 per dimm.
RAM just needs to be ECC REG DDR2-400 CL3 memory. Prices will vary, but I think watching and auction can get a better deal.
220699328690 - 2x512MB dimms starting 9.99 with free shipping.
150524621608 - 4x1GB dimms at 12.50 with 2.99 shipping. unsure what it will be.
I grabbed 8 x 512MB about 2 weeks ago for $19 shipped on ebay. I sent Movieman 4 of those since it was a great deal.
Might just take some time to find the right auction.
Thanks guys. I will keep an eye out. I might have found a pair of the stock heatsinks. Would be alot easier and quicker.
I'm thinking of putting together a mod guide to turn standard s604 and s771 heatsinks into something that you can use on a Sossaman ... but it's gonna need some detailed measurements of all three kinds of 'sinks. If I can get it worked out it will open up a whole load of source units for the Intel boards.
IS it the step in the Abbheatsink that make is different from the others?
I found to places that show the ABBHEATSINK in stock. Just my luck they are closed. I emailed them to see how many they have. I may have to buy all that they have.
I have a bid on a gig of ram. I called a place about the abbheatsinks. The guy said the web should them in stock. He took my number and said he would check and call me back. If I don't hear back from them I may get Dave to give them a call.
For heatsinks for a sossaman its very easy to use stock socket 604 sinks on the intel board. All I did was cut off at the point were the heatsink becomes thinner on the base and take off the mounting screws so theirs nothing to hit the board then just use some machine screws springs and nuts and your good. load is at 40 or so in a rather warm room. Thinking I might do up some more heatsinks if anyone is intrested in a bolt on solution for cooling.
Any chance you can post some pics? It would help alot to see.
Unfortunately more brittle and sensitive than my old opteron. I had that thing delidded, and then the heatsink cranked down really tight, and it was just fine. But these sossamans seem to be touchy about mounting pressure, as tiro noticed earlier - just a tad too much pressure and no POST.
It shouldn't be hard to replicate the pressure of the genuine heatsink, but accurate measurements will be needed.
For some reason I've been waking anywhere between 5 and 6am every freaking day this last week. I have NO idea why and I am NOT happy about it.
In the mean while I've been trying to find design specs for the various heat sink solutions for s604 and s771 and having sod all success. I'm starting to think the easiest method might be to get whichever one doesn't touch the CPU on the Intel boards and devise some kind of shim to make up the difference ... unless it's only a few thou, then it would be too fragile. If there's about a 3mm gap it shouldn't be too hard to make spacers to suit, but without the exact dimensions it ain't gonna work. I'm not sure ho much a piece of copper one inch square by about 1/8 inch thick with close to mirror finish on both faces would cost to make.
hey guys just thought I would show what I used on my first sossaman build since the hs I bought for 479 socket were much to small :(
Here is the idea I had since the socket 604 heatsinks I had looked like that almost fit.
After some hack sawing and a few words the edges where gone and just need to mount them with some screws and stuff.
Thats them mounted I just set one 120mm fan on top a Yate loon slow speed thing and they always stay below 40 under load. I see lots of these HS on ebay and it seemed to work well.
interesting - i have about 20 of those at work :D
Luckygriff - those are NICE! :yepp:
temps? :D
Looking right now room is maybe 20 to 25 C the hottest core is 40 C they don't creep any higher from what ive seen but when I get the room temp around 15 there only at 30 C with very little air flow. I think I could put more tension on the heatsinks but 40 C is not hot to me my Q6600 in the same area with a corsair A70 is around 65 C
Also this setup is pretty fun and a bit diffrent might have to get my other board I have up and running. Anyone seen any of the 15 watt 1.6 ghz cpus for sale.
Seems I got lucky on a pair of abbheatsinks. All I need to get now is a backplate and a psu. Working on the psu. The backplate I am about to order. I am going to keep working on finding more of the abbheatsinks as I know there are people here that could put them to use.
They may not be the prettiest things, but they're easy to fit and guaranteed to work well. It's just a pity they're not made of bright copper coz that'd be right purdy!
Well would you look at this! The Sossa-faerie has blessed me! (or shat in my Christmas stocking, one of the two)
Here's what turned up in the post this fine Monday morning

After some shoe-horning, drilling and blood loss the impossible happened!

Hint: that ain't a eATx case
Here tiz in it's now home next to Sausageman, my all-purpose proxy server  (the one on top has been moved, it's a P4 2.4 that's now holding my PPro 200 down to the desk, neither are running)

Looks good, now get a tiny fan on that puny aluminum HS on the SB, that DOES get very hot
Found a little fan that fits, but found that the case fan blows right across it already. It's only slightly warm as it is.
Stick the tiny fan on it then pull the case fan, that isn't needed and save some elec..;)
Just a single low speed cheapo 80mm exhaust fan is all you need, if that..:D
Sammy is one "Cool Dude"and as long as the NB and SB are cooled your golden.
Also find a low speed 120mm fan to replace those 2-80's on the cpu HS.
Set it soit points "up" like a pyrmirid and it will effectively cool both cpu's and the air that leaks out at the 7 O'clock position will cool the NB..
Save even MORE electrcity!
Did I tell you that I once put 2-80MM Vantec Tornadoes on a Sammy for an experiment and drove the loaded temps down to room temperature?
Then I'll rig something up with one of the 80s as this little fan (25mm) vibrates and SCREAMS! Move a ton of air for it's size, but it's just way too loud.
Trust Mick on this one, in MY case (and probably ONLY my case) that won't work. With my modified cases there's no room for a 120mm fan. The HDD and drive cage are in the way. I have to come up with something a little different to what will work for everybody else.
I've got the little fans running so they're not a problem ... as far as I can hear. If wifey complains I'll have to come up with something else.
There's a reason half my family call me "Hard-Way Russell" ... and the other half don't talk to me. :ROTF:
It isn't impossible to stick sammy in a non eATX case.... I did it a few months ago :D

Oh, before Dave gets on me about a single 120mm fan for the CPUs, those two 80s together pull the same or less than a 120mm does. They are very low power (and low airflow) fans.
If I had a higher efficiency PSU that would help a bit, the 400W Smartpower is only something like 75%.
Sparky, you just gave me an idea.
I have a OLD SM SC-750A case, orginally designed for a dual socket P3
http://www.bluesmoke.net/review3.html
Very old fulltower that I think I've posted builds in before.
Not that great for current systems BUT it will take a EATX board.
Might toss one in there for sheets and giggles..:D
That thing looks like it could weigh 70 pound empty
Yeah, but how easy would it be to work in!
 nice D_A
Incidentally, the Clean Water project is a bonanza for points on Sossamans running 32bit Linux without needing a ton of RAM. If, however, you DO have tons of RAM and a good connection (and a robust HDD) the Clean Energy project seems to have a straight connection to points Nirvana!

so im getting internets again soon. pretty excited to see how my sossi does :D
altho still gotta get a Harddrive for it loll.
na its running, just no boot to OS. just boots to the mobo command prompt.
also :D that corsair 400watt looks shmexy with the noctua 140mm fan.
(altho it is kinda funny seeing 35$ fan inside of a 40$ psu)
became very broke after putting this together.. soon hopefully a harddrive, and some internets.. i thought i was gona go crazy without internets for like 2months
get ready to come get some. :p:
I've discovered a fundamental problem with these machines. It troubles me greatly in fact.
The problem is:
The only way to see that sexy Xeon Boot Logo is to reboot the machine! :shakes:
I gotta work out how to make that boot screen into a wallpaper.
and I don't know about "boring"
Returning results is like sex
only without the court appearance.
I had a gig of ram show up today. Got it for 10.50 shipped. I have the rest of the parts on the way also. I look forward to building sammyD.
I found a place that has a pair of the abbheatsinks in stock. just got off the phone with them. I will gladly pass the info along to whomever wants them.
I found a place that wants over $700US for them ... I don't think so, Tim!
The place I found wants $20.70 each.
Yeah, they're all over the internet. Most places I've found so far just link back to that one.
I also found an ebay listing for a PAIR that ended at 99cents. <grieve>
Anyone using their Sossaman rig's dual purpose?
yeah, thats pretty much it - i just wondered if someone was using it as a file server
