maybe at stock yes but with merom having the same core and a far lower wattage maybe it will fly like mobiles usually do.
anyway until both are actually out how do we know which is in fact faster silicon?

The Merom will prolly be limited to the low fsb.
merom has two things going for it: high multipliers and possibly a better overclock due to low-voltage binning.Quote:

Conroe and Merom are the exact same, it will make no sense to make a Merom on desktop board since Conroe is already the exact same thing. Also, as you said before, the only possible difference is that Meroms will be binned for lower power consumption, but the flipside is that Conroes will be getting the higer clocking cores. If you want a Merom on a desktop just undervolt and underclock your Conroe. Overclocking will be interesting though since the FSB is already so high. Obviously the best for overclocking will be the XE for the unlocked multipliers. After that I just don't know, seems very likely FSB will limit you before the chip does. The 800mhz Conroes might help, but they are only 2MB cache which will negate and extra mhz. Seems like overclockers will almost be forced to buy the expensive chips for the high multipliers.
merom is supposed to move to higher fsb in '07 so i don't think they will have fsb limit.
also binning merom for 35watts and conroe for 65watts may lead to merom actually having all the best silicon.
intel also officially supports desktop mobile platform which will be the preference for business users who can save electricity running merom and using less aircon.
add that to the higher multiplier which may make it a lot easier to get decent clocks from a cpu without killing the chipsets and we may be in for a pleasant merom suprise

i thought i read somewhere that the XE conroes will be even more expensive (1,100-1,200)!! probably outrageous but they always like to charge high for those XE models! Either way, I can't wait to burn this crap s478 2.8e chip i have atm and get a conroe.

I also have the Merom 2.16 GHz and the N4L-VM motherboard, with no luck. I am having the same issue as Macaholic, above. The first post says USB works, and when I connect a USB keyboard, the POST screen does get past, but I can't enter the BIOS or anything still.
Any clues?
