k, thx Then I'll go with the ATI :)
Yeah I picked up my 1800XT 256 from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...00_Series.html (could probably find it cheaper if you looked) but I don't really have any reason to recommend it over a 7900GT (I know the IQ is quite a bit better than a friend's 7800GTX), although I personally wouldn't spend more on a 7900 because the 1800 is so practical for the money, even if it loses out now in the benches it will run anything you throw at it on full settings at V-sync
mongoled thanks for the welcome :D
i always visited XS, for a long long time (lots of years in that :P ), i had an account but its so long that i even forgot the login
anyway, im worse than i was now... i was really thinking if its really worth it to buy the x1900xt, i also have the budget really tight, i have to spend somewhere around U$1k, but i have to buy a psu, cpu, mobo, vga and ram in that... but as my pc is mainly for gaming, i dont mind spendin the most in the video card :)
from newegg:
- opteron 146 (or 3700+ san diego, $212 any, still deciding too, same price)
- nf4 ultra-d from DFI ($123)
- 2x1gb g.skill 2GHZ (-40 instant = $157 for 2gb ddr500! a bargain!)
- enermax liberty 500W ($110, after reading so many reviews)
ok, that adds for U$601... so i still got around $400 on the video card... but, the less the better... so, lets go to the VGAs (back on the subject)
X1800XT 512MB Sapphire, both Retail and OEM (out of stock but same price) = $349 ($289 for the 256MB version)
X1900XT 512MB Sapphire OEM = $439
eVGA/XFX 7900GT 256MB = $310~360
The cheapest is the X1800XT with 256MB...
Then the 7900GT from XFX, but this one has a lower clock ($309, 470/1370), and theres a $315 version with a little more clock (520/1500), and for 350/360, the extreme versions with more clock only...
well, the main problem for the 7900GT, IMO, is that u can only go for a 256MB version :( i truly wanted a 512mb, man i saw a 512mb vid card working, its like going from 512 to 1gb or 1gb to 2gb system ram, the games all runs smoth as silk even right after the loading ends... it really makes a difference when playing hi-end games on hi-resolution (like FEAR on 16x12 everything max details), and 512mb will problably make even more difference in FUTURE games (IMHO!)...
BUT, as i told before, the x1800xt is outdated, the new X1900XT gives a better performance in newer games especially in higher resolutions... but still, costs $100 more, which is a good difference...
So, which one should I choose??? I'm definitely going for 512mb, so, im between the x1800xt and the x1900xt... is the x1900xt worth the $100 more??
(whew, sorry for the lenghty post, and sorry for the bad english too, im brazilian  )
I got an 7900GT with 333euros and pushed it to 530-1550....
Faster than a X1800XT and almost the same with the X1900XT.
For those who can buy soon, are willing to shell out a fair amount up front, and will push for rebates, go for the $430 XTX deal at Monarch :D
$430 XTX after double rebate at Monarch

I'm having the same exact problem! I cannot decide. X1800XT vs. 7900GT.
I'm pretty much leaning towards the X1800XT though.. for the following reasons.
1. It's easer to OC. The 7900GT has some serious OVP. With the X1800XT, you can adjust voltages on the fly.
2. The X1800XT's visual quality far surpasses the 7900GT, yet it performs relitively the same.
3. The X1800XT is a very overclockable video card. It can easily overclock high enough to break 10k+ in 3D 05 with the right computer configuration. The 7900GT is yet again, heavily limited by the OVP. It's not easy to get around, afaik you have to play with small resistors near the core... very risky.
4. The X1800XT is Cheaper. It's $309 retail at Newegg.com
5. The X1800XT has AVIVO
Etc.. etc..
Hope taht helps,
Nick
