man, not looking good. Up to 80c before you stopped it. I wonder what it would get too if you left it going? Was this witht he fan set to 100% via ATITool or overclocker utility? I am not insulting your testing just thought maybe you might have left it on default fan speed with 100% bringing better results. Switching the fan may bring better results but with it more noise. It seems the Accelero X2 is still better in this case. It too doesn't exhaust air out of the case but it is DEAD silent and still seems to keep temps around mid 70's which isn't too bad. The only other choice is the Zalman VF900 which I am still waiting for results on how it does on the X1900XTX. If not I guess I have no choice but to get the Accelero as I want to stick with air. I am not liking how one ram chip can't be cooled either. It will be that one chip that will die over time bringing the whole card down.
I appreciate greatly the time and money you put into testing this chinkgai, it is too bad it didn't turn out better. The fact that the fins get very hot means the cooler is working but still not enough for the high heat output of the X1900 cards. I am sure it will be fantastic for the X700. I think if they didn't remove 2 of the heatpipes it would bring temps down to the 70C for sure. I would have gladly payed a little more coin for that.

I would go all the way with a thin 120mmx28mm fan
I'll just throw down my opinion here.
There is probably a significant problem with appropriate airflow on the the fan mods. The 2 blocks of fins that immediately surround the heatpipes hardly get any airflow except for the dual 80mm, and that's only a small portion.
To maximize airflow, I'd probably go with 2x80's, but mount them right above the fin blocks, or at angles to direct the flow mostly thru the 2 blocks. I'd also consider the suck position to avoid high back pressure from the video card surface.
If you want to go with a single center fan, you should cut away the fan housing and use the shroud.
Does seem like somewhat disappointing results for a fairly good idea. I think it wouldn't be a problem that the main block is only connected to the fins via heatpipes, if they used 4 heatpipes. But they didn't.
Not sure why companies are so shy about making big coolers. I think a fair number of folks would be happy to have a quiet high performance exhaust video card cooling solution that would occupy 3 extra slots (leaving 2 slots open for a sound card and one spare). Yes, it won't work for SLI configurations, but I doubt this one would either.

yes, all the fans: the stock one, amd one, and two 80mm fans were all running at 100% so good observation cantank...if the stock fan was left at default...it'd most likely lock up cuz of heat
why did u leave it at 100%? cuz the connector it comes with does not fit on the connector on the card itself...so i plugged it in elsewhere

navig, if i did what you suggested, the flow is still not enough to remove the high amount of heat...unless u increase the flow significantly...but then it wont be quiet or even near quiet anymore. the pipes were very very hot to touch. it just needs to be dispersed with more heatpipes.
as for testing with the x700...works superb! no pics...but i'll jes give u a quick result:
x700pro with ghetto 9800 pro heatsink - 59c after 15 min of scanning with atitool
x700pro with evercool left in stock form (100%fan) - 46c after 15 min and 48c after 30 hr cuz the case got heated up i guess
A) If you told me I'd want to @#$% a video card cooler yesterday, I'd of told you your nutz.... COUGH the one on the right COUGH.
The heatpipes are upside down. The fins need to be on the bback of the card, have the pipes come out and around the otherside, and then it would be designed correctly.
Heat pipe works by boiling water on the core, the steam rises to the fins, condenses, and the water rolls back down hill to the core, to be boiled again.
If the core is HIGHER than the fin end of the pipe, the water will settle in the lower cooler end of the pipe, and its effectiveness will be reduced.
We need a 4 copper pipe cooler, which runs the pipes up with a 90degree bend at the top of the card, and the fin section would then sit straight up in the case, with a fan on it...or door fan blowing across it, or sucking air through the fins out of the case.
If you know what I mean. Then the pipes would work 100% and all the geometry would be correct.
BTW, I did a ghetto mod, took the fan section off the stock cooler, used a mod'd 60mm-to-80mm fan adapter, which I glued onto the stock cooler, alowing me to mount a 80mm fan directly where the stock buzzsaw fan sat.
Much quieter, 66C max load at 657/725.... cost $10.
