Using Storm without IHS

which washers???

I dont use the big white washer that goes under the top bracket. I dont get contact if I do.

do you still use the bracket??

Yeah I used everything that it came with except those little white washers that go between the LOTES bracket and the MB.

I still have IHS on my 170 but removed the bracket and just screwed the storm down with the recommended hardware...why keep using the bracket?

I dont know, I just followed what it said, never had any issues until I took the IHS off and had to remove the white washers. Its probably so you dont crush the core, plus it lines it up correctly.

It lines up correctly but I found it did nothing for keeping alignment on my dfi. Once you've tightened everything down you can notice that the bracket can easily swivel back and forth 1-2mm. I took this as not helping anything structurally. Maybe I'm wrong? The screws are tight and unmovable but the bracket can rock/swivel loosely.

This is mainly due to the thermal paste used. Blocks mounting mechanisms are designed to apply downward force and not to prevent swiveling (at a reasonable level of course).
Unless your block moves along a verical/horizontal direction, u're fine.

Well Im sure either way it doesnt do anything to temps.

I had to leave the white washers out as well. One thing I did notice just recently though is the screws do bottom out against the mobo tray, but the block is on really tight at that point.

Funny that you mention that...after I put the block on and was putting the motherboard tray back in, I noticed that my board was bowing upwards as a result of putting the screws down too tight. The backplate was being pulled up on either side like a 'C'. :eek:

Guess how far down they are now? Yep, right about the mobo tray's depth. So, now I take back what I said before about drilling the holes in the tray. Turns out it isn't necessary.

Oh well, drill and learn 'eh? :)
