The main issue with the XP coolers is the clamping force and the possibility cracking the core due to uneven/excessive force. You have to be carefull to hold the HS level while clamping all 4 clips so you put even pressure all around.
To limit the clamping force, I took only 2mm off the legs of the bracket instead of the 3mm or so that is lost by removing the IHS. This resulted in an adequate amount of clamping force once all 4 clips were attached. Several test mounts showed that nearly all AS-5 was being squeezed out.

Keep in mind that with the IHS on, the force is distributed evenly around the outer edges of the chip. But without the IHS, the force is directed entirely onto the core itself.

ola I decided to remove ihs of mine sd4000+, with ihs again back as bigger temperatures, I think that if it must to the fact of ihs not be glue in the base,tomorow I go to take off board it are to study as I go for xp120(se to give without ihs).

now let see the results:

with ihs max prime95 stable is 2700mhz 1.475vcore temp 46ºc
with ihs removed max prime95 stable is 2750mhz 1.475vcore temp 41ºc

I did the same to mine yesterday (3000+ Venice and XP-90).

With IHS:
1.6volts to be Prime stable at 2.6ghz, load temp 54-55 (24 ambient)

IHS removed:
1.552 volts for the same speed, 45-46 load temp (same ambient). :)

I dont have a xp cooler but i think i have squished the core wiht my zalman 7700cu, but i cant see any damage.......

I took of the ihs on my 3000+ winchester and at the same time i did the 1.7vcore mod on my asrock 939dual sata2.
The cooler i used was a Zalman 7700cu... I noticed that it could move around on the naked core so i took the zalman apart and lifted up the (mounting clip) to the second level and it never danced around on the core... I booted up got into bios and saw that the temp was 48C so i thought that i had to screw it down a bit to get a better connection between cpun and the cooler... It worked, the temp got down to 44c. The vcore was 1.4+0.25=1.65 at 44c..Then i thought that maybe one turn would decrease the temp more and when i did it, the pc instantly freezed in bios... I hit the off button and tried to restart the pc but nothing happened..not even the fans showed any sign of life..

Took out the naked 3000+ cpu to inspect it but didn't see any damage at all. Maybe the mobo died on me cus of the Vmod? I sanpped of one leg of the resistor but still no life....What to do now?....hehe

Thanks for the welcome.

I did test at 1.6volts (before I tried to lower it). I had 48-50 at full load.

I'm now at 2610mhz 1.552. Seems stable for now. I'm an happy camper :cool:

For those concerned with damaging the core with the clip-in mechanism of the xp-90, someone at DFI-street (forgot who - sorry can't give proper credit!) had the brilliant suggestion of clipping the heat sink to the mounting bracket while the bracket was removed from the motherboard. Then the xp-90 can be attached as a whole to the motherboard by screwing it directly in. Going back and forth between the screws should ensure even pressure and therefore provide some measure of safety.

Removing the IHS is really not that big of a deal. I searched the web for an image of a naked chip. I then took a sharpie and marked where all the delicate bits were on top of my IHS, erring on the side of caution. This gave me a visual cue when using the razor blade. Be firm, and be patient and you'll be fine.

Did this a few months ago myself. Didnt have to grind down anything here....

Been running 2800mhz @1.65v now since then with no problems.

I think i am going to do this this weekend on my 4400, i have been running at stock lately.

Are you guys not using a shim or anything to keep the copper base from hitting some of the chips around the core?

With an XP90? How easy is it to mount it, do you hold the hs really hard and use a screwdriver or something to get the clips on.

Yup. Honestly it was cake. Removed my ram for more clearance, hooked one side of the clips, and once hooked, I just pulled up real hard using the hooks as the pivot point. The base of the xp-90 did not touch the core of the processor until AFTER I had the other side hooked as well. The key here is to really have a GOOD grip on the heatsink without bending up the fins.

Also, I do not have my fan mounted directly to my heatsink. I use this instead:

Just use some regular thin transparent tape to cover up those resistors/chips around your core, that way you're 100% sure nothing makes unwanted contact :)

Assuming you install the heatsink flat (and it isnt warped) then you really shouldnt have an issue hitting anything but the core, since it is the highest point on the chip.

Thing is the shim also ensured even contact to the core - without putting any extra pressure onto it. I wouldn't mind doing it on either of my cores (1 Watercooled, one XP120) but getting the right pressure has never been a great skill of mine.

It'd be nice if someone did come out with a shim for A64s. Despite the small market i'm sure they'd sell quite well.

I guess any tape will do as long as it's not too thick, so the core will be the highest 'component' on the cpu pcb, which is of course the only thing that should be touching the heatsink ;)
