The main issue with the XP coolers is the clamping force and the possibility cracking the core due to uneven/excessive force. You have to be carefull to hold the HS level while clamping all 4 clips so you put even pressure all around.
To limit the clamping force, I took only 2mm off the legs of the bracket instead of the 3mm or so that is lost by removing the IHS. This resulted in an adequate amount of clamping force once all 4 clips were attached. Several test mounts showed that nearly all AS-5 was being squeezed out.
Keep in mind that with the IHS on, the force is distributed evenly around the outer edges of the chip. But without the IHS, the force is directed entirely onto the core itself.
