I dont know why they dont use some decent cooling on a $599 video card. If sticking a $10 fan drops temps 15 deg you'd think Nvidia would rethink their great single slot solution. Drop the cheap plastic pimpage panel and stick a nice quick, low profile on the heatsink - hell it looks better anyways.
Besides I'd rather have the card running cool than their stupid logo on it.
Tried this today with one of my 6800GT's, Strapped a delta fan to the front and went from 64 Degrees idle to 48 Degrees Idle, Load 87 Degrees to 69 Degrees! I can now bench the core at 468:slapass: where as before it was maxxed out at 424 :stick:

Well, dnottis and I have both decided to try out this mod, my idle temp dropped to 39C from 47C and my Load temp dropped to 59-60C from 78C. And I'm actually just using a 80x80x15 fan that I scavenged from one of my Evercool WC-20x watercooling kits.
I used an 80mm 27CFM (21DBA) Vantec Stealth 80mm, screwed in 3 of the 4 corners. Temps are about 39 - 41 idle, load 58-63 down from 47 and 72.

Nice how much improvement if any on GPU and mem ocs ?
What i did was leave stock BFG 7800GTX heatsinks as is and just tied 4x 80mm ADDA case fans together and sat them over the cards so that air flow cools both front and back of both cards
before stock heatsink
GPU idle: 49-53C
GPU load: 74-83C
after stock heatsink + 4x ADDA case fans
GPU idle: 41-43C
GPU load: 66-69C

I had to remove my 92mm fan.
Apparently, 35c was "to cold" for the card, and I was recieving the cold bug.
Performance was dropped into the single digits for everything, thought it was drivers at first, but it was the card being to cold, second I turned the fan off, performance returned.
:nono: Nvidia you really need to fix this problem, you lied about the new drivers fixing it!

Been doing some more testing with my 6800GT & one of the card's is bench stable 508 / 1240 with 1.4V bios mod..... Which is better than some cards on water :p:
I have noticed one thing, the higher the core the lower I have to go with the memory???? :stick:

Ive got a stock AMD 64 sink lying around, wonder if that would be any good, the fan that is. :)
did this with a low cfm 80mm fan at first (24.4dba/28.8cfm) and then a higher (not by much) 80mm fan (30dba/34cfm)
here are the results:
stock - 51-53/82-83 idle/load
low cfm - same/75-76 idle/load
higher cfm - same/68-69 idle/load
im using a ghetto rigged "shroud" that lifts it about 1/2-3/4 inch away from the hs...didnt bother trying without the "shroud" since my damn pump is in the way and the 7800 is looong and a b!tch to get in and out
auto detects slightly higher than before =(

just zip tie, so you dont have any damage to the heatsink just in case you need to rma
I screwed it right into the stock heatsink.

Using a stock A64 AMD fan. Screwed it in using the screws from it.
Allowed me to run 05 and 03 at 515/1400!!!!!
Temps before mod: 45/78
Temps After Mod : 43/60
And the load 60C is at 515 Core speed. Gaming at stock the temp is closer to 55C. Awesome temps, and such an easy mod!!!!!!!!
