New Asus P5WD2 BIOS: 0509

Sometimes if you dig around the Asus FTPs, you'll come across a beta before it's available through the sites. I am not sure if that's where the 509 came from or not, but I wanted to jump in to say that I have a 550 that's been >300FSB on WC with revision 304 (OEM on the mobo). I haven't had any issues with it...the LockFree was even working for me no problem from the get-go.

What FSB are you having a problem with? What are you temps? Voltages? Are you sure it's just not something hardware limiting the OC?

The specs I'm on are in my signature, I've got the vcore on 1.53v but AI-booster window shows flunctuations under load - down 0.6 to 0.7 v.

That's some decent (ie. maybe a little much) Vc for WC. So I am guessing that you are seeing something close to 1.60V at idle then? That would definitely be a lot and is probably driving up temps. I saw the system specs, but temps (which I didn't see) may be the issue with further OCing.

I really don't know how good that TT Big Water is, but I wouldn't attempt Vc that high on a 775 except with really good WCing and cool ambients...or on vapo. I keep mine at 1.45Vc max (on water) for the daily grind and never over 1.4875 when trying to push it.

What are your temps? Do you have ThrottleWatch and is it ever throttling back? If so, it's just too hot already and more FSB is just going to make it worse....and I definitely wouldn't add more Vc ;)

It's not the TT bigwater cooler, its the Aquarius III external system - an expensive piece of low performance compared to others. I do have TM and C1E disabled in bios. Its on 1.53 Vcore in BIOS, not 1.6 like you said.

Another strange thing I've found is that the controls for
-CPU clock spread spectrum
-PCIe " " " "
are missing from my 0422 bios... :confused:

I've looked all over the bios and can't see them anywhere but are listed in the MoBo book.

is 120mhz stock freq. for PCI-E...this is my first PCI-E board and I can't say i've been able to successfully google it....:)

you might be better off with an xp-120 if they nount to 775 then a aqaurius...many a time i've ssen the aquaious provide higher than high end air temps.

Well for now I'm sticking to the 422 bios, other than the reboot issue it's performing great for me. I'm running a 660 3.6es at 330fsbX14 and it boots fine. I just set my PCIe to 101 and leave it there. :D

This is on some really crappy ambient water cooling.

To clarify this: I got the BIOS from the German Asus support by mail and have not downloaded this from their websites...

I run PCIe @ 120 because its the only value that will boot with my WD Sata II HD, I could use 119 and it will still boot. If I leave it on auto setting I get window errors with I.E. etc.
I agree with you about the Thermaltake aquarius III WC, an expensive piece of junk - however I did get it when I was not seriously into O/C like I tend to be now... :p:

I really think the inability to get good FSB overclock is because of bad luck with D0 stepping 560 cpu. :( Its a question of luck with the D0 steppings. Better chance of good O/C with E0's

Can anyone give me a little help, I am unable to get my FSB past 960,
currently what I'm running at

If I try and change any settings in the bios after the reboot I just get a black screen and then with a restart it gives me an error saying that the Overclocking failed.

hey jsut curious why you went with 512MB...is this computer jsut for OCing/benching?

Is there any problems with memtester 1.55+ and the Asus P5WD2?

Running 240x19 = 4560 Mhz. All voltages are default exept Vmem wich Im running at 2.1 Volt.

Maybe We can have some advise regarding settings just to save some time :D ???

you want some advice for settings are yours?
i'd bump to 1.50 or 1.52 and then see where you get mhz wise and once you find a highest setting (i would try up to 1.6V before you give up) then once you've found your highest stable try to back down the vcore and check for stab. that way yoru temps are colder....i'd start with leaving the DDR multi. at 400 until yoru done OCing, bump up all board voltages by 1 notch, make sure C1E, Thermal monitor are off, all spread spectrums are off....you should be able to get 5ghz stable no problem hell i was stable at 4.503 on water and could bench at 4.6 just not play games....what are your temps like?

For what it's worth it seems the cold boot bug is gone now. I only had trouble booting the first time after I installed the 0509 bios, since then it has booted right up every time I started up the system. This time it has been shut down for about 22 hours and still booted right up. So that's nice.

However I'm now having trouble running at much more than 325 MHz fsb with 4x DIMMs, so I'm probably going to stay with the 18x multiplier for now. I really like having 2 GB memory in there.

thats good news....my board will be back up and installed in 3 hours i think i'll flash 0509 after first boot....what kind of cooling do you have on your 7800?...your bench scores are very impressive btw.

Im a standard Vcore memtesting at 250 x19 = 4750 Mhz.

Ill just keep Vcore low rigth now. Have way to much respect for my cpu :)

Ill turn off spread spectrum, C1E,and the thermal :banana::banana::banana::banana: :) And then just bump all the other voltages a noch up :)

Currently wall time is 30 min.

BTW I hope its okay to use this thread??? Or should I start my own ??? :)

Thanks! The Gainward 7800GTX is actually only cooled with the retail cooler, and then 2x 80mm low noise fans blowing over it. But ambient temps have been around 27°C/80°F for the past few weeks, so the fans are more an extra precaution. But the card is really fast. For a single card, single slot cooling design I'm pretty impressed with the speed of the card. I only wish I could get some SLI up and running as well, then it would be totally kick a** :D

Yeah the 0509 bios actually seems to be pretty good. Overall a small performance improvement (on the memory side particularly) over the 0422 as well. However both the 0422 and the 0509 gave me a checksum error upon install.... They both work fine though. Anybody else experienced that?

LarsK: did you just have to clear CMOS to fix it?? i don't wanna get stuck again when i get home.....

Nosfer@tu: increasing the voltage will in no way "disrespect" your CPU or put it on ANY danger as long as you stay under 1.6V I gurantee you....

Nope, I just hit the reset button and I was up and running again. Clearing the CMOS is probably a good idea regardless though.

Just tried for a 3dmark03 but it simply shut down. I to experianse the boot problem. Very frustrating.

Im at 1.425 Vcore now. and reset all the voltages to auto.

But you dont geet any info on voltages in bios. its really a shame. just wanted to se what auto was at. So i Know how much to increase :)

Well I get the spontaneous reboot problem with the O422 bios - that is under full 100% cpu load for anything from 10mins upto 2 hours or so. I really don't know... here....the system could be shutting down due to overheat. Crappy aquarius III WC. :( If you turn up the speed of the radiator fan - it just makes too much noise !
Sold my 560 cpu and now going with 630 - finally in the land of 64bit crunchers..lol! :p:
I hear this 630 is a great O/Cer, changing cooling system too... going to try TT Big Typhoon air cooler.
Will install newer bios when up and running soon. :clap:

Are youy guys using any program to change the fsb in windows? I've tried clockgen and setfsb but none of these work. Setfsb gives me a smbus error.
